The current construction crunch is now in its fourth year, and the economy remains in limbo, with the looming potential for a double dip in 2012. Numerous contractors, ranging from small to large, are struggling to keep existing clients and grab a foothold in this new environment. In addition to the forced layoffs, many are losing key staff members in the process. PRESIDENT’S COLUMNBy Alana Sunness Griffith

Wanna be a member of the “Club”?

Everyone – man, woman and child – likes to be a real part of things. Whether it is in the office, jobsite, school, sports, church, etc. … when we walk in, we

want to be recognized and feel at “home” and that we’re in the right place at the right time. Since becoming a member of the Minnesota Construction Association, I’ve always felt at “home”. I am with my peer group, feeling welcome and comfortable. When I was at the MCA Golf Outing in June, as I got out of my car and started walking towards the clubhouse I felt welcome and comfortable. Even though I may not have known everyone by name, I heard “hey, how are ya’?”, “great day to be at an MCA event”, or “are you ready for a good game of golf?” By the time I’d arrived in the clubhouse, I’d already talked to a dozen people who were all thrilled to be there, ready to enjoy the camaraderie of fellow construction professionals plus a round of golf on a beautiful course.

During a gorgeous, sun-filled afternoon of staffing our sponsored golf hole, I had the pleasure of reacquainting myself with MCA members I hadn’t seen for a while, rubbing elbows with a few non-members encouraging them to be a part of our merry group, and chatting with our Board and Committee members. All in all, it was a pleasant and rewarding day.

Following dinner, I talked with a few golfers, encouraging them to come to more of our events. As I was walking out of the dining area, I exchanged a few comments with some non-members asking if they’d had fun. With booming voices and rolling laughter, they said they’d had a great day, but they weren’t quite finished having fun yet! I said I was glad they were enjoying the fun, networking and great company that the MCA “Club” offers all its members.

When I got back into my car to make the trip home, it struck me why I always feel at home with MCA …. it truly is a “Club”. We have wonderful members, we offer interesting and educational opportunities through our programs and events, we have a great scholarship program, and when we have fun we really have a good time. And, it seems to me that people are more envious of you when you say you’re a “Club” member rather than an obligatory member of an association.

So, I propose an informal name change. Rather than being an association member, would you like to be a member of the Minnesota Construction “Club”? Get involved, stay involved, and enjoy what the “Club” has to offer.

On Wednesday, June 6th, MCA hosted its 4th Annual Golf Event at Deer Run in Victoria, MN. The club is located in Victoria, MN in the western suburbs of the

Twin Cities, and is noted for friendly service and an impeccably

maintained golf course. Situated between Lake Bavaria, Church

Lake and Lake Wasserman, Deer Run’s fairways flow through

the rolling landscape and scenic hills. Known as a very fair

and playable golf course, Deer Run is fun to play for the

recreational golfer and challenging for the advanced player.

The Golf Event this year was the most successful to date

with thanks to gorgeous weather and accommodating staff

of Deer Run. Also contributing to the success were member

volunteers, raffle item donors, hole and GPS sponsors, and

three event sponsors. Fun in the sun was had by all on the

course with a scrumptious dinner and raffle drawing to end

the day. While not everyone who left the event that evening

may have had a prize in hand, they all went away winners.

The networking and good times had were priceless. The true

winners will be the scholarship recipients who benefit from the

funds raised by this event. Thank you so much to everyone

involved!

Another great MCA event to keep in mind is the Awards

of Excellence Ceremony. Voting and nominations will be

happening this fall, with the event taking place in January.

Dear Ms. Awards,

Can you tell me how my company can be considered for the General Contractor of the Year award if you don’t have a nomination form anywhere on your website? I’ve looked everywhere for it, but have not been able to find it.

I believe my company is better than every other company out there and really think we deserve to win it this year!

Sincerely,

Ask MS. AWARDS

If you have a question for Ms. Awards, please

email it to Alana Sunness Griffith, Awards Chair, c/o Corinna Hastings at info@

mnconstruction.org.

Dear Mr. Competitive,

There is a very good reason why you have been unsuccessful in finding a nomination form for the General Contractor and Sub-Contractor of the Year Awards. There isn’t one available nor will there be one available. These are the only two awards presented at the MCA Awards of Excellence Gala that are decided by a “People’s Choice” vote. In November, MCA members will receive an email requesting them to vote for these two awards. The ballots are then summarized and a winner of each is selected. The great thing about winning these awards is that they are voted on by your peers and not by a panel of judges.

Last year’s award winner was Greiner Construction for the General Contractor award. According to Brian Wessels, Project Manager at Greiner, “Being chosen by our peers as General Contractor of the Year, proves to us that what, how and who we are as a company is recognized and highly regarded throughout the construction industry. We believe in integrity and performance and receiving this award is just another way for us to validate what we do and how we treat others is a very import aspect to our company.” At last year’s gala, Greiner also took home the New Project of the Year Award (Over $10 Million) with their Solhaus Project in Minneapolis.

