THE NEW NCGR BOARD MET IN MARCH and, despite the fact that the weatheroutside was chilly (especially for those used to warmer climates), the

camaraderie among the Board was warm and harmonious. The group is quitediverse, which adds to its ability to serve NCGR.

There was a full agenda with many complicated issues to attack. At this writing,I am still not sure of the exact course we are going to take, but it has become clear(from the IRS) that NCGR needs to change its structure in order for us to continueour certification and PEP programs. Exactly how we will implement thesechanges will likely be determined by UAC and I would urge all those attendingthe conference to be sure to come to the NCGR membership meeting on Mondaymorning, May 19 at 8:00 AM. It’s likely that we will have two organizations: atrade association (non-profit 501c6) as well as our existing non-profit, charitable501c3 organization.

I also have to report that the Board voted to increase our dues beginning with thenew fiscal year on July 1, 2008. It was not something that we relished doing, especially in this economy. However, the numbers generated by our new super-duper accounting system showed us that we are currently spending about $36per member each year and that is without the $15 that we give to chapters asrebates for members who have a chapter affiliation. Therefore, we are losing $6for every member that belongs to a chapter. Our Treasurer assured us that wecannot continue doing this for very long and, with prices for paper, postage, andoperating expenses continuing to climb, we were left with no other option.

Here are the new membership rates: Individual, US: $55; Individual, Canada/Mexico: $60; Individual, International: $65; Add $20 for couples. We will beoffering a three year membership option that will save you $5 per year. And, ofcourse, we will continue to offer a Life Membership option as well, though thoserates are being increased by $200 for each type of membership. But, if you join, renew, or choose to purchase a life membership before July 1, you will savemoney by taking advantage of the current dues rate structure.

On a more positive note, I am excited about the fact that Media Director MarkKuenzel reported that our tape digitization project is just about complete. And,I’m excited about the plans that Research Director Chris Brennan has for asearchable database of NCGR Journals. Eventually, we’ll expand this project toinclude other organizations, making this database a real boon to the seriousastrological researcher. Publications Director Tad Mann is working on somebeautiful designs that we’ll use for t-shirts and possibly some other products tosell at UAC and in our online store. I’ve seen some of his ideas and I know thatyou are going to want one of these shirts that help to carry the NCGR message.

Happy Spring … please come and say hello to me and the rest of the NCGRBoard if you are at UAC.

Using Technology to Grow Your Astrological Practice. The home computersof the early 1980s were a boon to professional astrologers by both allowing them tosave time in calculating their charts and experimenting with new techniques andcalculations. Now, the tools of 21st century technology are just as significant for theprofessional who wants to reach a broader market. This workshop starts with teachingyou how to record your consultations but also includes how to teach a class online, anoverview and best practices for graphics handling and designing a web page, producingyour own podcasts, and using screen movies in your consultations, and much more.Presented by Mark Kuenzel, NCGR’s Media and Communications Director. Fee: $30.

The Dark Side of Venus: The Eclipse ofAugust 11, 1999 and the Sacrificial Venus

by Alex Walker

Midpoints in Astrological Research by Manda Selva

MIDPOINTS HAVE BEEN STUDIED formany centuries in calculatingArabic parts, although Uranian

astrologers Alfred Witte, Ludwig Rudolph,Hermann Lefeldt, and CosmobiologistReinhold Ebertin take the credit in bring-ing forth the symmetry and harmonics thatare involved in understanding midpoints. In his book The Key to Uranian Astrol-ogy, Uranian astrologer Hans Niggemannsays: Books can only point the way.Experience alone, which means plenty ofpractice, gives the true interpretations(Hans Niggemann, The Key to UranianAstrology, New York, NY: Self-Published,1976, p. iv).

One way of practice is through under-standing midpoints in chart interpretationby observing repeating patterns. A morescientific method, however, is throughfinding statistical significance of specific

midpoints through astrological research.Using concepts in Uranian astrology andCosmobiology, as seen in the writings ofWitte and Ebertin respectively, and myown observations (which are not cited),the following are some of the planetarypictures that can be used with lotterywinning: Jupiter/Uranus = Aries Point: suddenluck, Lottery (Alfred Witte and HansLefeldt, Rules for Planetary Pictures,Hamburg: Witte-Verlag, 1959, p. 210); in apublic manner. Jupiter/Uranus=Meridian: sudden luck(Witte and Lefeldt, p. 210); causingchange of status. Sun/Jupiter = Uranus: pleasant sur-prises (Witte and Lefeldt, p. 69); expec-tation of good fortune (Reinhold Ebertin,Combination of Stellar Influences, Tempe,AZ: American Federation of Astrologers,1972, p.79).

(Midpoint formulas are written asfollows so that Jupiter/Uranus, meansthe midpoint of Jupiter and Uranus-Ed.)

All these planetary pictures could be ap-propriate for lottery winning, but unlessthese are tested through research or seenrepeatedly in a chart, it is hard to concludewhich of them applies in real life situations. For instance, the finding from the studyon Jupiter-Uranus archetypes in lotterywinners that I presented at the NCGRResearch Symposium in March 2007 inBaltimore indicated that although Jupiter-Uranus archetypes in terms of aspects ormidpoints appeared to be significant inthe charts of lottery winners, there wasno such significance seen in Venus-Uranus aspects. This not only throwslight on Jupiter being the planet signify-ing big money but that Venus, althoughthe 2nd archetype, may not signify

IN MY RESEARCH SPECIFIC to nations andtimelines, I pay attention to where theeclipses physically take place as to

their maximum effect. For instance, eclip-ses exert a physical effect on FoucaultPendulums, the large, timekeeping globeshinged at the ceilings in places like GriffithObservatory in Los Angeles. According tothe NASA website, a Foucault Pendulumunder the path of an eclipse will changedirection by as much as 13.5 degrees(http://science.nasa.gov/newhome/headlines/ast06aug99_1.htm).

If a solar eclipse shadow can move aphysical mass, consider how it mustaffect us. The August 11, 1999 solareclipse physically began just offshorefrom New York City at a longitudeapproximating that of Portland, Maine. The eclipse path (like a fuse) traversed

with an orbit in proportion to ours as theGolden Ratio.

I concur with the Mayans, who werepracticed in sacrifice, and saw Venus inthis light. This becomes all too evidentwhen viewing the direct effect that theAugust 11, 1999 eclipse and Venus’ tran-sits had on the September 11, 2001 WorldTrade Center Attack in New York City.

