Anyone who loves fashion loves everything about it and seeks it in many forms. There is nothing more exciting and makes your heart skip a beat than seeing fashion up close and personal during a runway show. Everything from the attendees, the atmosphere, the loud fast beats coming through the speakers to the models strutting down the runway wearing next season's hottest trends is intoxicating. Everyone should attend at least one fashion show in their lifetime, just to experience the unique energy that radiates from under the tents. I had the great honor to officially cover this year's Charleston Fashion Week that took place March 20-‐24 for Mod City. Charleston Fashion Week is touted as the hottest runway in the Southeast and is said by many to rival the likes of New York Fashion Week. Many know Charleston as The Holy City, but others refer to it as the fashion capital of the South... those are some big shoes to fill! And fill them they did! All the action took place downtown Charleston in Marion Square under huge white event tents. The biggest tent housed the runway with a tent for the Pop-‐Up Shop and one for the Style Lounge. These tents transformed Marion Square where people walk their dogs and lay out in bikinis into a fashion village. Anyone that passed through downtown quickly became aware that something major was happening in their city. The square was swarmed by people at any given moment with the Pop-‐Up Shop happening during the day where meet and greets were held with the Fashion Panel and Special Guests and vendors set up shop for everyone's shopping pleasure. Before the doors opened to the runway people got their photos snapped by photographers as they walked the red carpet, mingled while enjoying a few cocktails as they made their way around to the different vendors and DJs provided the hottest beats during this pre-‐party in the Style Lounge. Once the doors to the runway opened people were then ushered to their reserved seats. To get things going, each night started with a performance by local talent that ranged from dance crews, local bands and even a gospel choir. Then the fashion started with runway shows that highlighted the latest fashions from local boutiques and designers. After this began the Emerging Designer collections, each night four or five designers showed a portion of their collections as they competed against each other to be named that night's Emerging Designer winner. The winners from each night got to show their full

collections during Saturday night's finale, which then the Fashion Panel crowned this year's Emerging Designer winner. Following each night's Emerging Designer collections the audience was treated to a Featured Designer's collection. Some of the Featured Designers were more well known than others, but they all shared in common a great deal of talent. It was exciting to see collections from three of the competing designers on NBC's Fashion Star, Chris Benz and Faith Thornburg as well as others. This year's Fashion Panel and Special Guests featured some well-‐known celebrities and fashion elite. These people helped to narrow down the Emerging Designer applicants to the 20 semi-‐finalists that got to show their collections in the competition as well as named the ultimate winner. The Fashion Panel included fashion designers Chris Benz, Lindsey Carter, and Mychael Knight; creator of New York Fashion Week, Fern Mallis; founder of SocialPrimer.com and bow tie designer, K. Cooper Ray; founder of Decades, Cameron Silver; model and actress, Vanessa Lachey and ELLE fashion news director, Anne Slowey. The Special Guests did the same as they judged the Rock the Runway model competition. This panelist included supermodel and star on Bravo's reality series "The Real Housewives of Atlanta," Cynthia Bailey; international model scout, Karen Lee Grybowski; and America's Next Top Model season 16 runner-‐up, Molly O'Connell. This annual week long event continuously kept fashionistas stimulated and on their toes as they anticipated what would happen next. At every turn was a delicious morsel of fashion to sink pretty little teeth into as the Charleston Fashion Week experience was in full gear. Within these pages I will present to you all the fashion to be had from my week in the fashionably South.
The word intense just doesn't seem to do the Charleston Fashion Week Emerging Designer Competition: East very much justice. Each designer brought something different to the table that left the crowd wowed and thirsty for more. Luckily, there were four nights of the competition which bore four designers (plus one 'save' from the judges) that gave the crowd more on the fifth night as they each got to show their whole collection to a sold out crowd. The competition started months ago as 126 designers submitted their work in hopes of being picked as a semi-‐finalist to compete during fashion week. The Fashion Panel narrowed the search down to the lucky 20 semi-‐finalists that emerged from 16 states to compete for the title of 2012 CFW Emerging Designer: East and a grand prize that boosts a $20,000 value which included: $5,000 cash, $10,000 worth of online marketing and promotional package from F22 Designs, A David Yurman cable classic cuff from REEDS Jewelers, Professional lookbook images of their fall 2012 fall collection by J. Balliet: Photographer and a free runway show at next year's Charleston Fashion Week. Designers were also competing for the title of People's Choice Awards. Each night the audience could vote for their favorite designer via text message and at the end of the night the designer with the most votes won a prize of $250. I attended the shows on Thursday, Friday and Saturday so I didn't get a chance to see each of the Emerging Designer's collections. The collections I did get to see were amazing in their own ways, I didn't like all of the collections, but I did like certain aspects from each of the designer's collections.
Charleston Fashion Week: Thursday Nancy Crowell Childrenswear Fall 2012 Nancy's childrenswear collection was bright, fun and vintage inspired. The clothes had just as much personality as the kids who modeled her collection. Nancy

