ASCENSION

AND

MOTHER’S DAY Well, you are really going to stretch me today. It is Ascension Sunday and we moved it from Thursday to Sunday so we could all be here together and all celebrate this important feast. So that is what we should do. Some may say, But Father, it is Mother’s Day and you should preach about mothers. So the dilemma is whether to preach about the Ascension of Jesus or our Mothers. I could tease you and offer to preach two homilies today, but I know two homilies is never a good idea. So, in an effort to be at my most creative, check this out; I am going to preach about Jesus and God as our Mother, and this is where it gets most creative: for those who think I must be a raving liberal to try such a thing I will resort to using only the teaching of saints, popes, and doctors of the Church. You mothers listen up and enjoy, you who have mothers listen up and see how we honor your mother.

This Easter we were joyful because we remembered again that because Jesus is raised from the dead, death is destroyed for us who believe. Now at Ascension we are filled with joy because Jesus has ascended above all the angels and above all the powers to the very throne of the unknowable God. What really makes us joyful is that Jesus is a human being. That means our humanity ascended to the very throne of God. Humanity, then, is the closest thing to God. When God mounts his throne to shouts of joy then, humanity is enthroned to shouts of joy. This has meaning. If humanity is enthroned above all in heaven I don’t have to worry that God will grow tired of us, because God is us in Jesus. God joined us by becoming a man and because of that we ascended. This is why we call it the good news “The Gospel”. Now I am going to ask you to stretch your mind. I will only speak scripturally and in the words of the most renown saints. In the prophets we learn of God’s lovingkindess. Have you ever heard of God’s lovingkindness. That word is used specifically of a deep love or more specifically a womb love. It is the love a mother has for the child of her womb.

When God wanted to describe prophetically the love God has for humanity God borrowed your mother’s love. Think of a mother as we hear Scripture say, In God is life, and that we are born of God. Jesus gave birth to the Church on the cross. Only a mother feeds and nurtures from her body. Catherine of Sienna a canonized Saint and declared a Doctor of the Catholic Church (which means listen up) refers mystically to Jesus as our mother over thirty times in her writings. This is true of Bernard of Clairvaux, Anselm, Augustine, and many more. What you are as mothers is what many saints experience in Jesus as God. Lets finish with a quote from a recent pope. In 1978, Pope John Paul I said, “God is Father; even more, God is Mother.”

When God wanted to describe prophetically the love God has for humanity God borrowed your mother’s love.

CALLING ALL PARISH MEMBERS &

THOSE THAT WANT TO BECOME MEMBERS

IT IS TIME TO UPDATE YOUR PARISH RECORDS!

If you have not received your Envelopes or Raffle Tickets, you may have been marked inactive on our church records. If there are any changes you need to let the office know by calling or just write a note on your envelope. Your envelopes, or on-line giving are great ways to help with the bookkeeping for end of year and our Parish Membership list. You can also fill out a Registration Form with any changes (found at the Welcome Desk or Office). Return it to the Office or put in the collection basket. Becoming a member will put you on all mailings for special events and things going on around the parish. (You can also request to be put on a no mail list if you prefer. It is very hard for us to keep track of everyone. Please fell free to contact the office with any questions. FAITH FORMATION, EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY

May 8 – 7th Sunday of Easter

When I was left alone with the Blessed Virgin, She instructed me concerning the interior life. She said, The soul’s true greatness is in loving God and in humbling oneself in His presence,

completely forgetting oneself and believing oneself to be nothing, because the Lord is great, but He is well-pleased only with the humble, He always opposes the proud.

(Diary 1711)

O Father help us to be humble so that we may know you as Jesus knows you.

This week only the hard copy of the CD is on sale for $5 before we pack it away until next year. We have NEW MUSIC. A recording of First Friday Encounter Adoration from August, 2015 is now available for a suggested donation of $10. Stop at the Welcome Desk or Parish Office for copies. Center Road Meijer and “Simply Give” Partner with Holy Redeemer Outreach

Once Again

Beginning May 8, 2016, parishioners will be able to help Outreach meet the needs of the hungry in Burton and the 48507 communities using “Simply Give.” The campaign runs until June 19. Generous parishioners are asked to stop at a checkout and make a donation at the Meijer on Center Road. Look for the “Simply Give” card display near the checkout lanes. If you donate there, every $10 donation becomes a $20 food card for our pantry to use when we shop at Meijer and buy food to give to our clients. On June 3 and 4, take an hour off from the Festival and stop at the Center Road Meijer because those are our only “double match” days. When you donate $10 on the 2nd or the 3rd, the food pantry gets $20 for a total of $30 in “food credit cards” that the pantry can then use. This campaign was truly helpful in making it possible for our clients to often get fresh eggs, milk, and vegetables all winter thanks to your generosity last year. Please continue to show your love for those who need it now.

YOUTH GROUP AFTERSHOCK The youth group summer series meets through the summer On Sundays from 6:30p.m.-8:30p.m. We do not meet this week for Mother's day.

We resume our group Sunday night May 15.

PRESENT:

PAMPERED CHEF PARTY! JUST IN TIME FOR MOTHER'S DAY!

The Michigan Catholic Choir is hosting an online Pampered Chef Party. Would you please take a minute to view the online brochure and considering making a purchase? All proceeds will help The Choir with the purchase of vestments and sheet music. To access the online site, visit... h t t p s : / / p a m p e r e d c h e f . c o m / g o /micatholicchoir If you have any questions, please call on consultant, Rex at 810-444-1373. Thanks for your continued support!

On April 30, 2015, a group of volunteers came into the food pantry, packed everything up, moved it to a new building and set it up - all while clients were being served. In that year we have grown our food pantry, continued our special programs for the kids in the area, partnered with many other pantries to make sure that our people were well taken care of. We are still raising funds for a walk in freezer. We are part of the way there,

thanks to generous donations from Meijer and the Eagles Women's Auxiliary. But, one of our upright freezers has died. So we are looking for an upright freezer in good working order that someone is willing to donate to us. If you know of anyone, please let us know at 743-8530 and we will make arrangements to pick it up. As always, thank you for your support and God Bless! Sharon

After that series of 10 Pope Francis quotes on Evangelization (refer to the last 10 prose bulletins) it seems appropriate to remind us the evangelization is not a new thing in the Church. Reflect on these words by Pope Blessed Paul VI:

"We wish to confirm once more that the task of evangelizing all people constitutes the essential mission of the Church."

(Bl. Paul VI, Evangelii Nuntiandi #14)

Contact the parish office for more information about the evangelization efforts of the parish. Please especially pray for our current efforts to proclaim the Gospel to the community around us:
