Moving Forward
To fulfill your vision, you must have hindsight, insight and foresight.– Ifeanyi Enoch Onuoha
The Annual Celebration theme, “Celebrating Our Past, Present and More to Do” was both a statement of the joy of our rich legacy and recognition of the vast mission field ahead of us. The Leadership Team will spend some time over the next few months reflecting on this year and working to establish our goals for 2017. We will re-evaluate our programs in order to help strengthen our organization. Further, we will adapt and prepare for the future with particular emphasis on engaging young women.
While United Methodist Women of Indiana faces the challenges of declining mission giving and vacancies in key leadership positions at the district and local levels, we remain committed to our mission of turning faith, hope and love into action for women, children and youth. Our Loving God has brought us together to serve and live our mission for such a time as this.
Reflecting on the Year
Here are a some of the things that inspire me:
The October issue of response magazine, opens with an article by National President, Shannon Priddy, about walking in purpose with United Methodist Women. On the final page is a “Litany for the Brokenhearted” written by Mary Thom-ason Smith. Both of these women represent the Indiana Conference. United Methodist Women of Indiana has talent. .
3 young emerging leaders will be attending Leadership Development Days in St Louis.
We celebrated 5 new units at the Annual Celebration and since the meeting another women’s group has expressed an interest in forming a unit.
Many first timers attended Annual Celebration.
Bishop Trimble proudly proclaimed at the Annual Celebration that he is a United Methodist Women. His commitment is evident as he has walked along side United Methodist Women in leading transformative education and public witness.
The dedicated work of the staff and board of the Lucille Raines Residence evidenced by changed hearts and lives.
Feeling the presence of God… in meetings, at gatherings, retreats and events.
Moving Forward
As we move forward together in 2017
Remember our purpose. Why do we exist?
Reflect on our blessings
Rejoice in the future
Never, never, never, never give up
If we are not together, the body of Christ is not complete.
1 Corinthians 1:4-5 Common English Bible (CEB) I thank my God always for you, because of God’s grace that was given to you in Christ Jesus.
5 That is, you were made rich through him in everything: in all your communication and every kind of
knowledge,
Love, Light and Peace,

November 2016
Mission Messenger Serving Women with a Purpose
If you attended the Annual Meeting in Kokomo at Grace United Methodist Church,
you had an opportunity to Grow in Blessedness! Terry Grotenhuis and the UMW ladies
along with their helpmates showered us with blessedness.
On Friday night, Jeff Newton, the director of Kokomo Urban Outreach, and his help-
ers joined us for supper. After supper, he spoke to us about his program and provided
us with three projects for the women to participate in. We could package soap, clean
shelves or sort canned goods that had hurriedly been moved when the tornado came
through Kokomo this past summer. The ladies jumped right in and made it a fun time
working together.
We had the opportunity of hearing Andris Salter, who is Assistant General Secretary
for International and National Ministries with Women, Children and Youth and Dea-
coness and Home Missioner Office. She spoke on Child and Maternal Health.
Our new bishop, Julius Trimble, installed our officers and served communion. He also
spoke about his passion for missions and acknowledged he was a United Methodist
Woman!
I am sure all the District Annual Meetings have also been an additional blessedness as
you participated in the business of electing officers and meeting the demands of your
district. Thank you for spreading the love of God and that blessedness that He so will-
ingly gives.
Your district officers will have received their training on November 5th. When the time
comes for them to train the units in their district, be sure to encourage and send each
officer from your church. That is one of the things that makes this organization so
great and the reason we will be celebrating 150 years in 2019.
September’s Prayer Calendar features Rachel Gabler, a missionary in the Congo. She
wrote: “The babies cry indigently when they get their vaccination. They don't know
they are blessed. Sometimes our Father's blessings don't seem like blessings right away.
We don't know how blessed we are.” Know you are blessed! Be a blessing to others!
Shalom,

