School district registration changes could help eliminate long lineups and give everyone a fair chance to register for a school of choice, said a board trustee.

Currently, parents can queue up for hours, and even days, to increase their chances of get-ting their child into a school of choice, two or which are offered in Mission — a traditional model

at Hillside elementary, and an arts-based curriculum at Edwin S. Richards. French Immersion is offered at Christine Morrison and Mission Central.

The current system isn’t fair to single parents or those who can’t take time away from work to camp out, said trustee Jim Tay-lor, who is examining Langley’s model.

There, parents can sign up their child for a school as soon as they

have a birth certificate, Taylor ex-plained. “This started 25 years ago with their fundamental school, which is equivalent to a tradi-tional school. The idea is it saves line ups.”

Early registration also helps the school district plan for classes.

Children with siblings already in the school will be admitted first, followed by students who registered earliest.

Parents determined to get their

child in a certain school, will sign up right away, and someone who’s less dedicated will sign up later, Taylor noted. “The further in ad-vance people think about it, the better chance they have of getting in.”

Those who don’t get in receive a phone call and will be given a choice to stay on the list, said Taylor, who suspects there will still be a lineup in the first year. Alternatively, parents can pre-reg-

ister their child on sign up day ina lottery system and district staffcan randomly draw names untilclasses are full.

Sam Mellace has the perfect set-up for his medical marijuana grow-op. In the back-woods of Mission, the large lot is wooded and private. He has no neighbours. There’s only one road in, which he monitors.

For the past decade, Mellace has been legally growing pot for personal use on agri-cultural land under Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD) jurisdic-tion.

But his operation is at risk. FVRD is con-sidering banning grow-ops from farm land, relegating them to an industrial zoning.

For Mellace, moving is not an option.

“I’ll fight this tooth and nail. There isn’t anything here that’s not done to code, and I’ll show you. Securi-ty-wise, nobody has this kind of security,” Mellace told Black Press during a tour of his property in October.

Mellace is a long-time marijuana activ-ist who has influenced a growing list of reg-ulations surrounding medical marijuana use and production.

The possibility that FVRD would ban his operation on his agri-cultural land has thrown a wrench into his expansion plans. He has postponed his application to Health Canada for a licence to grow pot commer-cially because he fears such a permit would require him to move to an industrial park.

FVRD is leaning towards permitting grow-ops only on land zoned for industrial use, following a prece-dent set by Chilliwack in August. When new federal rules that ban grow-ops in private homes go into effect in April 2014, medical

marijuana operations in Chilliwack will be permitted in special industrial zones only, in the same class as s l a u g h t e r h o u s e s , asphalt manufacturers, and sewage treatment plants.

The concern with allowing farm land to be used for grow-ing medical marijuana are the potential odour and security risks. Some have also argued that it is unfair to give agricultural land-re-lated tax breaks to pot growers.

On the other side of the argument is Mel-lace. During Black Press’ tour, Mellace’s complex was nearly odourless. The only exception was a mild smell of pot surround-ing the building where buds dry.

When it comes to security, Mellace argues that in an industrial facility he would be at much higher risk.

The complex itself has ground sensors, alarms, cameras, and m o t i o n - a c t i v a t e d lights.

An eight-foot barbed wire fence surrounds the land, and there is a separate fence for the building housing the approximately 600

plants. At times of high production, there are guard dogs and armed security.

Mellace worries he won’t be able to keep such tight control of the complex in an industrial area, espe-cially if his location is publicly known.

Mellace supports closing grow-ops in residential areas, and moving them to regu-lated locations that are known to RCMP and Health Canada. His current set-up fits this criteria, he said.

FVRD will consider zoning of medical marijuana at the next electoral area services committee on Nov. 13 at 1 p.m. in Chilli-wack. Mellace said he is applying to be a del-egate at the meeting in order to present his case.

