Leading the Stereo 3D Revolution2D & S3D – Native Formats – Colour Grading – Truly Open

All in one complete real-time finishing system

10 – 14 September 2010 – Stand 6.A11, Hall 6 – IBC, RAI, Amsterdam

SGO will be unveiling Mistika Version 5 at IBC, revealing one of the most significant software releases to date, with a brand new interface for maximum user acceptability as well as a set of stunning new stereoscopic 3D and 2D tools.

Stereoscopic 3D is the buzzword again this year and SGO’s Mistika has been recognised as "the most capable system in the market for stereoscopic 3D finishing" according to Framestore’s Director of Technology Steve Prescott. Mistika has been taking London by storm, generating a lot of excitement because of its 2D and 3D capability and speed.

British Sky Broadcasting has chosen Mistika as a core system for their 3D channel launch. "SGO's Mistika was the clear choice for Sky… Mistika fitted in perfectly with its open platform and has just worked from day one… The support provided by SGO has been excellent and we certainly would not have been able to produce the amount of diverse content so quickly without Mistika." stated Sarah Cloutier, VFX Manager, Sky Creative.

Mistika also boasts an impressive 2D post production toolset with advanced editing, compositing, colour correcting and film restoration tools. Each of these interacts seamlessly with the next in a fluid interface and many work in real-time without any need for rendering, even at resolutions up to 4K. All of the main features of the system, including its mind-blowing stereoscopic 3D functionality and native format workflows, will be demonstrated by some of the industry’s most accomplished demo artists and experienced Mistika visual effects artists.

Sky, The Framestore, Molinare, BTV, Infinia, On Sight, Preditors, El Colorado and many other facilities have chosen Mistika as their first choice.

You can find out about all of these exciting developments at the SGO Mistika stand, where the team will be delighted to discuss your creative and technical requirements.

S3D Technologies will be showcasing the new S3D Beam Splitter Rig and S3D Calculator at the SGO stand, which will demonstrate how the rig’s design and function significantly facilitate a fast, reliable and stable stereo 3D production process. The S3D Calculator is a software package developed by S3D to complement their rigs and connects from PC, Mac or iPhone to calculate stereoscopic parameters during a shoot. Projectors from projectiondesign can also be seen on the SGO stand this year at IBC as well.

SGO’s Stand 6.A11 is located in Hall 6. For further information or to reserve your place for a private Mistika demo, please email [email protected]

SGO Mistika – Key Product InformationBrief product overview

Mistika is a complete, high-end finishing post production system featuring editing, compositing and colour grading. Each of those areas are seamlessly integrated into a single timeline-based interface, allowing live interaction between all functions. Mistika accepts almost any image resolution from SD to 4K and beyond, in 2D and 3D.

RED Camera based projects

Mistika can decompress and grade from RED camera files in real-time without any importing or cross conversion processes. By working directly from the RED files, Mistika retains access to RED specific meta-data such as exposure, white balance and gamma curve settings, whilst also benefiting from more efficient usage of image storage space. Many other products that claim to support RED files do so by first converting the RED files to their own convenient format. This requires time for cross conversion, more disk space to hold larger files and looses access to the RED meta-data. One of the strongest points of Mistika is its colour correction function that can compete with any stand-alone grading system. Combining this grading power with direct and real-time access to RED files creates an extremely capable and efficient RED based workflow.

Stereoscopic 3D workflow

Mistika was already credited with the most advanced stereoscopic toolset on the market, but the launch of Version 5 at IBC 2010 will be used to present a ground-breaking level of creative control for stereoscopic material. Mistika's existing advanced features include optical recognition between left and right cameras to aid the rapid correction of inherent stereo problems, such as camera pairs that are not exactly aligned. Mistika also allows its very strong colour grading functions to be applied to both image streams at the same time, or to just the left or right as needs be. Compositing can also be carried out in 3D. Mistika's real-time stereo tools including colour grading, convergence adjustments and camera error correction, as well as some very advanced features such as retrospective adjustment of the cameras interocular distance have left the market stunned by its ability. The details of even more powerful stereo 3D tools will be announced and demonstrated at IBC 2010.

System Speed

Mistika has been programmed to make maximum use of the GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) for some years. The result of this is unrivalled speed with many effects not requiring any processing (rendering) whatsoever. Speed benchmarks include:

Full colour grading on 4K DPX files without any rendering required.Motion estimated slow motion running in real time at up to 2K resolution.Real time, full resolution colour grading and convergence operations on stereoscopic material at up to 2K per channel. Many other real time functions including RED camera based workflows.

Open SystemUnlike many of its competitors, Mistika employs an open storage policy. Mistika can provide storage for any other product that allows connection to generic file systems. This allows Mistika to be easily integrated into an existing facility, because files of many different formats can be easily exchanged. With Mistika, it is also possible to develop custom scripts to aid integration and automate common functions.

