Thanks to LuAnn for the good coffee.

Congratulations to Bob Clark on his recent marriage.

Approval of Minutes

A motion was made by Vollie Sanders and seconded by Bob Clark to accept minutes from June 6, 2008 Chapter meeting. Motion approved.

Old Business:

Chapter Vice Presidency Election Results: The results of the motion to elect a chapter senior vice president went out electronically because there was only one candidate for that office. The majority of votes were for Pat Jeukens. The vote did go in Pat's favor for the Vice Presidency. Pat will be retiring February 9, 2009 and will be taking over the leadership of the Metro Life Member Club as well. Will be wearing two hats.

Go Green for Schools: Kathy Hanson passed out handout that describes the Go Green for Schools initiative and a sample of the cell phone recycling bags. The bags come in rolls like paper towels so you can just tear off as needed. The bags are coded so that each state gets its own bag. The Qwest region office has bags coded to them as well. The purpose behind this initiative is to raise money for education. The Qwest employee base is dwindling and some of the funds that we get for chapter operations come from employee dues, also from fundraisers the telecom pioneers send out to people hoping to get back your donations of money. As those resources diminish, we have to find other ways to run the chapters and region offices and this is an answer to that. Not everyone agrees with this process. The money that the chapter gets will go to fund some of our education educational initiatives: buying books for Reading for Life, donate books to library, equipment for playground maps, etc. Individual Chapters can decide what an educational purpose is and what isn't.

Carol Barthel read Dave Hemmer's counter view of recycling plan where he described the EZ Help 911 Cell phone for Seniors Project and how he thought that was a better deal for the Pioneers. (1)

Kathy Hanson responded saying that the region does not want people to discontinue the programs that

Page 2: Minnesota Chapter 18 Qwest Pioneer Executive …mnpioneers.com/minutes/2008 9 12 minutes.pdfcontracts. Those are the CSR elements of the job. Qwest served as official communications

already exist like EZ Help - 911 which does a valuable service in the community. She encouraged us to take bags to meetings and ask people attending the meeting to take a few bags home for recycling any old phones they may have setting around and mail in and see what happens. Kathy feels both the EZ Help-911 and Go Green for Schools programs can run concurrently. We won't know, however, what we are credited with in income until the bag has been in use for at least a couple quarters.

LuAnn Chambliss remarked that Pioneers are not mentioned anywhere on the bag as a partner of the initiative nor was anything mentioned in communications that went out to employees regarding the Pioneers role in the initiative or their being partners. Recommendation made to apply Telecom Pioneer stickers or stamp the bag with Pioneer logo. Would have to get company approval.

Al Barthel requested status of truck, does it have insurance, license, etc. Paula reported that she has been emailing Charlie Hecht regarding the status of the truck. We have paid for the parts $3,686.23, leaving a difference of $2,265.48 that has to be paid. Charlie said it was going to be done. The chapter has not done anything about the license or insurance. The chapter has the title and Paula has a copy of it. Currently the truck is sitting at the fairgrounds with the other museum "stuff and most likely insured only by the fairgrounds. Paula will check on collector’s license and license tabs.

If it is going to sit at the fairgrounds and not move, that would be one kind of insurance, but if it is going to move or people are climbing on it or it’s in a parade - that would be a different kind of insurance.

Kathy Hanson reminded everyone that there is not going to be another museum opened up for us. A sad conclusion to the museum, but space for pioneer projects is an expense that Qwest has to justify. If nothing is coming back to them, then that space diminishes for us.

Harry Osborn thinks we should keep the truck on display or available for future display. Carol Barthel believes it would be more feasible to store in the metro area for easy accessibility. Bob Clark said that it could be used in parades for lots of things as long as it is insured.

Readers for Life Transfer of $2,500 from Chapter Account to Readers for Life Program to pay

for ongoing purchases of books. Kathy Hanson asked Jan Swenson for a ballpark figure costs for 500 books? Jan said that the last purchase was $4,000 for 1,852 books. We do have donated books from City of Hope and Salvation Army, but many are the same book. Kathy Hanson called for the vote on the motion that was tabled to approve transferring $2,500 from the Chapter Account to the Readers for Life Program. Motion approved.

Treasurer's Report: Paula provided a copy of the treasurer's report. This report is as of July 31, 2008.