The federal govern-ment is phasing out the rules that allow private users to grow pot in their homes, the licence under which Mellace has been operating since 2002. Instead, pot will be grown in fac-tory farms monitored by the RCMP and public health inspectors. The first licences to oper-ate such farms have already been granted.

Grower vows to fight FVRD pot zoning

Sam Mellace has had a medical grow-op in Mission for 10 years and is concerned about the Fraser Valley Regional District’s proposed plan to ban the operations from farm land.

OCTOBER MELANCHOLY

As the days grow shorter and the leaves turn color and fall languidly from the trees, there is a peculiar melancholy which we are susceptible to at this time of year. October days are tinged with sadness and a sense of loss at the end of another summer, and yet this is combined with a feeling that the beauty of a crisp autumn day under a clear blue sky somehow redeems the loss of summer. The last monarch butterflies wearily flapping their exhausted wings, the flocks of geese heading south, and the vibrant colors of the leaves all presage a time of dormancy, when we will hunker down for the long, cold winter. Everyone probably has a favorite season of the year, but being able to enjoy each one with its different qualities is a blessing from God. And, perhapsthis October melancholy is God’s way of telling us to start conserving our energy. If we’ve been diligent all summer, and the harvest is plentiful, then just maybe, with the Lord’s blessing, we’ll make it through the coming winter, and live to seeanother glorious Spring.

Go to the ant, o sluggard:consider her ways, and be wise.

Without having any chief, officer or ruler, she prepares her food in summer,

and gathers her sustenance in harvest.

would be sustainable, explained Hillside prin-cipal Kathryn Day.

There are now 76 stu-dents who are ready to start kindergarten in September 2014 at Hill-side. That will fill more than three classrooms. Normally, registrations don’t begin until Feb. 1 and administrators don’t start planning staff levels for the fol-lowing year until the spring.

Day believes parents have signed their kids up early because some

have older children at-tending the school, and others are worried the spots will be taken.

Both Hillside and Edwin S. Richards ac-cept students from across the district and beyond.

“We don’t have a community catchment,” said Day.

Given the school has already been taking reg-istrations, Day doesn’t expect long line ups for the traditional school in February.

Like Hillside, E.S. Richards, was turned into a school of choice

this year but families weren’t given the op-tion to register early. Those who had hoped to send youngsters to their neighbourhood school were disappoint-ed to learn the catch-ment has changed and they are required to sign up like every-one else who wants a school of choice. There are no guarantees they will get in.

“They’re the ones we’re hearing from who are the least happy,” acknowledged Taylor, who pointed out none of the schools of choice

are more than a kilome-tre or two from another school. “Those parents are in agony now and it’s not right to keep them in limbo.”

Trustees were pre-sented with regis-tration options at a school board meeting last week. Other meth-ods discussed were an online registrations, phone-ins, and a lottery system.

The issue will be dis-cussed again at the ed-ucational committee meeting in November which include parents.

OPINION Published & printed by Black Press Ltd. at 33047 First Avenue, Mission V2V 1G2

Last week’s BC Shakeout offered residents another reminder of the importance of emergency planning.

The premise for the annual drill is an earthquake, but the lessons don’t end there. They underline the need for a planned response to any emer-gency.

This year’s event, part of a nationwide earthquake drill, drew nearly 700,000 partici-pants in B.C. At precisely 10:17 Thursday morning, partici-pants “ducked, covered and hung on” in a simulation of proper earthquake response.

If participation was high in

this province, it’s because the West Coast is a likely candidate for a major earthquake. Experts agree it’s not a question of if, but when. Indeed, in the past 70 years there have been more than 100 earthquakes off the coast of Vancouver Island that had a magnitude of five or greater.

Being prepared for a major quake is not only prudent, it’s proactive. Last week’s drill not only emphasized how to react when an earthquake strikes, but also what to do when the ground stops shaking.

And that’s perhaps the most important lesson: An effective

response means proper plan-ning for the 72 hours following a major incident, regardless of what kind.