SPIRITUAL GROWTH
It is hard to believe that 2016 is nearly history. We have “Played at the Feet of Jesus”
and taken time to “Be still …” (Psalm 46:10). Prayers that you are making time to do
both!
Now to 2017! Rev. Mary Kathryn Pearce, District Superintendent in the Illinois Great
River Conference, will be leading the January and April Spiritual Growth Retreats.
(Registration forms for both are in this newsletter.) She will be using the theme “The
Listening Heart” and scriptures Matthew 5:44-45 and Mark 12:29 (CEB). The Silent
Retreat will be at Sarto House in Evansville October 27-29. The registration form will
be available in January.
Mark your calendar and be sure to check the registration deadline for the Retreat or Re-
treats you plan to attend.
I am finishing my 2016 Reading Program with Growing Up Muslim. It is a youth book
under Education for Mission in the 2014 Reading Program. I am finding this a good
book and easy reading about Islam. If you would like to learn more what it means to
be a Muslim and the world’s second-largest faith, Islam, I recommend it.
May you and yours have a blessed Thanksgiving and Christmas!
Blessings,

It’s November already and our thoughts turn to Thanksgiving (and don’t we have so much to be
thankful for?) and Christmas (again, don’t we have so much to be thankful for as we celebrate the birth
of our Savior?). United Methodist Women are organized to bring faith, hope, and love to the world, and
to women, children, and youth, in particular.
So how are we doing in fulfilling our purpose? I guess my question is really “How am I doing?” I strive
to ask this every day to hold myself accountable not only to our purpose, but also to Micah 6:8…”to seek
justice, to love kindness, to walk humbly with my God.” It is a verse that I have clung to for many years
in my faith journey. It doesn’t mean that my life is filled with busyness, but it is filled with a desire to be
guided by the One who loves me and redeems me.
Do you have a favorite verse that guides you? Do you regularly hold yourself accountable? Prayerfully
consider doing this often.
So how are we doing in fulfilling our financial commitments? Through September’s giving we have
fulfilled 44.5% of our pledge to National. We have three months to fulfil the remaining 55.5%. Our
giving to Lucille Raines Residence is over $12,000 less than at this time last year. If you are not giving
$10 per member, please do so and work hard to get the word out to others. The Raines staff works hard
to provide excellent services within the funding they have but it does get difficult when we wait until
year end to provide our support. Please don’t wait until the last minute to make your donations.
Women, children, and youth the world over are counting on your help.

“Emptying the Treasury” at the End of the Year
The monies given for United Methodist Women are given for mission. However, a local group may discover, toward
the end of a given year, that it has more money than it needs to carry it into the first few months of the new year. A
local group should keep in its treasury only the minimum amount necessary to carry it into the first few months of
the next year, until members’ Mission Giving pledges and gifts begin coming in.
The committee on finance recommends how to use these extra funds. The committee could choose one of the
following options:
1. Send the extra funds as additional mission funds (added to your Pledge to Mission).
2. Present one or more Special Mission Recognitions or Gifts to Mission to members or friends of the unit.
3. Make a supplementary gift to “A Brighter Future for Children and Youth,” a mission program that receives United
Methodist Women National Office funding.
Funds given in these ways to “empty the treasury” should be sent to the district treasurer. The act of emptying the
treasury is important because the funds were given to be used for mission, not to build up a bank account for the
unit. Saving for a later rainy day is not good stewardship since today is a rainy day for thousands of women, children
and youth for whom our mission money offers hope.

Grateful to be a United Methodist Woman!
As I sit here on a Sunday afternoon looking out the window at another beautiful fall day, I can’t help but
give thanks for United Methodist Women. Attending the Eighth Annual Fall Conference Meeting and Cel-
ebration at Kokomo Grace UMC was an amazing and inspiring time with 160 women who have a heart for
missions! Taking part in the hands-on projects with Kokomo Urban Outreach, singing and worshiping with
fellow sisters in Christ, sharing meals, giving and getting warm hugs, hearing Andris Salter tell how Na-
tional Office is sending out hard-earned mission funds to needy women, children and youth around the
world, hearing Bishop Trimble give his support and encouragement to United Methodist Women, learning
how youth and young adults are having life-changing experiences with the help of the Youth and Young
Adult Scholarships, hearing the testimony of a former resident of Lucille Raines and how his life was
changed thanks to United Methodist Women, hearing from North Central Jurisdiction and so much more,
was unforgettable. As we ended our time together by taking communion together, I was filled with grati-
tude and thankful for the opportunity to serve Jesus in this way. My prayer is that all United Methodist
Women continue to be inspired by the Holy Spirit and feel the blessings of serving; “
For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.”

