MATCH PREVIEWReal Salt Lake returns to the field for the first time in a week when it welcomes Vancouver Whitecaps FC to Rio Tinto Sta-dium on Saturday, September 19. Kickoff in Sandy is set for 7:30 p.m. MT and will be broadcast live locally on KMYU and the KSL TV app and ESPN700 radio.

RSL returns to the pitch after suffering its worst home loss in club history at the hands of Colorado last Saturday, falling 5-0. The loss marked the first home loss of the 2020 season for RSL.

Saturday will be the 23rd all-time meeting between RSL and the Whitecaps with the all-time series knotted at 9-9-4 (31 points) going to each side since the Canadian side entered the league in 2011.

In the last meeting between the sides, RSL saw a 1-0 vic-tory on Decision Day in 2019 behind a first half goal from Damir Kreilach. The win solidified third place in the Western Conference and its first win in Vancouver. Whitecaps FC is coming off the back of a 3-1 victory over the Montreal Impact on Wednesday in Vancouver to end the Canadian phase of Major League Soccer’s continuation of play.

LAST TIME VS OPPONENTDamir Kreilach’s 28th-minute header was enough for Real Salt Lake to finish the MLS regular season with a 1-0 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps on Decision Day presented by AT&T.

RSL secured third place in the Western Conference and a home playoff game with the win. They will host the sixth-place Port-land Timbers in the first round later this month.

Real Salt Lake (16-13-5) were close to adding to their lead in the 32nd minute with several attempts on net from close range in the same possession, but the Whitecaps cleared the ball away.

Real Salt Lake began the day in fifth place and facing a road game in the first round, but Decision Day results broke their way.

Nick Rimando, in his final MLS regular season game before he retires, finished with five saves and a clean sheet, including tip-ping away a Michaell Chirinos header in the 55th minute and just getting his fingertips on what looked like a certain Chirinos goal in the 69th minute, forcing the ball off the far post.

Vancouver finished the season 8-16-10 despite going undefeat-ed with two wins over their previous three matches.

LAST MATCH RECAPReal Salt Lake (3-3-5, 14 points) fell 5-0 to rival Colorado Rapids on Saturday night, surrendering the Rocky Mountain Cup for the first time since 2015.

Colorado began the match with a flying start, scoring two goals inside 10 minutes, both of which came from Diego Rubio. The first came in the third minute when his header snuck into the net before his long-range effort in the 10th minute found the bottom-right corner of the net. RSL sought its way back into the match, generating several chances that didn’t result in goals in the first half, forcing it to settle for a 2-0 scoreline at the break.

Colorado added a third goal shortly after the halftime break when Sam Vines slammed home his first MLS goal in the 49th minute inside the RSL penalty area. The Rapids found a fourth goal of the night through second-half substitute Braian Galvan who curled home inside the penalty area in the 55th minute.

Things went from bad to worse for RSL in the 64th minute when Douglas Martinez was shown a red card after video review. From there, RSL struggled to keep possession and create any clear chances at goal and in the 87thminute, RSL conceded a fifth goal to Cole Bassett in the 87th minute as the match ended 5-0 in favor of the visitors.

GENERAL MANAGER ELLIOT FALLFall has served in different capacities at Real Salt Lake since 2007. During the 2013-2014 seasons, he worked closely with former General Manager Garth Lagerwey as Director of Soccer Operations. In November of 2014, Fall was named Assistant General Manager and has held that position for five seasons. In each of those roles, he assisted in player acquisition and retention as well as in player development, over-seeing the Real Monarchs and the RSL Academy at different stages. A graduate of the University of Utah and Salt Lake City’s Judge Memorial Catholic High School, Fall is a lifelong Salt Lake City resident. At 34 years old, he is the youngest General Manager in Major League Soccer.

HEAD COACH FREDDY JUAREZJuarez, 41, originally joined the Real Salt Lake organization as RSL Academy Head Coach in 2010, winning the USSDA U-16 Championship in 2012 with a roster that boasted future RSL players Justen Glad, Brooks Lennon and Sebastian Saucedo, among others. He remained with the Academy until being promoted to Head Coach of Real Monarchs SLC in the club’s inaugural season in the USL in 2015. After two seasons in that post, he was again promoted to Real Salt Lake’s coaching staff as an assistant coach, where he has played an integral role in continued youth development at the MLS level and in implementing tactical approaches that have helped RSL improve in the standings in each of his three years on staff. In August, he took the helm as Interim Head Coach, with RSL going 5-4-1 in the final 10 matches in that role after posting a 2-0-1 record in his three matches as acting head coach prior to being named in the interim role. A native of Las Cruces, New Mexico, Juarez played 10 seasons in the USL for the El Paso Patriots and Minnesota Thunder before retiring in 2007. Throughout his playing career, he coached at the youth levels and continued in that capacity upon his retirement.

HOMEGROWN LEADERSReal Salt Lake has led Major League Soccer in minutes played by Academy products in each of the last two seasons and reached the Western Conference Semifinals in both seasons, totlaing 23,100 minutes played. With Real Monarchs reaching the USL Championship Final in 2019 and the USL Regular Season Shield in 2017, RSL’s youth development structure has shown an ability to develop young players coming through the RSL Academy as well as those joining from other organizations.

MATCH STORYLINESMOMENTUM GROWING: Winners of two of their last three outings, Whitecaps FC enter the next phase of the continuation of play with momentum on their side. The 'Caps are coming off a 2W-1L-0D homestand and a strong team victory against a Montreal Impact team that was playing to vie for the 2020 Canadian Championship. In each of the three matches, the 'Caps scored the opening goal and found the net at least twice. 10 different 'Caps scored or assisted during the stretch with contributions coming from each part of the pitch. More info on page 4.

BACKS ARE PACKED: The 'Caps head out on the road, kicking off a three-game trip with a visit to Real Salt Lake. The third of five matches in 15 days, Whitecaps FC will once again have to tap on their depth. They welcome Lucas Cavallini back to the fold after a one-match absence, and Janio Bikel looked steady on Wednesday in his first game since March 7. Ali Adnan and Leonard Owusu are expected to have fresh legs for the weekend after playing limited minutes off the bench midweek versus Montreal.

AT THE RIOT: Both sides enter the match at Rio Tinto Stadium coming off emotional games versus their respective rival clubs involving skirmishes and physical play. RSL have been up-and-down as of late, with a 3-0 win over LAFC sandwiched in between a 4-0 defeat to MNUFC and most recently a 5-0 derby loss to Colorado. Striker Corey Baird is their feature man up top with two goals and four assists in the season. At centre back for the 'Caps, Derek Cornelius has quietly put together a solid year and has started the last five games. Versatile midfielder/forward Damir Kreilach, who paces RSL with five goals, has been lining up as a box-to-box midfielder lately.
