TheMurskarollermillequippedwithabaggercrimps,addspreservativeandpackstheharvest-moistgrainintoanairtightplastictube-allinasingleoperation.Thecrimpedgrainisready-to-feedfodder,suitableforalllivestock.Thetubecanbefilledtoalengthof60m,meaningthatasackmeasuringø2.0mwillaccommodatearound180m³ofhigh-qualitycompactedgrain.Theopeninginthesackiseasytomana-ge,andsuitablealsoforminorconsumption.

Therollersareattheheartofthemill,andconsequentlytheyhavebeenthefocusofspecialattention.Theyarespring-loaded, gear-driven (with both rollers driving)andhardened.Shieldmagnetsprotecttherollersfromthemetal.
Therollersurfaceisoptionallyeitherspotflutedor2mmgrooved. Spot fluted rollers are suitable for use with dryandacidgrain.The2mmgroovedrollerswillalsocrimppeamixes.

High quality cost-effective feedCrimpingisacost-effectivewaytoproducehigh-qualityfeedforalllivestock.Itimprovesprofitabilityofthefarmbyreducingcostsofinvestments(dryer,storage)andenergy(oil,electricity).Productioncostsofcrimpedgrainaremuchlowerthanthoseofdriedgrain.
Crimpedgrainisreadytofeedwithoutanyfurtherprocessing.ItcanbeuseddirectlyfromthestorageforfeedingassuchorasacomponentofTotalMixedRations(TMR)forcattleorinliquidfeedforpigs.
Ensilingofcrimpedgrainisbasedonlacticacidfermentationbylacticacidbacteria.FavourableenvironmentforlacticacidfermentationiscreatedbyloweringthepHofcrimpedgraintothelevelof4andbyanaerobicconditions.
Cultivation technique and harvestingGrainforcrimpingcanbecultivatedsimilarlytograinfordrying,butitisharvested2–3weeksearlierattheyellowishstagewhenthegrain’senergycontentandproteincontentareattheirhighest.Earlyharvestingallowscultivationoflatevarietieswithhigheryieldpotential.Fertilizationisalsomoreflexibleandmanurecanbeusedmorefreely.
Grainattheyellowishstageissofterandbiggerthanatthematurestage.Themoisturecontentofthegrainistypically30–40%.Thuscombineharvestershouldbesetcorrectlytoharvestthehighmoisturecrop.Concaveshouldbeadjustedtotightestpossiblesettinganddrumspeedshouldbesettomaximumrevolutions.Sievesshouldbefullyopenandfanshouldbehalfopen.Reducingspeedatharvestingandincreasingcuttingheightreducesriskforblockages.
Crimping and ensilingAspecializedMurskacrimpingmachineisusedtoprocessthegrain.Addthecrimpingadditiveintothecrimpingmachinetoachievegoodmixingofadditiveinthegrain.Rollersmustbecorrectlysettocrusheverygrain.
Crimpedgrainwithhighmoisturecontentiseasytoconsolidatetoexcludeair.Thissecuresgoodensiling.Ifthegrainistoodry(moisturebelow30%),watercouldbeaddedduringcrimping.However,itisalwaysbettertoharvestatthecorrectmoisturecontentthantoaddwaterafterwards.Duetothehighmoisturecontentofthegrain,thecrimpingandensilingshouldhappenwithin24hoursfromharvesting,otherwisethegrainmayheatup.Heatingisespeciallyaproblem,ifnocrimpingadditiveoronlybiologicaladditiveisused.
Ifthegrainiscrimpedinthefield,itisunloadeddirectlyfromthecombineintothecrimper,crimped,andatthesametimetheadditiveisadded.Finally,crimpedgrainisliftedwithelevatortothetrailerandtransportedtothestoragesite.
StorageCrimpedgraincanbestoredinplastictubes,bunker/horizontalsilos,clampsorairtighttowersilos.Consolidationinabunkersilooraplasticclampcanbedoneusingatractorwithafrontloaderorcorrespondingmachinery.Ifcrimpingisdoneatthesilo,elevatorisusedtotransportgrainfromthetrailerintothecrimper.Graincanalsobeloadedintothecrimperfromacleanconcretewithafarmloader.Capacityofthecrimperisdefinedbytheamountofgraintobecrimpedandbythecapacityofthecombinesothatcombiningcanbedonecontinuouslywithoutbreaks.

TheactualamountsofcrimpedgrainfedorusedinTMRarehigherthanthoseofdriedgrainduetolowerdrymattercontentofcrimpedgrain.Otherwisecrimpedgraincanbefedasdrygrainanditcancompletelyreplacedrygraininfeeding.Moisturecontentofcrimpedgraincansomewhatvary,thusdrymattercontentshouldbedeterminedeveryonetotwoweeksinordertoknowtheamountofdrymatterfedtotheanimals.Drymattercontentcanbeanalysedusingmicrowaveovenandletter-balance.
PigsCrimpedgraincanbefedtopigsassuch.Itfitsperfectlyforliquidfeeding.Inpractice,8–10%variationindrymattercontentofgraindoesnotaffectthedailygrowthorthefeedconversionratio.VitaminEcontentislowerincrimpedgrain.Inpractice,crimpedgraincanfullyreplacedriedgraininthefeedingofpigs.
PoultryCrimpedgrainassuchispalatablefeedforpoultry,too.Crimpedgrainimprovesbothdailyweightgainandfeedconversionratioofbroilerchick-ens.Thisisrelatedtothe25%higherenergyvalueofcrimpedgrainascom-paredtothatofdriedgrain.Energyvalueisincreasedduetothelowerß-glucancontentincrimpedgrainresultinginlowergutcontentviscosity.Thiseffectissimilartothatofß-glucanaseenzyme.Digestibilityoflysineandthre-onineareincreasedinbroilersfedcrimpedgrainascomparedtothosefeddriedgrain.Similarlytopigs,digestibilityofphosphorusisincreased,too.