The NASA eclipse website shows adiagram of the eclipse including its great-est magnitude in Romania at 45N04 and24E17 (http://sunearth.gsfc.nasa.gov/eclipse/SEplot/SEplot1951/SE1999Aug11T.GIF). According to theNASA website, the path of the eclipsebegins in the Atlantic Ocean, at 41N02and 65W05 (http://eclipse.gsfc. nasa.gov/SEpath/SEpath1951/SE1999Aug11T

the Atlantic, through Spain, the MiddleEast, and terminated on the eastern shoreof India. Like many others, I also believethis eclipse is what Nostradamus referredto when he said: In the year 1999 in the7th month…the “Great Terror” will comefrom the sky…Given a 500-year lead time, achange in calendar systems and the stateof astrology in the 1500s, I can forgive hisapproximate 12-41 day error!

Although Nostradamus called ourattention to this eclipse, it is also notablesince it formed a fixed t-square and had atotal view throughout England, Europe,Middle East, Turkey, and India. More so,this particular eclipse made me see Venusin a new context, especially when ittransits the same place in the zodiac asthis eclipse. After all, our neighboringplanet is almost identical in size to ours,

money in the way we usually think—interms of quantity—but may point to thevalue we attach to money shown in howwe keep it, use it, etc. (NCGR ResearchSymposium booklet is available atwww.geocosmic.org-Ed.)

Furthermore, research showed that asignificant number of lottery winners hadthe planetary picture Jupiter/Uranus=Midheaven in the natal chart and thatsignificance was not seen in Jupiter/Uranus=Aries Point or even in Jupiter/Uranus=Ascendant, although both areconsidered appropriate planetary picturesin attracting sudden luck. This provokesus to question the interpretation of theterm public exposure when involved withan Aries Point v. Midheaven. It is not to saythat results from a single research study canbe used to conclude anything, but generallyspeaking it can be used to clarify thesignifications of a natal point or body.

This also throws light on the methodol-ogy of analyzing natal aspects of mid-points to fast moving points in the chart

for the purpose of gaining additionalinformation on existing potential in anindividual chart. If a particular midpointappears to be significant for a particularevent then it could mean that a particularplanetary picture in a natal chart has morepotential to attract the event, or that it hasthe potential to get triggered during cer-tain transits or progressions to create theevent. So either we may observe a plan-etary picture like Jupiter/Uranus=Mid-heaven significantly more often in lotterywinners than the general population, orwe may find that significantly more lotterywinners have their Jupiter/Uranus mid-point triggered on the day of the winning.

MethodologyStudies in midpoints can be done in manydifferent ways but a practical way ofconducting the research would be asfollows: • Choose an event like lottery winningor a motor accident where the timing erroris minimal. When incidents such asweddings are used it is important toremember that the person is conscious of

the incident prior to the actual date andhence the energy associated with theevent may have already been triggered. • Identify midpoints that may be relatedto the event either through traditional orUranian methods. • Collect data from a reputable sourcelike Astrodatabank. • Create a control group about 10 timesthat of the test group usually donethrough using astrological software. • Identify the occurrence of a planetarypicture in the natal charts of both the testand control group • Statistical test to see if the differencebetween the test and control group issignificant.

If the study is being conducted on a groupof similar events like school shootings byanalyzing charts drawn on the day or exacttime that the event occurred, then insteadof using a control group, the findings canbe compared to the normal expected occur-rence of a specific planetary picturewithin a specific time-frame (an example

path.html.) These coordinates are eerilyclose to the longitude of Portland ME(70W15), the origin of Mohammed Atta’sflight to Boston MA, where he boardedthe ill-fated American Airlines flight thatcrashed into the World Trade Center, andthe latitude of New York City (40N42),where the attack took place.

Solar Maps software plots the completepath of this total eclipse, which occurredon August 11, 1999, and reached its maxi-mum at 7:03 AM EDT at 18° Leo 21’ (roun-ded off to the next minute). (The actualnew moon takes place at 7:08 AM EDT.)If we view the map of the Solar Eclipsedrawn for the above time for New York City,we see the Venus-Ascendant line passing132 miles east of Portland (70W15), and 179miles east of Boston (71W03).

If you draw a standard locality chart ofthe eclipse for any of these cities (includ-ing Washington D.C., where the Pentagonwas hit), Venus, located at 2° Virgo 09’ R,conjoins the ascendant.

The solar eclipse is classified as SarosCycle 145. Venus went direct on Septem-

ber 11, 1999 at 18° Leo 48’, only 27 minutesfrom the eclipse point, making this degreeeven more important. While it marked thesolar day, it may not have been closeenough to energize the eclipse point of 18°Leo 21’ on that day, as it turned forward inthe zodiac. On July 27, 2000, Venus directpassed through the eclipse point 18° Leo21’, and may have begun to pull thebowstring. There may have been a keyevent for this date in the timeline withregard to Osama Bin Laden or the 19hijackers, or a key decision in their plans.

Venus finally released the energy when itexactly transited the eclipse point 18° Leo21’ on September 11, 2001 at 7:45 AM EDT,the exact moment Mohammed Attaboarded American Airlines Flight 11 inBoston. This assured the execution oftheir plan, their self-sacrifice by suicide, and the sacrificing of the plane and itspassengers. The precision of this event—the point of no return, theme of sacrifice, and the Venus aspect is what I findintriguing. At the moment the planecrashed into the World Trade Center at8:46:26 AM EDT, Venus was placed at 18°Leo 24’.

Using the August 11, 1999 eclipse set forNew York City as an event chart, we seethat Mars at 29° Sagittarius will enter thePlacidus 5th house (the targets: pride, speculation—financial) on September 8,2001. On August 10, 2001 (solar return ofthe eclipse), Mars was positioned at 18°Sagittarius 19’, exactly trine the August11, 1999 eclipse point (free flow ofenergy), and once again linking theevents of September 11, 2001 with theAugust 11, 1999 eclipse. By September 11,2001, Venus was appropriately in the 12thhouse of the eclipse event chart.

Even more interesting is the astro-mapfor the Pentagon attack, which took placeon September 11, 2001, 9:40 AM EDT,Wshington D.C. The Mars-IC line runsthrough Denver, CO. According to http://cryptome.org/gsa020108.htm, Denver isthe location of an unannounced virtualduplication of all Washington D.C.government offices and services in theevent D.C. is lost to a nuclear attack.Denver International Airport is alsoknown for tunnels and substructures outof sight and public access. I’ve noted inmy own travels through Denver’s

is given below in using midpoints inmundane astrology).

Methodology Applied toAccidental DeathsApplying the above-described method toindividuals who have met accidental deathdue to impact, the following lists someof the midpoints that may be associatedwith such an event: Mars/Uranus=Ascendant: suddeninjury (Witte and Lefeldt, p.190); affectingone’s personality or body. Mars/Uranus=Sun: sudden injury affect-ing one’s body (Witte and Lefeldt, p.190). Sun/Uranus=Mars: injury to the body(Witte and Lefeldt, p.190); hasty physicalaction (Ebertin, p. 83).