Even more minor events are made better by a little plan-ning. It’s a simple process, and there are ample resources to help show what you and your family will need to cope in the critical 72 hours following an incident of any kind.

The bottom line is that you’re mother was right: It’s better to be safe, than sorry.

More than 32 cats reside at humane society shelterEditor, The Record:

As a long time Mis-sion resident and vol-unteer for the Fraser Valley Humane Soci-ety, I would like to commend Mission council for supporting the shelter with emer-gency funds. I think it is important, however, to clear up some mis-conceptions that were brought up during the Oct. 21 meeting.

One councillor stated that, with only 32 cats, the cost per cat per month is $250, but there are many more cats in the soci-ety’s care than that. The FVHS spays, neu-ters and vet checks all cats and kittens in its care then takes great pains to adopt them into loving homes. The vacant spots are then filled from a long wait-ing list. They are also responsible for many cats in foster care in

addition to the numer-ous kittens and cats that are dropped off at the shelter at vari-ous times throughout the year. Occasionally, the number of cats in care goes way up, such as when the Willows apartments tragically burned down and the FVHS was called upon to take in many cats that were suddenly homeless in order to give their owners a chance to get back on their feet.

Another concern was the executive director’s salary and an unfounded accu-sation of “spending out of control” when nothing could be fur-ther from the truth. What the figures don’t show is the thou-sands of dollars that are saved by building good working relation-ships with local vets and other area busi-

nesses, resulting in a significant reduction in shelter expenses every year. These sav-ings include grants to pay for much-needed upgrades such as new, roomier cages, paint and construc-tion materials, as well as reduced costs on food, litter and other supplies. The shelter itself is spotless and extremely well run.

Last year, a prov-ince-wide outbreak of ringworm afflicted many Lower Mainland cat shelters, including the SPCA. The diffi-cult decision to close the shelter until all cats and kittens were cleared of the fun-gus resulted in four months with almost no income. Executive director Celia Durst kept the place going during this time.

You would be hard pressed to find another

manager who could keep a charity on such a meagre budget going for as long as she has under such difficult circumstances. In fact, she may be a victim of her own success by keeping expenses arti-ficially low. All of this puts staff wages much lower than 40 per cent and in line with other non-profits.

Just as I would not want to live in a city that did not have parks, a leisure centre or a library, I would not want to live in a city that did not have a humane animal care facility.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEThe BC Winter Games have been a sports tradition in our province since 1978 and for many promising athletes, it is an important step towards competing in the Canada Games and other prestigious national and international events including the Olympic Games. Inspiring athletes like Mission’s very own Olympic medalist Brent Hayden.

In February 2014, the BC Winter Games are coming to Mission and we couldn’t be more proud and excited to host this wonderful event. The Games will bring approximately 2,000 athletes, coaches and officials to our city and we want to make sure we’re ready to provide them with a warm, friendly welcome and the best Games experience possible.

With so much to do in preparation, our current focus is on building a strong base of volunteers who will support all aspects of the Games. Almost 700 people have already signed up to volunteer and by February we are anticipating more than 2,000 volunteers will be on board to help bring the Games to life. We have a wide variety of volunteer positions available to suit the talents and interests of everyone. Some of the areas we need volunteers for include: registration, results processing, event hosting, bus guides, dorm hosts, assisting at competitions, food services, security, traffic control, marshalling, general cleanup and site patrols. If you’re interested in volunteering, but don’t know exactly what you’d like to do, no worries, simply get in touch and we will be sure to find the perfect position for you.

While Mission will be the official host community for this celebration of BC’s best athletes, the excitement of the games isn’t limited to Mission. Events will be taking place throughout the Lower Mainland with competitions in Abbotsford, Walnut Grove, Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, Hemlock Resort and even the Callaghan Valley. With that in mind, if you have friends or family that live in any of our venue areas we hope you will encourage them to get involved and support the Games as well.