The District/Local Officer Form was due November 1st, but included in the back of
this newsletter in case it slipped your mind. If you have not forwarded this infor-
mation to your District Secretary and the Conference Directory Coordinator, please
do this ASAP! We don’t want you to miss out on any important communication in
2017!!
Autumn Greetings, my sisters! It was a joy to hear so many of your voices lifted in song at the annual meeting. November brings us another opportunity to praise God in song. I invite you to choose your favorite Thanksgiving hymn and use the words as part of your devotions. There are many great hymns available to use, or you might prefer to use the words of a more modern or contemporary song. One of my favorites is a song our chancel choir is now rehearsing, “Thankful” by Carole Bayer Sager, David Foster and Richard Page. Its words remind us “it’s up to us to be the change, and even though we all can still do more, there’s so much to be thankful for.” Autumn Blessings, Pat Hoover, Conference Music Coordinator 574-223-5533 [email protected]
Committee on Nominations
My time as Chair of the Committee on Nominations is winding down. It has been a very busy two years. I must say it has been very rewarding. A great big thank you goes out to everyone that has said yes when asked about the opportunity to serve as an officer for the Conference Leadership Team! If you hear a little voice in your head nudging you about serving, give it serious thought. Kathy White has graciously accepted the opportunity to be the Chair for the Committee on Nominations for 2017-18. To help make her job easier, please step up and say "yes, I would be glad to serve." I have one more year to serve on the committee, so I will see you around. In Christ's Love, Martha Lewis, Chair of CON This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs' of God's people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God. 2 Cor. 9:12

Education and Interpretation
Happy Fall everyone! I just love the colors of fall that God shares with us!
I know this is a very busy time for all of us but I hope you take a few minutes each day to just look
around and thank God for all his beauty!
Our year is coming to a close and we need to begin preparing for 2017! The local units need to complete
their 2016 Mission Today forms now. Our 2017 Mission Today form will be the same as this year’s form.
We are going to add some explanations and suggestions to clarify the areas that have confused some
units. Feel free to do your planning by referring to the 2016 form. The 2017 form will be available online
and in the 1st newsletter of the new year.
The 2017 Youth/Young Adult Scholarship applications are online and in this newsletter – PLEASE
spread the word!

PROGRAM RESOURCES
It was great to see many of you at our Annual Meeting at
Grace UMC in Kokomo in October. Hopefully you were able to find materials that will be helpful as you finish programs
for 2016 and plan for 2017. If you did not find what you wanted, call or order online items from Mission Resources
(1-800-305-9857, www.umwmissionresources.org). Also, check out many sources for Reading Program books including Amazon, box stores
and your local libraries. At our spiritual growth retreats in January and April, there
will be another opportunity to purchase books and supplies.
As you finish your reading for the 2016 calendar year, please remember to turn in your reading list to your local SPR or another officer by the end of December
or very early January. Your local SPR or officer should then turn in composite lists for the entire unit to your district SPR by the end of January. As soon as the district SPR
has these lists, they can be compiled and sent to me. Let’s all work together to make
this process work smoothly!
It is not too late to finish or add to your Reading Program plans for 2016. A couple of books that I have read recently from the 2016 reading list I found to be
very meaningful. Not Worth Saving by Ann L. Joyner, a Nurturing for Community choice, is the an inspiring account told by Ann Joyner of raising, nurturing, and
fighting for her severely handicapped boy and the impact that her child had on those
who were a part of his life. Matthew’s life inspired a special needs ministry at the Church of the Resurrection in Kansas City and that ministry inspired other churches
across the country to create similar ministries.
Coffee, Tea, and Holy Water, an Education for Mission choice, by Amanda Hud-son is an account of her travels to Brazil, Wales, Tanzania, China, and Honduras to
experience the culture and find out how Christianity is practiced in those countries.
This book is both a travel log and journal in of Amanda’s experiences, thoughts and reflections as she took this incredible journey.
If you have questions, comments, or favorite books you would like to share,
please contact me. I hope to see you at one of our spiritual growth retreats in 2017.

