The Timbers took the lead after just 34 seconds. Darlington Nagbe found Diego Valeri on the right flank, and he one-timed a perfectly placed cross to Gaston Fernández. He then chipped it into the air and rounded D.C. goalkeeper Bill Hamid, before chipping it over the line with his back to goal.

United were level in stunning fashion in the 33rd minute when Davy Arnaud teed up a shot from well out on the right which took an initial deflection of Diego Chará before sailing into the top right corner.

The Timbers were back in front just five minutes when a Valeri corner found Mamadou Danso in front of goal, and he coolly one-timed his effort past Hamid.

Danso was again involved as United drew level from a 77th-minute corner kick, Cristian Hernández trying to reach a header that Danso instead nodded inside the left post.

But the Timbers once again responded, hitting for the winner five minutes into stoppage time when substitute Maximiliano Urruti slammed home his own rebound from a Valeri cross from the right flank.

Timbers head coach Caleb Porter made one change to the team that reached a 1-1 draw with the Houston Dynamo at BBVA Compass Stadium. Steve Zakuani came in on the flank in place of Kalif Alhassan.

PORTLAND TIMBERS (4-2-3-1): Donovan Ricketts - Jack Jewsbury (Maximiliano Urruti 83), Pa Modou Kah, Mamadou Danso, Michael Harrington - Diego Chara, Will Johnson - Darlington Nagbe, Diego Valeri, Steve Zakuani (Kalif Alhassan 69) - Gaston Fernandez.

MLS GAME INFORMATION

The win vs. D.C. United ended the eight-game winless streak to start the season. The streak matched the club’s record winless run since coming to MLS, set during the 2012 season.

“Obviously it’s three points, but sometimes it feels like more and I think this is one that feels like more and I think it’ll lift the group. I think they’ll play freer, more confident. I think we’re going to continue to get better and better,” said Timbers head coach Caleb Porter. “We’ve been playing well, but I think sometimes when you feel that weight of a bit more pressure because you’re not getting results and you get frustrated. We showed right until the end, getting the result, that this team believes.”

The Timbers became the first team in MLS history to take the lead in the first minute of play, then score the winning goal in second-half stoppage-time, in the win against D.C. United. On three occasions, a team scoring in the first minute had scored a stoppage-time equalizer.

“I think sometimes, psychologically, when things are going your way, you play not to lose instead of playing to win,” Porter said. “Playing not to lose, usually you lose. We need to keep playing to win, we need to keep being aggressive, we need to keep being a team that’s in the front half, pushing games, proactive, on the ball, attacking.”

For the second time this season, Gaston Fernández scored in back-to-back games, netting the opener after hitting for Portland’s only goal in the draw vs. Houston. Fernández scored the Timbers’ first two goals of the season, in 1-1 draws with Philadelphia and Chicago.

The Fernández goal after 34 seconds was the earliest goal in the Timbers MLS club history and the earliest this season in MLS. It was the 22nd earliest goal in league history.

“He’s very important to us, he scores when he’s in the game and we know that we can count on him. Any player that scores is going to be important for us throughout the season,” said Maximiliano Urruti.

Diego Valeri recorded his first two assists of the season, his fifth career two-assist game (in 40 MLS appearances). Valeri last year led the league with 13 assists.

“Even though [Valeri] didn’t get a goal, he was, for me, the guy carrying us at the end and it was, maybe, the best performance I’ve seen out of him since I’ve had him here,” said Porter. “He’s a big-time player and he brought it. We needed our big-time players, our attacking guys like him to bring it, and he certainly did.”

Steve Zakuani made his second start of the season, his first since March 22, coming into a wide attacking role. Zakuani had made two substitute appearances, totaling four minutes, in the five games in between.

“There’s a bit of [chemistry] that plays into it, but I thought we got it right. A big part of that is that we had some time together,” said Porter. “Zakuani is healthy and I think he’s a piece that helps us. Obviously he’s very dynamic individually. He’ll continue to get better as he gets more fit and in form.”