Hosting the BC Winter Games will bring many positive and lasting benefits to Mission. In addition to the economic benefits and community spirit that will undoubtedly be a result, building an experienced group of community-minded volunteers is sure to have a huge positive effect on the community for years to come. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to make a difference in your community and have fun doing it! For more information on volunteering visit the Mission 2014 BC Winter Games website http://www.bcgames.org/Games/BCWinterGames.aspx or stop by our office at 32386 Fletcher Avenue.

Thank you for your support.

Carol AunMISSION RECORD

Mission will be the stage for the 2014 BC Winter Games. Thou-sands of visitors will have a significant impact on local busi-nesses, said Games president Brian Anton-son at the Chamber of Commerce luncheon earlier this month.

“In 2008, a study was done that showed Kimberly/Cranbrook enjoyed a $1.8 mil-lion impact due to the Games. Another study is being done with the Mission Games, and naturally we’re hoping for an even better result for our area,” he said.

More than 2,000 of volunteers are needed to make the Games a success, and there are numerous ways local business can help.

By becoming Friends of the Games and sup-porting events, you can help build the legacy that will be left behind.

“There are two ele-ments to the legacy,” explained Antonson.

One is financial and the other is the creation of a culture of volun-teerism in the commu-nity.

About $120,000 stayed in Vernon at the last Winter Games in 2012, according to Antonson.

Past events have shown that once people experience volunteer-ing, they will want to do it again, and with more than 2,000 help-ers, there will be a last-ing impact on Mission groups, associations, and the community.

The next Games event is the torch light-ing at the Leisure Cen-tre Nov. 16. Festivities begin at noon.

The 2014 BC Winter Games takes place Feb. 20-23.

As he lined up for a potential game-win-ning field goal with 2.4 seconds left in the fourth quarter on Satur-day, Wayde Carpenter’s hands were shaking.

But his right foot wasn’t, and he con-nected from 32 yards out to lift the Mission Roadrunners senior football squad to a 24-21 comeback win over the Rick Hansen Hurricanes.

“I was really nervous,” Carpenter admitted. “But I kicked it, and it went right through. Happiest moment of my life right now.”

Quarterback Evan Horton threw TD passes to Carpenter and Day-ton Robertson – and a crucial two-point con-vert to Jesse Walker – and ran for a major himself as the Roadrun-ners rallied from a 21-7 third-quarter deficit.

Members of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 57, Albert (Knobby) Clark and Ethel Beckingham, remember the sacrifi ces made, especially by comrades, on Remembrance Day.

Local legion members honour Nov. 11Royal Canadian Legion branches across the country are busy preparing for Remembrance Day and raising funds through poppy sales to support their local community. In Mission, the Nov. 11 ceremonies begin with a parade at 10:15 a.m. from Ecole Des Deux-Rives (near the corner of Seventh Avenue and Stave Lake Street) to the Clarke Theatre on Prentis Avenue. Everyone is invited to take part in the official ceremonies at 10:40 a.m. inside the theatre. Wreaths will be laid at the cenotaph outside the local legion on Logan Avenue following the ceremony.Remembrance Day has a special place in many Canadians’ hearts, and it’s a day Branch 57 legion members Ethel Beckingham and Albert (Knobby) Clark will never forget.Clark was just 16 years old when he volunteered to join the paratroopers in 1943. Knobby, as he is

fondly known as, was considered too small to be in the group, but that didn’t stop him. In fact, he wanted to join so much, he had two teeth pulled just before his dental exam. A paratrooper couldn’t have any fillings because the change in atmospheric pressure could cause them to burst, he explained. Once Clark completed his basic paratrooper training, he was immediately posted oversees to the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion, serving in England and northwest Europe. Clark’s battalion served in arguably four of the most famous battle areas of WWII: Normandy, Ardennes, Rhine and Elbe.Clark does not speak much about Normandy, offering simply that “it was very loud.” The battalion members were the first ones that parachuted into Normandy on D Day, June 6, 1944, shortly after midnight and fought continuously until the