All 79 test subjects who had died in anaccident involving an impact by car, plane,or explosion were used as test subjectsfrom the Astrodatabank database. A con-trol group approximately 10 times that ofthe test group was created. In comparingthe occurrence of the planetary picturesgiven above and many others, betweenthe test and control groups, the followingresults as seen in Table 1 were observed.

When the data wastested using the t-test,the results for theplanetary picture, Mars/Uranus= Sun wassignificant and hencenot just a chanceoccurrence. Based onthe findings, one canquestion as to why theprobability of the Sunbeing involved in theplanetary pictureassociated with anaccident could besignificantly more ascompared to theascendant, althoughboth are sometimesinterchangeably usedin astrology to conveythe idea of physicalbody. Does it meanthat the Sun more thanany other point in thebody is the solesignification of aperson’s body, thephysical energy in thenatal chart, while theascendant is more ofthe personalityprojected by theindividual who is not allphysical?

Apart from lending ascientific angle toastrology, the thought-provoking questionsthat give clarity to thedifferent natal bodies

Table 4 (see p. 20) gives the list of schoolshootings that was used for the study. The goal of the research was to find out ifappropriate planetary pictures that ex-pressed the sudden violence and-or expo-sure of the violence to the public can beseen at the time of the sooting. The plan-etary pictures at the time of the event alsodefine the image that is projected by thelocation of the event. This is more so inschool shootings, where the event ismore than often referred to by the name of

natal bodies and points are the mainreasons for midpoint research. Also, if thesame pattern is repeatedly seen in otherstudies involving sudden violence, thenwe can conclude that there is a significantcorrelation between the Mars/Uranusmidpoint and sudden violence.

Midpoints in Mundane EventsMidpoints research can also be used inmundane astrology with a group ofsimilar events. Its significance can be seenwhen applied to events such as schoolshootings, which have become painfullyfamiliar news in recent years. Althoughresearch on the web provided a list ofschool shootings both in the United

airport, the tunnel in which the train takesyou from one area to another has severaldoors on the opposite side from where thetrain car doors normally open for airlinepassengers, that don’t make sense withregard to use for evacuation. Overall, itseems that Denver, CO may be our backupnational capital should Washington D.C.be sacrificed and the unthinkable happen.

In the September 11, 2001 World Trade Cen-ter attack astro-map, there is no Venus linethrough the United States, but the Venus-Descendant line traverses Saudi Arabia,Iran, and Russia. Other lines include: Nep-tune-Ascendant through Saudi Arabia, Iran,Iraq, and Russia; Uranus-Ascendant linethrough Saudi Arabia, Iran, Afghanistan, and Russia; and Pluto-Midheaven throughRussia, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, perhapstraversing the regions in Pakistan and Af-ghanistan where Osama Bin Laden has beenhiding. The Pluto line is especially revealingsince Pakistan has captured, and been ahaven for, Al-Qaeda leaders, and Afghani-stan, the training ground for Al-Qaeda, hasmade NATO countries useful in the region.

the city like Columbine School Shooting,or an important symbol of the city likeVirginia Tech School Shooting.

To make sure that the events being selec-ted had an impact on the public, onlythose events where two people or morewere shot and killed or injured were inclu-ded in the study. The natal chart drawn atthe time of shooting was checked for theplanetary picture Mars/Uranus=Ascend-ant and Mars/Uranus=Midheaven, sinceAscendant and Midheaven are some of thefast-moving points in the time period of aday and can define the sudden violence(Mars/Uranus) projected through the imageof the location (Ascendant), and the iden-tity and status of the location (Midheaven). All 45° aspects were considered. Similarly, the significance of the Vernal Point/Marsmidpoint was analyzed as it can characterizeviolence that is exposed to the public in abig way. Since the time of the event was

based on eyewitness accounts, an error of3° plus or minus was used.

Table 2 shows that the planetary pictureMars/Uranus=Ascendant was found in31% or nearly 1/3 of the event charts ana-lyzed at the time of the shooting. This issignificant when compared to the normalexpected occurrence of this planetary pic-ture in a 24-hour period, which is 13%(when a time frame of 3° plus or minus isused, and all the eight 45° aspects are con-sidered as in many Uranian techniques). Thefrequency of occurrence of the planetarypicture Mars/Uranus=Ascendant was 140%more than that normally expected in a 24-hour period. Although planetary picturesinvolving Vernal Point/Mars were not signi-ficant, it is interesting to note that the plan-etary picture, Vernal Point/Mars=Ascen-dant showed up in four of the schoolshootings that were one of the deadliestor gained exposure for other reasons, like

Columbine (15 killed and 4th deadliest)and Virginia Tech (33 killed and deadliestU.S. school shooting), Centennial Secon-dary School Killings (first school shootingin Canada, 3 killed and 13 injured), andDunblane Massacre (17 killed and deadli-est school shooting in United Kingdom).

There have been other studies done onschool shootings that appear to show theimportant role Mars plays, like significantincidence of Mars retrograde, and Mars andSun aspects like conjunction and oppositionobserved in the event charts (ValerieVaughan, “Classroom Avengers: TheAstrology of School Shootings,” www.stariq.com/Main/Articles/P0002265.htm,March 9, 2001). The findings from midpointresearch can be combined with other studiesto create astro-signatures for specific eventslike school shootings. All in all midpointstudies are relatively easy.

SIGN OF THE TIGER cont’d from p. 1

531 incidents involving captive exoticattacks have been reported in the newssince 1990, and 151 big cat incidents wererecorded outside the United States. Theirwebsite contains a partial listing of theseincidents with dates, 449 to date. Becausethere is no official reporting agency, theactual number is probably higher. Accord-ing to the website, despite the recentpublicity, the overall number of reports in2007 show a decline in U. S. incidentscompared to the rest of the world, due tothe fact that the government is clampingdown on the exotic pet trade.

According to The Book of Rulerships,Islamic astrologer Al-Biruni associatedwild animals and injuries with Mars, andtame or captive animals with Jupiter (J.Lee Lehman, Ph.D., The Book ofRulerships: Keywords from ClassicalAstrology, West Chester PA: SchifferPublishing, 1992, p. 275, 286).. In Brihat

Parasara Hora Sastra, Vedic astrologerSage Parasara associates the 6th housewith animals and injury (Sage Parasara,Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra, Vol. 2, tr. byGirish Chand Sharma, New Delhi: SagarPublications, 2003, Ch. 99, sl. 6-11). Sirius, the Dog Star, at 12° Cancer 59’ sidereally, hasa traditional association with animal attacks, especially by dogs, when the Moon con-joins it (Cornell, H.L., Encyclopedia of Medi-cal Astrology, 3rd Edition, New York: Wei-ser, 1972, p. 781). In Vedic astrology, theMoon’s mansion or Nakshatra associatedwith Sirius is Pushya, which is located be-tween sidereal 3° Cancer 20’-16° Cancer 40’.

