Firstly I would like to offer condolences to Noel Herbst and his family in the

sad passing of Elizabeth. Elizabeth’s obituary in this edition describes a very full life. In addition, condolences to Barry Page’s family and friends. Among other things Barry was a popular barman at the Woongoolba bowls club.

It is great to see a new butcher in town along with the opening of two new cafés. To maintain our Village atmosphere we need to be thinking to shop locally to support a sustainable group of traders. There is also a new management team in the caravan park, Derrin and Tammy Drew. Derrin and Tammy hope to utilise local traders to satisfy their contractual obligations to Gold Coast City Council and are keen to meet with local traders.

As we are approaching the end of the warmer months, a mention of the VMR is more than timely. As the VMR name implies, it is manned by volunteers who have responsibility to look out for all boaties. Recently volunteers had to deal with a recalcitrant owner, who, through incompetence, put both the crew of the vessel and VMR volunteers at risk. I have always found VMR personnel to be dedicated, courteous and helpful and all boaties need to treat them in the same manner. Trust that the event reported in January’s SSN is an isolated incident as the VMR are vital to our safety on the water.

Currently we have a number of projects running in conjunction with the Gold Coast City Council. Whilst Cr Gates has been providing updates, the process to completion of projects is dragging on. I was away for most of this month and came back expecting the new rubbish bins to be installed. At the time of print they were still not installed, to address the issue we are ramping up our project management seeking closer involvement with the relevant Project Manager so that we can follow project steps and expedite against project schedules. For some projects there is signifi cant planning and funding lead time required and these steps would be included as part of a long term project plan.

The Sweet Sea News Editorial Team has seen an increase in interest from prospective advertisers. As a consequence it has been decided to increase the number of colour pages by two. Whilst there is additional printing costs there is signifi cant fi nancial benefi t for the Association by providing additional colour advertising. I also need to acknowledge Geoff Bishop’s recent Sweet Sea News articles and contributions. In particular the Christmas Lights report has lifted the Christmas Lights competition to a new level. I would really encourage everyone to share their stories of any nature with the District. All articles can be submitted to Belinda Beckman at [email protected] . Looking forward to reading your articles.

The next General Meeting will be on Thursday 26th March at the Community Centre, Jacobs Well. With the new sound proofi ng in place I encourage everyone to attend so that you may have your say and therefore infl uence future opportunities for our Community.

So why is there a resistance to buying locally? - Buying habits can be a factor. When the big weekly shop is done it's customary to bring home a loaf of bread or some meat to throw in the freezer. In our house, this builds up until we have a power failure, and then we throw it all out. Wouldn’t it be bett er to buy meat and bread on a daily basis or as we need it. - We need to encourage a change in buying habits.Did you know that prescriptions are the same price in the local pharmacy as in the big ones and you will fi nd that other medications are much the same, sometimes a litt le dearer, sometimes even a litt le cheaper. - Try it sometime. And if we are being price conscious, $15 for a beautiful chef prepared a la carte meal on “Local’s Night” Tuesday at the JWT or a Friday night steak at Harrigan’s, is prett y reasonable I would think. If you want to Bar-B-Q at home, check out the beautiful and great value meat at Restaurant Quality Meats, buy some local fi sh & chips and go and sit by the beach and enjoy or try breakfast at the Castaway. - We have it all, right here

What are the advantages of buying local?1. You keep the local businesses viable, and they will still be here next year.2. You do not have to go as far. Drive or walk down to the village and see what’s here3. You can buy fresh. Fresh is best4. Create More Good Jobs – Local business provide jobs for local residents.5. Invest in the Community – Local business owners live in the community they serve;6. Encourage Local Prosperity – Let’s help our businesses and see our town prosper and att ract people to buy into our town at bett er prices

We don’t necessarily want to change our town too much, but we want to keep what we have.

To make our town and businesses sustainable, THINK LOCAL FIRST.

On February 18, 2015, Federal Member for Forde Bert Van Manen MP hosted a community afternoon tea at Tudor Park PCYC Loganholme. Marcia, Marcia, MarciaWell, have we dodged a bullet or are we now better prepared and better set up?We have had a lot of rain, almost 250 mm for the 21 days of February, but we have not been cut off. In fact no road in the area was cut off. Many of the cane farms have looked like they would be better growing rice, but there was no real fl ooding. Perhaps though we shouldn't get too cocky.