The balance for Chapter account 100 = $19,289.51

Chapter 105 - Readers for Life Account = $2,992.94

Chapter 110 - Calendar Account = $46,375.41

Councils = $50,995.81

Advances = $1,230.00

Unknown Deposit = $31.95

Paula explained the Chapter Transactions report and asked if anyone knew what the check for $ 103 to

Page 3: Minnesota Chapter 18 Qwest Pioneer Executive …mnpioneers.com/minutes/2008 9 12 minutes.pdfcontracts. Those are the CSR elements of the job. Qwest served as official communications

Safeguard Business was for? Since no one knew, Paula will call Sarah to try to solve the mystery. No big major changes in this budget. Subtracting the $2,265.48 for the truck we are now down to a little over $17,000 in the Chapter account. Submitted by Paula Trapp

Kathy Hanson introduced Wally Milbrandt, from Qwest. Wally is in charge of High Speed Internet for state of Minnesota, metro only, not out state yet. Wally explained some of the initiatives around the advertising of Fiber to the Node (FTTN) taking fiber to the cross box. Corporation-wise, the initiative was a $300M project for 2008. Qwest will be equipping 10 different states in major metro areas, 1.5 million customers in Minnesota. In metro, not out state yet. Maps were passed out showing locations. Program from capital expenditure is on track. Sales wise we started a little slow, Had a good August-about 100% of objective. September numbers are trending at or above objective. This is where the capital focus is.

If you are in out-state greater MN, and you get questions as to why your neighbors or friends cannot get the high-speed internet, it is because we have to look at the size of the cross box. We do have a program called a petition program. If someone is interested they can call Wally, he can research area to see if it meets minimum expectations, if it does, engineers will do cost analysis and then Qwest will tell you how many signatures you need on the petition to get it approved. Once the petition is in, does not mean the customer has to buy and still does not guarantee it will be approved. We still use LAN-based technology so they have a limit physically of how far they can go and financially of how much we can spend. In the metro area primarily there are instances of cap the investment boxes due to putting the next amount of investment in there is not going to be enough return on that investment to justify it is then capped and we have to wait for a customer to disconnect, for someone else to get in.

The focus of all our sales activities is high-speed internet. We continue to visit county fairs, state fairs, home and garden shows. In the metro area we have contractors going out door-to-door six days a week selling faster speed internet. If you go into Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Circuit City all resellers for Qwest services in some shape or form. We also have a distributor program or an authorized reseller for Qwest in small town mom and pop stores where they do not have big box stores. Speeds up to 20 mg, Cable offers a 50 mg product but the average comes in at about 8 mg. Cable still does operate as a party line.

Kathy Hanson introduced Karen Jothen Community Affairs Manager from Qwest. Karen shared information from the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) perspective. Karen reports directly to John Stanoch and has responsibility for the foundation and community elements for the Vikings and Twins contracts. Those are the CSR elements of the job. Qwest served as official communications provider for the RNC, delegates and more than 15,000 visitors to the RNC. On behalf of John Stanoch, Karen thanked everyone for their help in getting the old Pioneer museum space ready for the thousands of volunteers that helped at the RNC and described how fitting it was to have so many volunteers in an area that was once a museum for our Pioneer volunteer organization. Karen will be making some calls to Minnesota Historical Society and the Works Museum in Edina. Perhaps they might be interested in using some of the displaced memorabilia from the Pioneer Museum since we no longer have use of that space. It will be used for meetings with employees and meetings with customers. It is unknown as to who made that decision.

Karen suggested including in agenda item in future to discuss how memorabilia can be utilized in the community, because you definitely want it where the community can enjoy it.

Qwest Foundation is a foundation out of Denver, but Minnesota receives a bucket of money that funds non-profits that support educational initiatives. When reviewing grants the goal is to look for a

program or project that would advance a student's academic achievement. Separate from the foundation where we spend about $200,000, there is another program called Teachers and Technology. Would like you to help get the word out to teachers that money is available. $100,000 for teachers to bring technology to their classrooms. This is the way teachers can move forward, particularly in the STEM area: Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Open only to public school teachers not private. Recognizing teachers finding innovative ways to bring technology to the classroom. You can be awarded up to $7,500. Encourage teachers you know to send in an application, the deadline is November 30l . You can access forms by going to www.qwest.com/foundation and then link down to Teachers and Technology and then to the state. Karen passed out her business card and asked that we call her if we have problems.

Qwest gives back to schools through the 1% Back to School Program. Qwest donates 1% of your Qwest bill, before taxes, every month to the school of your choice if you register your account for paperless billing and AutoPay. But you must go online and choose your school of choice. Just go to the website www.qwest.com/onepercent and select your school district and it is done.

