As thousands gathered for Family Fest 39 —Misericordia made its own sunshine and got the party started!By pooling our strengths and resources, Family Fest once again succeeded in raising the needed funds to help empower our residents to lead their best lives. Continuing the excellent care and programs that carry our name are the heart of the Misericordia mission. It’s all possible because of the support of the staff, volunteers, sponsors, families and friends of Misericordia who contributed to the massive one day effort! Thank you to John Tortorello and grounds crew for keeping things beautiful, and to the Greco Team for their devotion to the Family Fest Cash and Car Raffle. Hats off to all the entertainers, especially the Heartzingers and Heartbreakers who performed with such exuberance. We also thank our good friend, Andy Francis at Evergreen Kia, for his generous donation of a 2020 KIA Soul.

Anniversary Celebrations!A message from Sister Rosemary Connelly
Dear Family and Friends,As many of you are aware, this has been and continues to be “a year of celebra-
tion” for me! Along with celebrating 70 years as a Sister of Mercy, I am blessed to have shared life here at Misericordia for 50 years. I am overwhelmed with God’s goodness to me personally through the loving friendship and support of so many good and generous friends – many who comprise our Misericordia Family!
Fifty years ago, the Sisters of Mercy gave me one of the greatest gifts of my life. They appointed me as Administrator of Misericordia South, located at 2916 W. 47th Street. It was a single large building, which then served 130 children with developmental disabilities until the age of six years old. As was typical of the time, the children received beautiful custodial care, but no programs were available. As a former teacher and social worker, I wanted more! We created our own unsophisticated programs and the response from the children was unbelievably successful! Many were not sick children, but persons with special needs. We knew they did not belong in a skilled nursing home, thus the beginning of Misericordia North.
The Archdiocese of Chicago permitted us to renovate several of the large buildings on the closed Angel Guard-ian Orphanage property at 6300 Ridge. We began with 39 children and 35 staff on the abandoned North Side campus after renovation of two of the large buildings. We had two dormitories, a learning center, a recreational room and a prayer room.
Today, I am in awe of God’s goodness to Misericordia through you, His Friends and Family. We not only have a beautiful campus filled with lovely residential homes and program buildings, but also 13 lovely residences in various neighborhoods. We also have 600 residents, 200 day program participants, and over 1,100 staff.
I am convinced God is using Misericordia to witness to the world, that in spite of the news media, there are thousands of good and generous people who know they are called to be there for the vul-
nerable members of our society! We are very grateful so many have found their way to Misericordia!
Saying “thank you” to every member of our Misericordia Fam-ily seems so inadequate! Please know my heart is filled with loving gratitude for all that was, is, and will be! I regard myself as a blessed and privileged person to have shared life, in good times and in dif-ficult times, with so many of you, my Misericordia Family! Words are inadequate to express my loving gratitude!
God’s blessings on you and yours.
Lovingly,
Fall 2019
Sister Rosemary Connelly, RSMExecutive Director
Anniversary Celebrations!
Sister Rosemary Connelly was honored on August 25, 2019, by her religious and Misericordia families and friends as she celebrated her incredible 70 years as a Sister of Mercy and 50 years as Executive Director of Misericordia.
The festive evening, held at Chi-cago’s downtown Hilton, was a joyful event, filled with laughter, sentimen-tal tributes, music by Misericordia’s Heartbreakers and Heartzingers, and a procession of bagpipes from the Shan-non Rovers.
Thank you for your amazing legacy of leadership and compassion!

The practice of asking for donations to a favorite charity to commemorate
the death of a loved one is very thoughtful. In the past few months,
such requests have resulted in donations that benefit Misericordia.
We thank those benefactors and their families, and respectfully ask that you remember them in your
thoughts and prayers.◆

All in attendance had a wonderful time while raising money for the children and adults of Misericordia. See you next year rain or shine!
