145 Annette Holzwarth, 'Thin Vale', acrylic, crystal oil oncanvas, 2013 Annette Holzwarth, born in Stuttgart, MAdegree in literature, philosophy and theatre studiesfrom Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, livingand working in west London: I would describe myselfas an 'automatic crystal painter'. I make abstractpaintings in which the art historically well-establishedpractice of extemporised abstraction is reconceived orregenerated through some quite distinctive practices ofmy own devising. Principal amongst these is the use ofcrystals, both as a painting medium and as paintingtools. A variety of crystals are ground and mixed in withthe paint so that its liquidity is offset by a grainy, mineral, surface. Large pieces of rutilated quartz andother crystals are used instead of brushes or palletknives – held in my fist like a stone-age hand-axe, theyimpart a direct physicality. I use crystals both for theirmaterial properties and for the mystical and ritualsignificance associated with these minerals in culturesall over the world. Crystals combine an emphaticmateriality with a sense of the ineffable, of the occult. The ambition is to both extend and depart from thestrong tradition of painting defined by the canonicalfigures I admire, such as Asger Jorn and Willem deKooning, and reconcile that with the spiritual dimensionwe now associate with the growing awareness of theworks of the mystic, and pioneer of abstraction, Hilmaaf Klint.

‘Rietz, near Saumur’ currently held at The AshmoleanMuseum in Oxford, as well as to the later engraving ofthe same title by R. Brandard published 1833 held atThe Tate. It is ‘where the reflected light from the risingsun falls on the water’ which is the most powerful andpotentially significant; perhaps by the hand of Turnerwhen tutoring a student. On successive visits to FranceTurner explored the Loire in 1826 and Seine from 1821–32. A larger plan to portray the great rivers of Europewas never realised, but three volumes of prints werepublished by Heath with letterpress by Leitch Ritchie asWandering by the Loire and Seine (1833–5). Marketedas ‘Turner’s Annual Tour’ and later combined as Riversof France, they were pitched at new middle classreaders who might expect to follow in the artist’sfootsteps. (J.M.W. Turner: Sketchbooks, Drawings andWatercolours, TATE) Turner made a short excursion tothe east from Saumur, following the southern bank ofthe Loire. He stopped close to Candes St-Martin andMontsoreau before he got to the point at which theLoire meets its tributary, the Vienne. It is the outline ofthese adjoining villages that can be seen in thedistance here, but it is the confluence of the rivers thatforms the true subject, since this is where the reflectedlight from the rising sun falls on the water. The viewwas engraved under the title 'Reitz', an approximationof 'Rets', which was the traditional name forMontsoreau. Several details were added to thisengraved version of the scene, including the boats inthe foreground.(http://www.tate.org.uk/art/artworks/turner-rietz-near-saumur-engraved-by-r-brandard-t04690) ‘Havingworked on Turner’s views of the River Loire many yearsago, I was interested to see the picture you areinvestigating, but I think it very unlikely that it waspainted by JMW Turner himself. The colouring is muchdarker than anything else that relates to this project(such as the oil painting he exhibited at the RA in 1829,now in the Worcester Art Museum, Massachusetts). Inaddition to that, the handling of the sky (particularly theclouds) is not very accomplished, and certainly notcomparable with what we find in paintings by himdating from around 1830. You mention that the canvasseems likely to originate from around 1840, and thattoo goes against the odds of a Turner attribution. Amore significant problem is that this work relates veryclosely to one of the published Loire subjects -something you have already explored. Turner onlyrarely repeated works from one medium to another, and though he might have been tempted to do so for awork that had a commercial purpose, the oil paintingalready mentioned (in Worcester) was effectively hisway of publicising the Loire project in the public sphereof a Royal Academy exhibition. Crucially, you probablynoticed when looking at your picture alongside the

watercolour in the Ashmolean Museum, your versionhas the sail of a barge and another small boat in thebottom left corner of the image, whereas these detailsare missing in the original image. This tells me that theartist who made your painting was actually workingfrom a copy of the published engraving, where RobertBrandard added the boats, following revisions byTurner on one of the proofs. In fact the darker tone ofyour version is not close to the watercolour’s colours, and it may be that your painter perhaps mistook thesunrise effect in Turner’s image for moonlight. Withoutany signature I doubt it would be possible to link thepicture with a specific artist. But you could safelycatalogue it as "After Turner”.’ Ian Warrell SeniorVisiting Scholar for Collections Research at the YCBACurator 18th and 19th Century British Art TATE 1984 –2011