LA GALAXY The LA Galaxy saw their undefeated streak come to an end after four matches, falling 1-0 to the Colorado Rapids on Saturday evening at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. The Galaxy sit in a tie for sixth place in the Western Conference with 8 points from 6 games. LAST MATCH

The game's lone goal came in the 20th minute. Off a partially cleared corner, Vicente Sanchez chipped a ball from inside the penalty area on the right that appeared to be a pass headed toward defender Drew Moor -- but it lofted over goalkeeper Jaime Penedo and into the top corner of the goal.

The Galaxy had a glorious opportunity just after the hour mark. Moor was deemed to have caught Galaxy striker Rob Friend -- and referee Hilario Grajeda immediately pointed to the penalty spot. But Robbie Keane pushed the ensuing spot kick just wide of goal in the 63rd minute.

Galaxy coach Bruce Arena made one change to the team that reached a 2-2 draw with Vancouver Whitecaps FC at BC Place. Rob Friend came into the side in place of Marcelo Sarvas.

LA GALAXY (4-3-1-2): Jaime Penedo - Dan Gargan, Omar Gonzalez (Kofi Opare 46), Leonardo, A.J. DeLaGarza - Landon Donovan, Juninho, Baggio Husidic - Stefan Ishizaki (Gyasi Zardes 70) - Rob Friend (Samuel 76), Robbie Keane.

TEAM NEWS The Galaxy had their undefeated run put to an end after two wins and two draws, losing their first game since

the season-opening 1-0 loss to Real Salt Lake. “We just blew this game. There’s no excuses for us. We should’ve won this game. Very least get a point,” said

Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena. “We get a chance early in the game, we miss a penalty kick early in the second half, have a lot of possession, we don’t put a shot on goal, I don’t think for the game. I think Ishizaki’s, it was maybe blocked off the line, that was about the only shot on goal. It was terrible execution on our part in the final third of the field.”

The Galaxy were dealt a serious injury blow in the days leading up to the match when Marcelo Sarvas suffered a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee, which will sideline him as long as 2 months.

“Certainly, Marcelo would have been great to have there, but that's not an excuse,” Arena said. “We have enough players that can execute and win games for us.” Said Robbie Keane: “We had possession, but we

Page 5: MLS Game Guide: Portland Timbers vs. LA Galaxy - May 11, 2014

MLS GAME INFORMATION

really didn't do anything, you know? Sometimes you can have possession just for the sake of having it, so there was no penetration. We just looked very kind of lackadaisical.”

With Sarvas out, Landon Donovan shifted from his role partnering Keane as an out-and-out striker to an attacking role on the right side of midfield. “It does change the way we play,” Donovan said. “Marcelo does a lot of dirty work on the team. I filled his spot, but it's a different role.”

Rob Friend made his first start since March 22, coming into the attack alongside Keane. “It was frustrating to see,” Friend said. “We weren't working together, we weren't working as a team, we weren't helping each other out. We just weren't a team out there. We looked sluggish, and we weren't at our best. It was one of the worst games, I think, this season from us.”

Said Keane: “I think that’s probably one of our worst performances certainly for a long time. We looked very sluggish and didn’t look like we could get the ball down and pass.”

There was another injury blow during the Colorado match as U.S. international Omar Gonzalez was forced from the field at halftime. Kofi Opare came on in relief, his first appearance of the league season.

“I feel strongly about the fact this is a short-term issue and he'll be fine. ... There's nothing long-term with his injury, I can promise you that,” Arena said.

Providence Park opened on April 14, 2011, in front of a sold-out crowd in the Timbers first-ever home match as an MLS team. The club proceeded to sell out 51 consecutive regular-season home games in the team’s first three MLS seasons. Last year, the club earned an 11-1-5 overall regular-season home record in 17 games, which was the best home record in MLS. Currently, the Tim-bers have compiled an MLS-club record 19-game unbeaten streak at Providence Park. For the 2014 season, the stadium’s capacity was expanded to 20,814.

Forward Maximiliano Urruti registered the game-winning goal in the final minute of second-half stoppage time, forward Gastón Fernández netted the quickest goal in Portland Timbers MLS history just 34 seconds into the match and defender Futty Danso tallied a goal as the Timbers earned their first win of the season with a 3-2 victory over D.C. United on May 3 at Providence Park. Maintaining nearly 53 percent of the possession, including close to 55 percent in the second half, Portland overcame game-tying goals from D.C. United in each half, recording six shots in the final five minutes plus stoppage time while pushing for the winner. D.C. United’s four shots on goal against Portland tied for the second-fewest shots on goal conceded by the Timbers at home in 2014.