beginning of September when the battalion reached the Seine River. The 1st Battalion was rushed into the Belgian Ardennes at the end of December 1944 during bitterly cold weather to help stem the German attack in what became known as the Battle of the Bulge. On March 24, 1945 at 1000 hours, the battalion parachuted across the Rhine River into German territory to attack from behind German troops who were resisting the Allied troops crossing the Rhine. At Elbe, after fighting their way across Germany, the battalion crossed the Elbe River passing many surrendering German soldiers. The battalion raced on to reach the town of Wismar on the Baltic Sea on May 2, 1945, three hours ahead of the Russian army.On May 31, 1945, the battalion was posted to Canada in preparation to engage the Japanese in the Far East, but with Japan’s

surrender, the unit was disbanded. In September 2000, Clark and the rest of the surviving members of the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion were honoured in Alberta, where the four peaks of the Ex Coelis Mountain were named after the four above-mentioned battle areas — the first time this has been done in Canada, added Clark.Clark is still an active man, devoting many volunteer hours to the Mission branch of the Royal Canadian Legion.Ethel Beckingham, who enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1954, is also an outstanding

community builder. Beckingham served as a fighter control officer and communications operator in Quebec, Ontario and Vancouver.Working with the legion, she organizes the essay and poster

contest in Mission schools every year, teaching children about the importance of Remembrance Day.For more information about the Mission legion, visit www.rcl57.org or its Facebook page.

Albert (Knobby) Clark will be a part of the local Remembrance Day ceremonies again this year.

Seniors Living 55 Plus has now successfully been published for six months and many of you may be wondering why and how it came to be.On Nov. 19, 2012, a group of seniors’ organizations met to discuss a better way to communicate with the seniors of Mission and they approached The Record to include a monthly seniors section in the newspaper. The original idea was to have a two page section to connect seniors in the community and to provide options to keep aging adults active. This project has now grown to an eight-page pull out because of the need for such a publication aimed at our growing seniors population. The inaugural edition was published on April 25, 2013 and since then has been included in The Record on the last Thursday of the month and distributed to all Mission homes. Additional copies are circulated to various seniors’ groups and locations around the community. The group meets monthly with Crystal Orchison and Carol Aun from The Record to review the current edition and make plans for future publications. Other

members involved in this project are Gordon Dainard, the facilitator; Ian Graham and Diana Muntigl from Lifetime Learning Centre Society; Felice Clements from Mission Community Services Society; Bryan Fawcett from Mission Seniors Advisory Committee; Bob Ingram and Jean Price from Mission Seniors Centre Association; George Evens from Elder Citizens Action Coalition; and Sophie Zehner and Darlene Bruntlet from Old Age Pensioners Organization.Seniors Living 55 Plus is made possible with the support of the Mission Record and local businesses with their advertising. We acknowledge and thank them for their contribution to this success. If you have events, articles or photos of Mission citizens aged 55-plus living healthy lives through artistic, mental, physical, social and spiritual activities, you can contact Gordon Dainard by e-mail at [email protected] to discuss inclusion in future editions. For advertising opportunities, call Crystal Orchison at 604-851-4444.

Members who put together the Mission Seniors Living 55 Plus feature are (clock-wise from back left): Darlene, Jean, Felice, Sophie, George, Carol, Gordon, Crystal, Diana, Ian and Bob. Missing from the photo is Bryan.

Did you know that close to one in four Canadians wear either complete upper and lower dentures or partials? So what is the best way to keep our dentures clean? Denture cleaning is an integral part to keep your dentures looking and feeling great. If you don’t clean your dentures properly, your smile won’t be as attractive and you may experience bad breath and stained dentures. Dental plaque that adheres to your prosthesis creates biofilm, which is a perfect breeding ground for some very scary bacteria such as MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus

aureus), or drug-resistant staphylococcus aureus bacteria. If this layer of biofilm is not removed on a regular basis, bacteria may be inhaled into your lungs and cause hard to treat lung infections. Plaque on dentures may also calcify and turn into calculus, commonly known as tartar, which needs to be removed by a dental professional. When considering all these potential health risks, daily cleaning of partial or full dentures becomes a very worthwhile and essential task. Many dentures wearers are not sure if they should brush their false teeth during the day or soak them in denture cleaner overnight.