San Francisco Zoo AttackAccording to various news reports, thetiger attack at the San Francisco Zoooccurred on December 25, 2007 (seeCharts 1 and 2). Initial reports mentionedan attack shortly before 5:00 PM. but ininterviews with the victims, it seems that

What is Vedic AstrologyJyotish (Sanskrit for “Science of Light”), also known as Vedic, orHindu, Astrology, is based on the sidereal zodiac. The difference be-tween the sidereal and tropical zodiacs lies in the ayanamsa, thedifference in degrees and minutes between 0° Aries and the point atwhich the equinox actually occurs. To arrive at the Vedic siderealpositions, subtract the ayanamsa fo the year you were born from thetropical positions. There are several different ayanamsas used in In-dia, but the one employed here is Lahiri, which at present is 23° 58’.Vedic astrology uses a whole sign house system whereby each houseis comprised of an entire sign beginning with the ascendant (lagna). In Charts 1 and 2 (same chart), sidereal Gemini is the ascendant, which means thte first house consists of the entire sign of Gemini(and any planets in that sign, which in this case is Mars), the secondhouse consists of Cancer, the third sign consists of Leo, etc.

To read the North Indian-style chart (Chart 1 top), follow the signs-houses by starting with the ascendant (top central box) and proceed-ing counterclockwise. The houses are always in the same positions, but the signs contained therein vary depending on the rising sign. Toread the South Indian-style chart (Chart 2 bottom), where the signs arealways in the same postiions, go clockwise from Aries, the second sign-house from the upper left. The ascendant is marked by placing a diagonalthrough it. Charts are calculated with Lahiri Ayanamsa and Mean nodes.

Traditional rulerships are used, so that Mars rules Scorpio, Jupiter rulesPisces, and Saturn rules Aquarius. Aspects are based on the whole housesystem. Mars at 2° Gemini and Jupiter at 19° Sagittarius are consideredto be in full aspect (not opposition), since they are seven signs-housesapart. In addition to conjunctions and full aspects, Jupiter aspectsplanets and houses five and nine signs ahead, Mars aspects planetsand houses four and eight houses away, and Saturn aspects planetsand houses three and 10 houses away.

time elapsed before officials were awarethat a tiger was actually out of its cage. Therefore, the chart is drawn for 4:30 PM.The victims were reported to have tauntedthe tiger before it jumped out of its cage, and the postmortem of the young manwho was killed found alcohol in his blood.Later investigation revealed that the enc-losure was two feet shorter than the reco-mmended height of 14 feet. (This informa-tion was culled from www.foxnews.com,and www.cbc.ca/world/story/2008/01/02/tiger-attack.html by Associated Press.)

An attack at sunset is no surprise, as thatis when cats are awake and hungry. In thischart, Mars is only 3° above the easternhorizon in Gemini, opposite Jupiter with anorb of only one degree. Jupiter is in itsown sign of Sagittarius, while Mars isdisposited by Mercury, which is conjunctSun and Jupiter in the 7th house. Marsand Jupiter are strengthened by being in

Memberletter seeks Articles aboutthe U.S. Election. Throughout 2004,

the late Mary Downing wrote a series ofarticles in memberletter about the 2004 U.S.presidential election, which were quiteunique. Never predicting a winner, she fo-cused on the political climate as the issuewent to press, utilitzing horoscopes of theUnited States, presidential and vice-presi-dential candidates, and their spouses. When those candidates, including thoserunning in the primary, did not have a birthtime, calculations were based on aspects inthe chart that were not dependent on times.Charts were also done for the inauguration, election, and when candidates declaredtheir presidency. Hopefully, as the yearprogresses, we will have more precise birthinformation for all our candidates.

If you wish to submit an article about theupcoming election please query me [email protected], adhering tothe deadlines on p. 8. In the October-No-vember issue, we will ask several astrolo-gers who use a variety of techniques to pre-dict the winner, and to explain, using theirrespective systems, how they came to thatconclusion. If you wish to contribute to thatissue, which will consist of short pieces, please let me know.

Please continue to routinely checkwww.astrodatabank.com for all updatedinformation about the candidates’ birthdata. I look forward to hearing from you inthe next few weeks and months. Ronnie Gale Dreyer memberletter Editor

components of success are crucial inreaching goals, but are not readily definedor delineated in standard astrology. Thusthe term success can be elusive in horo-scope analysis.

One cannot find success in one’s chartwithout knowing how to harness thefundamental concepts of success withinhimself or herself. Success means therealization of goals. Once we reach thatgoal, the end-product of the goal needs tobe placed into the world at large. In short, the skill and goods of the success need tobe moved outside the sphere of the indivi-dual who created them and into the mar-ketplace for public presentation, or fromlow visibility to high visibility. The keyword here is move. Products requiretransportation to reach the market just asa job applicant needs a form of transporta-tion to reach the interview. They have tomove their goods.

Society conditions us to devise a plan, re-work and refine it, establish a goal, andput the result out in the public eye. Onceyou do, you’ll have what is known as a

career. Sounds easy, right? Maybe. Butmaybe not. Aside from the Saturnianqualities of ambition and discipline, whatfactors in a horoscope facilitates themoving of one’s goods from low visibilityto high visibility?

Principal PlanetWhile the midheaven, its ruler, andplacement describe the basic characteris-tics of a prospective career, it does not tellthe whole story of professional success. Ajourney of career training worthy of itseffort is required to reach the peak of ourpublic presentation, namely, the mid-heaven. And it is represented as follows:

Planets that aspect the Midheavendescribe the equipment needed toclimb the mountain to our highestdestination. Aspects to the Midheavendescribe the journey” (Jackie Slevin,Finding Success in the Horoscope,Lake Worth FL: Ibis Press, 2008, p. 7).

The planet that most closely aspects themidheaven is the planet I refer to as theprincipal planet. The characteristics ofthis planet represent the list of details

required in one’s arsenal of equipment toreach one’s personal summit and, as aresult, have a huge impact on the mid-heaven. For example, an individual couldhave the sign Sagittarius on the mid-heaven, indicating a tendency to seek acareer in advertising, education, travel, industry, religion, or law.

