4 Mitchell County Chamber of Commerce
O ver many years, Mitchell County has grown to be one of the major cultural centers in Western North Carolina. We enjoy not only the presence of the state’s most dynamic and impressive scenery, but also the knowledge that we encompass and display the entire heritage that has shaped our region.
Mitchell County’s reputation for scenery is known worldwide. We are home to Roan Mountain, which includes the largest display of bloom-ing native rhododendrons in the world. We are also a major stop on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Year-round, people from all over the world come to view this incredible vista, but no other time is more impressive than during our annual display of fall colors. Every ridge and tree is dressed in the most spectacular colors, giving visitors an experience like none other.
Here in Mitchell County, we are proud of our roots. We exemplify the qualities of patience, dedication and hard work on a daily basis. Our cultural background is not only something we cherish, but something we celebrate. Mitchell County is home to the world’s most famous craft school, Penland School of Crafts. Penland hosts 1,200 students per year on a facility covering 41 acres. The Artrain has visited Spruce Pine as one of only three stops in North Carolina on its nationwide tour. Also, Mitchell County hosts several annual festivals, including the North Carolina Mineral and Gem Festival, the North Carolina Rhododendron Festival, the Heritage “Hillbilly” Festival, and two new festivals: Hammerin’ by the Toe and the Bakersville Creek Walk Arts Festival. Additionally, Mitchell County plays host to a yearly Revolutionary War re-enactment displaying the history of the Overmountain Victory Trail.
We are also proud to be home to a wide variety of recreation. From hiking on the Appalachian Trail to rafting in the Nolichucky River, Mitchell County has it all. We even host several races annually. These include the Mineral City 5K, the Swiss Pine Triathlon and the new John E. Peterson Roan Mountain Climb, BIKECLIMB-4-LITERACY, to coincide with the Bakersville Creek Walk Arts Festival.
Mitchell County also has many plans for future growth and development. We have recently gained the official title of “Home of the Perfect Christmas Tree,” which will bring opportunities for growth to the county in this cottage industry. Also, through Mitchell County’s recent designation as a “21st Century County,” we have developed a new marketing plan for the county: “Hand Made Hospitality.” Further, Mitchell County is home to some of the world’s most recognized artists. From glassblowers, to weavers, to potters, Mitchell County has the best.
Mitchell County is known worldwide for its Spruce Pine Mining District. This small, 25-mile-long by 10-mile-wide Mining District is an important ingredient for making products we use everyday. Feldspar, mica and quartz are predominantly mined in Mitchell County. Quartz is used in several critical process steps during the manufacturing of computer semi-conductors (chips). No other quartz in the world can match its purity. Not only does this district supply valuable minerals to the world, but it also provides jobs to many residents of Mitchell County.
To our visitors, we hope that you decide to become a member of our Mitchell County community. We feel confident that you will find everything you could want in a new community. And to those who have already made Mitchell County their home, we would like to thank you for making Mitchell County a wonderful place to live.

M itchell County was formed in 1861 from Yancey, Watauga, Caldwell, Burke and McDowell
counties and named in honor of Dr. Elisha Mitchell, a professor at the University of North Carolina. While exploring Mt. Mitchell (located in neighboring Yancey County), the highest peak east of the Mississippi, Mitchell fell and was killed. He was buried on top of the mountain. The county is bounded by the state of Tennessee and by Avery, McDowell and Yancey counties in North Carolina.
Mitchell County is well-known for its scenery. It’s home to Roan Mountain, which is the largest naturally occurring rhododen-dron garden in the world. Bakersville pays homage to these blooms each June during the North Carolina Rhododendron Festival. The Blue Ridge Parkway skirts the southern sec-tions of the county and features many places to stop and admire the beautiful scenery. Mitchell County is bounded by one of the oldest mountains in the world, Grandfather Mountain, located in adjoining Avery County. The North Toe River flows through the county and joins the South Toe at Toecane to form the Nolichucky River, one of the best whitewater rafting rivers in the eastern United States.
Mitchell County is also known for its rich trove of gems and minerals. The world-famous North Carolina Mineral and Gem Festival, one of the oldest festivals
of its kind, is held in Spruce Pine each August. Rockhounds from around the world descend on the region to explore the vast treasures underground.
Indeed, one of the main industries in the region is mining. Mitchell County is home to the famous Spruce Pine Mineral District, which has one of the richest distributions of gems and minerals to be found any place on earth. Feldspar, mica, quartz and other minerals are actively mined in Mitchell County. The manu-facture of furniture has also been a traditional industry in Mitchell County for many years.
Mitchell County is located approximately 50 miles northeast of Asheville, North Carolina, and 25 miles southeast of Johnson City, Tennessee. Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, the county’s total land area is 220 square miles. Bakersville, the county seat, has a population of nearly 500. The county’s largest town, Spruce Pine, is located in the southern part of the county and is home to nearly 2,500 residents.
The mountain climate is perfect for many outdoor activities, including whitewater rafting, hiking, backpacking, camping, fishing, horse-back riding, canoeing, kayaking, mountain biking, picnicking, skiing and much more.
We experience four glorious seasons here. Springtime in the mountains is magical. During the summer, temperatures remain in the mid 80s, with refreshing cool mountain breezes.

