MITIGATION PLANTINGS 2

MITIGATION PLANTINGS

WHEN THE MINIMUM NUMBER OF

SIGNIFICANT TREES CANNOT BE SAVED.

THE GOAL :

TO MAINTAIN OR INCREASE CANOPY

COVER

RESULTING IN “No net loss of canopy cover”.

MITIGATION PLANTINGS 3

MITIGATION PLANTINGS

USUALLY BASED ON:

Diameter inches at DBH of lost tree.

Number of lost trees.

Minimum number of trees, or tree units,

required onsite.

Minimum square footage of tree canopy

cover required onsite.

RATIO OF REPLACEMENT

ALTERNATIVES

One (1) tree planted for each tree lost.

One (1) diameter inch planted for each

diameter inch lost.

One (1) diameter inch planted for range of

diameter inches lost.

EXAMPLE OF RANGES:

2 – 2” cal. dec. tree or 10’ conifer tree for 6”-10” tree lost.

3 – 3” cal. dec. tree or 10’ conifer tree for 11”-20” tree lost.

4 – 4” cal. dec. tree or 10’ conifer tree for 21”-30” tree lost.

5 – 5” cal. dec. tree or 10’ conifer tree for 31”-40” tree lost.

6 – 6” cal. dec. tree or 10’ conifer tree for 41”-?” tree lost.

MITIGATION PLANTINGS

SIZE OF REPLACEMENT TREE:

Recommend 2”-2.5” caliper deciduous or 10’ conifer.

Largest most readily available.

Most common size planted.

Large enough to be significant.

Not too large to handle, special equipment not

needed.

Usually established in 1 to 2 years.

OPTION?:

Significant Tree Retention

Or Required Mitigation Plantings onsite or offsite.

CONSIDER:

For each significant size tree not retained, locate,

document, and identify 3 – 3”-6” caliper trees that

can be retained on the site. They can be in a group,

but must be far enough apart to be able to eventually

develop into a mature tree.

MITIGATION PLANTING-OPTION

Save smaller existing trees

LIKE THESE:

•VIGOROUS

•ACCLIMATED

•ESTABLISHED

•SMALLER CRZ

•MORE

SCREENING

•LESS COST

•GREATER

LONG-TERM
