Modern Jacobiterepresents a $irst $oray into symphonic music $or %a&& saxophonist Tommy Smith' who has

The centrepiece o$ this striin! album is an eocatie paintin! in music' *+acobite,. Tommy Smith composed

this ambitious symphonic piece $or saxophone and orchestra' and it is deeply imbued with dramatic tension'extraordinary beauty and in$lamed passion. *+acobite, is also musically inentie and $inely balanced as an

intricate structure' an articulate narratie and an exceptionally isceral piece o$ ori!inal music.

The -D opens with a shimmerin! interpretation o$ Rachmanino$$,s *ocalise,' in which Smith,s saxophone

emotes a ran!e o$ complex $eelin!s in a deastatin!ly romantic orchestration. ocalise, is amon! the best

loed o$ the composer,s $amous *0ourteen Son!s,' and Smith brin!s the subtlest nuances o$ improisation to

bear upon its melodic richness.

The third element is a portmanteau o$ compositions ostensibly by -hic -orea' entitled simply' *-hildren,s

Son!s,. 1t consists o$ -orea,s ori!inal tunes alternatin! with Smith,s reima!inin!s o$ -orea,s childhood

memoirs. These ariations are deliered with improisational ere' and lined by the connectie tissue o$

new music composed by Tommy Smith.

Smith was immediately prompted by Ro!er 8ollen o$ the Scottish 9nsemble (S9) to spend six months

studyin! orchestration' with a new commission $or saxophone and strin!s ery much in mind. s a'lue

The next seen years were spent buildin! the $orces necessary $or a much bi!!er orchestral wor' which

came in the $orm o$ the saxophone concerto8iroshima (#334). This was premiered with the 7rchestra o$ St.

+ohn Smith@s S?uare at -helms$ord -athedral' and included strin!s' brass' woodwinds' percussion' piano and

saxophone.

Tommy Smith also appeared as solo saxophonist $or Sally eamish@s The Knotrass Eley' commissioned
