MIT Global Start-up Labs (GSL), formerly known as MIT

AITI (Accelerating IT Innovation) is a multidisciplinary

group of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

that promotes development in emerging regions by

cultivating young technology entrepreneurs. Complete

curriculum materials, software technologies, platforms,

and networks have been developed to enable

undergraduate students to innovate in the area of

information and communication technologies (ICTs).

The programme is run within universities and courses are

taught by MIT instructors. The courses focus on mobile

and Internet technologies, and are structured so that the

students are awakened to the commercial possibilities of

the technologies. The MIT GSL Malaysia was successfully

organised by MDeC and the Entrepreneurship Unit,

Ministry of Education Malaysia (MOE), hosted by Universiti

Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in 2014. 35 students from

15 IHLs took part in the 6 weeks training which

commenced on 30 June – 15 August 2014 which resulted

in 5 projects and 3 startups.

Why Mobile Technology?

A mobile phone is not only a communication device, it also

represents the most accessible computing device to the majority of

humans. Mobile phones are tools that can promote development by

inspiring new business opportunities and increasing efficiencies.

Local entrepreneurs' innovative use of mobile technology is at the

heart of this revolution.

INTERNATIONAL SUCCESS STORY

Mark Kaigwa MIT-AITI Kenya 2007 - one of Forbes 30 under 30!

The AITI-MIT experience for me cemented some

of the fundamental programming skills that have

helped me manage projects, work and lead

teams of technical and non technical people and

improve my consulting knowledge for my clients.

I'm elated at the chance to be part of a great

group of entrepreneurs as listed by Forbes and

to be an AITI alumni doing this is a boon for me

as well. My thanks to my mentors and trainers

who I still stay in touch with and to all who

continue to support the program as it's

developed to create some great minds in the

African technology space.

• Won the Financial Inclusion Category at Safaricom Appstar

• PesaTracker has received over 200 downloads in less than two

weeks of publishing at Google's Play

Vincent Maraba is studying for his Msc. in Telecommunication

Innovation and Development at Strathmore University, Kenya. He won

the 2012 Safaricom Appstar challenge finance category with his new

innovation, PesaTracker, an Android app that allows users to track,

analyse and backup their M-Pesa transactions. M-Pesa is an award

MIT GSL Malaysia is the most vibrant entrepreneurship training programme I had

ever joined. It provides an intensive learning curve and an extensive exposure.

Not only the hand-on assignments, but we also had a number of field trips that

allow us to visualise and understand what we are learning. We plan to continue

our efforts after the MIT GSL Program and launch the beta testing in University of

Malaya. UKM and KDU have shown interest towards RunningBus.

Project RunningBus is a mobile application that reduces students’ waiting time

for campus buses by notifying them when a bus is about to reach the bus stop. It

lets you view live coordinates, estimated arrival time and capacity of campus

buses that are installed with a GPS tracker within. Additionally, our clients could

access to our highly customizable big data analytics tools that provide day-to-day

business operation insights.