From the United Methodist Women National President
Dear Sisters in Christ,
Thank you, United Methodist Women of Indiana, for the gifts you have given me. Thank you for
your support and prayers. I have been called to the opportunity of a lifetime and I am truly
grateful.
Fall has arrived! Let us rejoice in cooler weather, colorful leaves, and a time to gather family and
friends as we thank God for the year behind and pray for guidance for the year ahead of us.
We are entering a new quadrennial for the church and for United Methodist Women. These next
four years will bring a world gathering at Assembly in Columbus, OH in 2018 and celebrating 150
years of United Methodist Women in 2019. Are you ready? Are we ready? We are-together.
You will continue to hear me say we need to share our stories and our successes. How do women
know they want to be part of United Methodist Women if they don’t know what we do? We need
to be intentional about inviting women to join our circles and local units. Have you shared your
story with your Sunday school class, or your book club?
We are a connectional organization. Let’s connect!
Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas, Shannon Priddy

Social Action Get ready for Super Bowl LI, for we have launched this year’s Intercept the Traffickers campaign! Have you ever been in a box, not knowing how you were going to get out? Or maybe you have felt in need of protec-tion, of a hand to reach inside the box to help you out. Those victimized by human trafficking can also feel as though they are in a box. The causes of trafficking are complex, but at its root is a globalized economy resulting in poverty that contributes to joblessness, inequality, discrimination and violence around the world. Children and youth are at risk of traffickers because of homelessness, the lack of stability in their living situations, fos-ter care or a juvenile justice system that often criminalizes instead of providing a safe harbor. Women and girls fall prey to traffickers who take advantage of their economic and social vulnerabilities by promising a job, education, or better life. We can never prevent all the exploitation of traffickers or their control over the lives of those they traffic, but we can intercept them. We can stop the treatment of people as cargo or commodities. Boxes can be opened. We can be the hands that lift the trafficked out of the box of their oppressors into a place where souls are fed and a new life exists. In doing so, we all will be transformed. We are called to listen to the mandate of our faith to help the vulnerable. Between now and January 29, 2017, take a picture of your United Methodist Women's group with your boxes. For instructions, handouts and ideas, please vis-it www.unitedmethodistwomen.org/intercept. La Donna Weber, Mission Coordinator for Social Action, C (260) 444-8036, [email protected]

A Few Words from the Communications Coordinator….Let’s Share, Share, SHARE!
I had the good fortune to get to spend some time a few weeks ago with some GREAT ladies at the leadership training
workshop, but the BEST part of it was meeting with several of the 2017 district communications coordinators. We focused on
how we could anticipate our district’s newsletter content for 2017 and plan for the year. I am finishing the 2nd year of my
term as Conference Communications Coordinator and said YES to 2 more years partly because I get so much enjoyment from
the opportunity to help such great district counterparts...but also because I feel like I am finally getting into the swing of my
role! Yes, there’s a learning curve and I am grateful to others saying YES to engage in this role at the district level.
So, who’s responsible for making sure “Suzy Smith, UMW member at the local unit in Nameyourtown, Indiana” is
aware of the opportunities for Indiana women in our conference, district, and local units? Answer: EVERYONE! If you are
aware of it, it is your responsibility to share it. Why would we want to keep all this good stuff to ourselves? At one time,
someone shared it with me and I am so grateful for that. Perhaps that I why this role appealed to me so much. The role of the
communications coordinator is to SHARE the information provided to her. However, we cannot share the things we are not
provided.
So, for 2017, I challenge every conference officer to provide SOMETHING to me for the Mission Messenger, the news-
letter of Indiana Conference United Methodist Women. I also challenge every district officer to do the same for their district
newsletter. Now, let me go a step further: every local unit president needs to make sure this information from the conference
and district reaches the membership! I believe that is the key to an engaged membership: information! If the information
does not reach the membership at the local level, we only have ourselves to blame for ladies saying “I had no idea” or “I wish I
had known about the retreats” or “I would have liked to have gone to xxxx.” I wish I had participated in events like the re-
treats sooner in life because I enjoy them so much!
Now, will everyone be interested in every event? No. But let’s get the information to Suzy Smith from a local unit in
Nameyourtown, Indiana. Let’s let her choose if it is something she wants to experience. Her life, like mine, may never be the
same! So, my mantra for 2017 is “Let’s Share, Share, SHARE!” We have talked a lot over the past few years about sharing our
stories...but let’s go a step further and share what opportunities United Methodist Women of Indiana Conference has to offer
ALL women: spiritual growth retreats, silent retreat, Mission u, Legislative Day as well as the awareness of national and global
efforts to bring about awareness and change in issues facing women and children. This organization has too much to offer to
keep to ourselves! Tomorrow’s leadership is in our midst….but have we engaged her?
How do we reach her? At the very least, share the newsletters via email, USPS mail, on a bulletin board. Call her on
the phone if you aren’t going to be seeing her soon. Text her about an upcoming event. Direct her to the website. Print off
the flyer for an upcoming event and give it to her. The options are endless. Get creative! Share, share, SHARE!
In this season of Thanksgiving, be grateful for who shared UMW with you. If able, call her, email her, mail her a letter
and simply say “thank you for sharing.” How has your life been touched by her doing that? Then, let that motivate you to do
the same.
Felicia Stewart, Communications Coordinator, [email protected], cell (317) 341-2053
Don’t forget all the information available on our website!
You can find forms (like the Mission Today form), the most recent Mission
Messenger conference newsletter (in color!), your district’s most recent newslet-
ter, the conference officer list, links to Mission u page and the Lucille Raines
Residence page, etc
It’s all there for you at www.inumc.org/umw!
Come get your information…..then Share, share, SHARE!