SGO Mistika Project News

PICTORION das werk Berlin used Mistika to post produce Digital Cinema Projection for Cannes award-winning

World Premiere “Life, Above All”"I am certain, without a doubt, that Mistika should be classified as one of the world’s top

post production systems in the way it handled a project like this - effortlessly and fast with sheer power and stability!” Christian Tröger, Mistika Artist, PICTORION das werk

Berlin.

Berlin, Germany, 26 July 2010: SGO, is thrilled to reveal that PICTORION das werk Berlin GmbH completed all DI post production work for the Dreamer Joint Venture filmproduktion titled "Life, Above All" using Mistika. Mistika was used for the entire offline and online editing throughout the high profile project. “Life, Above All” was a world premiere, awarded the Prix Francois Chalais Award at the Cannes Film Festival 2010.

Filmed in South Africa, “Life, Above All” was directed by South African filmmaker Oliver Schmitz, produced by Oliver Stoltz with Bernhard Jasper as Director of Photography using the ARRIFLEX D-21 Camera. The "truly anamorphic" footage was recorded in dual stream on Sony HDSR tapes, known as the “Mscope” format. A key technical challenge and requirement facing Christian Tröger, Mistika Artist at PICTORION das werk Berlin, was to maintain and reproduce the unique “Mscope” format from the very first capture to the very last render, without losing any resolution or colour data in the process. "Mistika and its open architecture enabled us to choose a workflow that delivered the required results that the client expected in this case and we achieved it with ease due to Mistika’s capability and openness." Christian states.

In addition to the online post work, Mistika was also used in this project, to create and administer a camera chip pixel native source pool as DPX files. This in turn enabled the grading and finishing system to function seamlessly with the same files in the SAN network. After Senior Colourist, Philipp Orgassa, had completed grading the film, Mistika was also used to then create the final, logarithmic, 1920 x 1634 true anamorphic format and digital master. Christian confirms: "Due to the typical challenges that take place in the post process and high production levels, I am certain, without a doubt, that Mistika should be classified as one of the world’s top post production systems in the way it handled a project like this - effortlessly and fast with sheer power and stability!” “Life, Above All” is an emotional and universal drama about a young girl, played by first-time-actress Khomotso Manyaka, who fights the fear and shame that have poisoned her community. The film captures the enduring strength of loyalty and a courage powered by the heart. It is based on the international award winning novel “Chanda’s Secrets” by Allan Stratton. The film’s official website summaries the plot: “In the dusty small town of Elandsdoorn, a South African township not far from Johannesburg, life is simple and serene. A prevailing sense of deep pride tightly bonds together the entire community - but beware to those who step out of line…" The Official Images of the film can be obtained from this link courtesy of PICTORION das werk GmbH Berlin http://www.bavaria-film-international.de/htmls/bfi/index.php?site=program_photos&id=285

SGO Post NAB 2010 Press Announcement

SGO’s Mistika takes the US by storm making a significant impact at NAB 2010 with ground breaking new stereo 3D tools

Mistika makes a long lasting impression and is the talk of the town. Mistika has become the new buzzword linked with stereoscopic 3D

Soho, London, UK, 7 May 2010: SGO, leading European developer of high-end solutions for the post production and broadcast markets unveiled Mistika version 5.0 at NAB 2010 this April with great success, making a significant impact. Stereoscopic 3D is here to stay, and it brings with it new challenges in the post production arena. Mistika has become the new buzzword linked with stereoscopic 3D. Mistika is one of the most highly developed tools in the marketplace to date, respected for its ability to perform real-time playback and editing of 4K footage shot in stereoscopic 3D. US based post company Mighty Horn invested in a Mistika Post Production System following the success at NAB this year. Further details will be announced in a separate press announcement to follow about the sale.

“The SGO booth was constantly packed with eager visitors to witness Mistika’s immense power in action. Many high profile artists showed great interest in Mistika.” Stated Rafael Hernandez, SGO’s Director of Sales, North America. There were three private demo pods at the stand as well as a regular public demonstration showcasing Mistika’s latest stereoscopic 3D toolset.

“Those who took the opportunity to view a demonstration of Mistika commented that Mistika is exceptionally advanced and a reputable industry veteran said this is the most exciting product for the industry right now.” reported Rafael Hernandez, SGO’s Director of Sales, North America. Many other comments included that this was the best system in the market to date and a US journalist exclaimed that Mistika is a system that can really do everything. Another visitor to the booth said that he felt the stereo 3D train is fast approaching and there are two options, to either let it hit you and leave you behind or to prepare now to board the train with a tool such as Mistika in order to be able to deliver exciting new stereo 3D projects around the corner.

