He recently gave the UK Stage Premiere of Gerald Barry’s virtuosic The Importance of Being Earnest with the Britten Sinfonia at the Royal Opera House, to great critical acclaim. Last season saw several significant debuts; at the Gran Teatre del Liceu, Barcelona, and Théâtre du Châtelet, Paris, with Kurt Weill’s Street Scene, and at the London Coliseum with an acclaimed production of Porgy and Bess with Cape Town Opera and the Orchestra of Welsh National Opera. He was subsequently invited to conduct Porgy and Bess in Cape Town with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2011 his diary included performances of Turnage’s Twice through the Heart at Sadlers Wells with Sarah Connolly, the UK premiere of Tobias Picker's Fantastic Mr Fox for Opera Holland Park, and Stephen Deazley’s The Sleeper for Welsh National Youth Opera. Previously at the Royal Opera House he gave the premiere of The Doctor’s Tale in collaboration with Monty Python’s Terry Jones, and conducted two new works for family audiences, The Enchanted Pig and The Gentle Giant. From 2009-11 he worked closely with Mark-Anthony Turnage on the opera Anna Nicole. His other operatic performances include Babur in London for the Opera Group, The Silent Twins for Almeida Opera, Don Giovanni and La Bohème for Co-Opera Company, and The Magic Flute and Tobias & the Angel for English Touring Opera. As former music director of the pioneering opera company Tête à Tête he gave the premieres of over twenty operas by British composers. As an assistant he has worked on Turandot (Royal Opera House), A Midsummer Night's Dream and Mirandolina (Garsington) and L'Arlesiana (Opera Holland Park). Since making his BBC Proms debut with the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group at the age of 21, Murray has conducted many orchestras and ensembles, including Philharmonia Orchestra, Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, London Mozart Players and City of London Sinfonia. Murray often broadcasts on BBC Radio 3, most recently with the BBC Concert Orchestra, with the ensemble Chroma and at the BBC Proms. His work with BBC Singers has included concerts in the BBC Radio Theatre, Jonathan Harvey’s Forms of Emptiness as part of ‘Total Immersion’, and acting as chorus master on Fidelio for Barenboim and the West-East Divan Orchestra at the BBC Proms. He has been principal conductor of the Salisbury Sinfonia for 10 years. He is increasingly in demand as a conductor for contemporary dance. In 2011 he collaborated with Wayne McGregor and Random Dance on the successful premiere of Mark-Anthony Turnage’s Undance. He works frequently with the choreographer Will Tuckett, including The Soldier’s Tale in Japan, and The Wind in the Willows and Pinocchio at the Royal Opera House. He is a regular guest conductor for Rambert Dance Company. Murray studied at Cambridge University, the Royal College of Music, and the Tanglewood Music Center, and with Oliver Knussen at the Britten-Pears School. After graduating he worked as a repetiteur and assistant conductor, including several seasons at the Spier Festival in Cape Town - the start of a fruitful relationship with music-making in South Africa. www.tim-murray.net
