The other day I was getting towards the end of a mix, only to realize that

I had slathered reverb and delay all over the song. After spending hours

sculpting the perfect space, it had come to dominate the song.

So, I started thinking about the rules and guidelines for using reverb and

delay in a mix. As I searched the Internet, I found tons of information,

and no clear consensus.

I realized that the experts are actually just like you and me. That is to

say they have preferences and their own way of doing things. So, if you

want to be an expert, you should probably get some experience in the

field, mess about with delays and reverbs, and then adopt an

uncompromising opinion on the “rules of creating depth with time-based

effects.”

Pick your reverbs and delays so they best compliment the sources they

are effecting. For example:

- Bright reverbs on dark sources.

- Dark reverbs on bright sources.

- Open and smooth reverbs on dense,

harder sounds like snare drums

- Dense, coarse reverbs on smoother sounds like clean guitars.

Creating contrast and texture with reverb? Is that a good idea?

Sometimes it is. Sometimes, you just want to keep things nice and

smooth. Take the suggestions and throw them in the blender with the

rest of the stuff we find here.
