Background/ life● Struth was born in 1954 in Geldern, North Rhine-Westphalia, West Germany. His mother, Gisela Struth was a
ceramic potter, where his father, Heinrich Struth, was a bank director.
● He initially studied at Staatliche Kunstakademie Düsseldorf under German painter, Gerhard Richter. Struth originally focused on becoming a painter, rather than a photographer. Bernd and Hilla Becher were the founders of the school Struth attended.
● Struth’s paintings “used a straightforward, central perspective. The airless, static images bore a striking similarity to the “typologies” of industrial structures that the Bechers were creating. In a 1976 exhibition of student work, Struth displayed his work in a grid, as the Bechers had been doing since the 1960s, even though he was still studying with Richter and had not yet seen the Bechers’ work.” Richter encouraged Struth to take up the Bechers photography class where he met future influences such as Candida Hofer, and Andreas Gursky.
