Modular supply unit

Optimised for flexible lighting of patient rooms

The patient’s well-being greatly influences the progress of recovery. Optimal lighting of the room essentially contributes to the patient feeling safe and snug even in an unfamiliar environment. At the same time, perfect lighting conditions need to be created in patient rooms for nursing staff and doctors. These are differing require-ments easily met by SINUS: depending on whether LED modules are switched individually or jointly, SINUS assumes the task of reading, ambient or examination lighting.

The electrically movable LED boards inside the horizontal supply unit allow for maximum flexibility when determining room layouts: the lighting can be adjusted to the arrangement and number of beds using a selector switch. In addition, SINUS featuring tunable-White technology allows implementation of biologically effective lighting concepts that synchronise the patients’ circadian rhythm with the natural course of daylight. To preserve the uncluttered appearance of SINUS, all supply components except for the gas outlets are recessed into the underside.

SINUS SLSlimline design with great potential

With its understated, slimline stylistic idiom, the SINUS SL single-bed LED luminaire presents itself as a flexible technological supply system and design element in one unit. Equipped with top-quality LED technology, the luminaire is available in a standard length of 1150 mm for single beds and is suitable for configurations of up to 6 m for multi-bed rooms. Individual switching and dim-ming is possible just as well as calling up individual lighting scenes. Optionally available in two colour temperatures, the flexible SINUS SL luminaire is able to comply with all requirements in patients’ rooms or care facilities as needed. As regards room lighting with indirect light component for low-shadow lighting, there is a choice of combinations from 4000 K with 6440 lm and 3000 K with 6020 lm. The reading light with direct light distribution (1010 lm at 4000 K or 940 lm at 3000 K) creates pleasant reading conditions. The combination of room lighting and reading light ensures perfect lighting for examinations, without causing glare for the person lying in bed.

Light colour and dynamic lighting scenes have a positive influence on the biological well-being of patients and staff in hospitals and nursing homes. This has been shown by international studies as well as research conducted by Zumtobel. This aspect of promoting convalescence is taken into account by the SINUS SL bedside LED luminaire featuring tunableWhite technology. Its colour temperature can be continuously adjusted between 3000 K and 6000 K, without any changes in the colour rendering index of Ra > 80. This also allows gentle waking using light.

The optional night light offers adequate safety during the night. The slimline SINUS SL luminaires are made of extruded aluminium section with die-cast aluminium end pieces and dispose of a slanted top cover and rounded corners for easy cleaning. Optionally, form-fit electrical components such as socket outlets, data outlets or nurse call combinations can be added.

Light in TimeBiological lighting effect

The specific DIN SPEC design recommendations for biologically ef-fective lighting combine innovative technological options and cur-rent research findings. The solution approach described here is based on the simulation of daylight, which stabilises people’s circa-dian rhythm. Depending on the season, the geographical position, the weather situation and the distance from the window, this biolog-ically effective light may be missing. Problems may arise above all in zones far away from windows, or during long stays in care facilities, where natural light is not available in sufficient amounts. In this case, biologically effective artificial lighting solutions are the key to stimulate activity during the day and ensure a sound sleep at night. For purposes of lighting design, not the traditional illuminance level in the task area is decisive, but spectral distribution and vertical illu-minance at eye level, which have an impact on people, among other factors (see table). Apart from biological effectiveness, emotional lighting effects also play an important role. Although clearly bluish light colours, for instance, may create a stabilising and stimulating emotional effect at the right moment, they may not be accepted when the sun is shining, as various studies have shown. What is more is that, in healthcare settings, bluish light exceeding 6000 K is not very flattering to the complexion. Therefore the aim must be to harmonise the visual, emotional and biological effects of light.

DIN SPEC 67600:2013-04 provides for design reliability and includes specific application recommendations for integral lighting concepts with biological effects.

• During the dark winter months, no daylight is availa-ble in indoor areas to synchronise people’s circadian rhythm.

• Biologically effective artificial lighting solutions based on daylight stabilise people’s circadian rhythm.

• Artificial lighting with large bluish components is bio-logically effective at defined times of the day. However, every individual prefers different light col-ours, which have to be carefully taken into account in healthcare settings.

Stimulation in the morningColour temperature: 5000 KEh* (daylight and artificial lighting): more than 500 lx

Aim: synchronisation of people's circadian rhythm, complete suppression of melatonin release

* Eh = horizontal illuminance

During the day at sunshineColour temperature: 4000 KEh* (daylight and artificial lighting): more than 1000 lx

Aim: enhancing well-being through well-matched colour tem-perature, accordingly warmer light colours during sunshine

6 000 K 3 000 K

A growing demand for biologically effective light results from the age distribution of those in need of care: vision deteriorates with age, and the effectiveness of light is additionally impaired by cloud-ed lenses known as cataract. This affects mainly the transmission of the bluish, low-wave spectral component. The melanopsin-con-taining ganglion cells are not addressed to optimum effect, which has a negative effect on the stabilisation of the circadian rhythm. This deficit can be compensated for by a higher dose of biologically effective light. If no intensive outdoor stays are possible, light-in-time concepts may be helpful, as demonstrated in a study conduct-ed by Zumtobel at the St. Katharina nursing home in Vienna. The biologically effective artificial lighting solution has a positive effect on those in need of care as well as on the nursing staff, resulting among others in improved sleep and more frequent participation in social activities. This concept is essentially based on tunableWhite technology using variable light colours and illuminance levels, sup-plemented by matching luminaires and the right time schedule.

