Alexa gaining new skills (see above)
Since June 2016 (1.000 skills) to January
2017 (7.000 skills), Alexa gained new
skills at an average growth rate of 32%
per month or rather 96% per quarter
According to CIPR’s research,
customer awareness of ‘Amazon
Echo’ reached 69% at the end of
September 2016, up from 20% in
March 2015
According to Google Trends, the

The Evolution of Interaction
Despite all the hype, VR still has to prove its
mass market appeal, since recent technologies
that required consumers to wear something on
their face (3D, smart glasses, etc.) have not
proven to be mass market successes
According to Deloitte, VR growth manifests the
next step in the evolution of interaction.
Virtual Reality

“VR’s potential is unlikely to be reached imminently; as with all
emerging technologies patience is required”

but new players might raise competitive pressure
8
HTC Vive Oculus Rift
Lenovo VR
Pico Neo
The established players HTC and
Oculus did not show innovations at
this year’s CES, but both are still
benchmarks in usability and sales.
The Pico Neo CV offers a completely untethered VR
headset, not only free from cables and PC’s, but also
consoles and smartphones. It features 6 Degrees of
Freedom (6DoF), two 1.5K at 90Hz VR displays and
built in Hi-Fi speakers.
Lenovo is using the Windows Holographic standard
1440 x 1440 resolution, with OLED making up the
panels. That is an increase in resolution over the
displays in the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive.
Pimax 8k is the world's first VR headset with 8k
resolution, which is 6.4 times higher than the HTC Vive
and Oculus Rift's resolution. It offers a 200-degree
field of view, almost sufficient to cover a person's 220-
degree field of vision.

Consumer Market Trends
At this years CES Virtual Reality is seeing
another step toward being something consumer
can afford and actually use.
Virtual reality was a big focus of this year’s
conference. CES organizers claim that they had
71 VR/Gaming exhibitors at the show this year,
up 48% from last year.
With a lot more content available through
Google Daydream and on YouTube, VR is
expected to break out of the geek realm 2017.

Movie TrailersHTC Viveport StoreSky VR App
Sky has launched a new virtual
reality app, suitably named Sky VR,
which shows 360-degree content
from Sky and its partners. Titles
include Star Wars and clips from
Disney’s The Jungle Book. The free
app will work in conjunction with
Google Cardboard, as well as
Samsung Gear VR and the Oculus
Rift.
Sky wants to be "the home of high-
quality virtual reality (VR) content",
and plans to deliver VR content as
part of Sky News' US election
coverage amongst other events.
HTC wants to make it easier for Vive
owners to find the best virtual
reality apps, so it came up with its
own store “Viveport”: as a
subscription service, which allows
subscribers to use apps, games, and
other content without explicitly
paying for each item. Launch is
planned for Q2.
HTC is also expanding Viveport to
two new audiences: arcades and
traditional businesses.
Fox Innovation Lab teased that
some big movie franchises would be
getting VR tie-ins this year and the
first is an “Alien: Covenant” project
produced by Ridley Scott and Fox
Innovation Lab. The movie is out in
May 2017 but the VR horror can
probably seen shortly before then.
Fox says, "Viewers will discover the
true meaning of terror as they
navigate through horrifying alien
environments and a story where
every decision could mean the
difference between life and death."

SmartTVPersonalized video streaming services change
the way we watch TV; Samsung takes the lead
11
Samsung personalized TV
Samsung introduced three new Smart TV services at CES 2017. The
new services – including ‘Sports’, ‘Music’ and ‘TV Plus’ – will offer
personalized content to consumers based on their TV preferences
through Samsung’s Smart Hub platform.
The ‘Sports’ service will provide sports
fans with information on when their
favorite teams are playing, where they
can watch it as well as scores – all in
one navigation page. Instead of having
to flip through dozens of channels to
find the big game, all details will be
curated by the customized ‘Sports’ user
interface.
Sports Music
The ‘Music’ service will allow Smart TV
customers to easily search and identify songs
on live TV. ‘Music’ will also make
recommendations in the ‘Preview’ section of
Smart Hub’s user interface for customers to
discover new music.
It currently offers content from eight music
app partners including Spotify, iHeartRadio,
Napster, Deezer, Sirius XM, Vevo, Melon and
Bugs: U.S.
TV Plus
‘TV Plus’ will offer IP-based channels
focused on premium content services
through a new Smart Electronic Program
Guide (EPG) solution. Samsung launched
‘TV Plus’ in South East Asia and in the
U.S.. It will be available in Europe in April,
2017.
Samsung will partner with Fandango and
Rakuten to provide premium T-VOD
content in the U.S. and Europe,
respectively, and with Funke for A-VOD
content in Germany.

Streaming Trends
Self-serve tools lower the barrier to publishing
New tools like Direct Publisher from Roku make it faster and easier to
publish streaming channels and improve discovery and monetization.
Live TV streaming
Live and linear programming is increasingly available for streaming
and will continue to grow in 2017. The Super Bowl, Olympics,
Debates, and Election Night all made their streaming debut in 2016.
Live events like these rekindle appointment viewing with
streaming audiences.
Brands will invest more in OTT video advertising. Targeted video ads
offer brands the performance of digital with the beauty of TV.
Ad-supported streaming
More bundled services are expected to emerge in 2017. These services
typically have no contract and offer a wider choice of package options.
Sling TV, PlayStation Vue, DIRECTV NOW, Comcast Xfinity Stream TV,
and Charter Spectrum TV Stream are in the marketplace today, and
more are in the works.

Electric & Connected CarsTrend 1: Self-driving cars everywhere
15
The race to evolve autonomous cars to the
next level changed with several
announcements of automotive OEMs at CES
2017 in Las Vegas.
Technology is not the biggest issue, the main
challenge of getting autonomous cars onto
the road is about changing people’s cultural
perception about cars, the way they operate
and who owns them.
Market Outlook
Audi AI
The goal is to create a Level 4 autonomous
vehicle. Level 4 is the first level at which a
vehicle can be considered "fully autonomous“.
Audi AI shall be the world's most advanced car
on the road by 2020.
Ford
Ford is introducing its next-generation Fusion
Hybrid autonomous development vehicle. It
uses the current Ford autonomous vehicle
platform, but ups the processing power with
new computer hardware.
Toyota Concept-i
The concept car envisions a future where the
driver forms a relationship with its self-driving
car. This shall be possible via communicating
with an integrated artificial intelligence that
predicts and meets the passengers' needs.
