Careers Blog
Task 6: Blog post (20 marks)
Write a blog post on how to successfully secure a job using information from the B1 Data File and your notes. Write around 150 words. [model answer]
Welcome to Careers Blog. In this blog, we’re going to talk about things you need to know about job-hunting
and further studies. [DF 2] To start off, let’s talk about things you need to pay attention to when you look for
jobs.
When you write your CV and covering letter, keep them short and succinct, [DF 5] and tailor them to
fi t the job description. [DF 1 & 5] You should briefl y mention your skills and experience that match the
position and provide specifi c examples to demonstrate your abilities.
Furthermore, try to do research so you know what your employers are looking for, [DF 1] and include relevant
keywords that appear in the job description. [DF 5] It’s also helpful to have a portfolio that shows all your
previous work ready to be sent along with your CV. [DF 4]
Potential employers may invite you to an interview after reviewing your application. When attending
an interview, you must look clean and well-groomed. Remember to be polite and punctual. Being early
(but not too early) gives you time to freshen up and gives your potential employer a good impression.
During the interview, it’s essential to be yourself. Thinking before answering is equally important.
Make sure that you don’t talk too much or act overconfi dent.
We’ll provide more job-hunting tips in our future entries. Subscribe to our blog now and never miss out! [DF 2]

Task 7: Application letter (18 marks)
Complete the sample job application letter using information from the B1 Data File. Write around 150 words.
[model answer]
Dear Sir/Madam
I am writing to apply for the position of reporter with reference to your advertisement on Jumpin’ Jobs
(reference number 0005678E).
I believe I would make an ideal candidate for the position as I am currently studying at the University of
Kowloon majoring in Journalism with a minor in English. I also obtained 5** for both English and Chinese
in the HKDSE Examination.
I have worked as an editorial intern at News Press Group [DF 6 & 7] and have been a reporting intern for two
consecutive summers. [DF 6 & 7] During this internship, I worked under tight deadlines, [DF 3, 6 & 7] so I
am confident that I will be able to work well under stress. [DF 3 & 6] I have also been an intern at the Hong
Kong Journal, where I managed online content and multimedia materials independently. [DF 6 & 7] I also have
experience in photography and I am a committee member of the Photography Club at my university. [DF 6 & 7]
Enclosed is a copy of my curriculum vitae [DF 2] which provides details of my qualifications for the position.
Please do not hesitate to contact me on 5544 4455 [DF 7] or email me at [email protected]. [DF 7] I look
forward to hearing from you. [DF 2] Thank you for your time and consideration.
Yours faithfully
Sally Chan

ALL-IN-ONE (Vol.2)
Dear Christina
Thank you for your message enquiring about being a veterinarian. In order to become a vet, you will need
to obtain a veterinarian degree. I would also recommend that you get more experience by volunteering at
animal shelters, job shadowing a veterinarian or getting an extra qualifi cation, for example. Those aspiring
to become a vet should also be good at science, be brave and level-headed, and they should love animals and
be compassionate towards them.
If you want to study veterinary science in Australia, there are a few options you could consider. First,
the Australian University in Perth offers the Veterinary Explorations Programme – a two-month summer
programme. The Royal School of Veterinary Medicine in Melbourne offers a fi ve-year (full time) Bachelor of
Veterinary Science programme. Also, the United College of Veterinary Studies in Sydney has a bachelor’s
programme in veterinary medicine that lasts four years (full time).
I hope this information has been helpful. Let us know if you have any other questions.
Best regards
Joseph Yim

Are you figuring out which career path to take or how to get a job? We at Teens Express have discussed career
choices with a lot of teenagers. Using our experience, we have come up with a few things you need to think
about when choosing a career.
Firstly, ask yourself ‘what job would suit me?’ [DF 1] To answer this, you need to know yourself well. Think
about your strengths and weaknesses as well as your likes and dislikes because this will help you identify the
type of work that you will enjoy doing. For example, if you are interested in becoming a youth worker, you might
ask yourself questions like ‘am I empathetic?’, ‘do I have good leadership skills and can I work in a team?’, or
‘am I patient and understanding?’
Now that you have understood yourself a little more, the next question to ask yourself is ‘what opportunities are
available for me?’ [DF 1] You should see what opportunities match your qualities. [DF 8] You can make use of
our search tool (www.t-express.org/careers/search) [DF 7] to look up options for your field of study [DF 8] or
our careers list (www.t-express.org/careers/list) [DF 7] to read up on specific jobs. [DF 8]
Having identified one or two suitable career options, you can consider the next question: ‘what can I do to get the
job I want?’ [DF 1] We would strongly encourage you to join our Career Enhancement Course. [DF 8] Through
this course, you will learn how to write a winning CV and covering letter, interview strategies as well as gaining
insight into various skills and career development.
These three questions can help you decide which career path to take. If you have further questions regarding
your career choice, feel free to contact us through the Ask Our Experts section of our website! [DF 2]