If, however, the principal planet is Venus, the constant companions en route to thesummit of achievement may includeartists, performers, musical instruments, beauty consultants of all kinds, mediators, and diplomats. This Venusian influencewill add another layer to their Sagittariancareer influence, suggesting a blend of thetwo planetary and sign attributes, includ-ing a lawyer who represents artists, amusic teacher, a beauty consultant to aforeign clientele, an international per-former, or someone who studies artabroad. Someone with a Leo midheavenseeks administrative authority, creativity, and a venue for performing or display. Ifthe principal planet is Mercury, talent incommunication or writing buoys him orher up to the Leo summit. If the aspectbetween the principal planet and the

What about the future and does the Aug-ust 11 eclipse still have an effect? This de-pends on how long the effects of an ec-lipse last, which elicits different opinionsamong astrologers. Some say six monthsand some say five years. This eclipse wasin a fixed fire sign and may last who-knows-how-long. What may be the activefactor can be seen in the following pattern.

Since the August 11, 1999 eclipse, Venustransited the eclipse point of 18° Leo 21’on the following dates: September 11,1999, July 27, 2000, September 9, 2001,June 30, 2002, August 13, 2003, September23, 2004, July 13, 2005, August 27, 2006,June 26, 2006, August 30, 2007 R, Septem-ber 18, 2007. Since every eight years,Venus will transit the same degree onapproximately the same date, Venus willagain visit 18° Leo 21’ July 27, 2008 andthen on September 11, 2009, a repeat of the2000-2001 transits.

The August 11, 1999 eclipse seems like theigniter for the oxymoronic term Modern

Religious Wars. Its sister, the next Saros-145 eclipse is on August 21, 2017, is what Irefer to as The All American Eclipse. Itspath goes from Alaska’s Aleutian Islandsand east of Hawaii, then comes ashorejust south of Portland, Oregon and div-ides the country all the way through Char-leston, South Carolina and terminates off-shore in the Atlantic. This one concernsme for numerous reasons. The other note-worthy eclipse through Charleston in-volved the U.S. Civil War in 1865 and thetransits of that eclipse point backward intime coinciding with not only Fort Sumter(Charleston) but the major battles andLincoln’s assassination. Here are someother interesting correlations with theevents connected to the August 11, 1999eclipse, the World Trade Center attack, and Venus.

According to Dr. Nicholas Campion in theBook of World Horoscopes, the beginningof the Moslem era is dated from Sunset,July 16, 622, the traditional date ofMohammed’s arrival in Medina. (Nicho-las Campion, Book of World Horoscopes,

Revised 3rd Edition, Bournemouth:Wessex Astrologer, 2004, p. 485). In thatchart (which could also be called thefounding of Islam), constructed for July16, 622 at 6:45 PM (Sunset) in Medina (inwhat is now Saudi Arabia), the Vertex of1° Virgo 18’ is closely conjunct Venus at 2°Virgo 9’ in the August 11, 1999 eclipsechart. Arabs were premier astrologers, andwhy wouldn’t Bin Laden ascribe to hisancestor’s practice, especially when Allahhimself was once the god of the Moon, transcending the polytheistic crowd ofArab gods via Mohammed the Prophet tobecome their one and only God?

Although we can never know for surewhen Mohammed was born, many believethat he was born April 20, 571 in Mecca(www.amaana. org prophet/milad.htm),when Jupiter and Saturn were in Scorpio. If that date is, in fact, accurate, Marswould be posited at 3° Cancer 10’ exactlyconjunct the North Node at 3° Cancer 10’on September 11, 2001. I wonder if BinLaden accepts that as the official birthdate of Mohammed!

midheaven is a square, the route to thesummit is an arduous, upward climb, butsurmounting the obstacles builds charac-ter. Trines illustrate a painless ascent, almost like being airlifted to the top.Sextiles indicate signposts and helpinghands and are ever present along theroute. Principal planets conjunct themidheaven provide an advantageous headstart that facilitates less climbing, and

principal planets opposing themidheaven cause formidabledelays and detours that breedfrustration and conflict. Slowlyand steadily, people who havethese oppositions reach thesummit with patience, skill, and fortitude.

As with any aspect, the impactto the midheaven lies inproportion to the orb so thatthe smaller the orb, thestronger the influence. Let’stake a look at how principalplanets work in practice.

Carole KingAmerican singer and song-

writer Carole King has been a fixture inpopular culture for over 40 years. By age19 she and her husband Gerry Goffin hadpenned three number one hit singles WillYou Love Me Tomorrow, The Loco-motion,and Take Good Care of My Baby. Her 1971solo album Tapestry remained on thecharts for six years, sold over 10 millioncopies worldwide, won four Grammyawards, and is listed as one of the greatest

albums of all time. Crossing the genres ofrock, jazz and pop, her music is now partof the American Songbook and is heard insupermarkets, elevators, and televisioncommercials.

Such an outstanding career would leadone to think that King’s midheaven, itsruler, and her 10th house would be focalpoints in her chart. Cancer, the sign of thepublic and natural rhythm, is the sign onKing’s midheaven. The Moon, ruler ofCancer, is placed in 11° Sagittarius in her2nd house exactly opposing Jupiter inGemini with a small, 21’ orb. Thus, King ispredisposed to utilize the sign Cancer andits characteristics to reach her personalsummit of success. The Moon also sex-tiles Venus in her 4th house and trinesPluto in her 10th house. These are all verypositive aspects for career success andfor a happy family life, but do not neces-sarily imply superstar status. A closer lookreveals that Neptune, sextiling the mid-heaven with a tight 26 minute orb, isKing’s principal planet, or what she usesto move her goods to reach her personalsummit of success. The U.S. Marines were re-established forthe purpose of opposing the BarbaryPirates (Islamic) back in the early 1800s(“…to the shores of Tripoli…”). In theSeptember 11, 2001 chart, Venus is 18° Leo24’, closely conjunct Venus at 19° Leo 47’in the chart of the first key engagementwith the Barbary Pirates on July 14, 1804,Tripoli, Libya. These Venuses also conjointhe natal North Node at 20° Leo 9’ in thechart for the first founding of the Marineson November 10, 1775, and the Marineslost that first battle.

Comparing the founding chart of Islamwith the natal chart for George W. Bush isalso very interesting. Bush’s Venus at 21°Leo 29’ (also conjunct the above Venuses)conjoins Islam’s Mercury at 20° Leo 16’,his Saturn at 26° Cancer 30’ conjoinsIslam’s Sun at 25° Cancer 26’, his Mercuryat 9° Leo 49’ and ascendant at 7° Leo 6’conjoin Islam’s North Node at 6° Leo 18’.

Maybe the Mayans were onto somethingafter all, and Venus, which they repre-sented as war, sacrifice, and death, veers

dramatically from the cushy, luxury-lovingParis Hilton-type Venus I thought I wasfamiliar with. Perhaps we should thinkabout Venus representing the Islamreligion, given the strong indicator fromthe August 11, 1999 eclipse and Venustransits.

