    DATE

    CLAIMERS

Welcome to the 2020 school year both to our returning and new students. We

have had a very productive start to the school year with students actively

engaging in their studies from day one (1). We hope that every family had an

enjoyable time throughout the holiday break. As always, we welcome the

new families who have joined our community.

    2019 YEAR 12 OUTCOMES

The Valley can be very proud of our 2019 graduating Year 12s for their

excellent outcomes and attainment of their future pathways. This cohort’s

achievement was higher than any other over the past few years. Importantly

every student gained their senior certification, a QCE or QCIA. Their

Queensland Core Skills result was also higher on average with all eligible

students gaining an OP from 1 to 16. Just as important is that all students in

our flexi program transitioned into full-time apprenticeships.

These outcomes not only reflect the maturity of the 2019 graduates, but the

important support they have received from their families. Student success is

truly a partnership between a student’s home and the school. It also attests

to the quality of our teaching staffs’ pedagogy and support staff who work with

students to meet their needs. As always, ‘it takes a whole village to raise a

    child”.

We are almost a third of the way through Term 1 and to maximise success

every student must attend school every day. I look forward to working with

you, so that each student has the opportunity to reach their potential.

YEAR 7 WELCOME BBQ On Tuesday 4th February, we welcomed our new Year 7 families with an informal BBQ, where parents

and students had the opportunity to meet and greet their Core teachers and other staff.

The evening was a great success with the high-energy anticipation of families observing first-hand, the

learning environment, classroom routines and expectations. Our staff were also very keen to meet the

parents they will work closely with, to ensure our Year 7s have a smooth start to high school!

A huge thank you to our wonderful P & C for providing us with a delicious meal, as well as the team of

volunteers who cooked and organised the BBQ.

    vices.

    “NO PURPLE, NO GO!”

Programs run by the Support Service will be notified in the daily bulletin and communication on stu-

dents attending, locations and times out-of-class will be sent to relevant teachers.

    Hi Everyone!

I’m Vanessa Gilmore, the Mirani State High, School Based Youth Health Nurse (SBYHN). I can be found in A Block on Thursdays and Friday each week. Please feel free to call me on 49667 112 or email me on [email protected] if you have any queries. An outline of what I do The SBYHN works with students and school community on issues that may affect the health and well-being of young people and the school community as a whole. This includes helping with curriculum, teaching and learning activities, providing health information and referral, supporting the development of the environment and school culture that supports health and wellbeing, and working with the commu-nity and other services. The SBYHN can provide health and wellbeing information about: healthy eating and physical activity feeling unhappy or stressed relationships healthy skin personal and family problems growth and development sexual health smoking, alcohol and other drugs. Confidentiality Young people have a right to confidentiality when accessing health services. As a health service provid-er, the SBYHN respects this but there are some things the nurse must refer or act upon. In most cases, it is best for young people to talk to their parents about health and wellbeing is-sues. I can support young people to do this. Getting the best help for health At times other services can provide more appropriate or further help or support for young people. The SBYHN will discuss the options for working with other services or linking young people with the right services. The SBYHN does not provide

treatment such as medications, injections, first aid physical examinations ongoing counselling for psychological problems.

Student appointments can be made to see me before or after school, or during breaks. Cheers, Vanessa Gilmore School Based Youth Health Nurse

    Immunisation Program

Year 7 & Year 10 Students Our school is participating in Queensland Health’s annual School Immunisation Program. All Year 7

and Year 10 students will be offered FREE vaccinations as recommended on the National Immunisa-

tion Program schedule. Year 7 students will be offered human papillomavirus (HPV) and diphtheria,

tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough) vaccinations. Year 10 students will be offered meningococcal

    ACWY vaccination.

It is important that you read the information booklet contained in the consent pack that was sent home

    with your child.

Only students with a signed and completed consent card indicating “Yes to Vaccination” will

be vaccinated. If you do not wish your child to be vaccinated, or your child has already been

vaccinated with the offered vaccines, please complete the “No to Vaccination” section on the consent

card and return the card to school within one week.

Parents that have indicated “No to vaccination” will not be followed up by the provider but you

will receive a phone call if your form has not been returned.

The vaccinations will be conducted by a team of authorised registered nurses. Parents are encour-

aged to ensure their children have an adequate breakfast on the morning of vaccination.

The vaccination team will be visiting the school to give the free vaccines on the following dates:

YOUR HEALTH MATTERS In Queensland the levels of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) from the sun are high enough to damage your

skin all year round. You can be exposed to UVR from the sun through everyday activities like walking

to the shop, waiting for the bus and hanging out washing. This exposure adds up and increases your

risk of developing skin cancer. Skin cancer is a serious disease that can cause disfigurement or death,

but reducing your risk is easy.

