Science Fair ParticipationChris Zeller told the council about his experience at the Wyoming State Science Fair (http://www.uwyo.edu/uw/news/2014/03/casper,-greybull,-laramie-and-veteran-students-win-state-science-fair-competition.html). He and Michael Stoellinger served as volunteer judges. They awarded 2 well-deserved prizes (IPAD mini) from AIAA-RMS to one high school and one junior high school student. We also plan to give them a one-year student membership if Mike Stoellinger can get the students’ contact information. The forms should be returned to Sue Janssen who will submit the forms with payment. The expenses for the Wyoming State Science Fair were well within the allocated budget.

Chris ordered a Dobsonian telescope for one of the prizes but did not use it for the Wyoming fair. Sue Janssen made the motion to retain the telescope for use as a prize in a future STEM event. John Grace seconded. Chris will store the telescope. Jason Kuchera volunteered to help the winning student learn how to properly use the telescope.

John Eiler summarized the preparations for the Colorado State Science Fair. He had seven volunteer judges (including himself). One volunteer could not be there for the whole day so he declined her support. He has purchased two IPAD minis for prizes and will try to get the backs engraved with a brief message about the “AIAA RMS Prize.” Sue Janssen will request blank certificates from AIAA headquarters to be given with the prize. Judging will take place on 10 April in Fort Collins. John will attend the award ceremony on 11 April.

AIAA National Education Committee RequestThe National AIAA Education Committee has a program called “Mars Rover Workshop”. This program is a curriculum developed by the AIAA that is targeted at students in grades 3-8. The AIAA program teaches Grade 3-8 Instructors the curriculum and provides some of the classroom materials. We held a training session in Colorado Springs and Littleton in the summer of 2012.Details: http://www.aiaa.org/Secondary.aspx?id=17579

The current request for the committee chairman, Dr. Gar Bering, is to hold another training session for instructors in Colorado Springs and Boulder this summer with planned dates

The council discussed if and how to support the National Education Committee request. Pam Burke suggested connecting with the Space Foundation. John will send an email to membership and to educator associates requesting volunteers. Sue will provide the email addresses for educator associates to John. John Grace mentioned that Boy Scouts USA is having a STEM event at the National Western Stock Show Complex on 26 April (http://www.denverboyscouts.org/event/1444810). John Eiler will investigate if this is an opportunity for AIAA RMS outreach.

MembershipSue Janssen reported total membership is 1279 as of 28 February.

Sue contacted Matthew Cannella of United Launch Alliance to ask for his help in arranging a lunch-time membership drive, probably in April. Matthew is working with Laura Richard (Region V Director and ULA employee) to schedule. The membership drive at Lockheed Martin recruited three new members in January/February.

The council discussed benefits of membership - WIIFM?? – What’s in it for me? Primary benefit is networking – meeting professionals in the industry, but not at your company. Best way to decide if you want to invest in a membership is to come to an event.

NewsletterAdrian Nagle has agreed to become the newsletter editor. He asked each officer and subcommittee chair to provide a brief article to him for the March newsletter.

ProgramsChris Zeller provided information for the upcoming programs:

20 March – Cancelled April 3 – Colorado School of Mines April 22 – Wings Over the Rockies Museum, cosponsored with INCOSE May 22– Honors and Awards Banquet

Brian Gulliver volunteered to present a program on commercial spaceport development at Mines on 3 April. Chris would like to have a program (perhaps co-presentation by Sierra Nevada and Lockheed Martin) on Dream Chaser (http://www.sncspace.com/ss_space_exploration.php). Pam Burke will provide contact information to Chris.Chris thanked Donna Gerren for successfully encouraging students from CU Boulder to attend the February program.

Public PolicyJason Kuchera submitted the following report via email:

Questions for Council: What dollar amount can the RMS commit to in support of the Colorado Aerospace

Day costs? (Fred Slane seconded motion) Can we have student membership maintain a blog (e.g. RMS SharePoint site,

Facebook page, Twitter, etc.) for aerospace news that would provide value-added informative for our members?

Colorado Aerospace Day (March 24, 2014) (Yes, the date is the 24th, not the 25th) Planning is commencing. AIAA-RMS has a

table. Event will be in East-West corridor this year vice the rotunda. Advisory is being redlined this week:

LegislativeState

South Metro Chamber (SMC) Day (February 26th): Several State Senators, Representatives and Governor Hickenlooper in attendance. Discussion covered all major topics of the day, including aerospace. John Brackney, Chamber President and CEO, believes the industry is doing better at getting the word out, but we can do a LOT more. One thing to consider is testifying in front of State committees. This is the best way to inform State Legislators on the importance of aerospace. The South Metro Chamber has many resources available to help prepare people for testifying.

Summer goalso Work with Mary Snitch to refine what AIAA can and cannot say when

approaching legislatureso Meet with Colorado Aerospace Champion, Maj. Gen. Jay Lindello Work with SMC on opportunities for testifyingo Schedule appointments with Front Range legislators as resources allow

CVD was on March 12th.ATS

“CSBR is committed to supporting ATS again this year. We can certainly help in any or all areas where we add value to the Symposium. “ – Stacy DeFore, CSBR

Taylor and Jason currently working ideas for involvement levelOther Opportunities

AIAA sponsored UAS symposium (Spring 2014)o Photonics org is having a session on UAS/UAV in Feb (Pam is in

contact)o Colorado not chosen as UAS test site – RMUAV is reorienting

PPC team considering a ‘speakers bureau’ where we could provide outreach to rural communities in the importance and realities of aerospace/UAVs, etc.

o The first Colorado Road Trip of 2014 tentatively planned for April 9-11; this may provide forum to start. Working with Joe Rice on details.

Opportunities to engage local schools for STEM engagement PPC team investigating potential relationships with local media to provide

aerospace and technical support Grant ‘accelerator’ meeting (OEDIT): PPC team could leverage on Pam’s

exposure to OEDIT to provide an informative forum on the grant process What now for Colorado after publishing “Launch”? Dave Lung could provide

more insight into what Colorado leadership plans; so may CO Aerospace Champion.

Issue papers: UAS commercialization, UAS privacy, etc. Opportunities for outreach to local rotaries, chambers, Kiwanis, etc.

Points of Contact Legislative, CSBR & Aerospace Day: Jason Kuchera Space Foundation: Arthur Hingerty UAS, OEDIT: Pam Burke

Jason expressed that he feels it is much more advantageous to work locally rather than travel to Washington DC once a year for CVD. Federal staffers are available year-round in Colorado. RMS can deal directly with state legislators. CSBR can facilitate access to legislators.Cindy McNamara will email Jason the approved budget line item for Public Policy activities.

John asked the council if the email list should be “scrubbed.” The list includes members and non-members and sometimes multiple addresses for subscribers. The council decided to totally refresh the list in June starting with AIAA’s database. If non-members want to keep abreast of section news and activities they can do so on the webpage. Sue Janssen will craft an email message to that effect.Brian Gulliver volunteered to become webmaster next year! John will begin the transition.John suggested posting ASME program notices on the RMS page. All agreed this is a good idea.

Young ProfessionalsHeather McKay and Chris Zeller are planning a membership drive at Ball Aerospace. Potentially we will have another happy hour and a BBQ during the summer.

AdjournmentRoger adjourned the meeting at approximately 20:30. The next council meeting will be held 16 April. Sue will send the announcement.

Respectfully submitted,Sue JanssenSecretary, AIAA RMS
