Email: [email protected] www.southbeltleader.com Vol. 39, No. 47 December 25, 2014 Voice of Community-Minded People since 1976 Precinct 2 delivers toys, joy The ofce of Harris County Precinct 2 Constable Chris Diaz (second from left) once again came through for the annual Leader Christmas drive, donating several boxes of toys that had been purchased using funds donated from local businesses. The project was led by Precinct 2 Lt. Mike Kritzler (right), who solicited the donations. The pair are shown to the left with Diaz’s son Nicho- las dropping the toys off at the Leader ofce. Shown with the ofcers are pro- gram recipients Jennifer Copeland (left) and Alma Alcantar. “Thanks for all you do for the kids and the community,” Alcantar said of their help. Photo by Marie Flickinger This marked the second year in a row the po- lice department participated in the drive. The ofcers said that collecting the toys was their favorite thing to do all year. The PISD Po- lice Department also donated toys to patients at MD Anderson Cancer Center. Local schools participating in this year’s drive included Atkinson, Frazier and Moore elemen- taries, Melillo Middle School, Beverly Hills In- termediate and Dobie High School. Several indi- viduals from the community also donated toys, money and their time to the program. See related photos on Page 6A. Leader Christmas drive a huge success The effort was led by Precinct 2 Lt. Mike Krit- zler, who solicited nancial donations from local businesses, then used the funds to buy gifts. Participating businesses included Scarsdale Eye Care, the Chevron at 10855 Scarsdale, Tom’s Automotive Repair, State Farm agent Thuy Ep- person, the Shell at 10330 Blackhawk, Niday Funeral Home, Pets Place Store and Boarding, South Belt Air Conditioning and Heating, Gib- son Farmers Insurance and Kwik Kar Lube. The Pasadena Independent School District Police Department also played a large role in this year’s drive, collecting two SUVs full of toys. The Leader‘s 32nd annual Christmas pro- gram was a huge success, providing assistance to roughly 70 area families in need. Local police played a larger role in this year’s drive than in previous years. Harris County Precinct 2 Constable Chris Di- az’s ofce was responsible for the largest dona- tion of toys. Detention pond work moving forward Construction of the new South Belt Storm- water Detention Basin is moving forward, with funding for the second and nal phase of design set to go before Harris County Commissioner’s Court Tuesday, Jan. 6. The design of Phase 2 should take around nine to 12 months to complete, according to Curtis Lampley, Precinct 1 coordinator for the Harris County Flood Control District. It is hoped, Lampley said, that the rst phase of construction will be coming to a close as the design of Phase 2 becomes complete, so that the second phase of construction will begin seam- lessly without work being interrupted. The project was originally to be broken down into three phases, but a recent change of design has shortened the duration of construction. Initial construction plans called for work- ing around an existing pipeline using culverts. HCFCD ofcials, however, have since altered the design by simply replacing the existing pipe- line. Lampley said the move will save the district money without losing any detention volume. Lampley said construction of Phase 1 will be complete around this time next year, with Phase 2 beginning immediately after, noting the second phase of construction will take longer to com- plete, as it is a more complicated endeavor. He estimated Phase 2 construction will be complete in late 2017. Lampley further said Phase 1 of the detention pond will be independently operational before Phase 2 is complete. Formerly known as the Mud Gully Storm- water Detention Basin (A520-03-00-E001), the 174-acre site will be located in the area that once housed the South Bend subdivision. Soil sam- pling conducted by both Harris County and the Brio Site Task Force have determined the once- hazardous site is now safe. Once complete, the pond will hold up to 1,250 acre/feet or 407 million gallons of stormwater. While the project is being coordinated by the Harris County Flood Control District, Galveston County ofcials have agreed to contribute up to $10 million to the project, as it will also benet them by detaining water that currently drains to Clear Creek. Other improvements Flood control ofcials are also moving for- ward with a concurrent plan to improve the Mud Gully Channel (A120-00-00-C003) from Sagerock to Astoria Boulevard. Part of the district’s 2015-2016 Capital Im- provement Program, plans call for lining the bot- tom of the channel with concrete with a bottom width of 45 feet. While current plans involve working jointly with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on the en- deavor, ofcials said the county could likely se- cure the necessary funds to go it alone if needed to expedite the project. Filing begins for PISD board election Filing dates for the 2015 Pasadena Indepen- dent School District board of trustees election have been set. The election will be held Saturday, May 9. The rst day to le for a place on the ballot is Wednesday, Jan. 28. The ling deadline is 5 p.m. Feb. 27. Ballot applications must be submitted to the PISD Administration Building, 1515 Cherry- brook Lane, Pasadena, TX 77502, in the Ac- countability and Compliance ofce. Ofce hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. For questions about the election process, call 713-740-0027. No Christmas festival at Sagemont There will be no Christmas festival this year at Sagemont Church. Held the previous two years, the presentation had become somewhat of a staple in the South Belt community. The church opted instead this year to present a concert Nov. 29 by world-renowned Christian singer Sandi Patty. Sagemont also had a snow day for local chil- dren on Sunday, Dec. 21. The church will have three services on Christ- mas Eve, taking place at 2, 4 and 6 p.m. Hanchey funeral plans still pending Funeral plans are still pending for longtime area veterinarian James Hanchey, with family members telling the Leader a service will likely not take place until the new year. Hanchey died Nov. 24 after a battle with ill- ness. Hanchey had operated the Sagemont Animal Hospital for nearly 40 years. Hanchey suffered a stroke in July, leaving him unable to perform his vet duties. Doctor tells how to beat the odds

