By the late 18th Centur y, Wapping made London one of the busiest por ts in the world. The building of The London Docks transformed a small r iverside v il lage into one of the l iveliest distr icts in the Capital.

Wapping was a gateway to the Br i t ish Empire, a commercial centre and a mix of cultural inf luences. Celebrated f igures made their home here, l ike explorer and captain of the Endeavour, James Cook. A resident of Wapping in the 1750s, he later became the f irst European to master the east coast of Australia.

Wapping was also home to ar t is ts and writers. Char les Dickens drew inspirat ion from the area dur ing v isi ts to his godfather in nearby L imehouse. Much of what he saw of l i fe in the docks and at the r iverside became famous scenes in his books l ike Oliver Twist and Great E xpectat ions.

The London Docks of f icially opened on 30 Januar y 1805. When completed, the ent ire si te encompassed 90 acres, including 35 acres of water, 50 acres of warehouse space, 2.5 miles of quays and jet t ies and 7 acres of wine vaults. I t has been est imated that The London Docks were able to accommodate up to as many as 500 ships and store over 200,000 tons of goods.

The London Docks dealt with a vast array of goods, f rom brandy, wine and r ice to f ruit, spices, cof fee and cocoa.

This t ypographical homage takes inspirat ion from the rates and tar i f f books used by The London Dock Company to record all the goods expor ted and impor ted v ia London. Diamonds. Giraf fes. Elephants Teeth. And Bears Grease, an apparent popular remedy for hair loss. The classic block st y le was inspired by the ar t is t Mondrian and the surrounding landscapes.