The fall foliage offers picturesque views, warm days and cool nights. During the fall, local produce stands supply fruits and vegetables for res-idents and visitors to sample. The winters are relatively mild with mod-erate snowfall; most of the local ski resorts have excellent snowmaking equipment for the rare times that it’s needed. During the past five years, Mitchell County, “Home of the Perfect Christmas Tree,” has provided glass-blown ornaments from local artisans for the White House.
The region’s apple orchards provide delicious fruit as well as great sites for storytelling, music and enjoying the scenery.

7Hand Made Hospitality
M itchell County is home to almost 100 professional artisans in stu-dios and galleries showcasing
glass, pottery, weavings and jewelry. Twice a year, the Toe River Arts Council sponsors studio tours, during which you can visit the artists in their working studio environments.
The Toe River Arts Council (TRAC) is a nonprofit membership organization serving over 300 studio artists from Mitchell and Yancey counties. TRAC sup-ports regional, cultural, performing and creative arts. In addition to sponsoring educational and cultural events, TRAC also provides planning, research and fund-raising for art projects. The TRAC Center is located in Spruce Pine and offers tour maps, photographs and a tour exhibition of participants’ work.
Mitchell County is also proud to be the home of Penland School of Crafts. A national center for craft education, Penland was founded by Miss Lucy Morgan, a teacher at an Episcopalian school that once occu-pied several buildings that are still part of Penland. In 1923, Morgan organized the Penland Weavers, providing looms and mate-rials to local women and marketing their hand-woven goods. Morgan invited guest instructors to teach weaving; when requests for instruction began to come from other parts of the country, Penland School was born. Soon after the first students arrived in 1929, other crafts were added, and the school began to raise funds, acquire property and construct buildings.
Since that time, Penland has grown to encompass about 400 acres and 41 struc-tures. Today, over 1,200 people come each year seeking instruction. The school offers one- and two-week classes in the sum-mer and eight-week sessions in the spring and fall. The teacher structures each class, but most are a mix of demonstrations, lec-tures, individual studio work and field trips. Workshops include books and paper, clay, drawing, glass, iron, metals, photography, printmaking, textiles, and wood. The school also sponsors artists’ residencies and educa-tional outreach programs.
Penland Gallery, located on the school grounds, attracts over 14,000 visitors each year. The gallery displays and sells work by Penland instructors, resident artists, students and neighbors. A knowledgeable staff pro-vides information about craft processes, the school program, and the artists and studios in the area.
Living TreasuresAmong the area’s many artists are four
individuals whose achievements have brought them special honor. Arval Woody, Billy Ruth Sudduth, Bea Hensley and Harvey Littleton have all been recognized by the state of North Carolina as “Living Treasures.”
Arval Woody – Chair MakerCarrying on a family tradition that began
four generations ago, Arval Woody makes chairs that will last longer than a lifetime. The secret to the longevity of the chairs is simple — they’re crafted without glue or nails, just as Woody’s great-great-grandfather made them.
This nationally and internationally known craftsman works out of his shop in Spruce Pine. In the shop, you’ll find one of the chairs his grandfather made 100 years ago — which proves that the chairs are built to last.
Woody is inspired by the tradition of the family business and takes great pride in the quality of his family’s work. Today his chairs sell for $150 to $500, depending on the size and design. Among Woody’s designs are chil-dren’s rockers — President John F. Kennedy commissioned Woody to make two of the rockers for his children. When John Kennedy Jr.’s chair was sold at auction shortly before his death, it was purchased for $10,000.
Woody uses both machinery that he has salvaged as well as some he has invented himself. One of his machines, which digs mortises for chair back slats, was built in 1882. Woody also uses self-made machines to center blocks of wood before they are turned on a lathe, to level chair legs and to sand chair parts.
After Woody was profiled by Charles Kuralt on CBS, orders for his chairs sky-rocketed, including one order from a woman from Germany. And on her next visit to the United States, she made a side trip to visit Woody’s shop.