Venus in LeoOf 44 major historic events I chose to lookat that involved wars or major historicpoints of nations, movements, andsocieties, I noted that Venus in Leo wasnumerically higher than the other signs bya factor of four. These events are alsointeresting by nature to involve what Ithink is best put into the word sacrifice.

To give some idea of proportion, 16 eventshave Venus in Leo and of the other signsthat Venus occupies, Aries, Taurus andGemini have four each, Cancer, Capricorn,Aquarius and Pisces three each, two forVirgo, one for Libra and Scorpio and nonefor Sagittarius. Of course this is a work inprogress, but it still appears that Venus inLeo may be dominant in these types of

events. What you may also note are thesolar months when you consider thatcrops are grown and harvested duringthose months is a form of sacrifice withthe culmination of half of these events inSeptember, the month of the AutumnEquinox. The following are events thatoccurred while Venus was in tropical Leo.

• September 4, 476: The Fall of Rome:Venus at 27° Leo.

• July 16, 622: The founding of Islam(Islam translated is to submit): Venus at15° Leo.

• June 8, 632: Death of Mohammed, founder of Islam: Venus at 2° Leo.

• August 13, 1521: Montezuma (king of acivil-ization built upon sacrificing others)sur-renders to Cortez (believed to be theirret-urning Quetzalcoatl): Venus at 14° Leoretrograde.

angular, or kendra, houses. The Moon islocated at 6° Cancer, in the nakshatra ofPushya, the home of the star Sirius. OnDecember 24, the Moon was full in Gemini, and an occultation of Mars by the Moonoccurred. This represents a very powerfulversion of Chandra Mangala Yoga, theconjunction of Mars and Moon, whichtraditionally represents acquisition of wealthand desires. For a tiger, the desire to huntand kill live meat might be overwhelming!

Roy Horn Tiger AttackAs reported by CNN (www.cnn.com/entertainment), illusionist and animal han-dler Roy Horn, half of the Siegfried andRoy team of entertainers, was attackedonstage in a Las Vegas casino by a whiteSiberian tiger on October 3, 2003, shortlybefore 8:30 PM (see Charts 3 and 4).

According to one source, Horn hadtapped the tiger lightly on the nose with aflashlight when it was not obeying com-mands. The tiger grabbed Horn by theneck and dragged him offstage. Horn sur-vived, but with brain damage from mas-sive blood loss and a brain infection.

Mars and Jupiter are also in oppositeaspect here. They do not share mutuallordship, but they are in kendra houses,Jupiter in Leo in the 4th and Mars inAquarius in the 10th. The ascendant isjust entering Taurus in the nakshatra ofKrittika, often associated with injury.Ketu, the South Node, is in the 6th houseof injury as measured from the ascendant,in the Nakshatra of Vishakha, associatedwith the male tiger. Mars is in the 6thhouse from the Sun, and the malefic Sat-urn is in the 6th house from the Moon.

British Columbia Tiger AttackA 27 year old woman, the fiancé of theowner of a private zoo, was fatally mauledin front of her two young daughters aftershe bent down to pet one of the tigers, something she did routinely every evening. The zoo had been subject to warnings bythe Humane Society that the facility was adanger to the public. In this chart (see Charts 5 and 6), Jupitermakes a trine (1/5) aspect to Mars. Fur-thermore, they are in mutual reception, orParivartara Yoga, with Jupiter in Scorpio(ruled by Mars) and Mars in Pisces (ruledby Jupiter). The ascendant is 26° Libra 10’,in the nakshatra Vishakha, the sign of the

male tiger. Again the attack was exactly atsunset, and Jupiter is in the 2nd house. InVedic astrology the 2nd and 7th housesare maraka, or death-bringing, houses, often involved when death occurs. Marsin the 6th is lord of both planets in themaraka houses.

Seven other incidents described on theBig Cat Rescue website were examinedastrologically, only one of which had averifiable time of day. In six of thesecharts, an aspect existed between Marsand Jupiter. Out of the total of ten charts, the Mars-Jupiter opposition occurred infour, and was angular in three of the fourwith verified time. A relationship betweenthe sign rulers of Mars and Jupiter existedin six of the seven charts.

Three of the Navamsha (9th harmonic)charts had Mars-Jupiter aspects. Only twohad an association between Mars andJupiter, and Sun, Moon, Rahu (North Node)and Ketu (South Node). In the chart with anaccurate time, Mars and Jupiter were inKendra houses, 4th and 10th respectively. The position of planets in nakshatrastraditionally associated with tigers, Chitraand Vishakha, appeared random. However,

the Moon appeared in Pushya, associatedwith Sirius, in three of the 10 total charts, and Saturn appeared in two.

In conclusion, the traditional associationof animal attacks by caged tigers with theplanets Mars and Jupiter, and the fixedstar Sirius in the constellation Pushya, appears reasonable based on this smallstudy of 10 charts. The potential exists toanalyze at least 450 charts, a number largeenough to present opportunity for statis-tical analysis. If the risk of large animalattacks is indeed higher when Mars andJupiter are in opposition and angular, thenanother spike in the number of attacksshould occur in March and April, 2008,when the two planets again reach opposi-tion. Anecdotally, the author is aware ofreports of an increase of dog attacks onhumans and of violent crime in the monthsof December 2007 and January 2008.

As this article goes to press on February21, I’ll ask the readers to check the newsreports and reach their own conclusions.

signifying idealism, utopia, and merging withthe collective, it is no wonder King’s exqui-site and soulful melodies are commonplacebackground music, pulling heartstringsaround the globe. Manyplanets aspect King’s midheavenbut the one with the smallest orbis Pluto, trining the midheavenwithin 1° 44’ minutes, determin-ing it as his principal planet.King’s prolific literary output isreplete with dark, Plutonianthemes, with characters includ-ing, but not limited to, were-wolves, vampires, psychopaths, and a high school girl namedCarrie who uses her telekineticpower to seek revenge.

In order of exactness, the conjunction ofNeptune and Mercury follows Pluto withan opposition to the Midheaven. Nep-tune’s orb is 2° 27’, and Mercury’s orb is2° 31’, placing both planets, within a merefour minute orb, in an exact tie, to help moveKing’s goods to his Midheaven, or peak ofachievement. Neptune is the ruler of fantasy,

and only Stephen King could invent the titlecharacter of Buick 8 who serves as a conduitto another dimension, or an eponymouscharacter of a mysterious mist that stalksand consumes stranded shoppers. Theinfluence of Mercury’s tight orb to King’smidheaven is incontrovertible; King is

a one-time English teacher who wroteshort stories for magazines and parlayedhis obsession with horror and fantasy intothe career of a blockbuster author with aglobal following. Similar to the links of achain, Pluto, Mercury, and Neptune joinforces as they aspect each other and, strengthening their already potent angularplacements, project their attributes toKing’s Midheaven. It is incredible to notethat these three planets all aspect Saturn, giving King the iron discipline to keep tohis schedule of writing 2000 words a day, turning out short stories, novels, columns, and screenplays at a continuous rate.

