Factory-built fireplace chases should be constructed in themanner of all outside walls of the home to prevent cold airdrafting problems. The chase should not break the outsidebuilding envelope in any manner.

This means that the walls, ceiling, base plate and cantileverfloor of the chase should be insulated. Vapor and air infiltra-tion barriers should be installed in the chase as per regionalcodes for the rest of the home. Additionally, Hearth Tech-nologies recommends that the inside surfaces besheetrocked and taped for maximum air tightness.

To further prevent drafts, the firestops should be caulked toseal gaps. Gas line holes and other openings should becaulked or stuffed with insulation. If the unit is being in-stalled on a cement slab, we recommend that a layer ofplywood be placed underneath to prevent conducting coldup into the room. Be sure to include spark arrestors forwoodburning units if they are required.

THE CHASE SHOULD BE CONSTRUCTED SO THAT ALLCLEARANCES TO THE FIREPLACE ARE MAINTAINEDAS SPECIFIED WITHIN THIS INSTALLERS GUIDE.

Step 2. Framing the FireplaceFireplace framing can be built before or after the fireplace isset in place. Framing should be positioned to accommo-date wall coverings and fireplace facing material. The dia-gram below shows framing reference dimensions.

CAUTION: MEASURE FIREPLACE DIMENSIONS ANDVERIFY FRAMING METHODS AND WALL COVERINGDETAILS BEFORE FRAMING.

Step 3. Installing the Vent System

A. Vent System ApprovalsThe BRAVO model is approved to use D-series directvent pipe components and terminations (see Figures 4 &6). The AZTEC model is approved to use DVP-series ventpipe components (see Figures 4 & 5). Approved vent sys-tem components are labeled for identification. This pipe istested and listed as an approved component of the fire-place. The pipe is tested to be run inside an enclosed wall. There is no requirement for inspection openings at eachjoint within the wall. There is no required pitch for horizontalvent runs. NO OTHER VENTING SYSTEMS OR COMPO-NENTS MAY BE USED.Detailed installation instructions are included with eachvent termination kit and should be used in conjunction

with this Installers Guide. The flame and ember appearance may vary based on thetype of fuel burned and the venting configuration used.

Identifying Vent Components

The vent systems installed on this gas fireplace may in-clude one, two, or three 90° elbow assemblies. The rela-tionships of vertical rise to horizontal run in vent configura-tions using 90° elbows MUST BE strictly adhered to. Therise to run relationships are shown in the venting drawingsand tables. Refer to the diagrams on the next several pages.

NOTE: Two 45° elbows may be used in place of one 90° elbow.Rise to run ratios in the vent system must be followed if 45°elbows are used.

3. Assembling Minimum Installation (MI) Sections

MI sections are non-unitized so that they can be cut to acertain length. To use these sections, they must be cut tolength from the non-expanded end (see Figure 15). Theycan then be attached by first connecting the expanded endof the MI inner flue with the inner flue from the adjacent ventsection and securing with (3) screws. The expanded por-tion of the MI inner flue must overlap completely with theuntreated end of the adjacent vent section. The outer fluecan then be inserted into the adjacent out flue expandedend and attached to the next vent section with (3) screws. The other end of the MI vent section can then be attachedby fitting a snap lock section to it and snapping it togetheras normal.

Figure 15. Cut to length

AZTEC DVP PIPE ONLY:

2. Assembling Vent Sections

• Start the flared inner flue of section “A” over the innerflue of section “B”.

• Insert the outer flue of section “A” into the outer flue ofsection “B” (see Figure 13).

1. Attaching the Venting to the Fireplace

To attach the first DVP section to the fireplace collars, simplyslide the flared end of the inner flue of the DVP section overthe inner collar on the unit. At the same time, insert theouter flue into the outer collar on the unit. Push the ventsection into the unit collar until all the lances have snappedinto place. Tug slightly on the vent to confirm it has com-pletely locked in place.

OPTION B: Kiva-style arch

The second installation option requires the construction of akiva-style arch. This option recesses the unit into the wall suchthat construction of a hearth is not necessary (see Figure 32).

Figure 32.

Important Installation Facts (Option B):

• Framing depth increases from that shown in Figure 3, page12 (Dimension C). Dimension C will vary depending on thedepth of the desired kiva-style arch (see Figure 30).

• Once depth of desired kiva-style arch is determined (mini-mum of 3 3/32” and maximum 5”), add that to Dimen-sion C from Figure 3. Level, set and secure fireplaceusing nailing tabs provided on fireplace sides. Securewith screws or nails into BACK of framing studs.

• Discard Option A nailing tabs found in installation manualbag assembly.

• Kiva-style arch dimensions: Maximum depth = 5 inches(includes finish wall surface). Minimum depth = 3 3/32inches. NOTE: Above numbers are for combustible con-struction numbers. Arch may protrude up to 5 1/2” maxi-mum as measured from unit front face.

NOTE: The kiva-style arch depth may be any size if us-ing noncombustible materials i.e. concrete, steel, plas-ter, etc.

• A template is provided on unit shipping carton. Simplycut along the line and use as a template when construct-ing kiva-style arch (see Figure 33).

CAUTION: Template for kiva-style arch represents MINIMUMinside dimensions. When constructing kiva-style arch, youmust add thickness of finishing materials to achieve propersize of finished arch.

Constructing kiva-style arch Helpful Hints:

• Add thickness of finishing material plus 1/16” when trac-ing cardboard template to assure door fit after comple-tion of kiva-style arch.

• The kiva-style arch may be constructed from 3/8” to 1/2”plywood and wood blocking.

• Using 1/2” plywood and 2” x 4” blocking material creates a4 1/2” deep kiva-style arch structure allowing 1/2” drywall tocover and provide a 5” depth (maximum allowable).

• Use thinner materials on plywood faces or blocking for asmaller (more shallow) kiva-style arch or if thicker finish-ing materials are desired (see Figure 33).

Figure 33.

• Inside of the kiva-style arch can be finished using com-bustible materials. For example, thin drywall may be lay-ered to form around curved arch.