During the day with cloudy skyColour temperature: 6000 KEh* (daylight and artificial lighting): more than 800 lx

Aim: enhancing well-being through well-matched colour tem-perature, accordingly cooler light colours with overcast sky

Getting ready for sleepColour temperature: 3000 KEh* (daylight and artificial lighting): more than 500 lx

Aim: synchronisation of the circadian rhythm, no interference with melatonin release, restful sleep

SINUS basic

SINUS move

SINUS flex SINUS flex opens up totally new freedom with respect to room design. LED modules with indirect light distribution that extend along the entire length of SINUS flex provide for perfect illumination of the room down to the last corner. Generously fitted with several LED modules with direct light distribution, almost completely free arrangement of the beds in the room is possible. Thanks to this flexibility, SINUS flex also assumes, for instance, the lighting and medical sup-ply of a third bed in two-bed rooms. Depending on the switching of the direct and indirect LED modules, the system will always supply the perfect lighting scene for the respective situation.

SINUS Systematic flexibility

Thanks to individually switchable LED modules inside the supply unit, SINUS basic effortlessly copes with various lighting tasks: two centrally placed LED modules with direct light distribution for reading light provide for high-quality illumi nation of the bed and reading area. An LED insert, extendable at will and emanating indirect light in an upward direction, allows for pleasantly diffuse room lighting. The combined switching of reading light and room light creates perfect lighting conditions for examinations.

Just like SINUS basic, SINUS move assumes various lighting tasks according to the switching mode of the direct and indirect LED modules. In doing so, the horizontal supply unit provides perfect lighting conditions for patients and staff. The lighting solution owes its name “move” to the four integrated LED modules for reading light: the LED modules with a length of 300 mm may be switched at will along the supply unit through a selector switch. This allows for better illumi-nation of the patient’s bed and flexible arrangement of the beds.

Owing to individual switching of the 300 mm long LED modules arranged in a row, variable positioning of the reading light depending on the respective posi-tion of the beds is possible. Based on this new flexibility, not only costs can be reduced, but the patients’ comfort can also be increased: SINUS individually adjusts to the patients’ needs. Even two beds put together, as it is frequently found in mother & child wards, can be illuminated perfectly. Regardless of the daily challenges occurring in hospital lighting, the staff will be able to adjust SINUS to the new lighting requirements. Without any installation effort. Even if all of a sudden, SINUS is required to illuminate an extra bed …

LED lighting modules inte-grated into the supply unit are immediately available if required, for instance when a third bed is added to the room.

In daily hospital routine, capacity bottlenecks occur regularly. For instance, altera tion works or an unexpectedly high number of new admissions may require an extra bed to be placed in a 2-bed room. The lighting and supply of the extra bed have so far only been possible at high cost and with compro-mises as to quality. Equipped with flexibly controllable LED modules for reading light and a continuous LED insert for room lighting, SINUS flex effortlessly adjusts the lighting to the changed number of beds. The medical components are positioned individually in the supply unit according to the customer’s require ments. For SINUS is not a standard product, but an optimised solution for the respective hospital.

Reading light

Many patients spend the major part of their hospital stay in bed. With its direct distribution LED inserts, SINUS pleasantly illumi nates the reading area with an average illuminance level of 300 lux. Precise, asym-metrical light control with perfect glare control guarantees that neither the patient nor his/her neighbour or hospital staff will be subject to any glare.

Room light

Asymmetrical, indirect light distribution pro-vides for pleasant diffuse light throughout the room, creating a natural atmosphere. The standard LED insert is 1500 mm long, and may be extended with modules in lengths of 1000 mm and 1250 mm. In this way it is ensured that SINUS will always provide illuminance of 100 lux required for general lighting in patient rooms according to EN standards.

15

Examination light

For doctors’ visits, examinations or medical treatments, glare-free lighting with high illuminan ce and excellent colour rendering is indispensable. Using a sophisticated combi-nation of indirect room light and controllable direct light, SINUS creates ideal lighting conditions for doctors and nursing staff. Combined switching of reading light and room light provides an average illuminance level of 300 lux across the bed – ideal lighting conditions for examinations.

