“In a nearly wordless picture book, Kim and Sanchez examine the difficulties, adjustments, and eventual triumphs that accompany one boy’s transition from an unspecified Asian nation to New York City with his family…For children who have moved to an unfamiliar country or town, it’s a sensitive reminder that they are not alone; for others, it’ll be an eye-opening window into what those kids are going through.” Publishers Weekly
“A beautiful story about the challenges of moving to a new country, Sánchez’s hectic style effectively captures the sometimes overwhelming nature of the immigrant experience.” Huffington Post
“Kim and Sánchez bring to their lively pages the heightened perceptions of the recently arrived…From the moment he lands at J.F.K., the images vibrate with energy and detail…The boy starts out feeling isolated and unhappy, but then embarks on a solo journey through his neighborhood that culminates in the making of a friend and a newfound sense of belonging.”The New York Times

Forces in Action explores the science behind the natural and man-made forces that are all around us. Discover why objects fall to the ground, how simple mechanisms – pulleys, gears and levers – create forces and how forces help us in our daily lives.
When two objects rub against each other they cause ‘friction’. Friction is vitally important in our lives. Friction between our shoes and the ground stops us from slipping when we walk. Friction between tyres and the road allows cars and lorries to move forwards and prevents them from skidding. Friction also causes heat – you can start a fire by rubbing two sticks together.
Friction also slows things down. A ball rolling along the ground will gradually get slower until it stops, because of friction between the ball and the ground. Car and bicycle brakes also use friction to slow a moving vehicle down.
FRICTION
When blocks of rubber squeeze against the sides of a bicycle wheel, friction stops the wheel from turning. But the bicycle itself will only stop if there is enough friction between the tyres and the road – brakes are of little use in icy conditions.

TAKING ACTIONMost schools in the South remained segregated after Brown v. Board of
Education because forcing change through legal cases was slow. From
the mid-1950s onwards, more and more civil rights protestors took direct
action to try to speed up change. Direct action is when people carry out
public acts that disrupt or break the law in order to raise awareness of an
issue. Rosa Parks refusing to give up her seat to a white woman on a public
bus in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1955 was an early example. The NAACP
planned this action, and used Rosa’s arrest to spark a boycott of city
buses. After 13 months of lost business and bad publicity, the state made
segregation illegal on its buses.
Other famous examples of taking action for civil rights in the 1950s include
the Little Rock Nine. Nine black children, including Melba Pattillo, tried to
attend a white-only school in 1957. The resulting violence and protests
from people against segregation led to the US government stepping in to
force the governor of Arkansas, Orval Faubus, to desegregate its schools.

Fifteen-year-old Elizabeth Eckford (in sunglasses) walks past angry white students during the Little Rock Nine action.
ORVAL FAUBUS1910–1994
BORN: Combs, Arkansas
ROLE: Governor of Arkansas from 1954 to 1967. In 1957, he ordered the National Guard to stop black children going to Little Rock High School to keep law and order. US President Dwight D. Eisenhower ordered government troops in to protect the Little Rock Nine so they could attend school.
Did You Know?Faubus ended segregation in Arkansas on state public transport when first elected governor.
WHO IN HISTORY
DANGERIt is difficult to imagine now how strongly some white people felt about civil
rights campaigners in the 1950s. Many were members of groups such as
the Ku Klux Klan (KKK). The KKK was a terrorist organization whose actions
included firebombing homes and churches, and lynching. Lynching
involved a mob seizing, beating, and usually violently killing people. In
1957, for example, the KKK offered a $10,000 reward to anyone who killed
one of the Little Rock Nine.
HISTORY DETECTIVES: sourcesDiaries, interviews, autobiographies, and photos are primary sources, or records of events created at the time under study. Secondary sources are interpretations and analyses of primary sources. They are usually created by people who weren’t there at the time. Examples include books, biographies, and films. Secondary sources can provide good overviews to direct research, but a range of primary sources can add details and bring the past to life.

FalstaffIn the Henry IV plays, Sir John Falstaff is a drunkard, a liar, and a thief. He spends most of his time with criminals and prostitutes, and some of it with the future Henry V. Shakespeare makes him full of contradictions, and a compelling character at the heart of the play. But Shakespeare didn’t call him Falstaff. Shakespeare originally called him Oldcastle, the name of a real knight in Henry IV’s reign. Shakespeare’s company performed Henry IV Part 1 at court over Christmas 1596. It was a great success, but not with Lord Cobham, the new Lord Chamberlain. Oldcastle was one of his ancestors, and he was outraged. Shakespeare was a famous and successful actor and playwright then, and has become world famous since. But in 1596, he was nowhere near as important as Lord Cobham. Shakespeare changed the name to Falstaff, and in
Shakespeare
wrote alone
Over 50 per cent of Elizabethan and Jacobean plays were collaborations between two or more playwrights. Shakespeare mainly wrote alone, but he also collaborated with other writers. An early collaboration is Henry VI Part 1 (collaborator unknown). At the end of his career, he wrote with John Fletcher (who succeeded him as the company’s playwright). Together they wrote three plays: Henry VIII, The Two Noble Kinsmen, and Cardenio. Only Henry VIII is in the First Folio, and the text of Cardenio has not survived. Scholars think he also worked with other writers in Timon of Athens, All’s Well That Ends Well, and Pericles. Then there are plays like Sir Thomas More and Edward III, where Shakespeare wrote a scene or two in a multi-author play.7
Myththe epilogue to Henry IV Part 2, he apologized:
our humble author will continue the story, with Sir John in it, and make you merry with fair Katherine of Fraunce, where (for anything I know) Falstaffe shall die of a sweat, unless already a be killed with your hard opinions. For Olde-castle dyed a martyre, and this is not the man.5
Deaths in the familyMany scholars think Shakespeare’s work gets darker in the late 1590s. In August 1596, his 11-year old son, Hamnet, died in Stratford. We don’t know why he died, nor whether Shakespeare was in Stratford or in London then. We may see his grief in the lines he wrote that year in King John, as Lady Constance mourns her son: “Grief fills the room up of my absent child: | Lies in his bed, walks up and down with me”.6 But it can be dangerous for a biographer to use the plays in this way. These lines come in a passage where Constance is criticized for showing too much grief.
Less unexpectedly, Shakespeare’s father, John, died in his seventies in September 1601.
Falstaff (Roger Allam) keeps a modern audience spellbound, in Henry IV Part 2, at Shakespeare’s Globe in 2010.
Queen Elizabeth and Merry Wives
of Windsor
There is a myth that Queen Elizabeth enjoyed Falstaff so much that she demanded a new play where Falstaff is in love (Merry Wives of Windsor). She gave Shakespeare two weeks to get it ready, so she could see it. The truth is that this tale was first printed in 1702, over 100 years later, and it was linked to a new performance of the play. It is unlikely to be true.
Myth
FACTS
Francis Meres’ list of plays by Shakespeare includes Love’s Labour’s Won. This is a mystery. It could be a different title for a surviving play – it fits The Taming of The Shrew – or it could have been a sequel to Love’s Labour’s Lost, which seems to end in the middle of the story. A play with this title was printed, and it is on a list of a bookseller’s stock in 1603. No copy has been found – yet.4