described this collection as being vintage circus inspired and that was very clear in the newsboy-‐esque mini suits and Shirley Temple poof dresses in bright metallic prints. I can definitely see kids donning her creations for photo shoots and special occasions and if I personally had kids of my own already they would definitely be wearing a Nancy Crowell design for their next birthday! I was impressed and found myself smiling the entire time her line graced the runway. Vartika Vikram Womenswear Fall 2012 Vartika's womenswear collection was absolutely stunning! It was by far my favorite Emerging Designer collection and it landed her as one of the finalists chosen to show their full collections during the finale. The designs were clean, crisp and airy. I could easily picture myself wearing every single piece in her fall collection. The forms were sculpted and geometry, but very softly done so that it translated high fashion into a ready to wear collection that many runway collections can get lost in the transformation. The color palette was very neutral with lots of creams, browns and bronzes, which I felt was very refreshing for fall when most tend to, highlight darker tones. The pieces that featured the huge pop of color trend did so tastefully with subtlety. I truly cannot say enough good things about Vartika's fall 2012 collection!
Clockwise: Vartika Vikram, Nancy Crowell, Hazel Bae, Jordan Lee Brooks, Amy Cochran Quinn and Kelly Elizabeth Ruehlman.
Jordan Lee Brooks Womenswear Fall 2012 Jordan said the goal when designing is to, "create wearable art that makes women look and feel beautiful." You can tell art is a great influence on his designs. His pieces are structured, yet extremely wearable and loose fitting. His collection takes note of the dark tones of the season with mimosa yellow color blocking. The color pairings of yellow and black is a hard color trend to pull off and not look like a bumblebee, however Jordan mastered the combination in the perfect way. Amy Cochran Quinn & Kelly Elizabeth Ruehlman Womenswear Fall 2012 Amy and Kelly create their whole collection around a character they made up named, Dahlia. Their Dahlia has an elaborate story of likes and dislikes, personality traits and even the type of places you'll find her on any given night. The story of Dahlia was almost more exciting than the actual collection -‐ not to say that the collection was bad, though! For me personally, the majority of the line I could imagine teachers and librarians who favor frumpy clothes wearing. The palette was somewhat musky, some of the pieces looked like comfy pajamas and then there were pieces that I wished I had in my closet! The black and white two toned pants where phenomenal and hit the mark for the next hot trend on the horizon. The belted vest was a highlight as well for me and the long color blocked dress was their collection's money shot. Hazel Bae Womenswear Fall 2012 Hazel's fall collection is definitely looking for a very cold winter! Her collection featured white faux fur, chunky wool, crocheted sheer pieces and silk. Her designs period were very bulky with sweaters and sweater dresses that often featured thick collars or hefty sleeves. Then in the middle of her collection appeared a black and edgy party dress that left me a little confused as it broke up the flow of the wool going down the runway. I understand this particular dress represented the Northern Lights, however, for me it didn't work with the rest of the collection, but I did love the black cocktail dress. While I greatly respect and admire all the hard handwork that went into each knitted design, I can't say that I personally would wear them. The black party dress is a different story.
Charleston Fashion Week: Friday Keely Lauren Cansler Womenswear Fall 2012 During the video intro to Emerging Designer Keely Cansler she said that this collection was greatly inspired by the beauty of chandeliers and with this I became even more eager to see her designs walk down the runway. I love chandeliers and even have one hanging from the ceiling of my bedroom. Having researched Keely's
past designs I knew that what she was going to bring to Charleston would be fierce. Her designs are feminine with a hard yet powerful edge to them. She incorporates materials such as delicate silks with metal embellishments. Seeing Keely's collection in person did not disappoint! Her ready to wear collection featured free flowing designs with velvet and sheer fabrics being the big numbers showcased. A few of her designs featured the bow tie blouse trend but were done in a very wearable fashion that did not read as frumpy, which I loved. A few of her pieces featured her signature use of metals with a metal fringe that encompassed the model's waist. The last piece of her collection was definitely a showstopper. The collection ended with a gorgeous rich burgundy velvet and silk georgette gown that would flatter any body shape. Emily Pollard Womenswear Fall 2012 Emily has said that her fall collection is very much inspired by the idea of the end of the world's doomsday and that idea was translated well into her designs. The eight piece collection that was shown Friday night looked like a fashionably fit army of models draped in rocker-‐chic badass designs ready to kick ass while taking names till the very end. Her pieces were structured and no detail was overlooked. Fierce smooth black fur vests and shoulders paired with leather dressed four of her warrior models while electric blue satins, duo toned pants and tights adorned others. The empowered woman trend is still brightly burning. Ashley Newsome Womenswear Fall 2012 This collection perfectly marries back in time classic pieces with modern high fashion edge. Reminiscent of Oscar Wilde with velvet capes, top hats and collars brought into today's world with rhinestones, metal chain shoulder embellishments and studs. My favorite piece of her collection was the last design on the runway the velvet form fitting floor length gown. Ashley gave the classic long sleeve gown new life with cutouts that expose the ribs, added studs and placed metal chain links to the shoulders that took this gown that could have easily belonged in your grandma's closet to new hip and on-‐trend heights. Definitely a piece I would love to add to my closet. Shelley Lucille Smith Womenswear Fall 2012 A futuristic renaissance is the best description for Shelley's fall 2012 womenswear collection. All designs featured pops of colors with bright orange or blue against a greenish brown canvas. Some pieces spoke of a Victorian or Medieval flavor with the cut of the dress or the sheet of metal adornments. Others were structured angled hemlines that reminded me of futuristic detail. The line was refreshing with a creatively artistic perspective.
Hannah Goff Womenswear Fall 2012 This collection won Hannah the title of 2012 Emerging Designer: East. The collection is extremely print driven with no solid designs and only head to toe prints. Whether you're a fan of her collection or not, it's undeniable that it commands your full attention. Based in bright colors, loud and busy patterns Hannah created herself on garments that ranged from form fitting and oversized and were carried on the runway by canvas shoe wearing models. In an artistic sense I loved her collection and it's many colors, shapes and sizes.

