July 2016 - Service Dogs & Mini Horses! The State of Michigan Adopts New Registered Service Animal Program This new legislation became effective on January 18, 2016, and provides a voluntary ID patch and card for Service Animals recognized by the ADA, at no charge. It will allow service animals to be easily identified, and is a signal to hotels, restaurants, and other businesses that the animal is verified as being trained and necessary to assist their handler. For those animals that are not voluntarily registered, businesses have the right to ask 2 questions to determine if the animal is a Service Animal and not just a pet: 1. Is the animal a service animal required because of a disability? 2. What work or task has the animal been trained to perform?