Wild Pizza NightAt the Environmental Education Centre a week ago, seventy-fi ve adults and kids were introduced to a large array of wild native animals that mostly live in the area, except of course for the crocodile. Yes you heard right. Animal expert and past ranger Martin Fingland produced one amazing animal after another and spoke with great authority on all of them.A crowd favourite though was the centres resident python, AgroThe night started with delicious home-made wood-fi red pizza made by Environmental centre staff and volunteers, washed down with a bit of byo wine.Organised by Steve Rowell of the Environmental Centre and supported fi nancially by the Progress Assn, everyone had a great night. Keep an eye out for the next one.

It is hard to believe that we are half way through Term 1 already at Woongoolba SS. The students have settled into their new classes for the year and are busy producing some fantastic work.Early this term we had our PBL (Positive Behaviour for Learning) launch which entailed an afternoon of activities around our three school rules of: Be Safe, Be Respectful and Be a Learner. Each student painted a pet ‘bee’ rock, which will be displayed in our gardens around the school as well as completing another craft activity whether it was peg bees, making bees or some chalk art. This term also sees the induction of our student leaders for 2015. The school captains and student councillors will participate in a young leaders conference later this term where they will have the opportunity of listening to some inspirational speakers. We congratulate all our leaders and are sure that they will do a fabulous job in representing their fellow students this year.

KNOW KNOW YOUR LOCALSYOUR LOCALS

Q1. How long have you lived in the Jacobs Well area?I was born and bred here, left in the 1950’s and came back in 1998 to retire and take care of my Mother. Q2. What attracted you to the area? The history, my heritage and family ties.

Q3. What’s your favourite thing about living here? I love the peaceful feel of the place, and have a love of the water.

Q4. What your most unfavourite thing about living here? Like everybody else, the mozzies. Q5. Any suggestions on ways to improve the area? No, not really, just keep it the way it is. Q6. Do you have a secret/not so secret talent? Painting, knitting, crocheting and doing tapestries.

Q7. Now for a list of personal favourites:

. Holiday destination(s) and why? Anywhere in Australia because of our natural beauty.

. Food? Any sort of Seafood as I was brought up on it. . Music/Artist? I like country, John Denver and Michael Buble . Past-time(s)? I like to keep myself busy all the time, either gardening, visiting friends and helping people as well as painting etc. (see above) . Movie(s)? No favourites - I’m not really into the movies.

Q8. Do you have a pet, and why did you name it? We had a pet galah for 32 years named “Cockie”. Apart from that I have 8 fi sh and various birds – budgies, fi nches, cockatiels etc.

Q9. Is there a quotation you think is worthy of mentioning here?If you speak kind words, , you will hear kind echoes. Q10. A fi nal statement or song which refl ects the essence of you! I am who I am.

Recent events which led to the recall and removal of frozen food products in our supermarkets have highlighted the issues our Australian businesses face when competing with big overseas companies, able to import and sell cheaper and less health regulated products. SIMPLOT, the makers of Birdseye and Edgell products, face the real possibility of closing their Australian processing plants and joining the exodus overseas. The cost to us will be immense not only loss of jobs here in Australia but many farmers would lose their livelihood, we would never know if the product we buy are Australian grown and fresh and we would be vulnerable to suspect food processing and packaging methods. All in pursuit of that litt le bit cheaper item.

The same can be implied to our Local Businesses, they too face the pressures of outside competition and need our support to remain here with us and be sustainable. There is a lot you can do to achieve this .We would urge you all in the community in which we live to frequent and support our local businesses.

So please get behind them all, go and have that pie, get a haircut , go to lunch or dinner, get the kids some fi sh and chips, call in for a coff ee, buy a paper, have a beer .

Elizabeth HerbstElizabeth Herbst1.11.1939 to 19.1.19151.11.1939 to 19.1.1915

At the end of January we lost a remarkable lady. She was born the eldest of 4 children to William and Joan Giles. Her earliest years were at Temora area, on a sheep farm, 40 miles from Wagga Wagga, NSW. The family then moved to Biloela, Queensland, and Elizabeth spent her last part of schooling as a boarder at Meriden Grammar School in Sydney. She was an active member of the swimming club and diving club, gaining many trophies. She was a Girl Guide and became a Patrol Leader.. On leaving school she started Guides at Biloela and was their leader for 8 years. She became actively involved in the community, teaching Sunday - School, treasurer at the local basketball Association, a Member of the Young Anglicans, The Rural Youth, Young Country Party and CWA, organising the Miss Biloela Ball, raising funds for the extension of the CWA Rest Rooms. She herself became Miss Banana Shire and later Miss Show Girl at Beenleigh.

