Erosion & Sediment Control Videos

With funding provided by the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District (MCWD), MECA has created a series of short videos on erosion and sediment control practices.

Message from the MECA President, Mr. Greg Berg Happy New Year to the MECA organization. I am looking forward to another great year in the erosion control and

stormwater profession.

As you may have seen we are charging forward with the new administration and work of Ruth Kraemer. Many

workshops, notices, informational publications, etc. have been shared thru MECA and we hope to keep bringing

more…….. One initiative to keep a watch out for is the calendar of upcoming events. Ruth has helped guide the

board into developing a calendar of activities for the year. At the December 2013 MECA Board meeting the group took some time to

list the upcoming programs and workshops. This is a guideline and can always be modified, but is meant to inform you of what is

being worked on so you can better plan and get involved if you would like. Obviously if you have additional ideas that you would like

MECA to explore, please feel to bring them up with Ruth or a board member.

Well, back to the metro area for the 2014 MECA Annual Conference, which will be held at the Mystic Lake Conference Center in

Prior Lake. As always, we hope to see you at the conference, and for those with restrictions on traveling outside of the metro area, we

hope to have you back after holding the event outside the metro the past couple of years. The MECA Conference Planning Committee

has put together another outstanding conference lineup of topics and speakers. We are excited to have Don Shelby join us as the key-

note speaker this year.

It seems the building industry with associated erosion control and stormwater projects are making a comeback. I talked to several

folks this past year that said there were very “busy”. That is great news after some down years.

As a MECA member I want to challenge you to tell someone else about the organization in 2014. I think of all of the people I have

met and things I have learned thru MECA events. We are very fortunate to have such a great network of people working towards the

same goals. One goal of MECA has always been to get contractors more involved. If you have contacts and/or ideas on how to make

this happen, Ruth and the MECA Board would welcome your ideas.

Project Description: This site on the Sauk River had a severely eroded outside bank.

This erosive steep slope along 600 feet of shoreline on the Sauk River had areas that were up to 30

feet straight up and down. The landowners approached the Stearns County SWCD for technical and

financial assistance to address the slope failure. The Stearns County SWCD, along with the West

Central Technical Service Area, designed a low impact approach to stabilizing the streambank. This

involved using field stone rock for stream barbs and rock riprap, toe wood, root wads from the trees

that had to be removed, and cedar tree revetments. In addition, after the slope was re-graded, native

grasses and wildflowers were seeded and planted from plugs. Trees and shrubs were also planted

from potted stock. The entire site was hydro mulched or covered with erosion control blanket to

ensure stabilization. Sediment logs were also placed on the slope to reduce the impact from surface

water runoff.

As the Erosion Industry changes and the Mn Dot specification changes,

it is time to get updated on erosion products.

A workshop on Rolled Erosion Control Products will be held March 4, 2014. This will be in conjunction with

the Minnesota Erosion Control Association (MECA) Conference being held on March 4th-6th, 2014 at the

Mystic Lake Event Center in Prior Lake Minnesota.

This workshop will feature the new specifications along with the manufacturers and

distributors identifying their products and where they fit into the MnDot categories.

This is a great opportunity for engineers, inspectors and installers! Learn what products to use—where, when and the proper installation.

The industry changes with the new technology and this will assist everyone in the construction industry.

After the workshop you are invited to attend the MECA Trade Show to view products,

visit with manufacturers and distributors and enjoy a social sponsored by

the Minnesota Seeders Contractors Association.

NEW PRODUCT INFORMATION A new erosion control/re-vegetation spray-on product EarthGuard Fiber Matrix. EarthGuard has recently been introduced and may be used in place of erosion control blankets.

EarthGuard can be utilized in various manners:

1) Site Winterization/Dormant Seeding: Used with or without seed, EarthGuard can be applied to bare slopes, stock piles and drilling pads to provide erosion control protection during the winter season (a Construction BMP).

2) Re-Vegetation: EarthGuard will hold the soil, fertilizer, mulch and seed an extended period of time giving seeds the vital time necessary to properly germinate and grow. EarthGuard does not create a hardened crust on the surface pre-venting growth either.

3) Temporary Erosion Control: By adjusting application rates, EarthGuard can be applied in a manner with or without fi-ber mulch to provide erosion control for a reduced period of time.