Optional: night light

In order to make it easier for both nursing staff and patients to find their way in the room during the night, SINUS is fitted with an LED insert for night light. A maximum illuminan ce level of 5 lux, directly emanated, ensures that the light source never causes any glare but offers maximum safety, day and night.

SINUS from the topQuick access to lighting modules and supply components

Glare-free diffuserThe medical supply unit is covered with a glare-free diffuser seamlessly fitted over the entire length, at an inclination angle of 7 degrees. The material can be cleaned with commercially available cleaning agents and disinfectants.

Not only the installation, also the maintenance and care of SINUS are very simple: all electrical system components are easily accessible from the top. With just a few movements, and the use of adequate tools, trained and skilled staff can remove the diffuser and the LED room lighting insert below. After doing so, all mains power and low-voltage system components are freely accessib le. According to requirements under the relevant standards, both the mains power cables and the low-voltage and data cables are laid in separate cable ducts. Even the copper pipes for the tubing of the gas and oxygen outlets are freely accessible from the top and accommodated in a separately laid separation duct.

17

LED room lighting module The indirect LED lighting insert with asymmetrical beam pattern for room lighting consists of an extruded aluminium section with aluminium end pieces, and can be removed easily for installation and maintenance work. The supply unit may either be fitted with individual LED inserts per bed or with LED inserts that extend over the entire length. The lighting inserts are available in lengths of 1500 mm, 1250 mm and 1000 mm.

Medical gasesEach bed can be supplied with up to three different medical gases. The gases are carried in copper tubing with a dia metre of 8–12 mm from the central connection point to the respective supply point. The copper pipes used as well as their design are compliant with the required standards.

Central electric feedThe wiring is carried in separate cable ducts made of flame-retardant plastic up to the central connection point or is carried uninterrupted. All mains power as well as low-voltage system components can be installed and distributed flexibly over the entire length of the supply unit, except for the connection point.

Front-end side, scale 1 : 2

Selector switch for reading and examination lightBy turning the function switch, doctors and nursing staff can adjust the position of the reading light to the location of the bed quickly.

LED lighting module Reading/examination light The basic version of the LED reading light with asymmetrical beam pattern is 600 mm long. The “move” version is 1200 mm and the “flex” version is 1500 mm long. Optimal direction of light, and glare control in conformity with relevant standards are effected through a specially developed metallised miniature louvre. The reading light area is covered along the entire length of the supply unit and can accordingly be cleaned very easily.

Communication systemsMedical devices and communication equipment can be integrated into the supply unit discreetly. Zumtobel installs and wires all commercially available makes at the factory. For example:• Nurse call / emergency call • Diagnostic call• TV/radio broadcast• Data outlets• Network connections• Telephone outlets

SINUS from the bottomIndividual positioning of supply connections

Since the LED boards for reading and examination light are exclusively accom-modated in the front area of the supply unit, the entire length of SINUS – except for the area of the supply outlets – is freely available for fitting the components. The free arrangement hugely extends the scope of planning and allows for very generous as well as flexible fitting with supply components for the benefit of patients and staff. As the system components are recessed into the underside and accordingly concealed, the classic design of SINUS adds to the patients’ well-being – and thus again to the positive outcome of their recovery.

Freely arrangeable – at last!

19

Power supplyWithin minimum space, SINUS integrates all system components in compliance with applicable standards, from safety sockets (230V/16A) via switches, momentary- action switches and dimmers through to equipotential bonding bolts in the flush-mounted version (according to DIN 42801). All system components, except for the connection point and the oxygen outlet, can be installed and distributed flexibly over the entire length of the supply unit. Even the installation, wiring and testing of the mains power components are effected according to legal requirements.

Duct for accessoriesAccessory parts can be fixed to a furrow in the lower part of the aluminium section of SINUS. Various brackets, mounting tracks and medical trunking can be installed quickly and easily thanks to inno-vative fitting technology. The latter can be used to mount or fix a wide range of acces sories. In this way, the patient room obtains a cosy, comfortable character, at the same time offering more room for the patient’s personal belongings.

Sample comparison Patient room / 2-bed unit

The SINUS medical supply unit is a lighting and supply tool offering a maximum of flexibility in addition to a clear design language, thanks to LED technology. In this way, the lighting adjusts to different states of occupancy by means of a selector switch – for instance, turning an efficiently illu-minated single or 2-bed room into an optimally supplied and illuminat ed 3-bed room if required. Perfect light in patient rooms facilitates nursing and examinations, but also supports recovery. The SINUS supply unit boasts diversity, providing indirect general lighting for an open, stimulating room ambience, individual reading and examination lighting through to night lighting. Facility management is taken into account through excellent effi-ciency. The efficiency of the LED solution at the bedside in combi-nation with LED downlights for room lighting can be optimised even further by means of presence detectors and daylight sensors. Even sockets, switches, emergency call and outlets for medical gases have been implemented within the scope of this system solution.