Lucille Raines Residence continues the mission of rebuilding lives. By being a
member of Indiana Conference UMW you are part owner of this wonderful ad-
venture! Your prayers, gifts, and actions contribute to the saving grace of those
who are getting their lives put back together after getting clean and sober. The
Board of Directors spent October 17th -19th at Lucille Raines. What used to be
called “Takeover”, because we take over for the staff and let them get away for
a few days, has now become known as “RainesFest”, and it is surely a festival.
We prepare great homemade meals, play games, provide items at the Country
Store for residents to purchase with “fun money” they earn for participating,
and most importantly, get to know the residents. The crazy auction seems to be
a favorite and it always is a hilarious end to both evenings. If you contributed
items for this event I want to tell you every gift is truly appreciated.
Lowe’s has partnered with us in their Heroes Program and they are going to repair and repaint the lobby walls and install new carpet in the lobby, all at no charge! This all came about because a District Manager from Lowe’s stopped by our Lucille Raines booth at the spring Flower and Patio Show, so you never know what will happen when you tell the Raines story. Lowe’s plans on completing this project in early De-cember so the Residents at Raines will have a lovely home for Christmas. An-other generous donation will cover the cost of reupholstering the TV room fur-niture so the entire lobby area will have a new look and feel. Other Faithful friends of Raines have remodeled the ladies rooms and deep cleaned the kitch-ens. We are so grateful for the acts of kindness that show our residents the love of Jesus. We would like to have Lowe’s install carpet on the upstairs hall and the conference room upstairs, but Lowe’s can’t cover that expense. If you would like to help pay for that cost please send your donation through your local unit and mark it as special giv-ing for carpet or as needed. I am just so excited to see all the improvements take place!
Do you shop on Amazon.com? If so, do you know they have a program called AmazonSmile where they donate a percentage of your purchase to the charity you choose? Please go online to your account and select Lucille Raines Residence as your charity, then start in AmazonSmile when you are shopping. It doesn’t cost you anything. Spread the word to your church families, friends and relatives before they start Christmas shopping online.
As you think about year-end please consider Lucille Raines Residence. We run on a very tight budget and we are
always in need of making repairs and updating rooms. Your gifts do make a difference and we appreciate each and
every dollar.

