I will …Keep the rules,Keep faith with my teammates,Keep my temper,Keep myself fit,Keep a stout heart in defeat,Keep my pride under in victory,Keep a sound soul,

a clean mind,and a healthy body.

Pat Collins FieldOpening in 1995, Pat Collins Field is the gem of the Lakes Area baseball programs, playing host to high school,Legion, VFW, and Town Team games. But, if you talk to those who treasure the field, the bigger gem is the manbehind it Pat Collins.

Collins came to Chisago Lakes in the late 80's, after having graduated from St. Cloud State in 1983 and spendinghis first few year as a science teacher in Sleepy Eye where he also assisted with the high school baseballprogram. He became the head baseball coach at Chisago Lakes in 1990, and he dedicated himself to not onlyimproving a struggling high school program (accumulating a 268 154 record and five conference championshipsin his 21 year career), but also to reviving the Chisago Lakes American Legion and VFW programs.

Most would agree that one of Collins' most monumental accomplishments, however, was setting his mind tobuilding a new high school baseball field in the middle of a corn field. Leading a group of dedicatedvolunteers, Collins was known to have personally traveled far and wide to barter and bargain for many of thematerials himself including the light stanchions.

Although he loves baseball, Collins has always kept the importance of education in proper perspective; he hassaid that he is a science teacher who has happened to also coach baseball. In 2008, he challenged his middleschool students to raise the money and undertake a community service project to install a 44 panel solar arrayon their school. They sold T shirts, held dances, and organized a 5K run. It happened. And, today, roughly adecade later, nearly 1,000 solar panels sit atop the roofs of the District's five schools, thanks to Collins' initialleadership.

In recognition of his contributions, Collins was inducted into the Minnesota State High School Baseball CoachesAssociation Hall of Fame in 2014. He served as the MSHSBCA President from 2008 to 2010, coached in the AllStar Series, and he has been a long time MN Twins Clinician, as well as working Gopher baseball camps.

Please enjoy your time at Pat Collins Field, as well as in the beautiful city of Lindstrom which offers a greatdeal of fine and hospitable establishments at which to eat and shop.

On behalf of Minnesota American Legion Baseball and ourparticipating teams, welcome to the annualSub State #8 Playoff Tournament!

To reach this point in the season, many hours of volunteer servicehave been contributed by a number of people particularly byteam managers, coaches, and administrators. I hope that you willtake a moment to thank them for their time and effort, before theconclusion of this tournament.

In addition, all of the local American Legion Posts that sponsor our participating teams are owed agreat deal of gratitude. Without their support and involvement, this program would not be possible. In addition to sponsoring the Baseball Program, the American Legion has an exceptional history ofhelping to keep our communities strong, through a multitude of community and youth serviceprograms. Therefore, I would encourage you to thank them by patronizing your local American Legionand by considering membership in the American Legion (if you are a veteran yourself) or in the

American Legion Auxiliary or the Sons of the American Legion (if a family member is a veteran.)Contact your local American Legion Post for further information.

I would like to thank the fine businesses and organizations listed later in this souvenir program fortheir support of this tournament, the St. Paul Municipal Umpire Association, and the Chisago Lakesand Tri City Red teams for making their fields available to all of us.

Lastly, the success of the American Legion Baseball program in our area would not be possiblewithout the support of parents and fans. So, thank you! Please consider continuing your support ofthe Program, even after your family's participation has ended, so that we can keep it strong for futuregenerations of ball players.

Enjoy the tournament and the best of luck to all participating teams !!!!

American Legion Baseball History & Facts

American Legion Baseball has been, and continues to be, atradition rich stepping stone to adulthood for millions ofAmerican youth, who have gone on to serve their country orcommunity, raise families and / or play the sport at thehighest level …

American Legion Baseball is considered to be the largest, oldest and most successful organized youth baseballprogram in the United States. All 50 states participate, aswell as Puerto Rico. Almost 72,000 players are rostered annually on over 4,000 teams. Sinceits formal inception in 1926, over 10 million players have participated and it is considered tobe a primary vehicle for players to develop their skills and achieve visibility with college andpro scouts.

American Legion Baseball has enjoyed a exceptionally strong tradition in Minnesota. (Someteams actually trace their continuous participation all the way back to 1923.) Minnesota’sfirst State Tournament was held in Mankato in 1926, and it has been held every year since, making Minnesota one of only three states in the nation that has held a tournament everyyear since the program’s national inception in 1926. In 1959, Minnesota topped the nation,by having more registered American Legion teams than any other state. The State held thisdistinction for nine years. Pennsylvania then surpassed Minnesota, with Minnesota beingsecond for many years.

In 2014, however, Minnesota again topped the nation, having 306 teams;Pennsylvania was second with 299 teams, Nebraska was third with 281,Wisconsin was fourth with 207, and Illinois was fifth with 163. Minnesotahas led the nation since, with 325 350 teams registering annually. Therehas also been significant growth in the number of Junior Legion teams (16year olds), both in Minnesota and nationally.

Division I Sub State Playoff Tournament Champions from across Minnesota, as well as a hostteam, then compete in the annual 16 team Legion State Tournament (largest in the nation) todetermine the State Champion. (A Division II State Tournament is also held annually, as wellas Division I and II Jr. Legion State Tournaments.)

State Champs advance to one of eight Regional Tournaments held across the nation. A Hostteam, each State Champion, plus Runners up from several states, including Minnesota, makeup the 64 teams that compete in the eight team double elimination Regional Tournaments.(Minnesota’s Division I Champion and its Division I Runner up both advance to the CentralPlains Regional Tournament, because of the high number of registered teams in Minnesota.)Regional Champions then compete in the World Series of American Legion Baseball, todetermine the annual National Champion. Minnesota has produced five National Champions,as follows:

Minneapolis Richfield Post 435 in 1943;Edina Post 471 in 1983;New Brighton Post 513’s Tri City Red in 1999,Rochester Post 592’s Rochester A’s in 2003, andEden Prairie in 2011.

In 2002, Excelsior Post 259 was the National Runner up; in 2007and 2010, Eden Prairie was the National Runner up.

Minnesota also sends a Division II team and a Junior Legion teamto regional tournaments; there is no nationally sponsoredChampionship Tournament for Division II or Junior Legion at this time, however.