Billie Ruth Sudduth – Basket Maker A widely acclaimed basket maker, Billie
Ruth Sudduth displays her works in many public and private collections, including the Smithsonian Institution’s Renwick Gallery; the Museum of Art and Design in New York; the Mint Museum of Art; the American Embassy in Naimey, Niger; Glaxo; and Bank of America. Sudduth’s baskets have also been exhibited in museums and galleries in Germany and Denmark. She was named a North Carolina Living Treasure in 1997, becoming the 10th resident and the first female to receive the award.
Sudduth received a Niche Award in 1998 and a Smithsonian Craft Show Merit Award in 1997. She has also received an Individual Artist Grant, an Emerging Artist Grant and an Individual Visual Artist Fellowship from the North Carolina Arts Council. For five consecutive years, she has been selected by Early American Homes for its America’s 200 Best Craftsman directory.
Sudduth’s baskets have been shown in many newspapers and magazines across the United States. CBS Sunday Morning, PBS, Voice of America and HGTV have also fea-tured Sudduth and her baskets.
Bea Hensley – BlacksmithBea Hensley was born in 1919. The son
of a Baptist preacher, Hensley grew up in Burnsville, North Carolina. Hensley began an apprenticeship with Daniel Boone VI when he was a young boy. Boone, a direct descen-dant of the famous frontiersman, helped Hensley become familiar with the anvil, the forge and other tools of the trade.
From Boone, Hensley also learned the ancient “hammer language” once common among blacksmiths. Relying only on rapidly striking hammers to communicate, the smith and his striker give and carry out detailed forging instructions. Hensley believes that the version of hammer language he
learned — and has passed on to his son — can be traced back to Daniel Boone and Boone’s English ancestors, who were blacksmiths. A tradition in the Boone fam-ily says that this language was used in the building of Solomon’s temple.
In 1937, when Daniel Boone VI received an exclusive contract for restoration iron-work to be done in Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia, he built a new forge in Spruce Pine as his base of operations. After World War II, Hensley returned to the forge to help with the restoration work; it was Hensley who fin-ished the job in the early 1950s. He bought the shop from Daniel Boone VI and went into ornamental ironwork full-time.
During his 52 years of blacksmithing, Hensley often got up at 3 or 4 o’clock in the morning and worked until 9 at night. He spent some of that time teaching his son, Mike, in much the same way Daniel Boone VI trained him. Today, the Bea Hensley and Son Hand Forge remains a productive

