Introduction Developed in March of 2013, the Mississippi State Trial Garden is a relatively young public garden on the

campus of Mississippi State University. We focus our efforts on introducing and promoting new and

under-utilized ornamental plant material and on engaging non-gardeners, especially young adults, in the

hobby.

College-age adults are at a developmental stage when they are forming life-long habits, so it is very

important to make sure that they are exposed to gardening and made to feel like it is a hobby in which

they can successfully participate. We use the garden for education that seeks to engage young adults

because we have a large student population that have access to the site. We have also draw thousands of

people to campus on weekends for football games in the fall and baseball games in the spring.

We work to demonstrate specific gardening practices, like bio-swales and raised beds, and highlight great

ornamental plants that are either new or under-utilized. We are also home to several biologically, or

historically, significant collections, like our Asian Magnolias and the Eudora Welty Camellias.

When we first developed the garden, we were managing only about ½ an acre. We are currently

maintaining 6 ½ acres. We currently have nearly 400 taxa of herbaceous perennials and woody trees and

shrubs, as well as about 150 taxa of annual plants in trial and demonstration beds. Most of the taxa have

multiple specimens in the garden, in keeping with our mission of plant evaluation. As our perennial and

woody plant collection continues to expand, we are faced with producing larger transplants from the

propagules that we are able to acquire. We also try to grow multiple transplants of each new accession

so that we can speak to any potential issues that nursery and greenhouse producers might face. There are

many great landscape plants that will never see broad introduction because of production issues.

Acknowledgements The Mississippi State Trial Gardens at Mississippi State University would like to thank the many vegetative

and seed companies who participated in the trials this year. Without their cooperation and support, the

research done at the trial garden would not be possible. We also greatly appreciate the support of the

Mississippi Nursery & Landscape Association, whose generous financial support was critical. We would

also like to acknowledge the support of Mississippi State University Extension.

Cultural Information

Production Growing All seeds were received at the Mississippi State Trial Gardens in Starkville, MS in January and February

2015 for germination and growing-on in greenhouses located at the R. R. Foil Plant Science Research

Center. All vegetative varieties were received as plugs and transplanted shortly after arriving at the

Mississippi State Trial Gardens from early-March to mid-April. Seedlings and plugs were planted into

1801 Deep Inserts (Approximate Cell Size: 3 1/8 in x 3 1/8 in x 3 in Deep). Containers were filled with

Sunshine Mix #1 / LC1. Some of the larger species were finished into 5.5” round containers. Plants

were hand watered on an “as needed” basis while in the greenhouses.

Fertilization in Greenhouses Potting mix was amended with a CRF (Florikan Nursery Controlled Release Formula 12-6-6) at a rate

of 0.5lbs/ft3 (1.62 lbs N/yd3). Dosatron® fertilizer injectors were used in the greenhouses to fertigate

plants. Plants were started at a rate of 100 ppm N and finished at 200ppm N, constant feed.

Fertilizers were used in rotation from Peter’s Excel General Purpose (20-10-20), Peter’s Excel

CalMag (15-5-15), and Jack’s Professional Petunia FeED (20-3-19).

Chemicals Used in Greenhouses This year there were few abiotic or biotic issues in the greenhouse. A combination of mefenoxam and

thiophanate-methyl were applied twice to arrest root disease development. Low pest populations

and environmental conditions allowed that no insecticides or PGRs needed to be applied.

Landscape Plantings Soil Amendment & Bed Preparation All beds were cleaned of old planting material and weeds prior to planting. Where necessary,

glyphosate was sprayed on weeds. 2” of new Soil Conditioner media from Penick Organics was

added to all beds. The beds were crowned for better drainage and raked smooth.

Planting Dates Date Varieties

4/21/2015 Lantana, Verbena, Coleus

4/22/2015 Petunia, Cleome, Hibiscus

4/23/2015 Angelonia, Salvia, Penstemon, Abutilon, Tagetes, Zinnia, Cuphea, Ipomoea, Ageratum

5/28/205 Vinca

Irrigation All plants were thoroughly hand watered after being planted in the garden. Beds are zoned according

to weekly water use requirements and were over-head watered as needed, depending on the bed’s

water-use rating and rainfall.

Fertilization Beds were fertilized monthly with a 13-13-13 product at a rate of 1 lb. N/1000 ft2. Petunias also

received fertigation with Jack’s Professional Petunia FeED (20-3-19) monthly 300 ppm N.

Weed Control Glyphosate was applied to all beds prior to amendment in the spring. Edges of the beds and in the

pathways were spot treatment as needed. All other weeding was done by hand throughout the

season.

Pest & Disease Control Low pest populations and environmental conditions allowed that no chemical control needed to be

applied.

Baskets Containers & Substrate 10” hanging baskets were filled with Sunshine Mix #1 / LC1. Plants were grown to saleable size in

the greenhouse and moved outdoors to garden hangers on 4/21/2015.

Irrigation Baskets were irrigated two times a day (depending on rain), every day, for about the first two weeks

after planting and then four times a day after that. Each container has 1 drip emitter rated at 0.5

GPH. All baskets ran for 10 minutes per cycle, providing about 5% leaching daily.

Fertilization Potting mix was amended with a CRF (Florikan Nursery Controlled Release Formula 12-6-6) at a rate

of 0.5lbs/ft3 (1.62 lbs N/yd3). Dosatron® fertilizer injectors were used to fertigate plants in the

garden. Plants were fertilized weekly at 300ppm N with Jack’s Professional Petunia FeED (20-3-

19).

Pest & Disease Control Low pest populations and environmental conditions allowed that no chemical control needed to be

applied.

Data Collection Methods

Ratings of plants and flowers were collected on a bi-weekly basis from May to September. Photos were

also taken. Dead plants in the trial were excluded in the bi-weekly evaluation, so the ratings given only

reflect the live plants. Specific comments were also recorded.

Plants and flowers were rated 0-5 using the following scale:

0 = Dead/No flowers

1 = Poor: Plants are very sick or dying, extremely few flowers

2 = Below Average: Plants are unattractive in some form, i.e. – leggy growth habit, chlorotic or low

vigor, flowers are few and occurring sporadically

3 = Average: Plant appearance with growth characteristics that would be expected for the time of

season; flowers would be few but uniform across the plants

4 = Good: Plants look attractive (foliage, growth habit, etc.,); flowers are blooming strong and showy

5 = Excellent: Plants are very healthy and uniform; flowering is impressive