This is my recommendation:• Brush your dentures after every meal to remove biofilm and food particles. Use a moistened denture brush and liquid hand soap or Polident Fresh Cleanse. Do not use regular tooth paste as it will wear away the denture acrylic. • Soak your dentures daily using a professional denture cleaner such as Nu-Dent or Renew to remove plaque deposits and other stains such a coffee, teach and smoke. • Don’t soak your dentures in bleach or other household cleaners as this will damage the acrylic.• An ultrasonic cleaner is the best way to keep your dentures clean. Dentures

are placed in a denture cleaning solution and the ultrasonic action creates tiny air bubbles that lift off stains. Patients who use one regularly comment that their dentures have never felt cleaner. • Remember to rinse dentures thoroughly after soaking to remove traces of the denture cleanser. Do not use hot water to do this as it may warp and damage your dentures. If you wear dentures, do yourself and your mouth a favour and clean your dentures every day.

Clean your dentures daily to avoid potential health risks

How it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fi ll each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can fi gure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numer-ic clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle. Look for the solution in next month’s puzzle section of Living 55 Plus.

Dental Implants gave us a confi dent smile

This couple have something to smile about. They used to wear dentures, which caused discomfort, an inability to eat many foods and a lack of con dence when it came to smiling and talking.

Now they enjoy the freedom of NobelSmile dental implants, which areas close to natural teeth as you can get. People who lose a tooth want to replace it with something permanent, says Dr. Lui, instead of something they have to remove. “Once you give someone new, permanent teeth, you can see their personality shine through again.”

A big part of the RAM brand success has been built on the sturdy and macho exterior styling. ZACK SPENCER

Rounding up and riding the RAM range2014 RAM Roundup

The full-size truck market is big busi-ness for automakers and a big deal for the businesses and people who depend on them. For almost five decades the Ford F-150 has been the best selling truck, with little chance they will lose that crown in the near future. What has been happening, over the last few years, is a strong shift from General Motors to RAM in terms of establishing the second best selling truck brand. The rise in RAM popularity can be traced back to a few key changes over the last several years, from muscular styling to class-leading interiors, a refined ride, plus engine and transmission advance-ments. I drove the 2014 RAM model range recently, on a beautiful fall day, just outside of Toronto. The “RAM Round-up” was a great opportunity to get my hands on these new trucks well before they arrive at BC dealerships.

Looks A big part of the RAM brand success has been built on the sturdy and macho exterior styling. Front and centre is a grille that was enlarged, but better integrated, for the 2013 model year. Depending on the trim the grille finish can be chrome, painted or with a different insert. This feature is one RAM owners love so, in this case, larger

is better. Behind the grille are “active shutters” that close at higher speeds to help send the wind around the vehicle to improve aerodynamic efficiency. The same idea was also behind the longer side step, which helps reduce buffeting down the side of the trucks. One option that I find fascinating, and would seriously consider, is the $1500 air suspension that can be lowered for easier entry into the RAM or loading into the bed. Plus this system auto-matically lowers over 100km/h to also reduce aerodynamic drag. At lower speeds and for off-road duties, the air suspension can be raised for better ground clearance. Having had a chance to drive several RAM trucks with this feature I notice the already smooth ride is even better and the cabin is further insulated from vibration.

Inside In the past trucks were typi-cally used for work. Today, trucks have grown in popularity because they can be rugged on a work site and luxurious for all occupants. Having driven the Ford and new GM trucks recently, I can easily say that RAM still has the lead in interior design and finish with the Chevrolet and GMC right behind. (Ford is looking dated but look for an all-new F-150 in 2015). The centre console can be equipped with an 8.3-inch Uconnect communications and entertainment screen. In addition, there is a large

7-inch screen behind the steering wheel for fully customizable instant infor-mation readouts. The dash and seats can be trimmed in leather typically found in luxury cars not long ago.