Most of us know to 'slip slop slap', but did you know there are actually five ways to protect yourself

    from the sun?

    Slip on a shirt

Slop on broad spectrum SPF 30 or higher sunscreen

    Slap on a broad-brimmed hat

    Seek shade

    Slide on some sunglasses

Consider clothes made from a close weave cotton to allow the skin to breathe. Cotton clothing is also

cool and comfortable to wear. To protect skin from UVR, clothing and swimwear need to have an ul-

traviolet protection factor (UPF) of at least 30 and swimwear with a minimum UPF rating of 50+ are

    recommended.

    UPF ratings and protection categories:

    15 - 24 UPF rating - 93.3 - 95.9% blocked (good protection)

    25 - 39 UPF rating - 96.0 - 97.4% blocked (very good protection)

40 and over UPF rating - 97.5% or more (excellent protection)

Apply water resistant, broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher sunscreen 20 minutes before going outside.

Reapply every 2 hours and more regularly if swimming or sweating. Make sunscreen part of your

morning routine. When buying sunscreen look for an ‘Aust L’ number on the label to ensure the prod-

uct has been passed by the Therapeutic Goods Administration.

Check the ‘use by’ date to ensure the product has not expired.

Don't leave sunscreen in hot places such as cars, as excessive heat can reduce its effectiveness. Peo-

ple who have had skin reactions to sunscreen should try a different brand. Look for products that are

labelled as suitable for sensitive skin and fragrance free.

Shade your face, ears and neck with a hat. Choose a well-fitting broad brim hat which will protect the

face and neck. Caps and visors are not recommended as they don’t provide protection for the face,

ears, and neck – places where skin cancers are often found.

Get in the shade when you can—seek shade under trees and buildings or bring an umbrella or portable

    shade structure.

Wear sunglasses that meet Australian standard AS/NZS 1067:2003 and preferably have an Eye Protec-

    tion Factor (EPF) of 10.

Choose sunglasses which protect the side of the eye as much as possible and fit closely on your face.

Sunglasses prevent the formation of cataracts and other eye conditions later in life.

Think about what you’re wearing – is your skin well covered?

Always grab your sunglasses and hat before you go outside

Walk on the shady side of the street

Keep spare hats and umbrellas in your car or bag

Plan your activities to avoid being outside in the middle of the day if possible

    Hi,

Did you like the monsoonal Pioneer Valley welcome back to school? So good to be getting

rain. Spare a thought, then PRAY for those inland areas where the drought needs rain to break

it. Just as God has looked after fire-fields with ‘unseasonal’ rains, He can bring rain to those

    parched lands too.

Term 1 has soggily got underway and it’s great to see students and staff happy to be back. No

doubt parents were happy too, to see a return to the school-time routine. Was it tough for the

first couple of days? You’ll be right, once you get back into the habit the weeks will fly by.

    Oops! They are!

For Valley Chaplaincy, it’s been a wonderful start with all the Chappies getting together at Sea-

forth for a Pre-Term Retreat. Also, the Chaplaincy contracts have been sent and those schools

with Chappies will continue to get those services. Mirani High’s Chappie Days are Wednesday

and Thursday. On Wednesday, Lunch 1 has Chappie Games in the Library and on Thursday,

Lunch 2 has Chappie Chat in A Block. Chappie Chat focuses on Christian themes so students

need Parental Permission to attend, they can get permission slips from me.

How’d you go with the TEN TIPS for Controlling Screen Time? Remember:

    Commit to a PLAN,

    Eat meals AWAY from screens

    DON’T watch IN BED

    CHARGE phone outside bedroom

    How about using LOCKOUT?

Then there’s Meet FACE-TO-FACE instead of Facebook

    PHONE instead of Text,

    Go NON-digital and did you

    Take up a TECH-FREE Hobby?

Finally, give the rest of your body a WORKOUT.

Which worked for you? Keep trying different ones and enjoy the benefits. Stay healthy for a

great 2020 school year, stay sane with controlled screen-time and enjoy your families and

friends. Oh! And be nice to your teachers! Amen.

    Cheers in Christ,

QParents has been created by the Department of Education and Training to provide parents

of Queensland state school students with secure online access to their child's information.

The portal allows you to securely access information about your child and to communicate

    directly with your child's school.

You are also able to update your child's details including address and medical conditions,

submit reasons for unexplained absences, notify the school of future absences, and make

    online payments against school invoices.

    Registering with QParents

You can register for QParents only after you have received an invitation email or letter from

your child's school, containing your unique invitation code.