NBC Fashion Star Competing Designers Before heading to Charleston one of the shows that I was most looking forward to seeing was the collaborative Featured Designer show designed by three of the competing designers on the hit NBC show Fashion Star, Sarah Parrot, Luciana Scarabello and Nikki Poulos. Fashion Star is a show that I had been anxiously awaiting it's premiere for months, so when I heard that three of the designers were showing at Charleston Fashion Week I just could not wait. As one would expect, every piece that was shown was 100 percent ready to wear, which I loved that aspect. The three designers all come from different backgrounds and their designs are completely different from one another. However, I could easily see myself wearing almost every design that appeared on the runway that night. My favorite designs were from Sarah Parrott, who is also my favorite designer on the competition show. Her dresses always seem to be right on when it comes to what women would actually wear and are something that I just naturally gravitate too. However, all the designs were fabulous and something for every occasion from the perfect little black dress, office-‐friendly to weekend wear. These ladies are phenomenal! Chris Benz Chris Benz talks a lot about his obsession with color and this use of color has earned him the nickname as The Prince of Color. From his nickname to his pink hair to his line being inspired by Andy Warhol I was really expecting the runway to be splashed with color as his collection graced the audience. I wouldn't quite say I was disappointed, but I was expecting more in the form of pops of color than what was shown. The line was still fabulous! I loved the geometrical designs, the sparkle and I adored how the clothes either draped on the models or carefully caressed the curves of a woman. This is his spring and summer 2012 collection which can be bought now in stores that carry his brand across the country as well as online. Any of his pieces could easily be worn to liven up office attire or to a warm summer evening soiree. Faith Thornburg Faith Thornburg's collection was my favorite line that I saw from the Featured Designer presentations. It was full of class, elegance and simplicity that oozed femininity. Although, this collection is a bridal collection, many of the pieces could be worn for other special occasions as well as to make a statement on your wedding day. Faith is based in Savannah and the romantic element of the beautiful Southern city seems to have played a great deal of inspiration to her designs. Some of her designs flow in the wind while others show off the curvy female silhouette both of

