Military Briefing 4 Airport Security STANAG 2

I have been invited to give you a briefing on the security at this international airport. As you all

know, this is the worlds biggest and busiest international airport and we deal with over240,000 people a day in each of the 4 terminals. ach terminal has over !000 flights per daywith 2"0 different destinations.

As you can imagine, we handle hundreds of thousands of pieces of luggage. #e must checkeach piece of luggage separately to make sure that passengers have not placed bombs ordangerous materials in their cases. #e also check luggage for illegal items, such as drugsand often use special electronic e$uipment to detect them. %he most effective e$uipment wehave for finding drugs, however, are our specially trained &sniffer' dogs. %hese dogsconstantly walk up and down the luggage conveyor belt and carousels, sniffing luggage for allkinds of illegal substances.

%he area we use for luggage handling is appro(imately the si)e of 4 football fields.

Another ma*or problem is, of course, air traffic control. +eparation, or distance betweenaircraft on takeoff or landing is about 4 kilometres, or -0 seconds, so there isnt much time forcontrollers or pilots to react if there is a problem.

%his brings me to the main reason for this briefing. As yet, there has been no press release, but yesterday, security staff were attacked in the luggage processing area of the airport atappro(imately 0!0 hours. %his was a surprise attack, but airport antterrorist police actedswiftly and returned fire on the people whom we now know to be terrorists from the /eoplesational 1iberation Army, or /1A. %he gunbattle lasted for about 2- minutes and thesurviving attackers surrendered to airport police. %wo of the 4 attackers were killed severalemployees in*ured. %he main problem was that the terrorists had been employed as securityguards 2 months ago. %heir backgrounds were not properly investigated, so we have now

decided to renew our employee backgroundcheck system completely. %his will mean theintroduction of a very rigorous vetting procedure during the ne(t 2 weeks and will include allairport personnel. est assured, the situation is totally under control.
