Engineer s and Ar chitectureEngineel"ing was ori ginally defined as t he m't of manag ing ellgi nes. The defi nit ion has since been changed to t ha t of an l:lppliedscience concerned with utilizing inorganic products of eart h, pro pe l"

I t WQ uidseem tha t one might properly ca ll himself an engineer if he is engagedin an y of these activi t ies. For t his reason t he title cn{Jiucer meanslittle unless diffel'entiated.

Engineers of unlimited varie ty and degree of qunlification n.'ein volved in the manufactUre of building products for t he constructionindustry and thereby make an ind irect cont ribution to a l'chitectUl 'e,The engineers that are usua lly directly concerned with architectureare civ il eng in eers, str uctu ral engineers, electricnl engineers, andmechanical engineers,

The civil eng in eer surveys t he land, He locates pmper ty lines,t l'ees, ut ilities, and existing structures in addit ion to ground slopes,The stru ctu ra l engineer obta i ns so il information and designsfoundntions, He designs the wood, steel, or concrete members of thestru cture as necessary to suppor t a ll loads and resist a ll phys ical

fo.'ces,The electr ical engineer design s the electr ical distribution andcommunication systems for the stru cture, He provides electr icity forlighting and all power loads including specinl motor-ddven equipmen t appliances, heating, and cool ing, He makes prov is ions for thete lephone, inte r-com, and antenna systems,The mechanical engineer designs the plumbing, heating, cooling,

their particulal' fie ld from accredi ted schoo ls of engineering, Largearchi tectural firms often have engineel' membe ,'S, Others employ theil'own engineers on a full-time basis, In our state, most of t he eng in eershave individual pra ctices and se rve a number of architectural fi rm s.Either way, the professional engineer is a vita l and valued mem

    l e Corbusie r ' sFirst LJ. S. Build in g con . j"".d

Often called the "brut al" architect, for the roughhew n dcsi1I (\lid tcxture of h is buildi ngs, Le Corbu sier combined in this structure open square andrec tangular shapes, broken by curvillf: perimeterglass walls which are set in stark naturol concrete. The openness and wa lls of glass prov ide interpe netration of outdoor space, which is the key to thedesign of the building.

    -

Adding to the basic shape of the Center, Corbu ,as hc is genera lly kn ow n, utilized huge load bearingcolumns which rise throughout the building, floorto-ce iling window walls overloo king terraces, ve rtical and hori zon tal concrete sun screens, a curvilinear bisecting ramp , alld a five- flight f ~ ofcolored glass blocks to light the stair tower.Architectural designs like the column s and sun!!Creens outlining the window walls are a jolt tomany. The columns are spaced ir regular ly and varyin g sizes lire exposed within the classrooms as wellas at the base of the building. Their placement andsize depend on the need for support in the particular area.

The enormous sun screens give the glass walls adCfl'-set, rcces.sed appearance, and elim inate theneed for shades or shading