Powerfully placed Neptune, along withJupiter, co-rules King’s 9th house of pub-lishing. Jupiter is in a mixed mutual recep-tion with Mars, ruler of King’s midheaven.

Mars in Cancer receives Jupiter in exalt-ation, and Jupiter in Scorpio receivesMars in its own sign. (Mars is the tradi-tional ruler of Scorpio). Mars is in fall inCancer and is behind the scenes in the12th house of hidden enemies, self-undoing, and secrets. Traditionallyspeaking, Mars is not prominently placedin King’s chart, but a closer look at theaspects to his midheaven tells a differentstory. The fact that the conjunction ofMercury and Neptune are in opposition tothe midheaven illustrates King’s methodi-cal and steady pace to reach the top. When asked how he writes he replied oneword at a time (www.brainyquote. com/quotes/authors/s/stephen_king. html).

The sign on the midheaven tells only thebeginning of the story of our journey to

reach our peak of achievement. Planets inaspect to the midheaven tell the rest of it.

Using these principal planets, one canestablish career goals, itemize the neces-sary equipment to reach the top, anddetermine whether the journey to thesummit will be as easy as a chairlift or aHerculean effort. The secrets to successlie not in how planets aspect each other, but in how they aspect the midheaven.

See it for yourself. Take out your charts, determine your principal planet or planets, and learn how to move your goods toreach your personal peak of achievement. And once you arrive at your summit, gazeat the celestial phenomenon above youand thank your lucky stars—and yourprincipal planets.

Charts are drawn for Geocentric,Tropical, Placidus Houses, and TrueNodes.

Book ReviewsPerson-to-Person Astrology: EnergyFactors in Love, Sex & Compatibility, byStephen Arroyo, Frog, Ltd., Berkeley, CA,www.northatlanticbooks.com, 2007. Paper.403 pp. $18.95 US/ $24.95 CAN.

THIS BOOK OFFERS a contemporary lookat the invisible energy fields that exist

between people. Tapping into his numerousyears of experience as an astrologer andtherapist, from which he extracts qualitativeresearch material, Stephen Arroyo makes hispoint that astrology is experiential, particularly in the human energy field.

Readers new to Arroyo’s material will finda clear portrayal of psychologicalastrology. Fans of Arroyo who may havebeen waiting for another book will not bedisappointed. This volume builds on hisprevious work in the area of elements, transformational astrology, and life cycles, and offers a refresher on this material. With a contents page that covers apreface, an author’s note, guidelines fornewcomers, and an introduction, beforegetting the promised material, I wouldhave preferred a different organization tothe first part of the volume. I wanted tojump into the subject at hand, rather thanwade through the heavy reiterativebuilding of a case for why astrologyshould be considered in a legitimate light.

Despite the somewhat didactic tone, anddespite his humble sentiment that no oneknows it all when it comes to relation-ships, Arroyo clearly is a relationshipexpert. He understands the sought-afterarena of romance, the longed-for intimacy, emotional sharing, and sexual expression, and he understands that there are sub-stantial hurdles to overcome in the 21stcentury, for both men and women. Arroyothe realist understands chemistry and thatwhere relationships are concerned, trade-offs are often necessary to sustain them, and with some people, no amount of workwill make a difference. He makes it clearthat he presents his material on the basisof research; I was disappointed that in thelengthy appendix, Arroyo did notduplicate the sample questionnaire fromwhich he acquired the data.

Arroyo is obviously well-read on thesubject of relationships. He begins eachchapter with an inspiring quote that urges

the reader to pause and consider themultidimensional and universal quality tothe relationship quest. Additionally, heprovides tools to make comparisonsbetween Sun-Moon, Ascendant, Mercury,Venus-Mars, and Jupiter-Saturn contactsbetween people, and does so in the con-text of his overall assessment: that astro-logy shows experience, patterns, and flow ofenergy in fields of experience and throughcertain dynamics. That he does this simplyand clearly is a benefit to all astrologers.

This is an accessible work that willincrease your understanding of relationalpresence, both personally and in the livesof clients who seek your perspective.

Soul-Sick Nation: An Astrologer’s View ofAmerica, by Jessica Murray, AuthorHouse,1663 Liberty Drive, Suite 200,Bloomington, IN, 47403, www.authorhouse.com, 2006. Paper. 220 pp., $15.95.

THIS BOOK OFFERS A PERSPECTIVE of thetimes we are living in. The emphasis is

on the United States and Pluto in Sagit-tarius. Murray uses the Sibly chart for theU.S. and interprets it in depth, focusing onthe greater purpose or soul-purpose of theU.S. collective, how this purpose has beendistorted, and the tests to be faced andlessons to be learned from recent events, and recent and upcoming transits.

The socio-political commentary—on theoil wars, religious terrorism, the WorldTrade Center attacks and more—is sharpand incisive without being strident. Theastrology is well-done and insightful—and often has more than a touch of wryhumor. For example, in discussing theMars-Neptune square in the Sibly chart,Murray says Uncle Sam may denigrateemotional wisdom...Perhaps this is Nep-tune’s revenge on the patriarchy: If youdo not acknowledge Feminine Knowing,I will make the biggest and toughestamong you weep at baseball games(when the national anthem is played).

How’s that for evocative? And the rest ofthe book is equally evocative and quotable.

Contrasts and synthe-sizes traditional and esoteric astrology.Innovative, well-written, and nicelyillustrated. Basic. Becoming Conscious, by Helen Adams,Trafford Publishing, 6E-2333 Govern-ment St., Victoria, BC, V3T 4P4, Canada,

While Murray discusses the ironies of therecent transits and their impact on theU.S., this book is by no means bleak orfatalistic. In fact, Murray discusses waysto come to terms with the times and res-pond to the responsibility inherent in thetimes as a prize rather than a curse. Thebook was designed to be read by bothastrologers and non-astrologers, so whilenatal symbolism and transits are dis-cussed, jargon is kept to a minimum Fornon-astrologers, a very thorough appen-dix of astrological principles is included. This is in itself a pretty good crash coursein astrology for anyone new to the study.

