2018 ML SLC/NLC Competitive Event Topics ELEVATOR SPEECH (Individual) Present an elevator speech to a State Senator about how FBLA-Middle Level helps students develop leadership skills and why it is important to have this organization in middle schools.

Multimedia & Website Development (Individual) Design, build, and launch a website that features the competitor’s ability to incorporate the elements of website design, graphic layout, and proper coding techniques. ▪ Website Topic: Promote the new LEAD Program.

▪ BUSINESS CONCEPTS Category: Objective Test Type: Individual The American business enterprise system functions effectively when participants are properly trained to make good business decisions. This event provides recognition for FBLA members who demonstrate an understanding of the American business enterprise system and its effect on consumers, employees, and entrepreneurs.

COMPETENCIES: business, consumerism, money management and banking, and rights and responsibilities of managers, employees, owners, and government.

ELIGIBILITY

State—This event is a SLC event ONLY. Each local middle chapter may enter up to 15 students (grades 5-9) who are members of an active local Middle-Level chapter and are on record in the Wyoming FBLA office as having paid state and national dues by January 31 of the current school year.

REGULATIONS

▪ Participants must not have been previously a state winner in this event. ▪ Participants failing to report on time for this event may be disqualified. ▪ Participants must adhere to the dress code established by the National Board of Directors, or

they will not be permitted to participate in the competitive event.

OVERVIEW

▪ A 30- minute, 50-question, written objective test will be administered based on the previously listed competencies.

▪ Participants must furnish their own No. 2 pencils and erasers. They may use their own cordless non-graphing calculators.

JUDGING Tests will be machine graded. Ties will be broken by comparing the correct number of answers to the last 10 questions on the exam. If a tie remains, the competitor who completed the test in a shorter amount of time will place higher.

AWARDS—The first four (4) places may be recognized. This is a state event only and nationals does

not recognize the winners.

▪ BUSINESS MATH & FINANCIAL LITERACY Category: Objective Test Type: Individual Acquiring the ability to solve common business problems is a basic mathematical skill needed by all prospective business employees. The event is designed to provide recognition for FBLA members who understand basic arithmetic functions needed in business.

COMPETENCIES: percentages; fractions and decimals; ratios and proportions; savings; checking accounts; decision making; taxes; investing; insurance; real estate; financial goals; definition of terms; basic economic concepts

ELIGIBILITY

▪ State—Each local middle chapter may enter up to 15 students (grades 5-9) who are members of an active local Middle-Level chapter and are on record in the Wyoming FBLA office as having paid state and national dues by January 31 of the current school year.

▪ National—The first-place winner at the State Leadership Conference is eligible to compete at the National Leadership Conference. If the first-place winner is unable to compete at the National Leadership Conference, the second-place winner will be contacted, etc., in an attempt to fill the slot.

▪ COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT Category: Presentation with Equipment Type: Chapter

Community Service is essential to the areas in which we live. This event recognizes middle-level chapters that have accomplished a local community service project.

PERFORMANCE COMPETENCIES: demonstrate excellent verbal communication; display effective

decision-making and problem-solving skills; express self-confidence and poise; work well as a team when applicable; exhibit logic and systematic understanding; conduct a professional business presentation; answer questions effectively when applicable.

ELIGIBILITY

▪ State—Each middle-level local chapters (grades 5-9) may enter one (1) individual or team with up to three (3) members. The chapter must be an active local chapter and on record in the Wyoming FBLA office as having paid state and national dues by January 31 of the current school year.


REGULATIONS




PREFORMANCE GUIDELINES

▪ Competitors may present directly from their laptop/devices. ▪ NO PROJECTORS MAY BE USED IN THE PERFORMANCE

OF THIS EVENT. ▪ Internet access will not be provided. ▪ The individual or team must perform all aspects of the

presentation. Other chapter representatives may not provide assistance.

▪ Visual aids related to the project may be used; however, no items may be left with the judges or audience.

▪ In the case of a team event, all team competitors are expected to actively participate in the performance.

▪ Performances may be open to conference attendees, space permitting. Competitors in this event may not view other competitors’ performances in this event.

JUDGING

A panel of judges will judge the performance component of this event at the State Leadership Conference. All decisions of the judges are final.

Knowledge of keyboarding applications is a necessity in today’s high-tech business world. This event is designed to recognize FBLA Middle Level members who can demonstrate basic keyboarding application skills.

COMPETENCIES: production of business and person letters, memos; tables; and reports.

ELIGIBILITY


REGULATIONS

▪ Participants must not have been previously a state winner in this event. ▪ All documents produced for this event must be PRINTED as PDF files and uploaded to the

state chairperson to be received no later than 7 days prior to the first day of ML SLC.

SITE-TEST GUIDELINES

▪ Forty-five (45) minutes will be given for the production test to be administered prior to the State Leadership Conference at the local middle school by an impartial administrator (someone other than the FBLA adviser). Additional time will be allowed for general directions, equipment set up, and warm up. Problems are weighted according to difficulty and may be completed in any order.

▪ Results will be based on mailable copy based on the Standards of Mailability. ▪ Participants must recognize the necessity for accurate proofreading. ▪ FBLA Format Guide. This reference is located in the online Chapter Management Handbook,

and it should be used to prepare for site testing. The FBLA Format Guide should be used during the site-testing portion of these events.

JUDGING

Production tests will be scored based on uploaded copy prior to the ML SLC. All decisions of the judges are final.

OVERVIEW

This event consists of a three (3)-minute speech. The speech must be of a business nature and must be developed from one or more of the nine (9) FBLA-PBL goals. The goals include:

▪ Develop competent, aggressive business leadership ▪ Strengthen the confidence of students in themselves and their work ▪ Create more interest in and understanding of the American business enterprise system ▪ Encourage members in the development of individual projects that contribute to the improvement

of home, business and community ▪ Develop character, prepare for useful citizenship, and foster patriotism ▪ Encourage and practice efficient money management ▪ Encourage scholarship and promote school loyalty ▪ Assist students in the establishment of occupational goals ▪ Facilitate the transition from school to work

PERFORMANCE GUIDELINES

▪ The speech must be of a business nature and must be developed from one or more of the FBLA-PBL goals.

▪ When delivering the speech, competitors may use notes prepared before the event.

▪ No other reference materials such as visual aids or electronic devices may be brought to or used during the event preparation or presentation.

▪ Competitors must prepare speeches. Advisers and other are not permitted to help.

▪ Performances may be open to conference attendees, space permitting. Finalists may not view other competitors’ performances in their event.

JUDGING—A panel of judges will evaluate speeches. All decisions of the judges are final.
