Overview of the Mini/Net book Technology
• Utilizing the mini-notebook to streamline the technology for the district
• More flexible to move laptops from room to room than traditional laptops, and certainly desktops
• Expand the use of technology through the access to those applications on the web/servers
• Replace the cost and maintenance of the textbooks by loading the textbook copy onto the mini’s
• Ability to reach more students for less budget dollars.
![Page 5: Mini-Notebooks Everyone can have a Mini-notebook](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062517/56649f2b5503460f94c45bfe/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Technology in this grouping• Mini-Notebooks
• Netbooks
• Handhelds
• Smart phones
• eBooks
Generally the mini-notebook is the most robust and has the most features for unit to interface with peripherals.
The other units are listed by mobility/interface ratio. (Still mobile for the user, less interfaces)

Case Study – Method
![Page 10: Mini-Notebooks Everyone can have a Mini-notebook](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062517/56649f2b5503460f94c45bfe/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Deployment Guidelines
• Selecting the core classrooms provided with mini-laptops for every student, every day– Selection of classrooms from application process
• Emphasis on effective instructional strategies and critical literacy skills (writing, reading, research)
• Continuous support provided– From external consultant and district technology
integration coach • unit/lesson design, effective instruction, and meaningful use
of technology
![Page 11: Mini-Notebooks Everyone can have a Mini-notebook](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062517/56649f2b5503460f94c45bfe/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Mission of Derry Township School District:

![Page 12: Mini-Notebooks Everyone can have a Mini-notebook](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062517/56649f2b5503460f94c45bfe/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Why we need to Teach Technology in School
![Page 13: Mini-Notebooks Everyone can have a Mini-notebook](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062517/56649f2b5503460f94c45bfe/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Common goals• The Classroom will be the start of the
students’ educational experience– But not the only site.– Students will be mobile – learning is
everywhere - if they are prepared• Education must prepare students for careers
that have yet to be invented – Technological fluency is now a basic skill – Compact portable technologies facilitate
anywhere/anytime lifelong learning – Education must focus on new competencies
![Page 14: Mini-Notebooks Everyone can have a Mini-notebook](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062517/56649f2b5503460f94c45bfe/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Goals for the Classroom
“Engage the student - or enrage
the student.”
• Shifts in Professional Development –– Effective instruction based on best practices– Collaboration between educators – Teach the lesson with the technology– Encourage through project-based activities
![Page 15: Mini-Notebooks Everyone can have a Mini-notebook](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062517/56649f2b5503460f94c45bfe/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
The Derry Township SD – Student Goals
• To increase student academic achievement, especially in the areas of critical thinking and literacy (reading/writing)
• To have students use the technology and tools most suited to their learning styles and future needs
• To focus on 21st century teaching & learning
![Page 16: Mini-Notebooks Everyone can have a Mini-notebook](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062517/56649f2b5503460f94c45bfe/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
SPECIFIC OUTCOMES DESIRED
• Improved quality of student writing• Greater depth of student understanding in content
areas• Higher percentage of assignments requiring critical
literacy • Stronger evidence of use of best practices supported
by technology
What does your district want to specify?
Define your outcomes – planning makes it happen

with similar projects
![Page 18: Mini-Notebooks Everyone can have a Mini-notebook](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062517/56649f2b5503460f94c45bfe/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)

SUSTAINING THE EFFORT(Maintenance/Institutionalization Phase)
![Page 20: Mini-Notebooks Everyone can have a Mini-notebook](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062517/56649f2b5503460f94c45bfe/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
EVALUATION PHASE:
• Data To Be Collected and AnalyzedSTUDENT PERFORMANCE DATATEACHER ASSIGNMENTSEXTENT OF USE OF LAPTOPSTYPE OF USE OF LAPTOPSATTITUDINAL/PERCEPTUAL DATA
Measuring Success

How to Deploy
• Infrastructure– Hardware, software, personnel for implementation,
sustaining, and growth
• Support– Board, community, administration, teachers, students
and parents
• Professional Development– Job-embedded, continuous, on-going
• Communication– Systemic perspective (K-12)
![Page 22: Mini-Notebooks Everyone can have a Mini-notebook](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062517/56649f2b5503460f94c45bfe/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
Refresh and Sustain
It's tough to make predictions, especially about the future” (Yogi Berra) but . . .
• Schools that ignore the trends shaping tomorrow will cease to be relevant in the lives of their students, and will quickly disappear. We must transform all formal institutions of learning, from pre-K through college, to insure that we are preparing students for their future, not for our past. David Thornburg
![Page 23: Mini-Notebooks Everyone can have a Mini-notebook](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062517/56649f2b5503460f94c45bfe/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
Project to Program phase
• Commitment to implement and grow– Increase capacity (expand to more
teachers/students) • Planned deployment makes this phase – how are the
students going to using the technology next year? and how many?
– Continuous professional development (technology-integration coaches)
• Lead Teachers and mentors can help with this process• Futures phases can involve students and their work
with the deployment can be part of a course assignment.

Closing Thoughts….
• "If the rate of change inside an institution is less than the rate of change outside, the end is in sight." Jack Welch
