Staffers at the new Andaz hotel on the Sunset Strip—yes, formerly the infamous “Riot Hyatt”—are being required, as part of their training program, to enroll in a two-day improv program at the iO West theater in Hollywood. “We want the personalities of our employees to shine through without seeming too robotic,” says director of operations Jonathan Frolich. Adds the company’s head of training, Bianca Herrera: “It’s about learning to read people’s needs through their body language.” Of course, this being L.A., where the hospitality industry so often overlaps with the aspiring actor community, it’s often merely remedial instruction. “Many among our staff,” admits Frolich, “already have this kind of background as part of their tool set.” > > > Lindsay Lohan’s leggings line 6126, (named after Marilyn Monroe’s birthday), is stretching out for its second season with spring’s Conover design, which features a faux denim wash in either indigo or black. “Leggings are the new premium denim,” says Lohan. Adds brand prez Kristi Kaylor of the $85 look (now available at Free People): “This [design] came out of that idea.” > > > Yes, a vending machine’s been installed at Studio at Fred Segal in SaMo. But don’t expect to pick up any Doritos. The sleek, first-of-its-kind U*tique carries only top-o’-the-market must-salves like Assouline books, Vosges chocolates, Lancôme mascara and C.O. Bigelow shaving sets. “It’s curated,” says creator Mara Segal (“No relation to Fred—I get asked that all the time”). “Don’t think of it as though we’ve upped the vending machine. sHannyn’s HaReM Listen up: The homegrown, semi-incestuous sonic scene that surrounds actress Shannyn Sossamon (40 Days and 40 Nights) is about to begin making some serious noise. Warpaint, the up-and-strumming psych-folk outfit for which she played drums until film work forced her to bow out in late ’08, has released its ethereal full-length, Exquisite Corpse, and will soon take off to Austin for a SXSW stint in March with BFF band Weave!, whose own EP, the neo-Bow Wow Wow Rastatution, drops in a few months. (The latter’s drummer is Nicole Turley—currently the sweetie of John Frusciante from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who used to date Warpaint guitarist Emily Kokal.) Both acts, who have drawn fans like Heath Ledger and Kirsten Dunst to gigs, get booked at Eastside venues like Bordello and Spaceland, often on the same bill with their buds in Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros before grabbing an après-set round at Little Joy with the dudes from Rriiccee, the über-experimental collab between Vincent Gallo and Simon and Nikolas Haas, brothers of actor Lukas. “We’re all just a bunch of kids doing totally different things [musically],” says Warpaint bassist—and Shannyn sis—Jennifer Lindberg of the scene’s disparate sounds, “but we’re all playing on the same playground.” –A.J.