David Cox, loyal Mistika user and Visual Effects Artist commented in his NAB 2010 blog for Post Magazine: “I did some demos of the new 3D convergence tools and that almost knocked people off their chairs. Mistika could already retrospectively change the inter-ocular distance of the cameras (distance between the two lenses) but the latest version can divide the scene into three zones and adjust the effective IO distance differently in each. Those that have experienced the difficulties that are created by a close up subject with a distant background really appreciated how the IO distance could be adjusted to get an agreeable stereo effect from the foreground, whilst then being able to “pull back” the distant background so that it was not over-diverged. I could definitely detect a few brains bordering on exploding.”Geoff Mills, Director of Sales and Operations of SGO UK was also interviewed by Post Magazine amongst many other publications, you can view his NAB 2010 interview here: http://www.postmagazine.com/ME2/dirmod.asp?sid=&nm=&type=VideoLibrary&mod=Video+Library&mid=F9CF6647706A4F6896011A63F395F460&tier=3&id=9D348370CE6C4847B7584DF03D00AC4F or http://www.postmagazine.com/ME2/Default.asp

Mistika adds direct support for Avid’s DNxHD MXF format and greatly improves workflows

IBC, Amsterdam, 9 September 2010: In a continuing raft of developments for its Mistika DI and on-line finishing system, SGO has added direct support for Avid’s DNxHD MXF format, with the unique ability to both directly capture the format, and render and write back to disc in the same format. Along with Mistika's open storage, the addition of DNxHD continues to make Mistika the ideal system for all on-line and DI post-production workflows, and now provides direct media interchange with Avid’s range of offline editing systems. When viewed alongside Mistika’s impressive accomplishments for auto-conforming, editorial, grading, effects, and stereoscopic 3D, the addition of media interchange with Avid’s DNxHD format further extends the scope of creative capability Mistika represents.

Stereoscopic projects have become a major production focus, and demand a high-level of creative power and capability. Often, filming is performed using a stereoscopic rig set to a parallel configuration, which implies that scenes will be difficult to view until a post convergence change is added. With Mistika having the amazing ability to work directly from a cameras' RAW files without any importing or cross-conversion overheads, the addition of DNxHD format workflow, means it is now possible to simply export a side-by-side single stream of DNxHD files ready for offline editing in Avid, directly from the live dual camera input.

SGO’s Technical Director, Javier Moreno explains further. “From this example, the Mistika artist can continue to refine the rushes, by further correcting the camera line ups, adding colour grades and any other "fixes" that are required. When the offline editing process has been completed, Mistika can conform from the material and settings it already has, which means that the conform benefits from direct access to the full resolution original camera RAW files, as well as all of the corrections that have been achieved, both before and after the editing session commenced.”

From the perspective of the offline editor, the headaches and time-overheads of cross converting stereoscopic camera raw files prior to import are entirely avoided. Instead, the editor works directly from single stream files that are natively supported by the edit system and have stereoscopic alignment, and even colour transforms, already embedded. The result is an efficient and streamlined process. The main advantage of the new comform tool in Mistika is the capability to be able to start the post production process in parallell with the offline editing, because all VFX, colour grading and stereo adjustments can now be re-conformed for new EDLs automatically. Previously, many of these tasks had to wait until until the EDL editing had been completed, involving extensive manual work. Thanks to the new workflow in parallell, the total production time will now be reduced.

National Geographic Channel and Samsung rely on projectiondesign® in development of latest TV commercial

at On Sight

Fredrikstad, Norway, 10-12 September 2010 – cineo82 3D projectors from projectiondesign® have just been used by On Sight in the final grading of the National Geographic Channel (NGC) and Samsung 3D commercial for Anglo Filming. This was achieved inside the world-class 3D SGO Mistika Suite at On Sight in Soho, London. Another set of cineo82 3D projectors are also to be found at On Sight’s new 3D Centre located at Shepperton Studios, UK.

The projectors, distributed through RGB communications, were supplied, installed and aligned in early 2010 by post production specialists, Kaurus® who also provided the projection screens a n d c u s t o m f i l t e r s y s t e m s f o r t h e m u l t i - s t a n d a r d 3 D g r a d i n g s u i t e .

The commercial was created in support of Samsung’s ‘Planet First’ initiative for greener products and sustainable solutions. The spot depicts examples of innovative products like the Samsung solar powered mobile phone. The 3D captures the natural beauty of the location as well as Samsung’s latest product designs.

During post production, all client attended 3D on-line work and mastering was carried out in the HD Lab’s 3D Mistika projection suite. "Apart from the normal complexities of 3D, which the 3D Mistika Suite dealt with easily, it was also necessary to view the commercial as it was being made on a number of different displays including their grading-quality projection source, a calibrated TV monitor and the actual Samsung product," says David Cox, colorist and operator at On Sight.
