Principal’s Message Mining the Promise of the Future Information for families of students at Mercury Mine Elementary School in Phoenix, Arizona January 2020 Volume 61 I would like to take this time to let you know that it is always such a pleasure to walk into classrooms and see students diligently learning. As parents you entrust your students to us each day. It is a privilege for us to see them grow and become such unique individuals who will be sharing their talents out in the world before we know it. Our job is hard work, but it is also fun. Our Winter Marketplace was so much fun and a great success. These events are possible because of hard-working parents and volunteers. I would like to thank Lisa Stein for all her planning and preparation. Eli Grieff and Patrick Blanton also put in countless hours organizing the Foam Party. Emily Grieff devoted a great deal of her time as well. We always appreciate our dedicated parents and volunteers. Our Parent Teacher Conference Week is January 27-31. Thursday and Friday, the 30th and 31st, are early dismissal days with school dismissal at 12:30 p.m. Our late night conferences will be Wednesday the 29th. I hope everyone can schedule a time to visit with their child’s teacher. Paperwork for signup should be sent home any day. Our Book Fair is the same week, which our students love. Our Kindergarten Open House is Wednesday, February 5 from 6:00-7:00 p.m. If you know of any neighbors or friends who might have an incoming kindergartner, please have them attend with their child. We have them tour the campus with their passports. It is a fun way for them to see the school and ask questions of staff members and PTG parents. I would like to take this time to let you know that it is always such apleasure to walk into classrooms and see students diligently learning.As parents you entrust your students to us each day. It is a privilege for us to see them grow and become such unique individuals who will besharing their talents out in the world before we know it. Our job is hard work, but it is also fun.

Our Winter Marketplace was so much fun and a great success. Theseevents are possible because of hard-working parents and volunteers. Thank you to everyone who participated in the Fun Run.We may hit $60,000 as final donations trickle in, and havecollected just past $59,000. Wow! We thank everyone for their support of our school. We are always blown away by

the generosity and dedication of our families. We feel sofortunate to attend a school that is able to provide so many enrichment opportunities for the students due to the funds donated to PTG.

February 29 (Leap Year Day)

Spring Fling is coming soon! On the field we will havebounce houses, activities, and food trucks. In the cafeteria we will have the Silent Auction and Class Basket fundraiser. Wristbands for unlimited bounce house access will be on sale for $10. A portion of all sales from the foodtrucks will come back to PTG, and all proceeds from thesilent auction and raffle ticket sales benefit PTG. Scholastic Book Fair Our annual Scholastic Book Fair is a reading event thatprovides kids books in their excitement zone! Make plans to visit our Book Fair, January 27-30 and come for Family Night during conference week.

5K Community Run 2020 The annual PVSchools Community 5K

Run will take place

Saturday, February 8, 2020

at Horizon High School.

More than 1,000 runners will participate in this great

event, aimed at encouraging active lifestyles for our staff,

Spelling Bee Results Congratulations to Megan Brindle, our new

MMES Spelling Bee champion after 25 rounds. Our runner-up was Kenji Smith, who cheered when Meganwon, and was a great sport. Megan will represent MMES atthe District Spelling Bee on January 17. Congratulations to all the students who participated.

Fine Arts News Honor Orchestra

chosen for District Honor Orchestra:

Annika Gulchak, violin I; Kayla Rice, violin II; Sam Kilby,viola; Elise Mitchell, cello; Ava Grossmiller, cello.

Honor Orchestra rehearsals are at the Shadow Mountain High School auditorium on Friday and Saturday, February 8-9. The concert is on Saturday at 1:00 p.m., with freeadmission. Elementary, middle school, and high schoolhonor orchestras will be performing.

Honor Band

The District Honor Band concert will be held Saturday,January 18 at 1:00 at Pinnacle High School. Admission is free.

PV Sights and Sounds

Mark your calendar for the upcoming PV Sights andSounds with art exhibits March 6-8 and band, string, andchoir performances March 7 at Paradise Valley Mall.

Japanese phrases, learning to write their names in hiragana, will compare Japan’s two main religions (Shinto and Buddhism),and are discussing the power structure ofJapan’s Feudal Society. Students are introduced to the roles of Emperor,Shogun, Daimyo, and Samurai. Students will hear stories of Samurai and their demanding code of behavior. After reading

excerpts from the Handbook for Samurai, they will bechallenged to write their own code by which to live. Japanwas closed to outsiders for nearly 200 years, and this isolationism kept traditions and culture strong. As a culminating project, students will research and present aform of traditional Japanese art. There will be Shinto Shrines, Samurai Armor, Noh Masks, Bunraku Puppets,and Kabuki Theater Performances. Ureshii!

Spring After-School Club Registration is Coming! Packets will be sent home on Thursday, January 9. Registration will begin on Thursday,January 16 at 8:00 a.m. in the Media Center. Some clubs will fill that morning. No early

registrations will be accepted. Spring clubs will meet from Monday, February 3 until Thursday, May 14. Fall clubs will continue to meet in January and will end on Thursday, January 23.

Preschool Universe January 21, 2020

Preschool Universe is a district-wide event hosted by Community Education to introduce families to the comprehensive early childhood (ages birth through five) programming available in our district. The event will be held at 5:30-7:00p.m. on Tuesday, January 21, 2020 at Fireside Elementary School. Please share this information with anyone who is looking for preschool options.