which bring a classy yet sexy appeal to the woman wearing them. "Nudes blend with the skin to add sex appeal to dresses that you would typically expect to see in white," said the designer of her fall 2012 collection. Charlotte Hess Charlotte Hess was last year's Charleston Fashion Week Emerging Designer: East winner and as part of her grand prize package was invited back to show at this year's event under the Featured Designer title. Her collections bring to the runway a traditional technique that most have moved away from. All of Charlotte's designs are hand knitted, from the sweaters down to the very hem of the pants. This year's fall 2012 collection is farm hand inspired with knitted overalls, dresses and shawls. Her line draws attention to each and every detail as every piece is carefully created by hand and most featured tedious small stitches that left the garments fitted and wearable instead of heavy and bulky.

My love for fashion has me jumping at the chance to attend any runway show, but there is a special kind of excitement that runs through my veins for a bridal show. There's just something about bridal shows that makes me salivate with delight. I am captivated as these traditional and wildly original gowns trance down the runway I can't help but fixate on every detail from the embroidery, embellishments to the gown as a whole. Needless to say I was (not so) patiently awaiting the Saturday morning Charleston Fashion Week Bridal Show.
I had heard that the runway tent transforms into a wedding
wonderland for the annual bridal show, and that it did! As everyone gathered outside the tent was led into the tent we were greeted with beautiful floral displays, wedding vendors, and complimentary mimosas. Gorgeous chandeliers hung from the ceiling in a sea of paper umbrellas strung upside down. Attendees nibbled on cupcakes and light hors d'oeuvres as they ventured to the different vendors around the tent before making their way to their seats where a swag bag full of bridal goodies awaited. The atmosphere greatly captured the feeling of attendee a grand affair even before the local boutiques and designer collections even hit the runway!
Calvin is the first ever Charleston Fashion Week Bridal Emerging Designer winner and he was able to show his gorgeous collection during the Saturday morning Bridal Show. His collection focused on a palette of blues, dusty pink and white as he paired velvets with light

fabrics that cascade in the wind. “My design philosophy is to turn every woman into a Southern belle with an edge on her wedding day by creating gowns with an understated modesty and strength in detail,” said Calvin. Some of his designs featured high necklines paired with velvet pants or pencil skirts while others featured corset-‐like bodices with beautiful pleated chiffon skirts. The adornments and embroidery were just as stunning.
Rachel who has made a name for herself in the South as the go-‐to designer for beautiful gowns, presented her collection of ready to wear bridal gowns at this year's bridal show. This collection featured palettes of soft roses and creams in soft and feminine fabrics that perfectly draped the silhouette of a woman. Her gowns of delicate lace detail and chiffon were breath-‐taking as they seemed to float down the runway. Even the moss and floral covered dress at the end was stunning in it's incredible attention to detail. Rachel knows how to design gowns that will make any woman feel as if she is a goddess. Who doesn't want to feel like a goddess on one of the biggest days of her life?

Mychael Knight
Mychael Knight is a season three alumni of Project Runway and a long-‐time Fashion Panelist at Charleston Fashion Week. However, this year Mychael traded in his front row seat at the Bridal Show for a spot backstage to debut his first ever bridal collection. His bridal collection kept the traditional pure white palette, but added neon pops of color with yellow belts and purple eyeshadow. His collection is elegant with an edge as he brought many structured aspects to the form of the gowns. Some of his gowns featured light and almost sheer fabrics while others were solid in fabric and design. This is definitely a collection for a bride who is a trendsetter that wants both aspects of traditional and modern originality morphed into one gorgeous wedding gown.
