Strictly speaking, digital refers to theencoding and manipulation of data in a binary format, a sequence of 1´s and 0´s. Each position (0 or 1) in a sequence is a bitand a sequence of 8 bits is a byte.

The ENIAC, 1946, is considered by manyas the first eletronic digital computer.

Digital differs from analogue because it is discrete, while analogue is a continous, physical and more accurate (surprised?) representation of data.

So, for instance, in order to transmitdigital data via a carrier network a modem is necessary to convert digital to analoguewhen sending and converting the signalbach to digital when receiving

Despite of being a finite representationand less accurate than analoguetechnology, digital is easier to store andmanipulate, and much more durable andcompatible;

The first mobile communication devicesproduced came out during world war II, notexactly handhelds, with distance limitations in many cases and based on radio frequencies.

But only in 1983, the first mobile phone, theMotorola DynaTAC 8000X, was released onthe 1st US 1G cellular network, fromAlmeritech.

* a 36kg device was not exactly a handheld, neither mobile, is it?

The 2000´s brought the 3G technologywith new possibilities, such as bettermobile internet protocols, multimedia content, etc