MEMBERSHIP, NURTURE AND OUTREACH
It’s that time of year to count our blessings again and look forward to 2017!
Our first blessing is to congratulate three 2016 Limitless attendees who said “Yes” to
attending our Leadership Development Days this month, Teah Aldred-Ash who will be
our 2017 Young Women’s Coordinator, Marrissa Taylor and Errin Weisman all agreed
to experience United Methodist Women on a national level. Also, in the Southwest Dis-
trict both Kate Renkema and Lyndy Floyd were part of their Annual Meeting telling
the Limitless Story as was Stephanie Dickinson, Bloomington First, where she present-
ed “All Worthy of Love,” an Indianapolis Outreach Program she first learned about at
Limitless.
Secondly, our Indiana Conference welcomed five new units in 2016, a second blessing.
Please join me in welcoming into your district: Linton First, West District; New Hope,
North Central District; Ossian, Northeast District; South Clay County, and Sullivan
County Clusters both West District.
A third blessing for our Indiana Conference is that we were part of a much larger pic-
ture that was successful in completing our first online 2015 Census Report with 386
units, totaling 9,652 members! We are fortunate to be part of an 800,000 member, faith
-based organization, which is the largest in the world!
A fourth blessing is… our 2016 Census is online now and ready for local presidents.
Enter http://www.unitedmethodistwomen.org/census2016 and the 2016 Census will
pop up. The rest is easy, but be certain to use your final membership number of 2015
for your beginning 2016 count. IF you wish to change your data before March 30, 2017,
click reset and you may reenter it again!
Lastly, National wishes to know more about us, so every member in our Indiana Con-
ference is being asked to complete the http://www.unitedmethodistwomen.org/myumw
membership form also. It is much like the Census but National, in an attempt to learn
more about us, has added additional questions. With 2018 Assembly approaching, our
staff and national Leaders want to know who we are and how best to serve us. So, host
a gathering of members at your home or the library to assist those who may not be “as
techy” in order that all of our voices may be heard and don’t forget to count each other
as a BLESSING too…

Mission u 2017
Page 13 Mission Messenger Serving Women with a Purpose
Dear Sisters in Christ,
My name is Barbara King and I am honored to be the Dean of Mission u. I have attended Mission u
for many years and even taught the children for three years. My husband and I have been married
nearly 47 years. We are the parents of two adult children, one of whom lives with us. Both of our
granddaughters are currently living with us as they attend school – one at Ivy Tech Community Col-
lege and the other at Lincoln Tech. Not too many dull moments at the King house! I am active in
my local UMW unit where I am currently treasurer and Secretary of Program Resources. I also teach
the children on Sunday mornings and am a part of our puppet ministry.
So, what is Mission u? It is:
M – mission opportunities
I – issue studies
S – singing and sunshine (it is held in mid-July!)
S – supportive fellowship
I – inspirational study leaders
O – occasions to learn and laugh
N – new developments in United Methodist Women and new friends
u-- time to Uplift women, children, & youth throughout the world
Mission u is four days of learning; of fellowship with other United Methodist Women from around the
state; new friends and spending time with people you have known for years; and, it is a time to learn
more about our missions and mission opportunities. July 18 – 21, 2017, will find our Mission u at De-
Pauw University. This year all the construction will be complete! All of our sessions will be held in
what remains of the HUB (ballroom area) and new classroom area and in the new Hoover Hall which
houses the new cafeteria and several more class areas. Sampler Day will be Saturday, July 22. Our
studies this year are:
Spiritual Growth – Living as a Covenant Community. Here we will examine the major covenants
throughout the Bible and what they reveal about God’s character and eternal love for us. We will dis-
cover that covenantal living calls us to acts of mercy and justice. Through covenantal living, we are
connected to God and the whole creation.
Topical Issue – Climate Justice. This study will deepen our understanding and awareness of climate
change and its impact on God’s creation. It highlights justice, peace, and integrity of creation as im-
portant dimensions of partnering in God’s mission today. Participants will learn how their own ac-
tions contribute to climate change and what they can do to positively affect the environment.
Geographical Study – Missionary Conferences of the UMC in the United States. This is the sto-
ry of the three missionary conferences of the United Methodist Church: Alaska United Methodist
Conference, Red Bird Missionary Conference, and the Oklahoma Indian Missionary Conference. We
will learn about the history and how each conference is founded as well as how they add to the rich-
ness of the United Methodist connection in the United States.
The registration form, along with a listing of the Study Leaders should be out in February. Watch
your mail boxes! I hope to see each of you in Greencastle in July!
