Mindful Chair Yoga
Yoga is an excellent way for adults to loosen and stretch painful muscles, reduce stress, and improve circulation. It also reduces anxiety, helps lower blood pressure, protects joints, and builds strength and balance. Chair yoga can lessen the impact of chronic illnesses and pain. Attend this presentation to learn some fantastic chair yoga poses and exercises that can be easily completed at home or in a group setting.
Everyone is welcomed to join this lesson presented

Joy of Giving
Monday, December 9, 2019, is the date to save for the 2019 Joy of
Giving community outreach program sponsored by the Fayette
Extension Homemakers Association. Joy of Giving is a community
outreach program that targets seniors in local nursing care centers. Each
holiday season nursing home residents are invited to join homemaker
club members to share holiday food and fellowship. Gifts are provided
for residents to select and share with loved ones and friends as well as
for personal use. This historic program is unique in its goal to provide
community volunteer service to seniors with minimum family support,
especially during the holiday season. The following list of items have
been approved for donation. The need is great and associate members as
well as the general public are encouraged to bring donations to the
Fayette County Extension Office on or before December 5. All
donations will be distributed by a Fayette Extension Homemaker Club at
a participating nursing care center. Thank you in advance for your
contribution.

Turkey Tips
For many of us, Thanksgiving dinner is the largest meal we prepare all year. So much time and effort
goes into planning the meal. There’s the decorations, the place settings, the side dishes, the guest list
and oh yeah, the turkey! Follow these food safety tips to ensure a safe and delicious turkey at your
Thanksgiving dinner.
If you’re planning on cooking a fresh turkey, purchase it no more than two days before Thanksgiving. I would
recommend calling ahead to make sure your grocer will have fresh birds at that time.
Frozen turkeys can be purchased several weeks before. Just make sure you allow enough time for thawing. Thawing
should never be done at room temperature on the counter. Thawing should be done in the refrigerator, in the sink using
cold water that is changed every 30 minutes or in the microwave if followed by immediate cooking. Contact your local
Extension office for detailed information on thawing your turkey.
Before you start the cooking preparations, wash your hands with soap and warm water for 20 seconds.
Don’t wash the turkey. This can spread bacteria onto kitchen surfaces. All raw meat contains bacteria. Washing the meat
will not remove the bacteria. The only way to remove the bacteria is to properly cook the turkey.
Keep the turkey away from all other foods before cooking in order to avoid cross contamination. Don’t prepare any
other foods until you have the turkey in the oven and have properly cleaned and sanitized the area.
If possible use a different cutting board and knife when preparing the turkey. Wash and sanitize everything that touched
the raw meat, even countertops.
Cook the turkey until it reaches 165 degrees F, measured with a metal stem thermometer. The temperature should be
checked in three places; the thickest part of the breast, the innermost part of the wing, and the innermost part of the
thigh.
It is always safer to cook the stuffing separately. However, if you choose to stuff your bird, use a metal stem
thermometer to check the temperature of the stuffing too. The center of the stuffing should reach at least 165 degrees F.
Refrigerate leftovers within two hours.
Do not store stuffing inside the turkey. Remove the stuffing from the bird and refrigerate it in a separate container.
Remove the meat from the turkey before storing in the refrigerator. Legs and wings can be left whole. Remember to eat
those leftovers within 3-4 days. If the meat will not be eaten within 4 days, freeze the meat for up to 4 months for best
quality.

President’s News
Greetings to all!
I hope everyone has adjusted to the new time and temperatures! I think it is really Fall Y'All! Please be safe as the beautiful leaves fall, but can lead to slippery falls when wet. Sometimes the change in the time and seasons affects our bodies and causes us a little slump in or moods--but that is the time to pull out this newsletter and see what classes and special activities are being offered at the Extension Office! You will snap out of that slump into a cheery festive mood!
Let me first say a big THANK YOU to all that helped in any way to put together a FANTASTIC AREA MEETING on last Friday! Words cannot adequately describe all the hard work, meetings, sweat and tears that went into making it a GRAND affair. Many are still talking about it. Thanks to our planning committee, all clubs, entertainment, and of course our Agent Diana for making it all a success. We can take a break until our turn to host in the next nine years!
A reminder to all about our Quilts of Valor program and Military Missions project coming up in November. A great program and brunch has been planned. We want to support our veterans and all men and women currently serving in the military. Please see the list of items needed for the next mailing and thanks to those that donate year round.
The Holidays are fast approaching, so please don't forget to support the "Joy of Giving" in December.
We thank our clubs and the community that donate so generously to this needed project. Our nursing homes really appreciate the extra way in which we share! Thanks in advance for your "JOY"
Finally, don't forget to get all dues in and membership data. Please take advantage of inviting new members or sharing with the Mail box memberships as gifts to friends and family. Let's work to get our numbers up!
A last reminder that the next Homemaker Board meeting will be held on Tuesday, December 3rd at 6 pm --please bring an item for the Family Care Center for an added holiday cheer box to the young mothers and their children--you will be blessed!
Blessings to all for a safe and loving Thanksgiving!
