The Modular Switchgear Monitoring (MSM) is an add-on system to superviseSF6-gas density. The system is suitable for all kinds of switchgear layouts and operates independently of existing control and protection devices. MSM is applicable for new substations and for retrofit of existing installations.

The importance of reliable data in real time is one of the most decisive factors when it comes to safe operation of power substations; it can make the difference between a stable and an unstable system.

The MSM offers a superior supervision support based on accurate data, collected and displayed in a well-designed way. Functional redundancy provides system reliability and assures the highest substa- tion availability.

Efficient control systems are to a large extent defined by the level of data acces-sibility and the resulting time to reaction.

Through the centralized visualization mode and the instant system overview, the MSM increases the overall system efficiency by reducing the SF6-gas inspection time. In addition, the historical trend function in combination with the leakage rate algorithm enables prediction of time to next alarm, facilitating maintenance plan-ning. Consequently, station availability is kept at a high level and maintenance cost can be reduced. MSM is the door-opener for every user wanting to change service philosophy from time-based to condition based maintenance.

Advanced functions are typically based upon complex systems interacting with each other to create output. Simplifying the user interface of such systems can sometimes be a challenge but is crucial for the perceived product benefit.

The installation and configuration efforts of MSM have been reduced to a minimum to allow immediate system integration and instant profit of product benefits. The MSM is a “plug and play” product ready to be taken into service after system test. The centralized data display function simplifies the supervision work by reducing the need for carrying out inspections on difficult locations.

ApplicationThe MSM system improves the reliability of the complete switchgear by offering a redundancy in SF6-gas density supervision. The hybrid gas density monitor enables measu- rements through conventional switch signals and via sensor signals. The status in each gas compartment is continuously measured and displayed in a consolidated view, facilitating instant detection of any critical situations and improving the station condition awareness. Through the history track record, the MSM calculates a leakage trend, thus supporting mainte-nance planning by e.g. scheduling of countermeasures into non-critical times.

VisualizationThe system status can be conveniently accessed and displayed from any location at any time through a broad option of display modes, both stationary and remote:

− Conventional mechanical device − Display (HMI = Human Machine Interface)

in the local control cubicle − SCADA or Web interface

Data displayed: − Actual SF6-gas density and leakage rate − SF6-gas alarm status (low and too low) − Gas pressure trend (day, month, year) − Predicted time to next alarm − Device and sensor status (self supervision)

ModulesThe MSM system consists of one Control and CommunicationModule (CCM) and at least one Analog Input Module (AIM), which are arranged in an MSM Stack (see figure 2). The AIM modules communicate via an internal bus system with the CCM, which provides interfaces via Ethernet and display port for visualization of gathered data.

The MSM modules are DIN rail mountable, and since they utilize integrated bus pins, they can be very easily installed (see figure 2). One MSM Stack can be extended with up to ten AIMs, each able to handle eight input signals (data from eight gas compartments). Several MSM Stacks can operate in parallel, providing no limit for the number ofsensors that can be connected.

SensorsThe MSM integrates temperature- and pressure compensated sensors designed especially for the use in high voltage substations. All sensors are tested according to IEC 62271 and provide interfaces to industrial standards. The SF6-gasdensity sensor is based on the pressure compensated principle and provides a 6.5…20 mA output signal.
