SAFETY SUMMARY

1. GENERAL SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS. This manual describes physical and chemical processes which may cause injury or death to personnel, or damage to equipment if not properly followed. This warning summary contains general safety and hazardous materials warnings that must be understood and applied during operation and maintenance of this equipment. Failure to observe these precautions could result in serious injury or death to personnel. Also included are explanations of safety and hazardous materials used within the technical bulletin.

2. WARNINGS, CAUTIONS AND NOTES. WARNINGs and CAUTIONs are used in this bulletin to highlight

operating or maintenance procedures, practices, conditions or statements which are considered essential to protection of personnel (WARNING) or equipment (CAUTION). WARNINGs and CAUTIONs immediately precede the step or procedure to which they apply.

WARNINGs and CAUTIONs consist of four parts: heading (WARNING, CAUTION or Icon [see HAZARDOUS MATERIALS WARNINGS]), a statement of the hazard, minimum precautions, and possible result if disregarded. NOTEs are used to highlight operating or maintenance procedures, practices, conditions or statements which are not essential to protection of personnel or equipment. NOTEs may precede or follow the step or procedure, depending upon the information to be highlighted. The headings used and their definitions are as follows.

Highlights an essential operating or maintenance procedure, practice, condition, statement, etc. which if not strictly observed, could result in injury to or death of personnel or long term health hazards.

Highlights an essential operating or maintenance procedure, practice, condition, statement, etc. which, if not strictly observed, could result in damage to or destruction of equipment or loss of mission effectiveness.

3. HAZARDOUS MATERIALS WARNINGS. Hazardous Materials Warnings in this bulletin are provided

through use of the Hazard Symbols listed below. Consult the HAZARDOUS MATERIALS DESCRIPTION below or Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) (Occupational Safety and Health Administration [OSHA] Form 20 or equivalent) for specific information on hazards, effects, and protective equipment requirements. If you do not have an MSDS for the material involved, contact your supervisor, or the base Safety or Bioenvironmental Engineering Offices.

3.1. Hazardous Materials Icons. Icons are used in this bulletin to identify dangers associated with hazardous materials. The icons used and their definitions are as follows.

The symbol of a person wearing goggles shows that the material will injure the eyes.

The symbol of a person sticking their arm into gears indicates placing arms, hands, etc. near or into moving parts may injure the user.

The symbol of a person with an electric bolt through their body indicates power is used and may electrocute the user if caution is not taken.

The symbol of liquid pouring on the hand shows that liquids may be used which should be kept off the skin as they may injure or irritate the user if contact is made.

3.2. Hazardous Materials Description. The following hazardous materials are used in this manual. Each icon

represents certain hazards as described above. Beneath the icons is the hazardous material name and reference number. Below the icons, material name and reference number is a description of the hazardous material. Only the icons, material name, and reference number are used in the text of the manual. If a full description of the hazardous material is required while performing procedures in this manual, use the reference number to locate the appropriate description below.

OIL, PENETRATING, A-A-50493 Penetrating Oil, A-A-50493, is mildly irritating to skin or eyes. Wear eye protection and rubber gloves when using penetrating oil. Keep off of eyes, skin and clothing. Do not ingest. For first aid, flush eyes for 15 minutes with water. Wash skin with soap and water. Consult with local bioenvironmental engineer for disposal of materials and empty containers.

4. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS.

The following safety precautions shall be observed while performing procedures in this manual:

• Prior to performing maintenance on any Assault Kitchen components, remove all watches, rings, and jewelry. Failure to do so could result in serious personal injury or death.

• Do not stand in water while handling live power cords or electrical shock may result. Position all power cables so that they are out of the way during operation and are not in water.

• Wear eye protection and rubber gloves when using penetrating oil.

• Wear eye protection during drilling operations.

CHAPTER 1 GENERAL INFORMATION

1. SCOPE. This TB affects all M1101 or M1102 trailers that will be used with the Army Assault Kitchen (AK). 2. PURPOSE. The purpose of this Technical Bulletin (TB) is to modify an M1101 or M1102 Light Tactical

Trailer (LTT) for use with the Army Assault Kitchen (AK). The modification to the trailer consists of adding 17 D-rings, two storage racks, and a fire extinguisher and fire extinguisher bracket.

3. PRIORITY CLASSIFICATION. This modification has been classified as ROUTINE.

a. Equipment in Use. All equipment in use must be modified prior to attempting to install or use the AK.

b. Equipment in Wholesale Depot Supply or Maintenance Activities. This TB will be accomplished on

serviceable material prior to issuance of the AK and/or subsequent to the scheduled completion date. The TB will be applied to unserviceable material during scheduled Depot Maintenance (DM).