Drive The biggest change for 2014 includes the first diesel engine found in a light duty 1500 pickup truck. This is an Ital-ian designed engine that has been used extensively in Europe in Jeep products like the Grand Cherokee. With 420 lb.-ft. or torque, this new “EcoDiesel” has the same output as Ford’s Ecoboost but not the same towing capacity. Rated at 9200 lbs. this truck will be perfect for buyers who want impressive fuel economy and good towing capacity; a balance of usability and thriftiness. This engine has not been rated yet for fuel economy but thanks to a standard 8-speed automat-ic transmission; this new EcoDiesel is going to get better numbers than the already class-leading gasoline V6 RAM. Look for the new EcoDiesel RAMs arriving in January of 2014. On the heavy duty side there is also an all-new engine in the form of a 6.4L Hemi V8. The old 5.7L was not a perfect match

for gasoline truck buyers but RAM hopes this 429 lb.-ft. engine will attract more buyers.

Verdict As competi-tive as the car business is, the truck side is nuclear. Truck buyers take their trucks very seriously and the people building them do too. It takes dynamite to get a loyal truck owner to change brands but RAM has done a good job of blasting the competition. Most of this success has been thanks to constant improvements instead of waiting years to update

their rigs. With a new diesel engine in the 1500 to an all-new gasoline engine in the heavy-duty trucks, matched to sophisticated transmissions, improved suspensions and cabins, it is no wonder that RAM is on an upward swing.

The Lowdown Power: 3.6L V6, 3.0L V6 turbo diesel, 5.7L V8. 6.4L V8 and 6.7L dieselPrice range: $19,995-$36,495 base prices. The diesel option adds around $4,500

What women want while car shopping

driveway

Women are a huge driving force (pardon the pun) in the car-buying world. Studies show that around 60 per cent of new vehicles purchases are made by women. Further to that, matriarchs heavily influence decisions on car buying within the family, too – per-haps as much as 85 percent of all purchases. While many hubbies would love a hot, little sports car, perhaps it’s not always ideal for, you know, life.Buying a vehicle is con-sidered to be the second biggest purchase someone can make. The first is your home. So when someone says it’s not that big of a deal, it kind of is.Not only is it a long-term decision, but a financially significant one as well. It can also bring up many emotions: excitement, stress, anxiety and more.Leading up to the 2013 Vancouver International Auto Show, I had the privilege of assisting six women with their new car purchases. They gave me a budget and a list of “needs and wants” and then we went to the drawing board. The experience opened my eyes to a few things. Though each of the women were looking for something different from each other, there were common threads that presented themselves.

PRICEBudgets are very important to everyone. And sticking to it was even more important for the women I worked with. Yes, there are always temptations to get a few extra bells and whistles, and if you can work it into your bottom line, that’s ideal. But the navigatio-package or premium sound system wasn’t a must-have.

WARRANTIESAdditional warranties were paramount. For those not leasing and swapping vehi-cles every four years, having the extra bit of protection from wear and tear was something they wanted to accommodate in their budgets, especially those who drive frequently.

SAFETYLooks are great but it is the safety features women are after. There’s a lot of technology out there. Some-times it is even overwhelm-ing. But things like airbags,

ABS, traction control and even backup cameras (for the larger vehicles) were high on the priority list.

INTERIOR CAPACITYCargo volume is subjective in the sense where not everyone needs asmuch as the other. But when it was in the top three of “needs” sometimes thinking outside of the box was necessary.Sacrificing looks for func-tionality, again, is some-thing that often happens. That said, it is not always

‘‘Looks are great but it is the safety features women are after.’’Alexandra Straub

the case, and with designs of vehicles these days, it is getting easier to have your cake and eat it too.