Page 16: MLS Game Guide: Portland Timbers vs. LA Galaxy - May 11, 2014

CATEGORICAL WON-LOST-TIED HEAD COACH CALEB PORTERHead coach Caleb Porter guided the Portland Timbers on a record-setting, turna-round season in 2013, his first season in MLS and as the club’s head coach. He was announced as the Timbers head coach on Aug. 29, 2012, and joined the club ahead of the 2013 MLS campaign. Porter received the Slats Gill Award for Sportsperson of the Year at the Oregon Sports Awards on March 9, 2014, becoming the fourth soccer-related figure to receive the award since it was founded in 1957.

Porter was named the 2013 MLS Coach of the Year after leading Portland to a 14-5-15 (57pts) record, finishing the regular season in first place in the Western Conference and with the third-best record in the league – just two points shy of MLS Supporters’ Shield-winners New York Red Bulls. In 2013, the Timbers set new single-season club marks in points, wins, goals (54), goal differential (+21), shutouts (15) and fewest goals allowed (33).

Under Porter, the Timbers assembled one of the biggest turnaround seasons in MLS history in 2013. In comparison to Portland’s 2012 totals, the Timbers assembled a 23-point improvement in points and an MLS-record 43-goal improvement in goal differential. Portland’s five losses during the 2013 regular season are tied for the fewest in MLS history in a 34-game season. In 2013, the Timbers ranked third in MLS in goals scored and conceded the second-fewest goals at 33, giving the club a league-best, plus-21 goal differential. The club also led the league with 15 shutouts, tied for third-most in a single season in MLS history. During the regular season, the Timbers assembled one of the longest unbeaten streaks in MLS history at 15 games.

The Timbers recorded a 15-game, home unbeaten streak during the 2013 regular season, posting a league-best 11-1-5 home record at Providence Park. The club also set an MLS single-season record with 11 home shutouts. Among Porter’s achievements during the 2013 season, the club’s 57 points accrued are the most earned by a first-year head coach in MLS since the league’s inaugural season in 1996. Porter’s winning percentage (.632) in 2013 ranked among the best in league history for first-year MLS head coaches, and the Timbers’ 15-game unbeaten streak is the longest by an MLS head coach in his first full season at the helm.

Under Porter in 2013, Portland qualified for the MLS Cup Playoffs for the first time since joining the league in 2011. By defeating rival Seattle Sounders FC in the Western Conference Semifinal, the Tim-bers became just the fifth club in MLS history to reach the conference championship in their MLS Cup Playoff debut, and the first since Real Salt Lake in 2008. Additionally, the Timbers made their deepest run in club history in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in 2013 under Porter’s guidance, reaching the semi-finals of the tournament.

Prior to joining the Timbers, Porter was one of the most successful coaches in NCAA history during his tenure as head coach at the University of Akron from 2006-12. He compiled a career mark of 123-18-17 at Akron and owned the highest winning percentage (.832) among all active Division I coaches. Porter garnered numerous honors while at Akron, including 2009 NSCAA National Coach of the Year.

From Kalamazoo, Mich., Porter led the Zips to back-to-back NCAA College Cup appearances in 2009 and 2010, and the school’s first national title in any sport in 2010. In all, he guided Akron to seven Mid-American Conference (MAC) regular-season championships, five MAC tournament titles and five consecutive trips to the NCAA tournament’s Round of 16 (2008-12). Porter set multiple NCAA records while at Akron, including a 48-match, home unbeaten streak (44-0-4) from 2008-11 and a 47-match unbeaten streak (44-0-3) in conference play from 2006-12.

Porter’s coaching career also includes time as the head coach of the U.S. U-23 Men’s National Team during 2012 CONCACAF Olympic qualifying and he spent three years as an assistant coach on the U.S. U-18 National Team from 2009-11. Prior to joining Akron, Porter was an assistant coach for six years (2000-05) at Indiana University.