Kellington Construction was the award winner for the Sub-Contractor of the Year. Their company had a successful 2011 year by completing the MCTC Helland Student Center in Minneapolis, the Montgomery Lonsdale Elementary School in Montgomery and the New River Medical Center in Monticello to name a few projects that led to them winning their award.

The 2012 General Contractor and Sub-Contractor of the Year Awards will be presented on January 23, 2013 at the Awards of Excellence Gala which is held at the Minneapolis Golf Club. We wish your company well in your goal to obtain the award this year.

Radek Knesl (FMI Corporation)

Sustained growth is critical to long-term success in the construction industry. However, consistency is difficult to maintain within our current slow-paced economic climate with its rollercoaster volatility. As we enter into 2012, FMI will give an outlook on the economic forecast and the national and regional trends that are driving our industry.

•Government construction has been rather a safe harbor for some firms the past few years, but budget constraints are expected to cause serious problems here.

•In the near term, the strongest areas of growth will be found in infrastructure-related markets like transportation, power, water and sewage and waste disposal.

•The future of infrastructure projects will depend on finding new sources of funding, often using new ideas like a National Infrastructure Bank and P3 participation.

•Industry consolidation, especially at the large end of the market, continues to occur.•Globalization influences the domestic market via further penetration of international firms and a growing number

of U.S. E&C firms pursuing international markets.•Construction is evolving from stick building to prefabrication, manufacturing and modularization with the aid of

new technologies and delivery methods like BIM and integrated project deliver (IPD).•Sureties have maintained financial discipline and kept loss ratios historically low during the recession, but expect

greater losses in smaller to mid-sized projects, thus increasing the divide between the “haves” and “have nots,” which usually favors large contractors with strong balance sheets.

•Housing has been, and continues to be, a cloud hanging over U.S. economic recovery.•Without significant growth in single-family housing, nonresidential construction will grow slower than in past

recoveries. However, multi-family construction may be in for a short boom cycle over the next few years.

As a consultant with FMI, Radek consults with contracting companies of all sizes throughout the United States and Canada. Prior to joining FMI, Radek was the vice president of business development at TCM Bank where he was instrumental in the formation and growth of the company. He is a proud recipient of the “Million Dollar Turnaround” award. Radek has more than

10 years of financial expertise through consulting in the banking industry focusing on profitability, operational effective-ness and growth strategies. Radek holds a bachelor’s degree, cum laude, in financial management and international busi-ness and a master of business administration degree with a focus on entrepreneurship from The University of Tampa.

The project replaced two fire stations constructed in the 1960s that did not meet accessibility rules for public buildings or accommodate today’s multi-gender Fire Department staffing. Other concerns included deteriorating structural elements, aging mechanical systems, limited ventilation, lack of apparatus storage space and insufficient meeting space to host all firefighters simultaneously for meetings and training.

The new 30,695-square-foot, two-story Fire Station No. 1 includes Fire Department administration offices, station administration, a training room, kitchen/dayroom, fitness room, locker rooms, hose tower, sleeping quarters and eight apparatus bays of varying depths. The new 16,760-square-foot, one-story Fire Station No. 2 includes station administration, a fitness room, locker rooms, kitchen/dayroom, sleeping quarters and four apparatus bays.

Both buildings incorporate energy efficient and environmentally sound design in accordance with the St. Louis Park’s Green Building Policy. The design includes use of passive solar energy and day-lighting; regionally sourced, recycled, and low VOC emission materials; high efficiency boilers and chillers; and best management practices for storm water management.

“These buildings reflect changes to fire service that occurred over the last 40 years, but most importantly they ensure that the community of St. Louis Park will be well served for the changes that occur in the next 40 years,” said Fire Chief Luke Stemmer. “These are beautiful, state-of-the art buildings that we hope this entire community takes pride in and enjoys for decades to come.”

The St. Louis Park Fire Department employs approximately 24 full-time

staff members including firefighters, administrators and support staff. It also employs approximately 30 paid-on-call firefighters. The St. Louis Park Fire Department is responsible for putting out fires, responding to medical emergencies and car accidents, overseeing clean-up of hazardous material spills, providing disaster recovery services, preventing fires by conducting inspections, enforcing the fire code and fire investigations.

“Kraus-Anderson is proud to have had the opportunity to work with the City of St. Louis Park on these quality facilities that will provide the flexibility required to meet the ever-changing needs of the community,” said Rich Jacobson, senior vice president of Kraus-Anderson. u

STAHL CONSTRUCTION of St. Louis Park has announced the signing of two new contracts for projects getting under way this summer in the Twin Cities metropolitan area and Des Moines, Iowa.

On June 25, Stahl will begin renovating six metro J.C. Penney locations to implement the retailer’s new store-within-a-store concept, creating a series of mini-boutiques built around a “town square.” Local stores to be remodeled include those in Burnsville, Eden Prairie, Edina, Minnetonka, Roseville and Woodbury.