Five tips for New Year’s resolutions in 2015 For those who will make a promise to improve them-selves this New Year, there’s bad news: They’re 92 per-cent likely to fail in sticking to their resolutions, says a recent study from the Uni-versity of Scranton’s Journal of Clinical Psychology. About 45 percent of Americans make resolu-tions. Ranking at the top is losing weight, and staying fit and healthy ranks No. 5. “Of course, those statis-tics represent the average – one doesn’t have to be aver-age!” says Dr. Virender Sodhi, founder of the Ayurvedic and Naturopathic Medical Clinic, (ayurvedic-science.com), which pro-vides complementary and alternative medicine. “There are plenty of things individuals can do to improve their odds of suc-cess if they resolve to

become healthier and fitter.” Sodhi, author of the new guide, Ayurvedic Herbs: The Comprehensive Resource for Ayurvedic Healing Solutions, (www.ayush.com) believes people can move much closer to a world of disease-free societies by following the laws of Mother Nature. Individual commitment to health via New Year’s resolutions is one path to take them there. Sodhi offers five tips for staying true to goals. • Get away from the instant-gratification mental-ity and avoid unrealistic goals. Don’t expect to go from zero to 60 – 60 being an ideal body image – in just a few months, especially if there is little background in training. Unfortunately, most who have resolutions like losing plenty of weight and quit-

ting smoking are used to easy snack foods and quick rewards. Health is a long-term labor of love; commit to the love and wait for results. • Establish good habits! People make resolutions because they know they’re important, but they’re hard. With each passing week, more people drop their promises for self-improve-ment. Set the right goals; to lose 100 pounds, focus on the first 10, and then the next. Make sure to establish new and good habits – it takes about 28 days to stick. Once the mind is trained with good habits, achieving goals becomes much easier. • What to expect from the “labor of love.” Frequency, intensity and time – these are the three investments needed for los-ing weight or gaining mus-

cle. As a general rule, exer-cise at least 30 minutes three to four times a week. Make sure to start with the appro-priate intensity for one’s health; too little intensity and there will be little if any results, but too much and one will be prone to quit. Don’t think that it’s always better to exercise for a lon-ger duration. What matters is quality. Increase time and intensity once goals are met. • Solidify the gains with persistent positive rein-forcement. Learn to reward oneself in a new way by paying attention to the gains in the body. Notice the improvement in stress lev-els, breathing, energy, sex life, mood and overall strength. While these im- provements are wide-rang-ing and palpable, they increase over time and can be subtle. Don’t let these

improvements occur with-out a personal recognition of accomplishments. • Embrace supplemental support. Of course, all health efforts are connected to overall well-being. When one makes the investment to eat more vegetables, he or she reinforces a commit-ment to exercise. Consider practices such as yoga and meditation, which will feed health kick and provide unexpected benefits. Addi-tionally, supplements such as kelp, green tea extract, Commiphora mukul (Guggul) and Bauhinia variegata (Kachnar) can yield even more health benefits. And spices such as garlic, onion, black pepper, ginger, cinna-mon, long pepper, and cay-enne pepper all have import-ant thermogenic properties, which stimulates metabo-lism.

Remember Whenwater lines in the city of Houston limits was aimed at improving area condi-tions, it caused headaches for many residents who complained about prob-lems ranging from dirty streets to property damage. Multiple Sagemont resi-dents complained to the Leader about construction crews taking months to complete work and leaving the subdivision in a state of disarray. The Dallas Morning News nominated former Dobie High School student Chris Connealy for its Tex-an of the Year, an honor re-served for those who have “had uncommon impact – either positive or negative – over the past year.” He was nominated for his work as Texas fi re marshal. The Clear Brook City Municipal Utility District had contacted the Leader to warn readers of a po-tential scam that involved changing power providers of area residents withouty their knowledge. Residents who had encountered such a scam were urged to con-tact authorities.

The students and their families dressed in pajamas and enjoyed milk and cookies in the cafeteria before visiting the pods for a Christmas activity. Each pod in the school was decorated in a theme to go with a chil-dren’s book.

