Week beginning 04/05/20

English

This week we are going to do some writing linked to the story ‘The Egg’ by M. P. Robertson that I shared a reading of last week.

Task 1 – The author of ‘The Egg’ – Rainbow readingLast week I shared a video with you of me reading the story – ‘The Egg’ by M. P. Robertson. This week I emailed the author of ‘The Egg’ and he was kind enough to make us a fantastic video with some information about himself, a little tour of his writing ‘shed’ and he also did his own reading of the story. Watch his video using the link below. Whilst watching the video think about which parts of the story you enjoy and why. It is important to use the conjunction because when you are explaining why.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKZqw3HKAMM

This year we have done a lot of work on using the Rainbow Reading cards.

Today I would like you to use the ‘Your Personal Opinions’ Rainbow Reading card to write a mini book review. I would like you to use the sentence stems show on the card when writing your review.

E.g. I liked the part when George taught the dragon to breath fire because it meant he could also cook his sausages. I didn’t like the bit when the dragon had to distress a damsel because the little girl looked scared.

You do not need to use all of the sentence stems but you could pick 3 or 4 to use. Try to write extended sentences using the conjunctions – and, so, but and because.

Page 2: molehillprimaryacademy.org.ukmolehillprimaryacademy.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/...  · Web viewTask 1 – Tally charts. Complete the tally charts below and answer the questions about

Task 2 – Writing a letter to the author of ‘The Egg’The author of ‘The Egg’ is a man called Mark Robertson. I hope you enjoyed watching his video yesterday and listening to him reading the story – I know I did! Today I would like you to write a letter to him thanking him for reading his book to you and also sharing with him what you liked about the story. You can use the sentences stems/sentences you wrote yesterday within your letter.

Once you have written your letters please share them with me by emailing a photo of your letter to [email protected] . I will then share these letters with the author Mark. I look forward to receiving your letters.

Task 3 – Designing a dragonBefore completing todays learning please watch my YouTube video sharing part of another of Mark Robertson’s books – ‘Dare to care: Pet dragon’.

Today I would like you to design your own pet dragon. Please draw a picture of your dragon, make sure you include lots of detail and think carefully about the different parts of your dragon. Tomorrow you will be writing a description of your dragon and you will need to be able to describe all the different parts. I have included a photo of the ‘Dragonatomy’ page of the ‘Dare to care: Pet dragon’ book below to give you some ideas.

Another fantastic dragon story is ‘Tell me a dragon’ by Jackie Morris. This book has some amazing illustrations which may inspire your dragon designs. Here is a link to the author Jackie Morris sharing the story - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MAdG102siOU

Task 4 – Describing your dragonToday you are going to be writing a detailed description of your dragon. Before writing your description you may want to add some key adjectives to your dragon drawing. I have made a YouTube video showing you how I would add adjectives to my drawings. There is also a video of me modelling how to write a description of my dragon. You can find the videos on the Tiger class page of the website.

Please share your finished dragon drawings and descriptions with me by emailing them to [email protected]

Task 5 – Spelling lesson – le or elIn our spelling lessons this week we would have been learning about the word endings le and el. Please read the words listed below and then onto a piece of paper sort them into whether they have the le or el ending.

applelittle

cameltinsel

parcelangel gigglelabel

circlepuddle squirreltickle

middletunneltoweltable

On the class page of the school website I have also added some spelling activity sheets and a ‘which word looks right’ activity for children to complete.

SpellingsFor your spelling homework this week please learn the following spellings – apple, little, circle, middle, angel, parcel, squirrel, label, tunnel. Remember to write a sentence including each word. You could even challenge yourself to include several of the spellings within a sentence. E.g. I saw a little squirrel climbing up into the middle of an apple tree.

MathsMental Maths activities

● Practice counting on and back from different start number e.g. 25 - 26, 27, 28, 29, 30 and 25 - 24, 23, 22, 21, 20, 19. If you are finding this tricky please use the hundred square below to support your counting.

● Continue counting in 2s and 5s using the resources from previous weeks. Remember to spend some time practicing your times tables on times table rockstars.

● Have you played my mental maths games - Check out my YouTube video from last week showing you some fun games you can play to practice your instant recall of number facts. You can find this on the Tiger class page of the school website.

As part of your mental maths lessons this week I would also like you to revisit your 2D and 3D shape learning by playing some of the following interactive games –

Shape patterns. Whilst playing this game see if you can name the shapes you are using within each pattern - https://www.topmarks.co.uk/ordering-and-sequencing/shape-patterns

Lines of symmetry. Complete the pictures so that they show symmetry. https://www.topmarks.co.uk/symmetry/symmetry-matching

Lines of symmetry. Sort the shapes into whether they are showing a correct line of symmetry or not. https://www.topmarks.co.uk/symmetry/symmetry-sorting

Explore making different shapes using the interactive geoboard. Talk about how many sides and corners the 2D shapes you make have - https://apps.mathlearningcenter.org/geoboard/

Use the spy lens to guess the different 2D and 3D shapes being hidden - https://www.ictgames.com/mobilePage/shiftingShapes/index.html

Task 3 – pictogramsPictograms are a way of presenting data you have collected in a tally chart using images to represent the data. Complete the following pictograms.

Task 4 – Drawing your own pictogram

Today you are going to create your own pictogram to represents the data shown in this tally chart. The tally chart shows my family and friends favourite fruit.

Remember to draw pictures to represent each data category (fruit). For example, your tally chart will need to include pictures to represent seven people liking strawberries e.g.