Construction will take place simultaneously in all six Penney stores, with the work carried out in a number of “waves” or phases. Current plans call for the first wave starting this month to encompass a combined 29,000 square feet of space. The second phase, which involves an estimated 26,000 square feet, will launch in August. The third phase will start in October and run through the end of the year.

Stahl has done other work for J.C. Penney in the past, including renovations in St. Cloud and Roseville, conversion of another department store to a J.C. Penney in Eden Prairie and construction of a new store in Baxter, Minn.

In Des Moines, Stahl has already begun construction of the new Edmunds Elementary School, the first new school facility built by the Des Moines Public School District in five years. The $10.25 million project, which started June 4, will involve both construction of a new 70,000-square-foot building north of the current school as well as demolition of the existing structure. Work will be completed

prior to the 2013-2014 school year.

Other Stahl projects ongoing this summer include construction of the new Army National Guard field maintenance shop in Arden Hills; the new Urbandale Middle School, Ankeny Centennial High School and Fort Madison 4-8 School, all in Iowa; and a new elementary school and high school auditorium addition in Bennington, Neb.

Ribbon-cutting ceremonies were held recently for two Twin Cities Stahl projects: the new 98,000-square-foot Richfield Municipal Center, which held its grand opening June 2; and the Minneapolis and Community Technical College Helland Student Center, a 16,800-square-foot addition and 23,000-square-foot renovation that reopened May 3. u

DORAN CONSTRUCTION announces that the Edge on Oak, student housing will be completed in July and is 100% leased for the 2012/2013 school year. Currently Doran Construction is building a 6 story, 65 unit University housing project at stadium village. Underground parking and many amenities are offered at the Edge on Oak. Doran demolished the existing theater structure that was on site prior to construction. Doran is excited to offer another option on the U of M campus. One of the biggest challenges with the Edge on Oak site is the tight working quarters with the lot lines being very close to a neighboring construction project. Doran Construction worked closely with the city in the review process of the project to avoid any future project delays.

Doran Construction also recently broke ground on the new Menards in Richfield MN. This store consists of 289,553 sq feet and will be completed in November 2012. This will be Doran’s 19th project with Menards. u

The Alexandria (Minnesota) School District has hired KRAUS-ANDERSON CONSTRUCTION COMPANY (KA) as construction manager to build a new $65.15 million senior high school that will house 1,400 students. The new school will be constructed on a 167-acre site located at 50th Avenue & Pioneer Road in Alexandria, and will bring the 9th graders into the high school, which currently serves students in grades 10-12. Construction will start this month and is expected to be completed in time for the beginning of 2014 school year.

The new 280,000-square-foot high school will feature two 3-story academic wings that include 36 classrooms, 12 flexible learning spaces for small and large groups, science labs, technology/engineering lab, art rooms, a media center and special education classrooms. The new facility will also boast new athletic fields and a stadium, an activities wing with a 3-station gymnasium, and a performing arts wing with dedicated music spaces, as well as a 1,000-seat auditorium.

A community resource available to the public and organizations for activities and events, the new facility features an eco-friendly, energy-efficient design with outdoor green areas.

The new school will replace the current facility, which is landlocked and had few options for expansion. Kraus-Anderson was selected through an RFP process in 2010 and has been working

with the school to provide accurate cost analyses through the building referendum process.

“Kraus Anderson has been an essential partner with the new high school project from the beginning and has provided support, key data and expertise that led to a successful referendum,” said Dr. Terry Quist, Alexandria superintendent of schools. “It is reassuring to know that KA will be guiding and managing the construction of this exciting new facility.”

KA has worked closely with the school, architects and the community through user group meetings to help to facilitate the long process, including its conceptual design and development.

“We are extremely pleased to have been selected to build the new high school in Alexandria and commend the district and all the parties that worked hard to approve the facility,” said John Huenink, Kraus-Anderson’s vice president and director of the company’s education group. “We expect the new high school to be an extraordinary educational facility and a beacon in the Alexandria community.” u

GE Capital Fleet Services is fueling the corporate world’s interest in eco-friendly cars. The company opened a first-of-its-kind showroom and test track for alternative fuel vehicles on the campus of GE’s fleet management business headquarters in Eden

Prairie, MN on May 31, 2012.

Over 20 models of alternative fuel vehicles participated in the grand opening, including electric, hybrid, natural gas and other alternative fuel cars and trucks. U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar was among the dignitaries who took the vehicles for a spin along the center’s private half-mile track. The 6,000 s.f., solar-panel-powered vehicle center provides classrooms, showrooms, and fueling stations for the vehicles.

The center also allows visitors access to a variety of products and solutions from GE’s ecomagination portfolio, including solutions for the smart grid, Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations, Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in a Box, fuel savings mobile applications, and other advanced energy and infrastructure technologies.