As a player, Porter was the 27th overall pick by the San Jose Clash in the 1998 MLS College Draft. He spent time with San Jose and the Tampa Bay Mutiny before a knee injury ended his professional playing career in 2000. Porter also played for the U.S. National B Team from 1996-97, winning a bronze medal at the 1997 World University Games.

He had a successful collegiate playing career at Indiana, where he was a three-year captain and a three-time All-Big Ten honoree. Porter led the Hoosiers to four conference titles, and four NCAA tourna-ment appearances. As a senior, Porter captained IU to 23 consecutive wins before losing to eventual national champion UCLA in the national semifinals and was the runner-up for the 1997 Hermann Trophy.

ALL-TIME SERIES NOTES

Unbeaten against the LA Galaxy during the 2013 MLS season, the Timbers play host to their Western Conference foes for the first time this year Sunday. Port-land posted a 2-0-1 record against the Galaxy in 2013 with a scorelessdraw (the Timbers first road point against LA) at the StubHub Center on June 19, 2013, followed by a dramatic, 2-1 stoppage-time win at Providence Park on July 13, 2013, and a 1-0 shutout on Sept. 29, 2013, at Providence Park.

Portland has registered 10 goals in eight all-time matches against the Galaxy since 2011, which ranks fourth for the most goals against a single opponent in the team’s MLS history (the Timbers have recorded 12 goals against Chivas USA, Seattle Sounders FC and Vancouver Whitecaps FC in regular-season play).

The two sides have engaged in several entertaining matches, as the Galaxy earned a 5-3 win at Providence Park during the 2012 season and Portland grabbed a 2-1 win on the latest game-winning goal scored in Timbers MLS his-tory on July 13, 2013.

THE GALAXYForward Maximiliano Urruti scored the game-winning goal early in the second half and the Timbers defense recorded a third straight shutout at home to defeat the LA Galaxy, 1-0, before a sellout crowd under a steady rain at Providence Park on Sept. 29, 2013. Urruti scored in the 52nd minute off a corner kick by Will Johnson to crack the deadlock early in the second half. The Timbers defense held the Galaxy without a shot on goal in the second half to preserve the 1-0 margin and extended the club’s home unbeaten streak to 13 games – the second-longest home unbeaten streak in MLS at that point in the 2013 season. SCOUTING THE GALAXY UPCOMING MILESTONESMidfielder Diego Chara is two full-90 performances shy of tying the Timbers MLS-club record of 1,800 consecutive minutes played (held by Jack Jewsbury). Entering Sunday, Chara has played 1,620 consecutive minutes in the regular season dating back to Aug. 30, 2013.

MAKING HISTORY

According to MLS, Portland became the first team to score a goal inside the first minute, then register the game-winning goal in second-half stoppage time of the same game in a 3-2 win over D.C. United on May 3. Stoppage time was first instituted in MLS for the 2000 season. Forward Gastón Fernandez tallied the opening goal for Portland just 34 seconds into the match, setting the MLS-club record for fastest goal. Substitute forward Maximiliano Urruti then scored the game-winning goal in the 94th minute, helping Portland earn its first win of the season.

THE IRONMANTimbers midfielder/forward Darlington Nagbe has started 57 straight league games for the club dating back to the 2012 MLS season. In his fourth year with the team, Nagbe has appeared in 76 of the team’s 77 regular-season games since the start of the 2012 MLS season. Nagbe became the first Timbers MLS player to reach 100 appearances for the team, hitting the century mark on April 5 against Seattle Sounders FC. Nagbe is the club’s MLS career leader in goals (17) and appearances (104).

The Galaxy enter Sunday’s match following a 1-0 loss against Colorado on May 3 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colo. After conceding the go-ahead goal in the 20th minute, Galaxy forward Robbie Keane missed a potential game-tying penalty kick in the second half as head coach Bruce Arena’s side was unable to score the equalizer. The 2011 and 2012 MLS Cup champion-Galaxy have played just six regular-season matches this season while also competing in the quarterfinal knockout round of the 2013-14 CONCACAF Champions League, falling 4-3 on aggregate to Mexican side Club Tijuana. The Galaxy have faced Real Salt Lake and Vancouver twice already in 2014, earning a 1-1-2 combined record against the Western Conference clubs. Keane leads the team with four goals in six appearances while Swedish midfielder Stefan Ishizaki has tallied two goals and two assists.