She met Noel at a ball in Biloela, they were engaged in 1964 and moved to Brisbane. They married in February 1966 and moved to the Herbst family home property at “Ayton” where Mt Warren Park is now. Noel was running beef and dairy cattle at this time and Elizabeth learnt to milk. Noel then expanded into sugar cane. They had 2 children, Debbie 1968 and Darrell 1971. Elizabeth then followed the children in their activities, school committees, swimming, pony clubs etc. She was very active in the Beenleigh swimming club and was awarded Life Membership in 1988. She was made Offi cial timer for Queensland Swimming Association. The Mt Warren Park Pony Club was indebted to her work as she was very much into Gymkhanas and club events. With both children involved in Gymnastics she was a Foundation member of the PCYC and helped raise thousands of dollars for the building of a new centre from the old SEQEB Centre (end of Coles Car-park) to the new centre where it is today. As the children grew up she started doing things for herself, becoming a Member of the Beenleigh Garden Club and a steward for both Garden Club and Show Society. She was a Member of the Queensland Floral Art Society since 1982. Her love of fl owers and her creativity led her to be asked to do special arrangements for various top functions, business awards, cane festivals, fl ower festivals, Historical Village, various churches, Lady Mayoress’ Balls (both Logan, Gold Coast and Brisbane), at Red Cross functions at the City Hall and at Government House. Her generosity was exceptional – these were mostly voluntary. Often for 3 or more days at a time her family were emptied out of home so the fl owers could soak in the bath or sinks. They had to keep the old station-wagon so she could cart arrangements around. She loved competition Beenleigh and Brisbane, working on her themed arrangements around unreal things – shells, bark, cans, driftwood etc having hunted them out over the weeks before.

Elizabeth took up china painting in 1992, winning numerous awards for drawings, oil painting, china painting. Her art work was shown in art shows of Rotary and schools. She taught Religious Education for 20 years at schools around Beenleigh,(Beenleigh, Eagleby, Eagleby South, Mt Warren Park and Windaroo), and was a teacher’s aide at Beenleigh and Bethania Schools. Elizabeth fi lled up her days with community care and worked tirelessly. She was a quiet achiever, never boasting of her achievements or criticizing her opponents, always ready to support her family and others. When Noel made another change of life style in 1984, Elizabeth was ready for it. She was prepared to travel with Noel and learn about places she never heard of, learning about a subject she had no knowledge of and worst still didn’t like prawns. When Aquaculture became

a major part of their lives, it was hard going. Cane farms were sold and aquaculture brought in new ideas and friends, Noel still maintaining a very high standard. Now after 29 years and 2 farms, here and at Port Douglas, they are winning awards in Brisbane, Sydney and Australian Shows. Elizabeth went with Noel to Aqua conferences around the world (China, Germany, Japan, France, Fiji, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Solomon Island Islands, New Caledonia, America, Canada, Thailand, Vietnam and Korea). Her other love was people and she loved to entertain, she was able to put on an amazing spread so easily. In the later years she became Noel’s ever ready “pick up”. Pick up this Bets and take it to there. Pick me up at such a time! Elizabeth was always very careful with Noel’s doctors’ appointments Etc. Because of her love of the sea, Noel bought a unit at the Gold Coast which she loved –watching the whales, people on the beach, surf parades and boats. She was always very family orientated, not only their own 2 children, but their grandchildren, brothers and sisters and her mother who will be 100 and is still lively. Rest in peace lovely lady.

You’ll notice training takes up a lot of our time. Our training plans ensure Skippers and Crew keep their skills up to date in all weather and sea conditions. Boaties using our waterways will often see our vessels rafting up together, practicing and training new members in towing techniques. Slow manoeuvring around navigation marks with approaching and leaving pontoons brushes up our skills approaching other vessels for medivacs and breakdowns.

Thanks go to Brisbane Marine and Mercury for assisting with the purchase of our new navy and gold boat crew sunshirts. Envisage Clothing of Underwood have recently become our supplier of uniforms and we look forward to ongoing relationship with supply of practical, quality gear.

Our 2015 Tide Guides are being distributed throughout the district so should be freely available to boaties from shops and businesses. Anyone needing further supplies give us a call and we’ll deliver some more or feel free to call into our base. The Tide Guides are produced and are free to boaties thanks to the generous support from our sponsors, so please give these businesses your support.

People may have noticed a shiny new addition to the VMR jetty, with a new walkway built and fi tted by Pacifi c Pontoon and Pier, a Gold Coast company very experienced in the jetty building business. This construction with a total cost of about $90,000 was partially funded with a grant from Jupiters Casino through their Community Benefi t Fund, with about two thirds of the cost by our fund raising activities such as raffl es.

