6.3 Opportunities

6.3.1 Multitude of Legacy Platforms to Upgrade One of the key strengths of the military land vehicle electronics market is the applicability of its

systems as upgrades to existing vehicle platforms. At a time when the world’s largest defence

markets are under extreme budgetary pressure, upgrades are often far more appealing than the

expectation of new platform procurement. The vetronics market has made good use of this

strength in the past, and it can be expected to continue to do so in the future.

6.3.2 Wide Array of Electronic Systems The vetronics market also exhibits a large degree of variety in the systems which make it up,

leading to a more stable market than would otherwise be the case. The division of vetronics

spending amongst the 5 submarkets that Visiongain has identified is quite equally spread, with

each, aside from vehicle protection systems, accounting for around 20% of the market. Combined

with the variety amongst purchasers, the sheer range of different vehicle electronic systems will

help the market remain robust.

6.3.3 Introduction of More COTS Systems The introduction of a more COTS focused procurement model has been discussed above as a

possible weakness for some companies, but for the market as a whole, it has the possibility to

become a great opportunity. Legacy vetronics systems were bespoke and custom engineered.

This made them expensive and hard to upgrade. With the increasing emphasis on the adaptation

of business and consumer form factors and into new, universally applied vetronics standards, the

cost of components, as well of upgrades, should diminish. Easier interfacing between individual

vetronics systems should mean that platform operators face fewer daunting costs and delays if

they choose to upgrade vetronics in the future, ensuring more fluidity and growth in the market.

6.3.4 New Markets in the Rest of the World Similarly to many relatively young defence markets, the vehicle electronics market is offered a

great opportunity by fast-growing emerging defence markets. The vetronics market in particular is

expected to witness fast growth in the ‘Rest of the World’ market, which Visiongain predicts will

increase its share of global spending from 8.9% in 2014 to 15.2% in 2024. In many cases these

emerging markets will not possess the legacy capabilities in vetronics that some of the leading

national markets currently do, and so are given an even higher incentive to adopt them.
