Now that we have your attention… I am very excited about the new endeavor that the Orpheum and its parent organization, The Memphis Development Foundation, are undertaking: the creation of a new three story Education and Leadership Center. Last year, 63,430 young people from first grade through college took part in the Orpheum’s 19 education and leadership programs, an increase in attendance of over 10,000 from 2010. Sadly, we had to turn kids away for lack of space. It became apparent with this growth rate and the diminishing time and space available in the Theatre— something had to be done. The answer is obvious: we need to create a space for this important commitment to the community. The Board of Directors has decided to create a state of the art facility that will help prepare future generations for the challenges of life, to seize the opportunites that will make them excellent, motivated citizens and that are positive about their city. Total participation by 2017 will exceed 100,000 young people benefiting from instruction in the performing arts, marketing, communication, leadership, and citizenship, while learning decision-making skills that will open doors for a successful future. We hope that in the weeks and months ahead as more information is made available that many of you will want to be involved and support this endeavor. If you are anxious to be a part of this project – call me or talk to one of our Board members or staff. And oh— by the way, the new center will not look anything like the building above, which is the new award-winning Cleveland Clinic’s Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health located in Las Vegas, Nevada.

MEMPHIS HEROESWhen you think of The Peabody Hotel, you think of the Ducks. When you think about the revitalization of Downtown Memphis, you think of Jack Belz. As one of Memphis’ most extraordinary visionaries, Jack has always had a special focus on historic preservation. His commitment to save the world-famous Peabody Hotel resulted in the first-class attraction, cultural landmark, and architectural jewel we know today. But this was only the beginning of Belz’ vision. In the early 1980s Belz sought to breathe new life into Downtown Memphis. At the heart of his efforts was the eight-block redevelopment known as Peabody Place, a mixed-use facility where people could live, work, and entertain. This accomplishment includes the Gayoso House apartments, Pembroke Square, 50 Peabody Place, the Tower at Peabody Place, and the AutoZone headquarters. Belz Enterprises is one of the South’s largest commercial and industrial real estate companies. Jack Belz has been intimately involved in the development and operations hundreds of projects throughout the country ranging from shopping centers, hotels, industrial parks, corporate office parks, factory outlet malls, apartment buildings, and residential neighborhoods. Generosity abounding, Jack has given much to Memphis in other ways. The Belz family has long been major contributors to charitable events and non-profit organizations throughout the Mid South. In1999, Jack and his wife Marilyn opened up their exquisite Chinese art collection to the Memphis community, keeping it on permanent display at the Belz Museum of Asian and Judaic Art. Jack Belz is one of our most distinguished and accomplished Memphis Heroes. Without Jack Belz’s vision, Memphis’ downtown renaissance might never have happened. For that, Memphis is forever grateful for Jack, the Belz family, and their belief in a better Memphis.

Additional Arrangements by LEVI KREIS

A Tuesday night shortly before Christmas 1956. Four legends — Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley — gathered at the Sun Records studio in Memphis, Tennessee, where they’d launched their careers. Word soon leaked out of an impromptu jam session. A newspaper man who was there wrote, “This quartet could sell a million.” Soon, they were dubbed the Million Dollar Quartet. This was their only performance, a cultural flashpoint that caught rock ‘n’ roll at the moment of creation. Sun Records owner Sam Phillips discovered and produced the Million Dollar Quartet. That’s why he, together with Presley and Lewis, were among the Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of Fame’s charter inductees. Perkins and Cash soon joined them. Unlike other produc-ers at that time, Phillips took an active role in recording, encouraging and coaxing his young, untested artists to reach deep within themselves. He began by recording blues singers like B.B. King and Ike Turner. Later on, he was the first to sign Roy Orbison and Charlie Rich. In his rudimentary, one-room studio, Phillips looked for innovation, not imitation. The music he recorded transformed the cultural landscape of the twentieth century, and its reverberations are still felt today.

The use of any recording device, either audio or video, and the taking of photographs, either with or without flash, is strictly prohibited. Please turn off all electronic devices such as cellular phones, beepers and watches.