Partnership with Twins and Vikings: Every year Twins organization gives us $100 to give to kids. Four times a year we get 25 tickets to give to a non-profit that work with kids that may never get to

see a Twins games.

Qwest is the official sponsor of the Minnesota Vikings Community Tuesdays. On Tuesdays when the Vikings do not have practice, many of them give of their time to volunteer in the community. Qwest is the official sponsor of that. The Pioneers and Qwest are working with the Vikings to identify with some of those Community Tuesdays that are aligned with our objectives. One example is Readers for Life Program. Either the Vikings or cheerleaders come in to discuss how important reading is to the child's future. This is a program that excels in terms of the involvement of Pioneers in Minnesota. Cindy Barnes Phar is very impressed and is planning to nominate this program for a national award.

Beep Baseball is coming back to Rochester in 2010.

New Business

Kathy Hanson passed out an email from Pat Jeukens regarding the Ronald McDonald House. The Pioneers will be partnering with the St.Paul Qwest Employee Spirit Club to cook and serve a meal at the Ronald McDonald House. The House staff will have to okay the menu. Pat will be calling for volunteers, about 20-25 people needed. Kathy will ask Pat Jeukens what the address is and the minimum age requirement of the volunteers.

Paula Trapp will be stepping down from her position as Treasurer. We appreciate all of the many years that Paula has served and hope she continues as Cook Book Chair and the Scholarship Chair as we appreciate all her efforts. Al Barthel has graciously accepted the position as Treasurer and is anxious to do the job. Thanks Al and thanks to Paula.

Janet Lozon made a motion to give $200 to the University Center for the purchase of children's recreational toys. Janet will purchase toys for the center. Gary Greb seconded. Motion carried.

Calendar Report The last raffle drawing for the 2008 calendar winners was held on August 22, 2008. Today, September 12th, 2008 Caring and sharing calendars will be distributed for sale. Sales end on January 21,2009.

The drawing dates for 2009 are: January 23, 2009 4

April 24. 2009 August 21, 2009

All will be held at Qwest building at 6540 Shingle Creek Parkway, Brooklyn Center, MN. Calendars will be sold for $30.00. 1,800 calendars were printed.

Submitted by: Roger Hanson

Location of extra calendars: Kathy Hanson wondered what the system was when the Metro sends out to the thousands of members a letter soliciting a calendar sale. Where are the boxes of calendars stored until mailed? Bob Clark stores the calendars for the Life Members. Where do the other calendars sit until someone orders them? Jan has calendars in Pioneer office, and calendars will be held by Roger Hanson and Ralph Hunstad. They will be the keepers of most of the spare calendars and should expect to get calls requesting more. Try to keep calendars in 25 or 50 lots.

Awards Report

The deadline is fast approaching for sending in any award write-ups. Two being submitted from the Metro Council and Kathy has submitted at least one. With the size of our Chapter there should be more projects that would qualify for awards so think about your projects and what is being done in our Council and the possibility of getting it submitted for an award. Need to start gathering letters, pictures news articles for next year's awards. Keep records on hours and numbers of volunteers, especially "other" category as hours and numbers will be compared to the PAL report for projects submitted for awards. Deadline to have awards to Denver is October 15th. When you have a project bring up sign-up sheet and get hours recorded and get the numbers to Carol Barthel. Those numbers are important.

Another important component of awards is "what did it do for the company? " Always take pictures, always try to get an article in the paper, call the paper, call the radio station, wear clothes that say Pioneers or Qwest. Include those kinds of documents in the award so Qwest sees that there was a presentation of their commitment to whatever that community service project was. We need to get the company out there because they are our sponsors. Try to get lots of publicity and get those hours in for any service project you want to send in for an award. Also, ask the recipient to send a letter of impact for the community service that was provided.

Readers for Life Event

Lots of fun.. .the Vikings did a lot of pre-work on it. Kathy was there, Auditorium filled with kids they sang songs and were so full of pride. They marched in and put books in box that were for kids in Africa. It is really fun to watch the kids and how they were just as excited about the books as the Vikings. Very pilot, very well-mannered kids too

Last summer Joe Swenson, Jan Swenson & Donna Ness picked up books at the Scholastic Book Fair Sale to supplement what we had left from the 2007 - 2008 School year. Friday, August 29th Donna Ness, Roger Hanson, Joe & Jan Swenson sorted the books picked up from Scholastic book and set aside 600 books for the September 3 presentation. In addition, Jan pulled 2 of each of the donated books from the Salvation Army for the School Library.

