irst Reading: Numbers 11:25-29

All of this weekend’s Bible readings discuss aspects of the life of a faith community. The Hebrew Scripture reading reminds us that God bestows gifts within the community as God wills. God’s spirit is not restricted by our petty preferences or wishes.

econd Reading: James 5:1-6

This reading from the Letter of James is a prophetic indictment against those who are unjust and greedy. The community of Jesus must constantly examine its own behavior in terms of justice and care for the weak.

ospel: Mark 9:38-48

The need for constant, personal self-assessment is a major feature of this passage from the Gospel of Mark.

We invite you to prayerfully reflect on the Readings for the week of September 27

PERFORM A MIGHTY DEED TODAY

"There is no one who performs a mighty deed in my name who can at the same time speak ill of me . . .

"Anyone who gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ, amen, I say to you, will surely not lose his reward . . . "(Mark 9: 38-43, 45, 47-48)

Jesus encourages us to perform mighty deeds in his name; every day we have opportunities to accomplish this with the people and circumstances we encounter. Here is a reflection I hope you will enjoy. Years ago, there was a poor farmer who was a heavy drinker. When he went on a bender (which happened fairly often), he'd become abusive, forcing his family to escape into their cornfield, with him frequently shooting after them with his .22 rifle. One day, their neighbor, an elderly Amish farmer, came by. He explained that rats had been in his corncrib and asked if the farmer knew anyone who could sell him a .22. A bargain was struck and the old Amish farmer took the rifle and ammunition and set off home. One of the poor farmer's children followed the Amish farmer from a distance and watched him cross the river bridge. The old man stopped midstream and the boy watched him drop the rifle and ammunition into the swift water and then continue home. [James Didlow, writing in Reader's Digest.] The Amish farmer's generosity of heart and humility of spirit to buy and destroy the rifle is the "cup of water" that Jesus speaks of in today's Gospel: a reflection of the compassion that Christ asks of all who would be his followers. Jesus promises us that even the simplest act of love and kindness will one day be honored by God. Anyone and everyone in need or in trouble have a claim on our compassion and charity because they belong to Christ. In whatever opportunities we have, with whomever we meet and are able to help: may we not hesitate to act in Jesus' name. (Connections)

In Christ’s Peace, Father John

AN APOLOGY TO BEN EDWARDS, JOHN MONTFORT AND MATT MAHONEY

(No good deed goes unpunished.) I write to apologize publicly to Ben Edwards, John Montfort and Matt Mahoney and their families because I made a

mistake last Sunday night at the Youth Mass when I reprimanded them for coming to Mass late and leaving and returning. I did not know that Lisa Sullivan, our Youth Minister, had asked them to assist her by moving the Youth Catechisms into the sacristy for her. I should have asked them for an explanation first. When I learned this I apologized to them in the sacristy but I wanted to use this space to express my regret because my initial remarks to them were overheard in the back of the church. Another mistake! I am sorry for this and have expressed this to them via letters this past week. These three young gentlemen actively participate in our Sunday night Masses and I am grateful to them for their good

example to others and all their good work. Sincerely yours in Christ, Father John

AVOID SCANDALIZING OTHERS

The issue of scandal is very serious. Sadly, we have become accustomed to hearing or reading about scandals every day in the news. For most of us they have become an inevitable part of living. Jesus took scandals very seriously.

Adults: Have I ever scandalized anyone with my behavior at home, workplace or parish?

Children: Does it bother me when another child takes the glory for something I did? How do I react in those situations?

A Family Perspective: The second part of today's Gospel contains a strong message for those who share the responsibility of fostering faith. It is indeed an awesome responsibility. Today's Gospel reminds us that faith is a lifelong journey toward God. We don't always get it all or even get it right. But we pray for the grace to acknowledge and build upon even the smallest signs of faith, in ourselves and in others. There are plenty of obstacles that might prevent the growth of faith. Let us pray that we are not contributing to the obstacles that might hinder another person's faith in Jesus. As you gather as a family, observe that there are things in our lives that nurture our faith and things that can hinder it. Talk about some of the things that nurture our faith—healthy family relationships, healthy friendships, good literature, and so on. Name some of the things that might be an obstacle to faith—unhealthy relationships, scandals, and so on. Observe that Jesus teaches us in today's Gospel that we are to do everything we can to help one another have faith in Jesus and do all that we can to avoid creating obstacles that might hinder another person's faith.

Funds are used for no other purpose. Note, also, that all funds raised for the Paterson Diocese stay in the Paterson Diocese. Please make a pledge to the Bishops Annual Appeal today.