4. END ITEMS OR SYSTEMS TO BE MODIFIED. Modification will apply to all M1101 or M1102 LTTs to

be used with the AK, prior to or concurrent with fielding of the AK.

significantly affected by this Technical Bulletin. 8. QUALITY ASSURANCE REQUIREMENTS. Inspection of completed technical bulletin application for

full compliance with the technical requirements of the instructions will be accomplished by qualified personnel.

9. RECORDING AND REPORTING OF THE MODIFICATION. Records, reports and modification

accomplishment shall be in accordance with DA Pam 750-8, The Army Maintenance Management System (TAMMS) Users Manual.

Army Maintenance Systems (SAMS). Application information shall be reported on DA Form 2407 and submitted within three (3) days of accomplishment of modification as follows:

• One (1) copy retain using unit • Two (2) copies to: PM FORCE SUSTAINMENT SYSTEMS, SFAE-CSS-FP-F, US Army Soldier

Systems Center, Natick, MA 01760 10. MODIFICATION IDENTIFICATION. Seventeen additional D-rings will be located in the cargo area of

the Light Tactical Trailer. Five holes will be located in the curbside wheel well to allow the mounting of a storage rack. Storage racks will be installed on the roadside and curbside of the LTT.

2. INSTALLATION OF SMALL D-RINGS. Installation of the 14 small D-rings will be as follows:

a. Using criteria contained in Figure 2-1, identify the location and orientation of the 14 D-rings (labeled D-Ring 1 through D-Ring 14 in Figure 2-1) in the LTT cargo bed.

b. Mark two rivet locations per each D-ring using D-ring as template.

Wear eye protection during drilling operations.

c. Center punch hole location and drill hole size 0.257-0.261 inch as shown in Figure 2-2.

Use Item 8 from Table 2-1 (dome head rivet, grip range 0.251-0.375 inch) to secure D-Ring 1 to LTT cargo bed. Use Item 7 from Table 2-1 (dome head rivet, grip range 0.126-0.250 inch) to secure D-Rings 2 through 14 to LTT cargo bed.

3. INSTALLATION OF ELASTIC CORDS. Install elastic cords (Table 2-1, Item 13) as follows:

a. Crimp one end of elastic cord to D-rings 2 and 12 as shown in Figure 2-4.

4. INSTALLATION OF LARGE D-RINGS. Install three large D-rings (Table 2-1, Item 1) as follows:

a. Using D-Rings as template, mark holes for three larger D-rings as shown in Figure 2-1.

Wear eye protection during drilling operations.

b. Center punch three hole locations and drill pilot holes. Drill holes to 17/32 inch to fit bolt (Figure 2-6).

c. Position D-ring in proper orientation (see Figure 2-1).

d. Position 2-inch x 2-inch x 1/4-inch plate (Table 2-1, Item 3) on underside of LTT cargo bed and attach D-ring to cargo bed using screw, washer, and locknut (Table 2-1, Items 2, 4, and 5) as shown in Figure 2-7 and Figure 2-8. Tighten screw to 65 foot-pounds using torque wrench.

5. INSTALLATION OF LTT PASSENGER SIDE BRACKET. Install the aluminum LTT passenger side mounting bracket (Table 2-1, Item 11) as follows:

a. Remove screws, flat washers, and lock washers from the Canopy Bracket, Double Angle Center,

in the three locations indicated in Figure 2-9, Item 1. Retain flat washers for reuse. b. Locate hardware provided with Bracket, LTT, Passenger Side (Table 2-1, Item 11, A through D).

c. Position bracket in place inside LTT, resting on the wheel well (Figure 2-10).

d. Insert and hand tighten three screws (1-1/8 inch long, Table 2-1, Item 12), washers, and lock washers into LTT threaded inserts (Figure 2-10, Item 1).

e. Using Bracket, LTT, Passenger Side as a template, mark the location of existing hole pattern in

bracket on wheel well.

Wear eye protection during drilling operations.

f. Using electric drill, drill 13/32-inch holes into wheel well in marked locations.

g. Using hardware provided with bracket (Table 2-1, Item 11, A through D), secure bracket to wheel well (Figure 2-11).

h. Tighten all hardware to secure bracket to LTT. 6. INSTALLATION OF LTT DRIVER SIDE BRACKET. Install aluminum LTT driver side mounting

bracket (Item 10, Table 2-1) as follows:

a. Remove 12 screws, washers, and lock washers from top edge of LTT as indicated in Figure 2-12. Retain washers.

b. Align bracket with holes in trailer. Using 1-1/8-inch screws provided (Table 2-1, Item 12), install

and hand tighten screws, washers, and lock washers.

c. Align bracket leg with existing hole in wheel well. Shift bracket as required to align hole in leg

with hole in wheel well as shown in Figure 2-13. d. Tighten 12 screws located on top edge of LTT.

e. Using 13/32-inch drill bit, expand existing hole in wheel well.

