Mobile lidar is revolutionizing how departments of transportation survey transportation corridors,

as well as supporting a wide range of other engineering applications. It achieves survey-grade accuracies for design and as-built surface modeling, it performs systematic inventory of transportation assets, and it facilitates clash detection and clearance measurements for bridges and overhead obstructions.

Ayres has been providing mobile lidar services since 2011. As an engineering firm, we offer a unique perspective on this technology as we design each project with the engineer in mind. We find that using mobile lidar brings efficiencies in the survey process and is a safe and economically beneficial alternative to operating multiple field crews in busy traffic environments.

Ayres knows that there’s a significant difference between capturing a lidar point cloud consisting of billions of 3D

points and thousands of digital images – and another thing to prepare practical and usable Civil 3D surfaces models for the engineers’ design process.