CAR BUYING COMFORTThe dealership experience plays a huge role in having that brand new vehicle sparkling on your driveway. In fact, you can’t really avoid it unless you’re buying through a private sale. No matter how good the product, if

there’s discomfort or pressure in the buying process, can sour the sale. The product is the same regardless of where you buy it from, it’s really the human element that can make or break the deal. Though, the women I worked with all had wonderful experiences.Ladies, if you’re looking at buying a new vehicle and would like some

suggestions/assistance, email me and you could be featured in Driveway.Include your name, your name, email address best to be reached, a little bit about yourself, what you’re looking for and in what price range you need to work.

UNDERSTANDING THE 7 DEGREE DIFFERENCEThanks to their special compound, winter tires offer the elasticity required to ensure maximum grip throughout the cold season, regardless of the road conditions. Summer tires can become hard when the temperatures fall below 7 degrees Celsius, thereby losing the fl exibility needed to build up suffi cient grip for braking, starting off, and cornering. Because of their greater suppleness in the cold, winter tires are able to interlock with the asphalt, snow, and ice, even at lower temperatures.

Mean Mower

Honda’s ‘Mean Mower’ is set for a special appearance next week in front of 60,000 trade visitors at the world’s premier automotive speciality trade show, SEMA in Las Vegas. The 1000cc, 109hp lawn tractor will appear on Honda’s stand within the Las Vegas Convention Centre alongside the 2014 Civic coupe, which makes its world debut at the show, as well as an array of personalised Honda cars and motorcycles.Commissioned by Honda (UK) and built by its British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) partner, Team Dynamics, Mean Mower is set-up and geared to achieve a top speed of 133mph, weighing just 140kgm, producing 96Nm of torque and an incredible power-to-weight ratio of 532bhp/tonne. The project saw Team Dynamics re-engineer a Honda HF2620 Lawn Tractor from the ground-up, adding a cus-tom-made fabricated chassis, a 1000cc engine from a Hon-da VTR Firestorm, a bespoke suspension and wheels from an ATV. It features a custom-made paddle shift six-speed gear system, a bespoke sports seat, a Scorpion exhaust system and a steering rack taken from a Morris Minor.Every effort has been made to retain as much of the look of the original mower as possible. The cutter deck was custom-made in fi bre-glass, to reduce weight, while, in a stroke of pure genius, the grass bag provides a happy home for the fuel tank, a high capacity oil cooler and a secondary water cooling radiator. Mean Mower can also still cut grass, at up to 25 km/h, thanks to two electric motors on the cutter deck, spinning 3 mm steel cutting cable at an incredi-ble 4,000rpm.

WOODPhyllis Cicily

Jan. 20, 1921 ~ Oct. 11, 2013

Phyllis Cicily Wood, 92, of Mission, died October 11, 2013. She was born January 10, 1921 in a small town called Brancepeth, Saskatche-wan which is 25 miles south of Prince Albert where she grew up on the family farm with her sister Ellen. In 1939 the Second World War broke out. In 1943, at the age of 22, Phyllis went east to Ontario to worked in an airframe and munitions factory. She re-turned home to help her father with the farm work as all the men had gone to war. When James Alex Wood returned home from the war in April 1945 Phyllis played a major role in nursing him back to health. They were married June 28, 1945 and settled in Saskatoon, Sask. Alex and Phyllis had known each other since childhood as the family farms were nearby. They were married for 68 years. Phyllis is survived by her husband, Dr. Alex Wood, sons Brian and Murray Wood and granddaugh-ter, Sophie Wood. Phyllis made the decision to focus her energies and life on being a wife, mother and community leader. She was very active in their Saskatoon church, St. Andrews United Church, and was very involved with the Sunday school and fund raisers. Next to her family, gardening was her love. She developed award winning gardens and the home was always fi lled with fl owers. We shall miss her love, wisdom, and her beautiful bouquets. In lieu of fl owers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Alzheimer Society of B.C.
