The Milton Keynes Dons moved to their new stadium in 2007. At a cost of around £50m, the 22,000 all-seater stadium was designed by the architects responsible for the Emirates and Wembley stadia. A striking feature is the roof, which is set up high with a large gap beyond the rear roof of seating, allowing natural light to reach the pitch.

The stadium has two tiers, with the upper tier largely unused with the exception of the Directors’ box and executive and corporate hospitality areas.

At the time of construction, the piping was put into place for undersoil heating facilities. With the ground also to be used by RFU teams, undersoil heating is considered a necessity. However, as the facility has remained unused, Mitton was called in to survey and report on the services.

Pressure testing revealed a number of issues, and Mitton was commissioned to repair and upgrade the system in line with current

requirements. The system is now up and running, and Mitton is also designing a new, more efficient boiler package to enhance energy performance at the stadium.

Benchmarking for stadia nationwide

With the price of energy spiralling upwards and many stadia saddled with inefficient heating, lighting and building management systems, developing a strategy for effective energy use is a vital consideration. Mitton has invested in portable, temporary metering solutions to assist sporting clients to create an ‘energy map’ for their buildings and facilities.

The service opens the door to significant savings, allowing Mitton to drill down through the consumption profile and pinpoint the highest users and usage areas, assessing the scope for consumption reduction.

For further information please email [email protected], and Mitton’s team of regional environmental engineers will make contact with you to assess your requirements.

Acquisition by Morrisons of the Farmers Boy cooked meat production plant on Deeside has added to the organisation’s existing capacity, enabling the supermarket to produce nearly all of its requirements in-house.

Farmers Boy operate a number of Morrisons’ own purpose-built fresh food factories, producing pizzas, pies, cooked meats and sausages, as well as packing cheese and bacon.

As well as upgrading provision of services in the food preparation areas, Mitton was commissioned to install a new vacuum system to handle the packaging of all cooked and deli meats, involving over 60

metres of piping and upgrading electronic control systems to ensure efficiency and reliability.

Phased over four months, the work is now complete and the 175,000ft2 factory, which has been significantly developed and now employs 600 people, currently produces more than 1.5 million packs of sliced ham and poultry products each week.

Mitton Aftercare has also been awarded a twelve month maintenance contract for the Deeside site.

Wakefield 41 is a popular, well-established business park located off the A650, quarter of a mile from junction 41 of the M1 motorway. The location provides excellent access to the motorway network as well as the centres of Leeds and Wakefield.

Working closely with main contractor Keighley-based R N Wooler Ltd, Mitton has completed a contract for all mechanical services work to increase capacity in the fresh/chill area of Morrisons’ Regional Distribution Centre, located on the park.

Tasks included stripping out the existing gas pipework and high level radiant heater, installing ventilation and ductworks and redirecting existing water services.

The contract was completed on time and to budget.

At WORK At JUNCtION 41

With more than 500 stores across the UK, from Supercentres to ASDA Living, keeping the estate at the peak of performance in terms of mechanical services is a challenging issue for the supermarket group.

Mitton has been commissioned to provide mechanical services support for the upgrade of two stores, one in Galashiels, Scotland and the other at Capehill, next to West Bromwich Albion’s football ground.

ASDA has commissioned a total refurbishment and extension for both stores, working with main contractors HB Projects in Scotland and Wood Green Construction in Capehill.

The team from Mitton will handle all mechanical services work including the provision of hot and cold water systems, heating and ventilation. The work will also include moving pipework, upgrading services to improve overall efficiencies and general aesthetics.

Definitely not one for the squirrels – the potentially deadly effects of nut allergy have meant that food manufacturers are acutely aware of the need to control the presence of nuts in the production cycle.

Pro-Pak Foods is a young and dynamic producer of quality chilled foods, supplying chilled ready meals and sliced cooked meats to national multiple retailers and food service operators.

The company approached Mitton to secure the feed into and from a hopper used to add nuts to a branded curry. The remit was to seal off the production process, using an air filtration system to ensure the remainder of the site was protected from the possibility of ingress of nut dust.

The work was completed and tested to ensure its efficacy, protecting both people and products during the production process.

MIttON At WORK FOR ASDA

FRESHLY MADE IN CHESHIRE!

Mitton has been hard at work at yet another branch of Farmers Boy, this time the plant located in Winsford, Cheshire.

Originally owned by Vion Food Group, Morrisons acquired the production facility to further expand its in-house retail meat packaging capabilities.

Investment in the plant has seen capacity increase from the original ten production lines to twenty-one, with Mitton installing and upgrading services including the provision of gases such as O2, CO2 and nitrogen as well as chilled water, compressed air and Glycol cooling.

It is now some years since Mitton completed a massive schedule of conversions on Safeway stores acquired by Morrisons, successfully completing a project originally planned for a three year period within eighteen months.

In total, Mitton carried out conversions on 197 large stores, 8 megastores, 127 petrol filling stations and 12 boiler plant renewals, as well as a single air conditioning plant renewal on a store in Gibraltar!

The company has now been commissioned to carry out a blanket boiler plant replacement scheme across 200 of these stores, bringing them up to the standards demanded by Morrisons and facilitating hook-up to Mitton’s Building Management System for monitoring to ensure optimum operational efficiency.

With the stores located from Inverness in the Highlands to Penzance in Cornwall, Mitton will be making full use of the company’s established nationwide presence to project manage the works, upgrading the plant in line with specifications.

The company will also be utilising their specially developed portable Heat Stores to ensure that trading continues uninterrupted at each retail site.

The pending phase out of R22 refrigerant in line with EC Regulation 2037/2000 on ozone depleting substances (ODS) is approaching. From 1 January 2015, sales or use of recycled/recovered R22 will be prohibited. If you need advice on your legal obligations, contact Paul Bennett on 01274 691177.

Energy Assessment Certificates

If your building operates air conditioning units over 12 kW in power, current legislation demands that these are energy assessed every 5 years and carry a valid energy assessment certificate. For all new systems installed on or after 1 January 2008, the first inspection must have taken place within 5 years of the installation date.

Mitton’s Air Conditioning Division provides a specialist service to comply with this legislation. On completion, we lodge the report with a government-approved accreditation scheme to guarantee compliance with the legislation.

If you would like more information on our Air Conditioning Energy Inspection Service, please contact Paul Bennett on 01274 691177.

AIR CONDItIONING - ARE YOU COMPLIANt?PHASING OUt R22 – tHE DEADLINE APPROACHES!

After the continuous downpours of summer 2012, the idea of water shortages has largely disappeared, but with extended opening hours planned for the Olympic period, Morrisons were leaving nothing to chance.

Covering all eventualities, Mitton held a large water tanker on standby to supply Morrisons’ stores in and around the capital in the event of any water problems.

Fortunately, the water supply was not needed and the Olympic trading period was not disrupted in any way!

Widely considered one of the best golf courses in the Yorkshire area, with a continuous programme of investment in the golf course and facilities, Shipley Golf Club was designed by the renowned golf course architect Dr Alister MacKenzie, and is tucked away in a beautiful, mature wooded valley at Beckfoot just outside the town of Bingley.

This year’s torrential rain had taken its toll on the boiler room facilities. Unseasonal flooding had caused significant damage to the boilers, and Mitton was called in to provide a fast and effective solution.

Mitton’s specialist team specified and replaced one of the two boilers, including replacement of valves and controls. The less damaged of the two original boilers was successfully refurbished and installed as a backup unit.