Wednesday Sept. 3 we had our first "Readers for Life" presentation with the Vikings Players Darren Sharper, Tyrell Johnson, Garrett Mill, Bobby Wade and Viktor (Viking Mascot) at the Harvest Prep Seed Academy in Minneapolis. The students donated gently used text books to go to the "Books for Africa" Program. Kathy Hanson, Donna Ness (dressed as the Cat in the Hat), Cindy Barnes Pharr (dressed as Spirit), Karen Jothen, Joe Swenson and Jan Swenson were there for the presentation along 5

with 5 Vikings Players and the Vikings PR person. The numbers we were giver were shy of the actual students so Joe & Jan picked out the other 160 books and brought those over later. Our Qwest Pioneers donated 760 books to Kindergartners through 7th Grade Students and their School Library. Below is the write up from the Vikings Web Page.

We still have plenty of books to donate and will be looking for the different councils to check for schools in their areas to do similar presentations. Last school year we did presentations Bancroft School in Minneapolis, Lincoln School in St. Cloud. Roosevelt School in Faribault and Riverside Central Elementary School in Rochester. We started this program in Minnesota with $7500 from the Qwest Foundation and have put $4500 in from Chapter funds. It sounds like we may be getting more funds later this fall from the Qwest Foundation.

Cindy Barnes Pharr is hoping that the "Readers for Life"' Program in Washington, Colorado. Arizona and Minnesota will be chosen for an Award at the Telecom Pioneer Program this February 2009 at a Chapter Level. She was very impressed with what Minnesota has done and plans to highlight some of the presentations we have done at the Region Training in October.

Here is a list of books that have been donated by either the Salvation Army or City of Hope to be used for "Readers for Life", "Birthday in a Bag" and other Pioneer Projects. The ones that are limited will go to "Readers for Life" and "Birthday in a Bag" projects first.

EZ Help 911 Cell Phones for Seniors

75 cell phones given out in White Bear Lake. 150 Cell phones given to the White Bear lake VFW to get calling cards for the troops. 60 cell phones given to New Hope Community Church for their fund raising efforts for community projects. We are currently in the process of changing over previously handed out analog cell phones, from past years, to digital cell phones due to the change to all digital in February 2009. 6

Page 7: Minnesota Chapter 18 Qwest Pioneer Executive …mnpioneers.com/minutes/2008 9 12 minutes.pdfcontracts. Those are the CSR elements of the job. Qwest served as official communications

There has been a lot of discussion and a lot of confusion about the Qwest project called ';Go for the Green"' where cell phones are collected by Qwest, at Qwest locations, and the funds given to schools of your choice for literacy programs. Referencing the Go for Green handout, Gary suggests that it is more profitable to send in the older phones to the 911 Cell Phone project because according to the letter they do not give money for the older phones and they only take Qwest phones. Since Minnesota is the only state in the 14-state area that has an active cell phone recycling program, Crystal Adams said we could continue going on as we are going forward. Those councils that currently do not recycle cell phones in association with the EZ Help project can choose which program they prefer to go with.

Submitted by Gary Greb

Kathy reminded everyone that the Going Green Program will be bringing in money for the Pioneer education programs as other funding resources continue to diminish and believes the two programs can co-exist.

Carol Barthel thanked everyone for helping with jerseys for the MS Tram riders. At times, trying to get things accomplished, was somewhat of a fiasco, but worked with John Stanoch's office and they were a lot of help also very pleased with his enthusiasm. Thanks to Kathy Hanson for biking to make up for the other rider. Kathy did a fantastic job.

Looking over the July minutes, Paula was wondering about Dave Hemmer's motion for $100 to go to the MS Society because she never received any vouchers for that. Also, questioned the motion Harry made for the president to spend $500 for the 2008 year. Kathy has not sent in a voucher for items taken to Duluth for the motorcycle ride. The $100 was for the MS Tram riders fees. Dave had to use his own credit card and may have not sent in voucher yet either.

Gary Greb made motion for $1,000 to go to JDRF Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund Walk in January 2009. Harry Osborn has seconded motion. Motion was tabled until next meeting.

Next meeting is Friday, November 7, 2008

Jan Swenson made a motion to adjourn meeting. Elsa Ditty seconded motion. Meeting adjourned.