The Leader would like to thank everyone who made the 32nd Christmas program a huge success. Through the kindness and generosity of those in the community who participated in the drive, the program was able to provide assistance to around 70 area families in need. This year’s program was the largest to date, with signifi cantly more toys and food being donated than in past drives. The largest donations came from local law enforcement agencies, with both the Harris County Precinct 2 Constable’s offi ce and the Pas-adena Independent School District Police Department collecting and donating dozens of toys. Local businesses contributing to the drive included Scarsdale Eye Care, the Chevron at 10855 Scarsdale, Tom’s Automotive Repair, State Farm agent Thuy Epperson, the Shell at 10330 Blackhawk, Niday Funeral Home, Pets Place Store and Boarding, South Belt Air Condition-ing and Heating, Gibson Farmers Insurance and Kwik Kar Lube. Local schools participating in the drive included Atkinson, Frazier and Moore elementaries, Melillo Middle School, Beverly Hills Inter-mediate and Dobie High School. Local Girl Scout Troop 8015 also donated toys to the program. Dozens of individuals from the community selfl essly donated their time and money to ensure the drive was a success. If any local group that participated in the program doesn’t see their photo in this issue or the preceding two issues, send photos and infor-mation to the Leader for future publication.

At right, Dobie place kicker Alexis Saldivar (95) turned a once upon a time team weakness into a strength, coming through again and again for Dobie this season. The senior, now a 3-year starter, was named a fi rst-team, All 22-6A se-lection after converting 35 of 36 extra-point tries and successfully making eight of 13 fi eld goals. On this play, Saldivar is shown nailing a fi eld goal against Alvin, with Tyler Giron (10) as the holder. Below, Quinton Bolling (48), a defensive end for Dobie, also delivered a fi ne career on the fi eld. A two-time 22-6A selection for terrifi c play on the fi eld, Bolling this season was a fi rst-team pick.

John BechtleSports Editor

Dobie’s Keion Patterson (38), shown here making a tackle along with teammate Rolando Rocha (left), was a unanimous fi rst-team selection.

Dobie standouts land 22-6A FB honors

Opposing offenses had to have trouble dealing with Dobie’s magnifi cent combination of Dedrick Simp-son (40) and Chandler Tisby (90). Simpson proved to be one of the most dynamic pass rushers in the

area, and Tisby, the 2013 Newcomer of the Year, built on that success as both he and Simpson were fi rst-team selections in the 22-6A ranks. The best part? Both players return in 2015.

There will undoubtedly be other teams that argue the point, but Dobie very likely possessed the top of-fensive line in District 22-6A. Nathan Flores, (78 in white) and Tony Cantu (shown blocking Memorial’s

Taylor Alfred (68), were unanimous fi rst team selec-tions within the district. Two other Dobie linemen, Xavier Brown and Xavier Rodriguez, were second-team picks.

Perhaps the 2014 varsity football regular season ended much like those of 2011 through 2013, with a disappointing loss to North Shore in the bidistrict playoff round. But make no mistake, this season was far from a bummer as the Longhorns reeled off six consecutive wins to close out the campaign, en-tering the postseason as the third-place team out of 22-6A with a 6-4 overall record. Dobie’s fi rst-team selections, as well as Offensive Most Valuable Player Rashaad Randall, are listed at left. In addition to those fi ne performers, Dobie also had plenty of talent listed on the 22-6A second team. The Longhorns’ second-team representatives included quarterback Joe Gon-zalez, a three-year starter at his position. There were also offensive linemen Xavier Brown and Xavier Rodriguez, both senior standouts. Junior receiver Jaylon Bolden made the second team, as did defensive tackle Dalvin Sterling and defensive tackle Xavier Dotson. Carlos Gonzalez made his way onto the fi rst team as an inside linebacker, and Craig Wilks, an inside linebacker, also made the second team along with cornerback Juwaun Bracey and safety Rolan-do Rocha. Among those, juniors Wilks and Bracey will return and join Simp-son, Tisby and others to give JFD great promise on defense once again.

Ribeiro a 2-time All-American San Jacinto College sophomore Ana Helena Ribeiro has been named to the National Junior Col-lege Athletic Association Division I All-American second team, making it back-to-back years as an

NJCAA standout for the local player. “Ana is a fantastic player and young lady,” said head coach Sharon Nelson, who completed her 13th year at the helm of the San Jacinto Col-

lege volleyball program in 2014. “She has so many attri-butes for a life of success. “She has perfected the art of balancing her aca-demics with her athletic endeavors. Not only has she earned All-American honors two years in a row, but she will also earn aca-demic honors later this spring. “Ana is a valuable as-set to any program. To be recognized twice, na-tionally, for this award, is very well-deserved. We are incredibly proud of her.” Ribeiro, a middle blocker from Portugal, averaged 12.15 kills and 0.72 blocks per set, while hitting .294, this season. She was third on the squad in total blocks with 44. Ribeiro fi nished the year ranked as the second-best student-athlete in the re-gion’s South zone, and she was named to the Region XIV all-conference fi rst team.