7. INSTALLATION OF FIRE EXTINGUISHER BRACKET. Install the fire extinguisher bracket as follows:

a. Locate hardware (bolts, washers, locknuts) provided with fire extinguisher bracket.

CHAPTER 3 REMOVAL - ASSAULT KITCHEN D-RINGS

AND MOUNTING BRACKETS

1. PURPOSE. This chapter details procedures for removal of the Assault Kitchen (AK) module from the M1101 or M1102 trailer and restoring the trailer to its original configuration. 2. REMOVAL OF ANCILLARY EQUIPMENT. Prior to removing the AK brackets and D-rings, remove all ancillary equipment from the bed of the trailer. Ancillary equipment includes but is not limited to: Insulated Food Containers, Side Loading Pan Carriers, Ice Chests, Tray Ration Heating System, Insulated Beverage Containers, Electrical System and any other AK components that can be removed at this time. 3. REMOVAL OF LTT PASSENGER SIDE BRACKET. To remove the LTT passenger side bracket perform the following steps:

a. Remove three bolts and flat washers from the Canopy Bracket, Double Angle Center, in the three locations indicated in Figure 3-1. Retain bolts and washers for reuse.

b. Loosen and remove the attaching hardware that secures the lower portion of the bracket to the

trailer wheel well.

c. Remove bracket assembly from the trailer and set aside.

d. Install and hand tighten the canopy bracket support hardware into the threaded inserts.

Do not over torque the canopy support attachment bolts. Over torquing the bolts could strip and loosen the threaded inserts mounted in the trailer sidewall.

e. Using a wrench or socket, tighten the bolts.

f. Inspect wheel well area previously covered by bracket for corrosion or missing paint.

g. Remove any corrosion in accordance with TM 43-0139.

h. Spot prime and paint any bare metal in accordance with TM 43-0139.

i. Wheel well holes may be patched using welding guidance and procedures in TC 9-237.

4. REMOVAL OF LTT DRIVER SIDE BRACKET. Removing the LTT driver side bracket requires two personnel. Perform the following steps:

a. Remove 12 bolts, washers, and lock washers from top edge of LTT. Retain washers.

b. Loosen and remove the attaching hardware securing the lower portion of the bracket to the trailer wheel well.

(1) One person inside the trailer to turn the bolt with a wrench. (2) One person outside the trailer using a wrench to keep the nut from spinning with the bolt until

loose. (3) Once nut is removed, remove bolt and washers and retain for future use.

c. Remove bracket assembly from the trailer and set aside.

d. Install and hand tighten the 12 canopy bracket support bolts, washers, and lock washers into the

threaded inserts.

Do not over torque the canopy support attachment bolts. Over torquing the bolts could strip and loosen the threaded inserts mounted in the trailer sidewall.

e. Using a wrench or socket, tighten the bolts. f. Inspect wheel well area, previously covered by bracket, for corrosion or missing paint. g. Remove any corrosion in accordance with TM 43-0139.

5. REMOVAL OF ELASTIC CORDS.

a. Using vice grips or pliers, pry open the hook of the elastic cord enough to remove the hook from the D-ring.

b. Set elastic cords aside for possible reuse.

6. REMOVAL OF SMALL D-RINGS.

Wear eye protection during drilling operations.

To remove the small D-rings, perform the following steps:

a. Mount a 1/4-inch drill bit in a 3/8 to 1/2-inch electric drill.

b. Locate the two rivet heads securing each small D-ring to the trailer bed.

c. Use the drill and drill bit to drill out the two rivets on each small D-ring.

d. If required, use a hammer and appropriate sized pin punch to remove any remaining rivet body.

e. Remove D-ring.

f. Repeat steps a. through e. for remaining small D-rings.

g. Bed holes may be patched using welding guidance and procedures in TC 9-237.

h. Spot prime and paint any bare metal in accordance with TM 43-0139. 7. REMOVAL OF LARGE D-RINGS. To remove the three large D-rings requires two personnel. Perform

the following steps:

a. One person located in the bed of the trailer will insert an appropriate size hex key into cap screw of large D-ring (Figure 3-2).

b. The other person will place themselves under the trailer and, using a socket wrench, extension, and appropriate sized deep well socket, will unscrew the nut from the mounting plate underneath the trailer while the person in the bed keeps the cap screw from turning by holding the hex key (Figure 3-3).

c. Remove nut, washers, screw, backing plate, and D-ring.

d. Repeat steps a. through c. for remaining large D-rings.

e. Bed holes may be patched using welding guidance and procedures in TC 9-237.

f. Spot prime and paint any bare metal in accordance with TM 43-0139.

components in accordance with TM 10-7360-230-13&P and Army regulations.