Metro Life Member Club,

I have been on the job for eight months and the one thing that stands out to me is that the Spirit of Pioneering is alive and well. 2008 has been a very interesting year for me and a year with many rewards. As we approach fall we can look back and see many who have been touched by the Qwest Pioneer Metro Life Member Club. Our north and south Hug-a-Bear groups continue to make and supply those furry little bears. We have given our time and efforts painting at a Veterans Home, selling roses for ARC, our "cookie ladies" baked thousands of cookies sent to Iraq with "Project Share". We have walked golf courses, rode bicycles, put on silent auctions, answered phones, stuffed envelopes, attended meetings and that's only some of what our life member pioneers have done so far in 2008.

We also had some fun. We had a wonderful Valentines day party, then a casino trip to Wisconsin. Many of us laughed ourselves silly watching "Church Basement Ladies II" at the Plymouth Playhouse. That is a full 2008 right there and we still have four months left. Well, I am here to announce that we'll have more of the same to finish out the year. We have luncheon meetings September 24th and November 26th at Elsies (see flyer). We'll be feeding a large group of people at McDonald House December 9*. We are going to the Old Log Theater in October to see "Unnecessary Farce" (see flyer) and back to that Wisconsin casino in November (see flyer). Don't forget the Councils Holiday party in December, and once again that doesn't begin to mention everything our Pioneers do. This year we will once again be selling the Caring and Sharing Calendars as a fundraiser. Remember, every penny raised goes back into the community as well as four $1000 scholarships

Now the only question is do you want to be part of it. There are many new retirees out there who will be reading this. Check us out. See where you can give of Yourself. You'll never regret it. To you Pioneer veterans all I can say is a heartfelt Thank You and a Job Well Done. I hope to see many of you at the September meeting. 10,000 Lakes Family Campers - Fall 2008

The Family Campers participated in the MS Tram, July 20 to the 25th We had 7 couples and Ralph Judd working our famous Rest stop three along with a number of volunteers from the pioneers. A grand time was had by the group and we once again made rest stop three the envy of all the people who participate.

In August the Family Campers had 13 couples participate in the fall Camporee. We toured the Homecrest Factory and also the tree house of Wadena featured on the Jason Davis TV Show. Bill Lovegren was named the Wagon master for the year 2009.

We made a donation to the Sunnybrook Campground of Wadena of $100and also a donation of $100 to the Charity of the Hosts Choice. The Hosts were Gary & Marie Babcock, Their choice for donation was the Food Shelf sponsored by the Peace Lutheran Church.

The Pioneer Family Campers Mystery Trip will be this coming week. The hosts are Barb & Dave Hemmer

3rd QUARTER EZ HELP 911 CELL PHONES FOR SENIORS PROJECT REPORT

75 CELL PHONES GIVEN OUT IN WHITE BEAR LAKE.

150 CELL PHONES GIVEN TO THE WHITE BEAR LAKE VFW TO GET CALLING CARDS FOR THE TROOPS.

60 CELL PHONES GIVEN TO NEW HOPE COMMUNITY CHURCH FOR THEIR FUND RAISING EFFORTS FOR

COMMUNITY PROJECTS.

WE ARE CURRENTLY IN THE PROCESS OF CHANGING OVER PREVIOUSLY HANDED OUT ANALOG CELL

PHONES FROM PAST YEARS, FOR DIGITAL CELL PHONES DUE TO THE CHANGE TO ALL DIGITAL IN

FEBRUARY 2009.

THERE HAS BEEN A LOT OF CONCERN ABOUT THE QWEST PROJECT CALLED "GO FOR THE GREEN"

WHERE CELL PHONES ARE COLLECTED BY QWEST AT QWEST LOCATIONS, AND THE FUNDS GIVEN TO A

SCHOOL OF YOUR CHOICE FOR LITERACY PROGRAMS.

I HAVE HAD A LONG CONVERSATION WITH CRYSTAL ADAMS, AND SHE ASSURED ME THAT SINCE

MINNESOTA IS THE ONLY STATE IN THE 14 STATE AREA TFIAT HAS AN ACTIVE CELL PHONE

RECYLCING PROGRAM GOING ON, THAT WE CAN CONTINUE DOING AS WE ARE. CRYSTAL EXPLAINED

THAT IT WOULD NOT BE COST EFFECTIVE TO PUBLISH EXCEPTIONS ON DOCUMENTS FOR THE "GO FOR

THE GREEN" PROGRAM JUST FOR MINNESOTA.

THOSE COUNCILS THAT CURRENTLY DO NOT RECYLE CELL PHONES IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE EZ

HELP PROJECT CAN CHOOSE WHICH PROGRAM THEY PREFER TO GO WITH.