InquiryOur transdisciplinary theme for Term 5 would have been – Sharing the Planet.

Within this our central idea would have been – Living things may have different requirements in order to survive.

This term we would have been answering the following questions: What are the different parts of a plant? What do plants need to grow? How do we look after a plant? How are plants adapted to live in different places? Where are animal’s homes? How should we treat an animals home? Why do animals live in different places? How are animals adapted to their environment? What are the different groups of animals? How do animals differ by the foods they eat? What interesting facts can I learn about animals?

Page 10: molehillprimaryacademy.org.ukmolehillprimaryacademy.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/...  · Web viewTask 1 – Tally charts. Complete the tally charts below and answer the questions about

Please continue to discuss these questions with your child. Are you able to answer any of them yet? Hopefully by the end of this term we will be able to answer many of these questions.

When we are at school we talk about the Learning Profile Attributes within all lessons and look for example of children demonstrating these attributes throughout the school day. See if you can continue to practise the school’s Learner Profile Attributes whilst completing your learning at home:

Inquiry learning tasks

Task 1 – Science – Carnivore, omnivore and herbivoreJust like humans animals eat different things. Today you are going to be learning about the terms carnivore, omnivore and herbivore. Watch the following videos to learn about what animals eat - https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zk7h34j/articles/zjcq7nb After watching the video complete the quiz underneath the video.

I have uploaded a link to a sorting activity linked to this learning. If you aren’t able to print this resource please draw a table with the headings - carnivores, omnivores and herbivores. Under each heading please draw and label pictures of animals which fall into each group.

Here are some posters about carnivores, omnivores and herbivores to help you.

Page 11: molehillprimaryacademy.org.ukmolehillprimaryacademy.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/...  · Web viewTask 1 – Tally charts. Complete the tally charts below and answer the questions about

Task 2 – Science – Food chainsFollowing on from task 1 today you will be learning about food chains. Please watch the following videos to understand what a food chain is - https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/z8hxpv4 https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zbnnb9q/articles/zwbtxsg

Here are some examples of a three link food chain –

Using the pictures below please create two different three linked food chains. If you aren’t able to print these images you can always draw them yourself. Remember to put arrows between your images to show the direction of the food chain. You could also write sentences describing the food chain e.g. The rabbit eats the carrots which get their energy from the sun. The rabbit is a herbivore. The rabbit is eaten by the fox which is a carnivore.

Task 3 – PSHCE – Good to be meWithin our PSHCE lessons we would have been looking at the unit – Good to be me. Within the first lesson I would have introduce the theme of ‘good to be me’ and discussed what this might mean. I would then have explained that we are all individuals and that being different makes us special and is a good thing. We would have then had a discussion about our differences - not only our physical appearance differences but also that our individual thoughts, beliefs and feelings make us different. Parents please discuss these ideas with your children.

Page 12: molehillprimaryacademy.org.ukmolehillprimaryacademy.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/...  · Web viewTask 1 – Tally charts. Complete the tally charts below and answer the questions about

After discussing the above you could make a poster or passport about yourself, showing how you are an individual. I have uploaded a passport template onto the class website but you could record your learning onto a piece of paper.

Task 4 – Art – Drawing animalsHave a look at the YouTube channel – Art for kids hub. https://www.youtube.com/user/ArtforKidsHubThe channel is full of fun videos teaching you how to draw almost everything. Linked to our learning on animals pick some animals to draw. You could follow these videos and learn how to draw a tiger - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mwwZ3sAn3ZQhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kAx8-pFj2CU

Task 5 – Music/art – Carnival of the animalsIn our music lessons this term we would have been learning about music appreciation and listening to a piece of music called ‘Carnival of the animals. I have uploaded a PowerPoint about this piece of music onto our class webpage.

Page 13: molehillprimaryacademy.org.ukmolehillprimaryacademy.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/...  · Web viewTask 1 – Tally charts. Complete the tally charts below and answer the questions about

Music appreciation involves listening carefully to a piece of music and thinking about the following questions –

How does the music make you feel? What instruments can you hear being played? Is the music high of low pitched? What is the tempo of the music? Does the music move slowly or quickly? What are the dymanics of the music? Are the instruments being played loudly or

quietly? What animals do you think are being represented by the music?

Within class the children would have been given a large sheet of paper and asked to draw the different animals represented within the music whilst listening carefully to the music. You could try doing this at home. Here is a YouTube link to the music - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rE4CATvZ188&list=PL5EDDC3CD0593C9E0

Additional resources –

Resources from Maidstone MuseumMaidstone museum has produced some lovely resources linked to their exhibitions. The Learning Team at the museum have been working, with Spike Dino’s help, to create a series of info-activities allowing children to learn from at home. Each week the library staff are uploading 5 downloadable activity sheets that will include a selfie of Spike with an object in the Museum, basic information about the object and a fun activity idea. Use the link below to check out their activities - https://museum.maidstone.gov.uk/learn/learning-with-spike-at-home/

Design a mascot for ParalympicsGBOn the Tiger class page of the school website I have uploaded a PowerPoint and design sheet which Mrs Hurley-Gale has sent me to do with the Olympic and Paralympic games.

Team GB has a mascot called Pride, but the ParalympicsGB team do not. The PowerPoint explains a competition Team GB and the ParalympicGB team are running asking you to design a mascot for ParalympicsGB team? The PowerPoint explains the competition and how to enter.

I would love to see your designs so please email them to the [email protected] address and I can share these with Miss Hurley Gale too.

Keeping active