and creative arena for both men. The skill and artistry of their work — and unsolic-ited orders from as far away as Queensland, Australia — demonstrate how successfully father and son have used the traditional techniques of an ancient craft to create fine ornamental ironwork that will serve future generations.
In 1995, the National Endowment for the Arts presented Bea Hensley with its highest honor, the National Heritage Fellowship Award.
Harvey K. Littleton – Glass ArtistHarvey Littleton, called the “Father of
the Studio Glass Movement,” didn’t start out as a glass artist. After completing his educa-tion, he embarked on a career as a potter. Littleton received recognition for his work as a ceramist in a national exhibition sponsored by the American Crafts Council and at the First International Exposition of ceramics in Cannes, France.
In 1959, Littleton began to investigate the possibility of using glass as a medium; by 1960 he had melted glass and cold-worked lumps of cullet (broken or refuse glass usually added to new material to facilitate melting in making glass). In the summer of 1962 the Toledo Museum of Art invited Littleton to lead a glassblowing workshop. It was at that seminar that he introduced the idea that glass could be mixed and melted, blown, and worked in the studio by the artist. Up to that time, it was widely believed that glass objects could only be made in the highly structured, mass-produced world of the glass industry.
That fall, Littleton, who had been employed since 1951 as a ceramics teacher at the University of Wisconsin, began to offer glassblowing classes through the university at his farm outside Madison, Wisconsin. In 1963, he established a graduate course and
glass studio at the University that attracted such well-known artists as Marvin Lipofsky and Dale Chihuly.
Littleton retired from teaching in 1976 to devote his time fully to his craft. He moved to Spruce Pine, where he set up his glass studio and produced his most tech-nically demanding and beautiful series of works: the sinuous “Lyrical Movement” and “Implied Movement” groups, “Descending” forms, and exuberant “Crowns” composed of multiple soaring arcs.
Museum recognition for Littleton’s work is vast. He has held solo exhibitions at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Museum of Contemporary Crafts in New York. All the major art museums in the country, as well as the White House, have collected his work.

T here are lots of places to explore in Mitchell County. If your inter-est lies outdoors, you can fill your
days with beautiful and exciting adventures. Mitchell County is home to the Appalachian Trail, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Roan Mountain, the Toe River, the Nolichucky River and dozens of walking trails along creeks full of native trout and breathtaking waterfalls.
The Appalachian Trail is 2,155 miles long and runs from Maine to Georgia. A section of the trail runs through Mitchell County near Roan Mountain. From Carver’s Gap, the trail is 1.36 miles to the fork of the Appalachian Trail/Grassy Ridge Trail and another .57 miles to a 360-degree view atop a pile of boulders on Grassy Ridge.
Beautiful in any season, Roan Mountain attracts those looking for spectacular views. The mountain is known for its large, natural rhododendron garden, which is celebrated each year at Bakersville’s NC Rhododendron Festival. It’s the perfect place for a scenic hike at any time of the year. Many consider Roan the most beautiful peak in the entire Appalachian Mountain Range. According to Dr. Elisha Mitchell, for whom the tallest peak in the range was named, it is the most spectacular of all the high mountains. The Cloudland Trail, a popular 1.2-mile hike
to the Roan High Bluff Overlook, is a major attraction.
The Blue Ridge Parkway offers many picturesque trails. Crabtree Falls is a two-mile hike featuring views of a 60-foot waterfall; it also offers picnic and camping opportunities. Chestoa View Trail offers an easy .63-mile loop hike to a majestic view. The Pinnacle of the Blue Ridge is a trail that begins near the Parkway at Toe River Gap, from which you can see mountain wildlife and views of the Black Mountain Range, the Craggies, Grandfather Mountain, Hawksbill, Table Rock and other well-known landmarks.
Mt. Mitchell is the highest peak east of the Mississippi River and offers short strolls and extensive hikes that feature spectacular views up to 70 miles away. There is also a museum near the summit, a concession stand and a seasonal restaurant.
Whitewater rafting and canoeing are both highly popular sports in the region. The fun begins in the northwest corner of Mitchell County, where the Nolichucky River Gorge opens. The nine-mile, six-hour trip through the 750-foot-deep gorge offers Class III rapids, depending on water levels. Spruce Pine’s Riverside Park has public access ramps for canoeing.