An excellent bibliography lists not onlyastrology books but books on psycho-logical, spiritual, and global conscious-ness. There is no index. I would definitelyrank Soul-Sick Nation as one of the mostreadable books I encountered in 2007. It’swell worth looking at, and if this book isany indication, this is an author to watch. reviewed by Donna Van Toen

Personal Panchanga and the Five Sourcesof Light, by Komilla Sutton, The WessexAstrologer Ltd., P.O. Box 2751,Bournemouth BH5 2AZ England,www.wessexastrologer.com, 2007. Paper,208 pp. £15.95, $30.00 US.

ANYONE WHO HAS READ any of the vari-ous classical Vedic astrology texts

knows that a great many of the techniquesmentioned never make their way into chartinterpretation practices. The sheer numberof techniques mitigates against inclusion ofthem all and some may be a bit redundant.

This well-written book analyzes the Pan-changa, a core astrological method inVedic astrology, and how to utilize it innatal chart analysis. Typically, this compo-nent of Vedic astrology is reserved for an-alysis of muhurtha, or electional charts.Sutton makes the case for the applicationof these techniques quite well, though Imust admit, I am not totally convinced thatthis technique is essential for chart analysis. It may be useful, but is nonetheless a bitcomplicated, and I would prefer that a newtechnique could provide more detail.

The author explains the major componentsin sequence, and provides examples ofhow these components would work in abirth chart. She also provides an extensiveexplanation of fortunate and unfortunatelunar mansions (nakshatras) and providesan excellent analysis of the Yogi (fortune)

and Avayogi (misfortune). This techniquecan be confusing for certain charts, but itis handled quite well here.

There are, however, a few shortcomings. The nakshatra (lunar mansion) sectionrepeats certain elements from her earlierworks a little too closely, and many ana-lyses are a bit vague about how nak-shatras manifest in a person’s life. Othertechniques (like the yogas) share a similarflaw, but they are interesting. Also, thereis a tendency to rectify charts a little toomuch, as the significations in the rectifiedcharts don’t always seem to justify theadditional effort. For example, in ArnoldSchwarzenegger’s chart, the non-rectifiedchart seems perfectly fine in terms of chartinterpretation. Finally, there is a significantediting mistake regarding an upcomingtransit of Ketu that is identified as Rahu.

Sutton addresses the spiritual implicationsin a chart, but I worry that in some placesshe gets a bit too didactic for my taste. Iam often uncomfortable with astrologersinterpreting levels of spirituality, sincemany astrologers have limited qualifica-tions to approach this topic.

Overall, this is a well-constructed,interesting book. It gives a much easier-to-understand presentation of thePanchanga than I have seen in othertexts, and would make a useful addition toany astrologer’s resources. reviewed by Gary Gomes

ON BEHALF OF NCGR’S NEW YORK

City Chapter, I sadly report thenews of Julian Armistead’s death.

Our community has lost another one ofour great lights this year. Julian served onour Board for nearly 20 years, primarily inthe role of Vice President. Thanks to hisexpertise from his day job in contractnegotiations for Y & R Advertising, hebrought a terrific business acumen to thechapter, helping us to be more profes-sional, well-functioning, and responsible. Many of his ideas gave shape to NCGR,locally and nationally, as we know it, andthose ideas are still in practice today.

One of his major contributions was on theoriginal education committee to create thecertification program. He was also the

Transitions: Julian Armistead(1926-2008)

first astrologer to achieve double NCGRcertification in consulting and research.

His research project was his proudestprofessional accomplishment, amonograph on the rectified chart of theUnited States, painstakingly researchedastrologically and historically. Heconcluded that the U.S. was actually bornon July 2, 1776. This chart is proudlypublished in Nicholas Campion’s Book ofWorld Horoscopes and the monograph isin the New York City NCGR’s JoannaShannon Library.

Julian was ever-the-avid student of astro-logy, dating back to the days of the Astro-logical Guild in New York, and studyingwith the likes of Al Morrison and CharlesJayne. Although he was a man of greatculture and sophistication, he could justas easily don a clown’s nose, do sillyantics, and enjoy quick witticisms. He alsopossessed a passion and kindness for dogs, spending some years as a breeder.

Most of all, however, I think Julian will beremembered in partnership with hisbeloved, Joanna Shannon, anotherlegendary name in the NCGR canon.Together and individually, they were greatastrologers, teachers, leaders in thecommunity, and role models from theapartment they called the love nest. Ifthere is, indeed, a time and place wheresouls are reunited, then I’m sure these twoare joined together again.

Julian cared for his own and had a deepconcern for the youth in the astrologycommunity. So, in his honor, his estate willmake a donation to NCGR’s Lucy TitunikFund and the Association for Young Astro-logers (AYA). Contributions to the TitunikFund and AYA in Julian’s name are welcome.

Being a great lover of the juniper berry, ashe liked to call his gin, I lift my cup toJulian’s life and say Cheers, oldfriend….and thanks! John Marchesella

From the Editor...

FOR THOSE OF YOU who wonder why I donot write an editorial in every issue, the

answer is simple...No room. I would ratherprint your words than my own, but when Ido find a little spot, I gladly make it my own.

I am happy to say that in this issue, thereare four excellent articles by four talentedastrologers, three of whom (Manda, Lynn, and Alex) are making their memberletterdebut though they are far from beginners. Irealize that with the exception of JackieSlevin’s article on the midheaven, the ar-ticles all concern violent subject matter, butdo put that aside, since the research andconclusions are most impressive. This istruly one of memberletter’s missions, tonurture astrologers and writers who wantto show their wares to a captive audience, all of whom share their passion for astrol-ogy. I hope more of you will contribute.

I also hope to see many of you at UAC. Ialways look forward to these conferences, since I can finally put faces to the names, and greet those of you whom I alreadyknow. Please say hello to me, even if I lookbusy. And don’t hesitate to tap me on theshoulder if my back is turned. Chances arethat I won’t be too busy to say hello, espe-cially since we may not run into each otheragain. Do visit the NCGR table and attendthe membership meeting. Have a safe trip.

Sixteen Years of Polishing and Refining

The new Solar Fire Gold is full of thoughtful touches and

inspired new features—like Eris, Sedna and 12 other

new points in the regular wheel • transit/progression calendars

• improved ultra-precise dynamic hitlists • Astrodynes • artist-

designed decorative pages • wheel, page and print previews •

and unique fi rdaria reports that you won’t fi nd elsewhere.

However, right from its 1992 debut as the fi rst major

Windows astrology program, Solar Fire has aimed not just

to give state-of-the-art calculations, but to make them truly

easy for the user. Sixteen years and seven incarnations later,

it’s still at it—not only piling on lots more features, but also

taking its renowned smoothness and polish to a new level

of refi nement. The result? Solar Fire Gold v7, astrology’s

longest-running, most polished and user-tested program.