GAME PREVIEW: The LA Galaxy (2-2-2, 8 points) will remain on the road for a third consecutive week as the Galaxy travel to take on the Portland Timbers (1-3-5, 8 points) at Providence Park on Sunday, May 11 at 11:30 a.m. PT live nationally on NBC Sports Network. Following a disappointing 1-0 defeat to the Colorado Rapids on the weekend, the Galaxy will look to bounce back against another Western Conference opponent. The Galaxy has only won once against the Timbers, a 5-3 victory July 14, 2012, while playing in the Beaver State. All-time, the Galaxy are 4-3-1 against the Timbers, but Bruce Arena’s side has lost the two meetings in the Pacific Northwest. With the all-time MLS goals mark a single goal away, Galaxy forward Landon Donovan will continue his pursuit of goal 135. Donovan has four goals and three assists against the Timbers in seven appearances dating back to 2011. LAST GAME BEFORE WORLD CUP CAMP: Sunday’s fixture marks the last Galaxy match before the United States Men’s National Team will convene in Stanford, Calif. for its World Cup camp on Wednesday, May 14. Last year, both Donovan and Gonzalez helped the U.S. qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, which will be held in Brazil this summer. Gonzalez appeared in and started eight of the 10 games that the U.S. played in the final round of CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying while Donovan appeared in three qualifiers, scoring once. Donovan has 155 caps, and is only nine shy of Cobi Jones’ record of 164 appearances for the U.S. National Team. Already the U.S. record holder for goals and assists with 57 goals and 57 assists in his international career, Donovan had eight goals and eight assists in 10 appearances for his country last year, leading the U.S. to the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup championship. Gonzalez, who was also a part of the U.S. squad at last year’s Gold Cup, collected 14 caps in 2013 and has a total of 16 for his international career. ONE GOAL AWAY FROM HISTORY: Donovan continues his pursuit of the league’s all-time regular season goal scoring mark as the Galaxy face the Whitecaps FC on Saturday at BC Place. Donovan tied Jeff Cunningham’s mark of 134 regular season goals with two impressive finishes in LA’s 5-0 victory over Chivas USA last September. Cunningham, who needed 360 games to score his 134 goals compared to just 301 matches for Donovan, has held the record alone since August 27, 2011 when he scored the final goal of his MLS career away to Seattle, passing Jaime Moreno in the process. Of Donovan’s 134 regular season goals, 32 were scored for the Earthquakes while 102 have come as a member of the Galaxy. DONOVAN CLOSES IN ON ASSIST MARKS: While Donovan is one goal from becoming Major League Soccer’s all-time leader in goals, he is also closing in on a pair of assist records after collecting two assists against Chivas USA on Sunday, April 6. Donovan now has 119 regular season assists in MLS and 90 as a member of the Galaxy. He is second to just Cobi Jones (91 assists) for the most assists in club history and now 16 assists behind Steve Ralston for the most in MLS history.