in Hawk, just four miles east of Bakersville) was established by Reuben Dellinger in 1867. It has been in the Dellinger family for over 140 years and is now run by Reuben’s great-grandson Jack Dellinger. Between 1997 and 2000, Jack restored the Grist Mill; it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.
At the mill, Jack grinds corn into cornmeal and grits, utilizing the same time-honored methods and machinery his ancestors used. The mill is operational every third week of the months of June through September and every day except Sundays in October and November. Tours and demonstrations are available when weather permits.
StorytellingStorytelling plays a large role in most
mountain cultures, and Mitchell County is no exception. Spruce Pine Main Street spon-sors the Toe River Storytelling Festival each year. It’s a full day of storytelling held at Riverside Park in Spruce Pine. (See TRAC’s Annual Events, page 15.)
You will also find storytelling at many other celebrations and festivals held through-out the year. Storytelling weekends (and weekdays by reservation) are held at the
Historic Orchard at Altapass on the Blue Ridge Parkway throughout the year.
MusicLike storytelling, mountain music is
an elemental thread in the region’s cul-tural tapestry. Music can be found at most community and Toe River Arts Council-sponsored events, as well as at venues across the area, like The Orchard at Altapass. Every Saturday, the Orchard showcases country and bluegrass bands that proudly display their Appalachian roots. On Sundays, The Orchard hosts a variety of local music, including gospel, blues, ’50s rock, folk, show tunes, clas-sical, country and bluegrass. The shows on Sunday are a blending of traditional mountain bands and more contemporary musicians who want to make this place their home. All of the music is provided at no cost to area residents and visitors. The core of the audience is regulars, divided among those whose families have been here for centuries, retirees who have relocated to the mountains after years of city living, and summer residents who come from all areas of the country.
Music wouldn’t be complete without dancing. The styles of dancing here are as

Mining
M ineral mining is Mitchell County’s major industry. Home to the Spruce Pine Mining
District, the county has a tradition of mining that began before recorded history. Today the area is one of the country’s major suppliers of feldspar, mica and quartz. State-of-the-art mining methods, research, plant produc-tion and product development have enabled the region’s high-purity natural resources to enhance our quality of life.
Feldspar is a major ingredient in the manufacture of many types of glass, from automobile windshields and computer screens to baby food jars and electric light bulbs. Feldspar is also a major ingredient in the manufacture of ceramic products, such as pottery, plumbing fixtures, electrical porcelain, ceramic tiles, dinnerware and much more.
Mica, another abundant mineral in the county’s mining district, is used as an industrial products special additive. Mica is an ingredient in special electrical insulators, automobile metallic flake paint and makeup and is used as a reinforcing additive in special plastics and paints.
Quartz is the area’s most “high-tech” mineral. It has traditionally been recovered and used as industrial sand in concrete and concrete mortar. Quartz has now become one of the most strategic minerals in the entire world. It is used in several critical process steps during the manufacture of computer semi-conductors (chips). Every computer chip in the world is created with Spruce Pine quartz.
Other Industries Another major industry in Mitchell
County is furniture manufacturing. Ethan Allen employs almost 400 people from the county.
Genesis Furniture, which opened at the end of 2005, will employ an additional 200 furniture workers.
Tourism is a prime driving force in the area’s economy and continues to grow every year. Thousands of tourists flock to Mitchell
County to enjoy the breathtaking scenery of the mountains and to attend the unique events we sponsor annually.

M itchell County has a wide variety of housing to offer, from small lakeside cottages to luxurious,
mountain-view estates. You’ll see a broad mix of architectural styles here, including condos, bungalows and ranch homes.
Most homes in Mitchell County are found in rural settings. There are, however, several subdivisions across the area. More “upscale” homes can be found in the subdivision near Grassy Creek Golf & Country Club.
Whatever your price range, you will find what you desire here. The Southeast is becoming an increasingly popular locale for people of all ages, and Mitchell County is one of the last areas of North Carolina where real estate prices are still reasonable. You can get a starter home for as little as $100,000. A three-bedroom, two-bath home averages around $130,000. Prices for homes in newer subdivisions start around $200,000.
Just as location is always key to real estate prices, the most coveted features in Mitchell County are the view and the proximity to water. Large homes at high elevations can be worth $1 million or more. These proper-ties usually include a large amount of land, which allows for plenty of privacy.
If you’re interested in buying large tracts of undeveloped land, Mitchell County is a great place to look. Lots of 50–100 land acres are easy to find here.
The area also has a large number of summer rentals and vacation homes. The region’s mild climate and cultural richness attract many seasonal residents and second-home buyers.