The old jetty had been condemned, was unsafe, particularly at low tides with the narrow, slippery walkway also making movement of patients on ambulance trolleys diffi cult. Since the walkway was completed, we’ve received many favourable comments from paramedics about the good access.

The seagulls have found a new home though and seem intent on spoiling the shiny surface. So if anyone knows of a non lethal way to keep them away, please let us know. One consolation is the pelicans still seem content with the swim enclosure.

January was a very busy month for our crews, with breakdowns dominating our callouts.

PARVOVIRUSCanine Parvovirus is a highly contagious viral disease that can

produce a life-threatening illness. The virus attacks rapidly dividing cells in a Dog’s body, most severely affecting the

intestinal tract. Parvovirus also attacks the white blood cells, and when young animals are infected, the virus can damage the

heart muscle and cause lifelong cardiac problems. What Are the General Symptoms of Parvovirus?

The general symptoms of parvovirus are lethargy, severe vomiting, loss of appetite and bloody, foul-smelling diarrhea

that can lead to life-threatening dehydration. How Is Parvovirus Transmitted?

Parvovirus is extremely contagious and can be transmitted by any person, animal or object that comes in contact with an

infected dog's feces. Highly resistant, the virus can live in the environment for months, and may survive on inanimate objects

such as food bowls, shoes, clothes, carpet and floors. It is common for an unvaccinated dog to contract parvovirus from the streets, especially in urban areas where there are

many dogs.Which Dogs Are Prone to Parvovirus?

Puppies, adolescent dogs and canines who are not vaccinated are most susceptible to the virus. The canine parvovirus affects most members of the dog family (wolves, coyotes, foxes, etc.).

How Can Parvovirus Be Prevented? You can protect your dog from this potential killer by making

sure he’s up-to-date on all his vaccinations. Parvovirus should be considered a core vaccine for all puppies and adult dogs. It is usually recommended that puppies be vaccinated with combination vaccines that take into account the risk factors

for exposure to various diseases. One common vaccine, called a ‘C5,” protects the puppy from distemper,, hepatitis,

leptospirosis, parvovirus and par influenza.

I am bringing two classes:- Zumba® Fitness - A pulsating one hour Latin dance inspired fi tness party with a contagious blend of Latin and international rhythms that provides a fun and eff ective workout, it's exercise in disguise. This class will be held on Monday evenings at 6.30pm and I will be holding a FREE launch class on Monday 2nd March. Zumba Gold® - Ideal for seniors, beginners to dance exercise, deconditioned participants or anyone wanting a gentler groove, this is a 45 mins Latin dance inspired class which is lower impact, slower paced and easier to follow. I have participants of all ages in this class but mainly seniors and my eldest participants are in their 80s! It is so important to keep the body moving as we get older and they love the fact that they can get out dancing, it keeps them young :) This class will be held on Friday mornings at 9.30 am. I will be holding a FREE launch class for this one on Friday 6th March.

We take pleasure in introducing Chef’s Deck formally the Blue Fin Takeaway in Jacobs Well. Chef’s Deck is a family business with a commitment to customer service and a passion for quality, tasty food.

We are very excited to have opened in one of the most beautiful regions on the northern Gold Coast and we are very much looking forward to becoming a part of the Jacobs Well’s community, by providing a dining or take away food experience.

Glenn Waddell our Chef has been a chef for over 15 years, and has a passion for food. He had his fi rst taste of working in hospitality at age 15 when he worked as a ‘dishy’. This experience gave Glenn the want to be a Chef. After completing his apprenticeship in Brisbane he headed overseas to Malaysia during which time he was fortunate to work with six Thai chefs learning traditional curries, noodles, spicy soups and other Asian dishes. Glenn then travelled to the UK and Europe working in various restaurants including a 480 seat Caribbean themed restaurant and a two Rosette fi ne dining seafood restaurant.

Our menu includes but is not limited to, Fish and Chips, Pizza, Ribs and Burgers plus we offer a range of takeaway meals to suit everyone.

We are currently working on our dine-in menu, in the meantime all our meals are available in our restaurant section. Quality service and selected fresh produce are essential in maintaining a high quality standard, which will always be our priority in presenting the best possible product to our customers. Eat-in or Takeaway, we have seating areas inside and out. Please talk to Glenn or a member of our team in booking a function, party or any special occasion in our comfortable restaurant area ( BYO ).