LA-TIMBERS CONNECTION: LA Galaxy President Chris Klein and Portland Timbers Head Coach Caleb Porter were once teammates and co-captains at Indiana University. Both Klein and Porter each played in the semifinals and finals in 1994 for Indiana, and were selected in the MLS draft on January 31, 1998, joining several Hoosiers in the professional ranks. Klein, a native of St. Louis, was selected by the Kansas City Wizards as the fourth overall selection of the draft. The first team All-Big Ten midfielder was third on the Hoosiers in scoring with 32 points (11 goals and 10 assists). Klein registered 34 shots in 1782 minutes and started all 24 of the Hoosiers' matches. Porter, the runner-up for the 1998 Hermann Trophy Player of the Year Award, was selected by the San Jose Clash as the third pick in the third round. The Richland, Michigan native helped lead the Hoosiers to a 23-1-0 record and the school's 11th Final Four berth. Porter played in 22 games, scoring two goals in 1832 minutes. THE IMPORTANCE OF SCORING FIRST: The Galaxy fell behind early in the first half of their last game, going on to lose 1-0 away to Colorado Rapids. They are now 0-2-1 in league games that they concede the first goal compared to 2-0-1 when they score first. LA has yet to win a regular season game that they trailed on. CONSTANT PERFORMERS: Four Galaxy players have appeared in all five MLS regular season games with Robbie Keane, Landon Donovan, Juninho, and Omar Gonzalez starting each. Keane and Donovan are the only field players to play every minute (540) in the 2014 MLS campaign. While Bruce Arena and the Galaxy have made at least one change to their lineup for all six MLS games that they have played this year, they have used just 18 different players in those contests. Of the 24 players that are currently on the Galaxy roster, after loaning six players to the LA Galaxy II, 20 have appeared in at least one regular season game and 17 have started at least one of those. ONE MORE WITH THE WEST: Saturday’s game will be LA’s seventh straight league game against Western Conference opposition. In the first six games of this streak, the Galaxy are 2-2-2 with 8 points of a possible 18. The Galaxy are 1-1-2 on the road against the West and are coming off a 1-0 loss to the Colorado Rapids. The game against Portland will mark the last encounter in the seven-game streak against Western opposition, as the team will then travel to Texas to face the Houston Dynamo at BBVA Compass Stadium. GONZALEZ INJURED: LA Galaxy center back Omar Gonzalez was removed at halftime from the LA Galaxy's 1-0 defeat to the Colorado Rapids due to precautionary measures after suffering a left knee injury in the first half. Bruce Arena told reporters this week that he feels strongly that the left knee issue will be short-term and not cost him a chance to suit up for the U.S. at the 2014 FIFA World Cup. This season, Gonzalez has tallied 495 minutes after being pulled at half time in the game against Colorado, and has appeared in all of Galaxy’s MLS regular season games in 2014.

FRIEND FINED: LA Galaxy forward Rob Friend was fined an undisclosed amount by the MLS Displincary Committee for embellishment in the 61st minute of LA's 1-0 defeat to the Colorado Rapids on Saturday. In the 61st minute, Friend was fouled by Colorado center back Drew Moor in the penalty area which caused referee Hilario Grajeda to point to the spot and award a penalty kick that was fired wide right by LA captain Robbie Keane. The penalty was the second that Friend had earned this season after Friend was ruled to have been fouled in the 18-yard box during the closing moments of an eventual 1-0 loss to Real Salt Lake. ROGERS MAKING HIS WAY BACK TO THE FIRST TEAM: During the second half of LA Galaxy II’s 2-1 victory over the Charlotte Eagles on Monday, Los Dos head coach Curt Onalfo slotted midfielder Robbie Rogers into the left back position. The move comes amid injuries to James Riley (six months due to left knee surgery), Todd Dunivant (abdominal strain), and Omar Gonzalez (left knee injury). The position was not entirely unfamiliar to the 26-year-old, but his last match at left back took place on Aug. 13, 2008 during the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, when an early red card forced Rogers to slide into the left side of

defense for the Americans’ 2-1 loss to Nigeria. Rogers is slowly making his way back to the first team after being hampered with a stress reaction in his left ankle since January that occurred due to overuse ahead of preseason preparations. In 2013, Rogers made 11 appearances for the Galaxy, staring in seven of those games, and logging 602 minutes with one assist. NEXT UP: The LA Galaxy will face Houston Dynamo at BBVA Compass Stadium on Saturday, May 17 at 5:30 p.m. Following their match against Houston, the Galaxy will then return home to face FC Dallas at StubHub Center on Wednesday, May 21 at 7:30 p.m. PT. LA GALAXY II IN ACTION ON SATURDAY: The Galaxy II return to action on Saturday when they travel to Ohio to take on the Dayton Dutch Lions in the first of a brief two game road trip in USL PRO play. They will return home on May 14th when they host Cal FC in the U.S. Open Cup at the StubHub Center Track and Field Stadium. Galaxy II extended their unbeaten run to four games with a 2-1 victory over the Charlotte Eagles on Monday night as goal from Charlie Rugg and Chandler Hoffman moved Los Dos back into a tie for first place in USL PRO with defending champions Orlando City SC
